Nice work if you can get it

hemenwayFormer University of Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway will earn $340,352 per year during the next two academic years, the Lawrence Journal-World reported. Hemenway, who will teach one course each semester, also will receive reimbursement for moving costs, a graduate research assistant to support his book project, and four season tickets to KU athletic events. Most of his salary would be paid by the KU Endowment Association, rather than with public funds. Lynn Bretz, a KU spokeswoman, said that Hemenway, who ably led KU from 1995 until last June, has “earned every penny” of the compensation package.

Sounds like pretty high pay for a substitute teacher, even at K.U.

    He’s not the only one:

    Wefald to get $255K salary
Compensation part of retirement package, according to memo

Jon Wefald, former Kansas State University president, will receive the same amount in compensation and fringe benefits from public sources as he did the last year he was president, according to a Kansas Board of Regents memo.

I’m not sure if it’s right, but it’s not an atypical post-retirement package in business as in academia.

And while I have no illusions Hemenway is gonna stay up late to grade pop quizzes he gives in his classes, it’s a nice touch he’s interested enough to go back to teaching in his dotage.

If the Endowment Association wants to reward him for a job well done, what’s the problem?

But (and this not just because I’m a Jayhawk) what’s Wefald done or doing that deserves that kinda dough? During his tenure Ron Prince got an extra $3.2 million dollars for not coming back to work, Wefald presided over the Frank Martin/Michael Beasley farce, and the journalism department lost its accreditation as a legitimate school.

    “Yes”

Wow, MH, that’s the most content filled post I can remember from you.

Good thing is, I’m sure Endowment Assoc poured over all qualified prof’s CVs to make sure they didn’t pass over any eligible minority folks who could share diversity, since they selected an elderly white male, 3 of the Dems favorite whipping posts. At least he’s writing a book, hopefully about English..they’re selling like hotcakes these days.

Even if this guy works 15 hours per week, for 2 18-week semesters, that’s 32 weeks x 15 hours or 480 hours per year – well that’s only $709.06 per hour. (Not counting other benefit costs?)

I’m sure he’s worth every penny of it, and parents and students should just quit btiching about high tuition.

    And taxpayers, pony up!

So Hemenway is getting paid to write a book.

I wonder if he’ll share his book profits with KU?

“JimJohnson” cries from out of the wilderness –

“I wonder if he’ll share his book profits with KU?”

I guess you don’t know anything about the process of academic publishing.

“Better to be thought a fool…,” and all that, “JimJohnson.”

But you went and proved it.

Oh no Monkey, $709 an hour plus staff and moving expenses is not enough money for this great teacher.

He needs 100% of the profits from his book that he is writing while his KU staff supports his efforts.
