Roberts continues push for special ed funding

robertsmugGood for Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., for renewing his push to get the federal government to honor its commitment to fully fund special education. Roberts and Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, reintroduced a bill to increase federal funding over six years until the federal government fully funds special education, as it promised to do when it approved the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act in 1975. This year, thanks to an infusion of one-time stimulus money, federal funding will pay for 34 percent of special ed costs. “Congress made a promise to our schools and our children to share the cost of special education,” Roberts said in a statement. “It’s time that Congress relieve our state and local governments of the financial burden they have been forced to shoulder, especially in these tough economic times.”

    It would be too easy and to cheap a joke to say something like, “Roberts is pandering to the Repubic Party’s base.”

    Really? Feeling guilty over what your party has done to strip the elderly and disabled now are you Roberts? I want to know what disability group had enough influence to admonish him enough to make a public statement on this. That’s a group I want to be a part of.

    Or maybe it was that pesky teacher’s union.

    Living testament to the need for people who subscribe to knee jerk politics to PAY ATTENTION. Roberts has actually pretty decent on disability issues (not as strong as Dole was, but decent), including special education. Trying to use this to snark about the Republican Party is misguided, to put it kindly. This is the sort of thing I have been talking about. I disagree strongly with Pat Roberts on a lot of issues, he is pretty reliably conservative on issues where I think the self described conservatives are misguided. That being said, he has demonstrated over the years an ability to take issues one at a time, and even appears to take the time to understand those who disagree with him. All of which makes him considerably different from Sam Brownback, even though their voting records are similar.
