Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., subjected Judge Sonia Sotomayor (in photo) to quite a grilling during her confirmation hearings. Yet he ended up the only Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee to support her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court today, in a 13-6 vote expected to lead to a full Senate vote next week. “I’m deciding to vote for a woman I would not have chosen,” Graham said. But it’s a “big deal” for President Obama to have nominated the first-ever Latina to the high court, he said, and “America has changed for the better with her selection.” There’s no suspense about how Kansas Sens. Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback will vote; they announced in May and June, respectively, that they would vote against her.

Time to confirm her, and move on. I really don’t care if she is Hispanic, nor do I care that she is a woman. She has made a few comments that were probably misplaced, and a few rulings that I disagreed with. Big deal. She has spent many years on the bench, and seems imminently qualified
“America has changed for the better with her selection.”
I’d like to know the reasoning behind that statement.
I care that she is a woman. I am deeply appreciative that there is progress toward equality of representation on our country’s highest court. Thank you, President Obama.
Poor Lindsey Graham,
Hasn’t been worth a crap since he lost his big impeachment case in the Senate.
He just goes along to get along now.
Sorry Linda, I am not into identity politics. But, I understand it is a driver for many. To each their own, I guess

I care that she is a woman.
=============================
I care that she has white teeth.
Women just like me listened carefully during the nominations hearings. Did I mention how reliable women voters are?

Your point? If Obama hadn;t nominated a woman? If she hadn;t been Hispanic? Would you have withheld your vote?
Men just like me listed carefully during the nomination hearings. Did I mention how reliable voters men like me are?
Pointless. Big deal. Identity politics. Go ahead
The ‘Soda Mare’ will traipse through the Supreme Court handing out wise Latina platitudes to Court Clerks and awaiting reporters.
That’s correct, Reg. Get used to it.

Well said Littlejohn.

regular – and hopefully in the not-to-distant future she will have many like-minded colleagues on the bench with her.
bth, you mean bigots like Sotomayor?
Good on her. Hope she makes her decisions based on the constitution. That is all we can ask of the Supremes right?
I don’t care about the judge’s race or sex. I just hope and pray that she turns out to be liberal. That is really what I am concerned with.
Why does Brownback and Roberts hate Latinos?
“I just hope and pray that she turns out to be liberal. That is really what I am concerned with.”
What I hope and pray for is that she stays with the Constitution.

Agnatha,
There are two things I can’t stand in this world. The first is bigots, the second are filthy Mexicans.
“Hope she makes her decisions based on the constitution. That is all we can ask of the Supremes right?”
Hopefully, the new Justice recognizes that while it IS a good foundation, the Constitution was written a very long time ago and needs frequent updating.
“Constitution was written a very long time ago and needs frequent updating.”
There is a process for that, iti is called AMENDING the Constitution. We need NO judges who decide to rule by judicial fiat
After all, changing the COnstituion by amending it is the law of the land, and contained explicitly within the Constituion
Using the sense of fair and balanced justice some have, we would still have slaves, jail time for oral stimulation with your wife, jail for anyone thinking about inter-racial marriage, and no such thing as anyone other than lily whites able to vote. We have a justice department because we live in a republic that protects the minority from majority domination. Any way you cut it, courts make laws, always have, always will.
The only robe Clarence Thomas wants to see her in is a bathrobe!

The sad thing is that Graham was the only Republican that was actually making sense. Pointing to facts and common sense rather then being disingenuous and a grumpy old man in the back of the room.
Failing to find a legitimate reason to be against her the rest played to a Conservative base who has caused the republicans to become a dwindling party.
I care too! I am a Minority; I can see this woman has crossed some lines and what has taken place in her court room is with out question a reason for subjective and strong questioning!
There is good reason to look at other candidates for this position! Having a woman or minority in the highest of courts has been done already!
Thanking Obama for what; Brining more questions to forced minority positioning he is not Martin Luther King…
Obama is the one I voted for and I must say Hillary Clinton was right when she stated he was just a community leader!!! We are going to take some major steps back if Obama does not learn to be politically correct and work with all parties and race…
Getting involved in this last local hometown ordeal leads me to question where his focus is and if he can really lead this country!
I wish I had not voted for President Obama, I do not want McCain still this is not what I want for My Country or My Family!
Lets just go and all have a beer at the white house; WOW! Way to go Mr. President you really came across solid with that mistake, I was raised that if your wrong and you know you are wrong just say (3) Three little words – I AM SORRY!
Re: wereback
Spoken like a first class member of the party of “NO” trying to justify your hate for our president. For christ sakes all he did was try to defend a friend who was in his own home. Once his identity was confirmed there was no reason to arrest him as the DA soon admitted by dropping all charges.
We had 8 years of political correct, no thanks for more of it.
