A few days after one developer dropped out, the two others vying to build a Sumner County casino spared state officials from having to choose between Mulvane and Wellington, coming together on the Chisholm Creek Casino Resort at the Mulvane exit of the Kansas Turnpike. Lakes Entertainment joined Foxwoods Development in the Mulvane proposal, effectively ending Wellington’s long-held dream of being home to the casino and its economic development. That’s tough. But all of Sumner County will see revenues, jobs and other benefits from the casino (as well as some negatives, it should be said), and the casino’s best chances of success have always seemed to be in Mulvane. Of course, after 2½ years of big announcements followed by scrapped plans, many will believe in a Sumner County casino resort only when they see it.

Wonder how many people will drop their Wichita Eagle subscription so they can gamble those last budgeted dollars?
Once again, casinos do not bring dollars into a community, they TAKE IT OUT in large canvas money bags on the next speeding overnight train out of our city.
“JWink” –
It’s a good deal for Sumner County, though.
All that Wichita money traveling south to a backwater casino for a night at the slots, microwaved slabs of prime rib and C-List used-to-be’s in concert:
“Appearing tonight!
DAWN!”
(No Tony Orlando; just Dawn.)
I’m at a disadvantage when it comes to discussing casinos. I have my share of vices but gambling has never been one of ‘em.
I’m not much of a gambler myself, but I see no reason why gaming shouldn’t be available. Once a casino is open, I’ll probably at least check it out, since Mulvane is just down the road. Too bad Wichita didn’t have the foresight to take advantage of thei opportunity. The way it is now, Wichita will still have to deal with the problems inherent with a casino, and they’ll see none of the benefits.
I agree XXX,
It is a missed opportunity for Wichita.
Personally I can only tolerate being in a casino for 5-10 minutes.
I can find better ways of throwing my money away.
XXX – not true. Part of the deal is that Sedgwick County gets 1% of the revenues. Wichita is in Sedgwick County.
“ANTI” declares –
“I can find better ways of throwing my money away.”
Sure you can!
Just pay “American_Way” to explore your “honey hole.”
I don’t mind a casino. The only games I play in a casino, is Poker, and occasionally black jack. Those are really the only games you can win at. Well Poker is the only game you can consistently win at, black jack is just a coin flip every hand unless your a card counter.
Will be nice, to play in some poker tournaments, once it’s built.
The casino is sort of like O’BAMA’s health care proposal, many must lose in order for a few to win.

Good morning, Ben.
Sedgwick county and Wichita certainly missed a chance to fill its coffers by rejecting the Casino, and closing down the Dog Track
Tom – I agree. It’s too bad the casino supporters botched their campaign so badly. And it is doubly bad that a number of them voted NO on the track because they didn’t want competition for their casino they were so certain would pass. And, just to add insult to injury, Ruffin waited until too late to try to seperate the issues.
Sedgwick County gets 1 percent of the revenue, unforgivable. Property taxes would have benefited and revenue spent here is better than in Sumner County.
Whiny No voters back then equal to federal health care babblers today suffering false beliefs.
I prefer $225 Million in development money be spent here in Sedgwick County, how NO voters turn that down I will never understand why.
Mistrust with the gambling corporations is a given. How Phil Ruffin wouldn’t deal with a cleaner process, partially state owned casino’s hurt the cause. He still should be involved, but isn’t. I don’t trust that guy.
His dog tracks slots crap is all the gambling he wants here is laughable.
Sumner County wins, when the process finding the right spot in Sedgwick County could have happened.
It wasn’t supposed to be a NO vote on a Casino downtown. The best plan process would have picked the right location. Downtown could have been rejected in the process. Somewhere in Sedgwick County it should have happened.
Corporations threatening to move from downtown was abusive to public voting process. Those CEO’s threatened major changes to their employees wasn’t right.
The City Commission failed this community among other things, not championing the Casino vote here, actually making worse comments about the gambling plans downtown.
People listened to Dee Stuart negative comments, former Park City Mayor, unbelievable back then!
It’s why Kelly Parks, Gwen Welshiemer and now Karl Peterjohn sit on the County Commission, it’s wrong headed voting by people in Sedgwick County!
please click on my name above and go to my website. There you will find my other blog page named, “Governor Candidate Issues”. It explains the stupidity and the mismanagment of our tax dollars by the Kansas Lottery and the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission. They spend an average of $233 million a year, to make $7 million, a year, average. They spend that maoney like it is somebody elses. It is. It is our tax money!!! How much will they spend to run a Casino to make chump change? 55% of the current Lottery budget pays State Employyee wages. The get 55% of $233 million to make the State $7 million in return. That bites!!!!!!! Please read my article, it is an eye opener!!! Herbert West III, Uncontested Democratic Candidate for Kasnas Governor, 2010. www dot herbertwest3rd dot blogspot dot com , twitter dot com/HerbertIII
for the life of me, I do not understand the vehemence with the NO voters. The red herrings of “increase crime” and destitution etc., have not been borne out in other communities.
Like so many other things in life…if you don’t like something, don’t go there. Simple. Whether this is a major loss for Sedgwick county has yet to be seen. Nationwide, people are learning that casinos are not the magic pot of gold that people seem to think. Casinos provide neither vast wealth for communities, or unspeakable problems.
Yes..some people get addicted to gambling….they can do that without a casino.
Sit back you all and watch what is coming SG Countys way over the next few months. My prediction is SEDGWICK COUNTY will now have their casino. Yes you all will get your 2% and Sumner County will enjoy their 1%. Or else when it is opened it gets repealed and only the Dodge City Casino will be grandfathered in.
Mrage! If you are on facebook, would like to add you as a friend.
I missed “HerbertWestIII’s” post earlier.
Just to be clear, I am not now (nor have I ever been) a candidate for the office of Governor of the great State of Kansas.
