Novak left a mark

novakThe death of 78-year-old columnist Robert Novak seems like the end of an era of political reporting and conservative commentary. Some may know him only as the guy who identified Valerie Plame as a CIA agent (and got away with it). But his insider status and corrosive way with words made him a force in national politics and policymaking, as well as the rise of cable news. The editorial board at his home newspaper, the Chicago Sun-Times, recalled this Novak nugget: “Always love your country — but never trust your government!”

“Always love your country — but never trust your government!”

A wise sentiment, in any country, with any government. It simply recognizes the nature of the Leviathan.

Express your love of country by outing a CIA agent should be his saying.

Who, exactly, is mean and nasty? Pot, meet kettle.

I’ve said it before: get help, JR. The endless hate is eating you up. Even your ideological allies recognize debilitating hate when they see it. Most important, you have a child who will become what he sees – and if your real life is like your online life, it’s driven by who you hate. That’s sad, most of all for that son.

I truly feel sorry for you. Living with all that hate must make you miserable no matter how much you deny it. I know it made me miserable. Thinking everyone is against you and worrying about things you have no control of is not living.

    GMC70,
It used to make me mad when I would read the type of things BlueJay and Monkey would say as you point out above, full of hate and bitterness. But not anymore.
I am almost tickled to see it because I know that hate and bitterness is their own just reward and will eat them from the inside out. Just what they deserve, that and the swine hole they live in.

I am sorry for anyone who dies of such a horrible disease as brain cancer.

That being said, the nasty, partisan cr*p in this thread is a fitting tribute to Robert Novak, who used to smile whenever someone accused him of going too far with what he said (which happened with great regularity), even when he was on a panel with a minimum of three other right wingers on the McGlaughlin Group. Now, professional nastytrolls like Ann Coulter make Novak appear mild in comparison.

There are some culture warriors and partisan hacks who seemed to genuinely like hard hitting discussion. Novak was one of them. Unlike people like Buchanan, Tucker Carlson, and yes, G. Gordon Liddy, however, I suspect he really didn’t like the people sitting across from him in such a discussion (Crossfire was never worth a damn once Michael Kingsley’s Parkinson’s got the better of him, and Buchanan decided to amuse himself by tilting at presidential windmills).

Not even remotely close. Rachel Maddow is a thoughtful commentator. Definite liberal bias, but no flaming troll like Ann Coulter. The conservative equivalent to a Rachel Maddow would be someone worth listening to even if you don’t agree with him/her…the late William F. Buckley comes to mind. Maybe also George Will (yes, Rachel Maddow is that smart).

A more appropriate liberal comparison to Ann Coulter would be the comic Kathy Griffin (have you ever heard her rants on politics?) or Rosie O’Donnell (and even O’Donnel I don’t consider as nasty as Coulter, and I do not think of O’Donnell as a nice person by any means). There are probably some other prattling trolls on Air America who would qualify as well, and I tolerate “liberal talk radio” every bit as well as right wing Clear Channel nonsense (that is, I don’t tolerate it at all-well, except for Stephanie Miller, she really is funny).

But Rachel Maddow? Absolutely not. Even Keith Olberman is far more of a troll than Rachel Maddow, and he doesn’t come close to Ann Coulter either.

Coulter has nothing redeemable to say whatsoever.

    Agnatha,
What is he11 is all that gibberish at 4:13 pm about….I mean who cares what your opinions of those people are. Do you actually think most even bother to read it let alone care?

Oh and comatose, thinking that not knowing the nickname of Novak, who I rarely read or listen to, is a BIG faux pas…..well, yeah right comatose.
I would bet next month pay you didn’t either but simply, as I said earlier, are looking for something to try and make yourself look pertinent, relevant to anything…..nitwit, it won’t work, you aren’t.

to give Novak credit, he and Pat Buchanan were two of the notable Conservatives that said at the beginning that the build up to the invasion of Iraq. Was not based on facts or reality i.e that the Bush administration was not truthful.

    Not to Boxlock,
Michael Jackson wasn’t REALLY the King of Pop, it was just a title he relished like Novak and Prince of Darkness. And the Pop doesn’t refer to a soda!

    boxlock20,

Okay, so you criticized the Eagle’s use of a well-known and friendly nickname of a late journalist, who you “rarely read or listen to”.

Well Boxy, they sure don’t care what you babble on about. At least Agnatha makes sense.

Novak brought a freshness to the art of reporting. He didn’t back down from the truth even when it was not complimentary to the conservatives. I for one will miss the openness with which he reported.

As for this thread and the libs comments – I hope they save a few of them. Uncle Teddy doesn’t appear to be long for this world. He is suffering from the same type of brain tumor.

Will we have all of the libs talking about the murder of a young woman at the hands of Teddy?

    YellowdogLiberal,
How’d ya get to be a ‘yellowdog’ there liberal, can’t keep from p@@ing on yourself like other liberals.

comatose, apparently the criticism of using the nickname without explanation in the contest of his death was enough to get the title changed.
By the way, no one pays attention to little whiners like you comatose, and in-spite of your infatuation with me go away, you are nothing more than an annoying insect.

Yes boxlock20. . . it seems that the Eagle did not want to confuse, and/or upset people like you, who paid their respect to the late journalist by not knowing his long-time nickname used by his friends.

People like boxlock20, who “rarely read or listen to” the late Mr. Novak.

And who didn’t want to bother reading any of the many other news columns today, that explained his ‘Prince of Darkness’ nic.

    Well, Bob’s dead. That’s a good thing.

And his death helped us learn something today.

Cons are emotionally reactionary and tend to post without really knowing what they are talking about.

Rhonda caves under the slightest pressure from the same reactionary idiots.

And yes they did Regular, proving they too thought without an explanation calling him the ‘Prince of Darkness’ at the time of his DEATH was over the top.

Yes, it seems it was easier for them to change the title than try to explain a well-known fact to a couple of posters who had a little hissy fit.
