“The country is fighting two very difficult wars. It needs a secretary of the Army, and President Obama has chosen Rep. John McHugh, a Republican, for the job. Yet Sens. Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts have selfishly put a hold on his nomination along with nine other appointments to the Pentagon and the Justice Department,” a New York Times editorial argued. It noted that the senators are trying to prevent the White House from moving Guantanamo detainees to Fort Leavenworth and accused them of stoking “hometown anxieties with the ludicrous argument that detainees present extraordinary dangers beyond the 1.2 million convicted felons in prisons across America.” The editorial concluded: “If there is any common sense in the Senate (the self-proclaimed greatest deliberative body), the honorable members from Kansas should be forced to yield to the Army’s and the nation’s overriding need. They have already gotten their parochial headlines.”

Agreed. Brownback and Roberts should end their opposition to appointment of a Secretary of the Army … pronto.
#2 … I suspect a majority of Kansans and Leavenworth citizens would favor bringing the Gitmo detainees to Kansas IF the detainees can’t be kept at the Gruantanomo Bay Naval facility on the eastern tip of Cuba.
If it takes other states in shaming our representatives, so be it. People of Kansas need to hold these yahoos accountable for their acts. Republicans police your own.
Let’s see — Obama has been in office since January 20, and it’s now August 18. If the appointment of the Secretary of the Army was of such critical importance, then why was it not accomplished long before Senators Roberts and Brownback took their procedural steps designed to keep the detainees out of Fort Leavenworth? The President could have skipped a couple of the apology tours.
And why exactly do we want to move these people out of Guantanamo?
More importantly; why would we want them in our Federal prison system?
Senators Roberts and Brownback are doing EXACTLY what their constituents have ask of them on this subject, not a vocal minority that complains about everything.
Guantanamo is the perfect place for them and it’s already set up for exactly what it’s doing.
“Heckler” comes up with –
“And why exactly do we want to move these people out of Guantanamo?
More importantly; why would we want them in our Federal prison system?”
And why can’t they eat pork & beans like normal prisoners?!
And why should prisoners be given a compass so they know which way to bow and pray to Mecca?
For that matter, what are we doing spending taxpayers’ money to promote a religious cult that worships a guy whose whole mission on earth was “Don’t Get Hung Up over Easter?” And his followers have spent 2000 years hung up over Easter!
One of my favorite memories of my days, back in the day, when my ex- taught at Wichita North High School and the word got round how the Bishop instructed the Kapaun-Mt. Carmel basketball coach to not let any player with a lower than 80% average to cross himself before a free throw.
1. Congress schedules confirmation hearing dates. The President onlt nominates the individuals. 2. If Brownback and Roberts, are only doing what their constituents want, why did they have to do so many “Scare Tactic” meetings? 3. If they are Muslim, or 7th Day Adventice or Jewish they do’t eat pork by religious beliefs. 4. These detainees are required to be charged per the Geneva Convention. They are considered Foriegn Prisoners of War. 5. They cannot see Mecca or Saudi Arabia, when in confinment. It is their marker for direction of prayer for Mecca, or “Qiblah” in Arabic. Christians use the North Star, Muslims use Mecca, {Qiblah}. Muslims pray 5 times a day. Agreed when traveling they need a compass to find Mecca to properly position for prayer direction. When in captivity, they cannot be told directions do to security reasons. Again, these detainees have never been charged. Their human prisoner rights are being breached. The Geneva Convention is not being followed. Muslims in Leavenworth know which direction Mecca is and they don’t abuse that knowledge. I find it Anti-American to bash and slander the Guards and other Staff at Leavenworth. I find it repolsive that Brownback would object to the Geneva Convention rules which will open the door to how American Prisoners of War are treated under equality. U.S. Senator Brownback and Roberts sacrifice our Troops rights so they can “Show Boat” Brownbacks bid for Governor. Again, he feels he is more important, personaly, than the Troops who get killed or are in “Harms Way” too secure this abused Freedom! Please click on my name above and read up on me at my website. Yea, I am the only Candidate with a Candidate site. His, is his, old Senator site. Herbert West III, Uncontested Democratic Candidate for Kansas Governor, 2010.
Oh Herbert, God love ya, but go back to sleep.
. . . . IF the detainees can’t be kept at the Gruantanomo Bay Naval facility on the eastern tip of Cuba.
