Though some cads can be somewhat lovable or redeemable, “John Edwards is not,” columnist Eugene Robinson wrote. “His caddishness, it appears, has no redeeming social or political value. He’s just a bad cad.” Robinson noted claims by a former close aide that not only is Edwards the father of his mistress’ 19-month-old daughter, Edwards allegedly promised the mistress that he would marry her after his wife, Elizabeth, had died of cancer, and that they had started to plan the wedding. “The forgivable kind of cad could never do such a thing,” Robinson wrote. “Only the worst kind would.”

A Newt Gringrinch kind of cad, a Rudy Giuliani kind of cad? All despicable. We could also discuss McCain’s treatment of his first wife. I’ll be the first to mention Bill Clinton as a cad. I’ll bet if we put our heads together we could come up with a host of unfaithful, deplorable ‘cads.’
Your point being? Everyday this blog is filled with the mouthings by some about Republicans who have not met the test of faithfulness to their wives. Now Edwards is brought up, it’s still about Republicans? Oh, okay Linda. Let’s go ahead and discuss scandals by Republicans AND Democrats, and try to decide which is dirtier. Me, as I said during the whole Monica Lewisky deal… A man or woman whose spouse can;t count on being faithful, isn;t worth a flying f#$#ck and shouldn;t hold public offic. I don;t care which party they belong to.
“A Newt Gringrinch kind of cad, a Rudy Giuliani kind of cad?”
Funny, I thought the topic was John Edwards.
Guess Linda does not want to talk about John.
He could only be a worse cad if he was to go on national tv and profess his enduring love for his new found soul mate!
Then go home to his wife.
Hey, I was an early Edwards supporter.
And I fully admit I was betrayed and got him wrong.
It doesn’t make make feel any better about it that David Vitter is still in the Senate after he paid a call-girl to spank him as he was swaddled in a diaper. I get no satisfaction John Ensign is still a Repubic Party stalwart in the Senate after he boinked his best friend’s wife (and employee) and got his parents to send her a hundred grand for her silence. It’s not comforting to envision Newtie Gingrich serving divorce papers to his first wife on her cancer bed. (I mean, hell. She’d been his high school math teacher! Newtie’s got issues.)
Doesn’t matter.
I expected more from John Edwards. But it’s not about boinking the help. And Elizabeth Edwards is not without blame since she knew the truth behind their teddy-bear-and-rainbows marriage the campaign portrayed.
I guess the upside for the Edwards affair is it ruined his political prospects, but like MH pointed out poetic justice isn’t always served, esp. if you’re a family values rep. for the party or have a C-street membership.
” Edwards allegedly promised the mistress that he would marry her after his wife, Elizabeth, had died of cancer, and that they had started to plan the wedding”
Must have learned that from Newt.
Interesting…
I bet lindainks brings up every bad deed her husband has ever done in his life with each argument they have. lindainks seems to be the type to do so.
If you will notice lindainks entry, not one mention of Edwards – not one.
Personally, I could care less about Edwards, except for the fact he screwed around on his wife who has cancer. I find that detestable and am sure there will be a special place in h3ll for his type of adultry.

Not any more, that good little Stepford wife moved out and took the kids with her.
But she still won’t say anything negative about her cheating cad in public.
Yeah, that’s a good role model for young girls.
The difference between Democrat and Republican cads is that Republicans high-five their cads and promote them on the political vine and the DCemocrats just let theirs to rot on the political vine.
Case in point – Sanford is STILL in office, John Ensign is STILL in office, Newt Gringrich is STILL one of the golden boy GOP leaders, Rush Limbaugh (who has had several attempts at this) is THE BOSS of the GOP.
What has John Edwards done in the Democrat Party – not one darn thing – he has been left to hang out to dry.
Regular – there will be a special place in H3ll for alot of people who have been doing deplorable things like killing people in a war for profit. But the special part comes into play when these same people use God’s name as justification.
No doubt toto,
Heaven for climate;H3LL for company.

Ick!
Just…ick!
And, if true, way beyond simply being a cad.
Oh, he’s a Democrat? Wouldn’t have known from the blog post. If he were a Republican it would have been in the headline.
I wish they’d go over Jenkin’s affair with as much scrutiny. These powerful people all think they can get away with this stuff. I’m sorry but I don’t see Edwards being the kind of guy to say ‘oh we wait till the wife dies, I play grieving husband, and then we get married’.
I don’t know how he expected to play it all out, but I don’t see that being the way it went down. I’ll bet it was portrayed in the harshest terms possible.
You also have to question what the woman was thinking it would be any different for her than it was his wife. Denial?
I should say Jenkins alleged affair.
Reading the comments on this blog, it would be easy to see a Liberal and a Conservative having a three-some with a under aged girl. And all the time there would be a argument going on over her back as to which one is the child molester!
Edwards has no heart or soul, enough said.

WTF!
You are more mentally unstable than I thought.
I am so glad you finally started thinking Regular!
But to draw a picture, it is silly to be comparing which sides has the greater sins when they both are engaged in the same actions.
the difference is that libs admit that what happened was bad and wrong. Cons just deny it all.
Sorry. . no, not sorry. At all. Gotta say it.
John Edwards ran a decent and honorable campaign, with a decent and honorable message. And it took considerable nerve (and I think a huge degree of stupid denial) for him to continue to run for president on that–or any–message, with that kind of skeleton in his closet.
I honor what he did during the campaign, but obviously have to question his credibility in all of it.
It seems us political people have been conditioned into binary thinking. That’s especially true when the subject of moderate-middle comes up–it’s supposedly the middle ground between two prominent positions.
What a load of crap. John Edwards was right about the “two Americas” thing. He was on-message before Obama was, but people didn’t want to hear that before the total meltdown. Everyone wants hope.
So, in his personal life, he’s got some issues. The other woman has reported some really ugly statements, and she might be right. Or bitter. Or both.
Thinking people who can google will get this: while Edwards’ contribution to human society may be small, how far do we extend this pariah principle? Shall we disavow everything William Shockley or Stanley Milgram ever did? Shall we throw out James Watson’s work, looking at his past unjust slights of Rosalind Franklin, or his more recent racially questionable comments?
I’m not defending anything Edwards did. I am just wondering if any who believed in the message can so easily retreat from it, regardless of the messenger.
I’m hoping the answer is no.