I have yet to hear any rationale that makes sense for closing GITMO.
During the Bush years had liberal senators held up appointments or budget items regarding the 2 wars, the New York Times(now is seems W.E.Editorial writers too) would likely have had different opinions!
It’s amazing, since Obama’s election, how quickly the left and most mainstream media have shifted from the withdrawal of all troops in Iraq being front and center & war only created by Bush is really WAR! There is still close to 130,000 soldiers in Iraq; yet to the Left it’s different because Obama is President, so no more front page protests! The war in Afganistan is escalating with a current troop level of 68,000 and growing, but again it’s not WAR because Obama is President.
Where is the OUTRAGE from liberal senators, acitivists and even The New York Times and W.E.Editorial Board to innocent civlians killed in a recent U.S. bombing in Afganistan? Again, it’s not WAR since the left, & the media no longer have W to blame! God Bless our troops!
If the New York Times believes Gitmo should be closed, and Senators Brownback and Roberts are playing war games, a suggestion; send the detainees to a New York prison of the Times choosing, and hold the New York Times editorial board responsible for monitoring the detainees placement and treatment!
Yesterday Jerry Moran decried the culture that values “playing games” to damage the “other side” rather than accomplishing things for the American people.
Brownback made ridiculous fright-mongering claims of how detainees would be put in situations that would invite terrorist “rescue attempts” in the city streets of Fort Leavenworth, KS, as if the jailors there don’t know how to do their jobs.
Looks like the Voting Rights Act may have been a mistake!
You can’t throw a rock in Leavenworth without hitting an Al-Quida sympathizer waiting to break out their cohorts!
MH,
Please run for Gov. Give the dems and and those that are thinking people a choice other than poor Herb on your side of the ticket. Hell,I might even vote for ya
United States prisons already successfully detain over 350 convicted terrorists… this is a phony issue.
And why exactly do we want to move these people out of Guantanomo?
so my beach house can be built? Why should these people have a beach front property if the average Kansan does not?
Seems like you did the same blog entry last Thursday. Running out of ideas?
The paper did run about the same blog topic last week, me I am full of ideas. Well my best friend said I am just full of it… Maybe he meant ideas?
My question of months ago still stands:
Why move the terrorist from a perfectly good prison taxpayers built for them?
What is gained?
The time talking should have been spent giving the terrorists trials of ANY kind and getting them sentenced or released. THAT my friends is the solution.
I don’t think we need to be running a long term POW camp. It saves money to close that prison, brings the military people there back stateside.
It also spreads them out so it is less likely to be hit by an attack that lets them all out.
I don’t know how many detainees are there, but there is no reason to keep one prison just for them. I love that my grandparents, this is one area you can’t sway them on. Despite the propaganda, they actually know better, because my grandpa was an MP at the POW camp here in Kansas during WW2.
Since when did Herb become a democrat? Does the KDP know you’re running on their ticket?
Herb, dear, please listen to me. I have visited your website numerous times. It is confusing just as your posts are. Like, crazy confusing.
In order to win, you have to actually make sense.
IN all that I love MH, I don’t think he can win. You have to actually have some name recognition before you get out there. We need someone who can really take down Brownback.

Class act…
” It saves money to close that prison, brings the military people there back stateside.”
Prove it.
I became a Democrat around July 2008. Why? I don’t play party games. I rely on residents and voters not party game players. Not all Democrats, Republicans etc:.. think and feel identical on every issue. I am running on the peoples ticket. I am running in a race decided by people, not party’s. Click on my name above and visit my website. Then find “Partys VS. Issues when communicating and voting”. It is under Governor Candidate Issues. Look under “View my complete profile” under the “About Me” paragraph on the right of the webpage. Scroll to the bottom and click on the “Governor Candidate Issue” icon. Then scroll down to the 4th article. Again, I am running for the people and not any party. Negative name recognition is worse than vauge name recognition. I feel comfortable on the issues. I find that I am in tune with the common residents of Kansas. I refuse to bow to your shallow, merit less banter. You have refused to give details. You only taunt with shallow, hollow banter and boring idiologies. So Political_Mama
I got cut off. So Political_mama bring on MoneyHawk or anyone else. Be prepared to tell everyone why you confidence had to wait so long to name a candidate.
