Schodorf run makes sense

schodorf1State Sen. Jean Schodorf, R-Wichita, wasn’t high on the list of likely candidates to succeed Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard, in the 4th Congressional District seat next year. But such a candidacy, which she is exploring, would add interesting ideological breadth to the GOP field. Like former congressman Dan Glickman, Schodorf started her political career on the Wichita school board, including as its president. Her eight-year tenure in the Kansas Senate is four times longer than Tiahrt’s was when he unseated Glickman in 1994. Schodorf has connections to Montgomery and Chautauqua counties, making her district base much larger than Wichita. And don’t count out the potential impact if her radio and TV ads featured the sonorous voice of her brother, TV producer and broadcaster Bill Kurtis. Those already in the GOP primary are state Sen. Dick Kelsey, R-Goddard, and Republican National Committee member Mike Pompeo.

State Senator Jean Schodorf as a candidate for Fourth district Kansas congressman would give Kansas moderate Republicans and progressive (Harry Truman) Democrats a candidate to represent their hopes and dreams.

It will be interesting to see how Jean Schodorf’s fact finding tour goes in the southeastern and some western counties of the 4th Congressional district. Of course, Wichita itself is the elephant in the 4th Congressional district.

Jean’s candidacy should add excitement to this key Kansas Congressional race to replace outgoing Todd Tiahrt.

I think she would make a respectable candidate and Congress member. If she runs I would vote for her, that in its self might be a death tone for her LOL. Since she is more a real republican, that means she and I are out of step with Conservatives. She could only win if there are more Republicans left in Kansas then Conservatives.

I would love to see Jean Schodorf run for Congress. There are many strong women in Kansas, we need more of them to have their voices heard at the national level to speak out for Kansas and represent the state.

She is nothing more than a tax and spend liberal. Her record with the taxpayer’s network is worse then many democrats.

She voted against the coal plant saying her district did not want it. She turns around later and votes for it after Sebelius leaves.

Who and what does she stand for?

Do we really need another tax and spend liberal in DC?

Politico, please look up her record. Because you keep leaving this message on every site about her and it is completely false. And to point out, the Tax Payers Network is run by Carl Peterjohn, self explanatory. I urge you to get her record and look up her ratings from actual credible organizations.

I have looked at her record. She has voted for tax increases and more spending as a Kansas Senator than some of the democrats.

Her coal plant vote was such a joke. She said the people in her district did not want it period and then she votes for it?

Her record shows her votes for taxes, fees and spending increases. It is not hard to research.

If she runs she has my vote in the primary! She is head and shoulders above the two opponents she’ll face at that stage of the election.

Linda aren’t you a Dem? you would have to change voter registration to vote in a Rep. Primary as Kansas doesn’t have a open primary. And Voting for the “Moderate” Candidate just makes it harder for the Democrat to win if the mod were to win

Already done, Tom. And did you see where the state made it even easier to change party affiliation? ONLINE, paperless!

Yes, I am proudly a Liberal Democrat, but I live in Kansas and the only place my party affiliation comes into play is in primary contests. What party usually has choices at that primary level?

If the Republican wins (and facing reality I recognize they most often do) I at least want to have a say, and hope for a more reasonable Republican, ’cause some of them are bigger nutjobs than others.

One of the campaign kid’s called me today. I’m no longer sure if their who they say they are. This kid claimed to be with Brownback.

Any way, the Party seems upset over Schodorf’s candidacy. The kid think’s she’s a lose cannon. Dennis Moor Lite.

I’ve never seen the Party this involved in backstabbing.

It’s as if their determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Brownback will win, of course. Either Tihart or Moran will win, and I’m ok with that. No Dem will win in the 1st. Jenkins is safe. Kelsey or Pompeo can easily win if one if one of them drop’s out.

Shodorf is the wild card. I’ve met her a couple of time’s but don’t really know her. She seem’s pretty bright and just might be able to deliver the out counties of the 4th District. If she can split Wichita three ways she’s in.

    Kansas_Heffalump,

You are full of schitt. How many ‘kids’ have called you in the last month, like one everyday? Then you conveniently report the call to WE Blog….

Sounds like one of Jed’s stories to me.

Voter turnout is very low in August and tends to be dominated by “true believers”. This will make it very difficult for Schodorf to win. However, the likelihood of a Kelsey/Pompeo split might help her.

Steve Howe beat Phill Kline in a Johnson County primary that included most of the 3rd District’s conservative base.

Lynn Jenkins beat Jim Ryun in a 2nd District primary by running to his left.

Don’t count Schodorf out just yet! It’s possible that Republican primary voters may be more interested in winning a race rather than losing over ideological purity.

Lindainks55: I think you are on the right track. I suspect you are more of a moderate Republican than a progressive Democrat. A problem is the Kansas Republican party was taken over by a group of right wing conservatives who chased out long time volunteer Republican party workers. This conservative group should have another name, for example, Brown Shirt political group, Gestapo Republicans, 4th Reich political cell, etc.

On the other hand, the Wichita Democrats some times appear to be bordering on socialists with a flavor of Browderism thrown in. Of course, Earl Browder was a Wichita favorite son, the only Wichitan nominated twice for President of the United States, once in 1936 and again in 1940. His party, of course: the Communist Party of the United States. Needless to say, Browder was trounced both times by FDR.

So hope you hang in there and support your own interests in the upcoming elections.

JWink, I’m more fiscally conservative than most people who call themselves conservative today, but on social issues I am definitely liberal! And I’m repulsed by what has become of the Grand Old Party. Everything that was grand about it has disappeared. I don’t think conservatives of today bear any resemblance to what Republican used to stand for.

I agree with thomaswitt. Coaltion conservatives have been defeated in most primaries against moderates, especially in large races, and this has been a trend since the Kansas Schoolboard elections of 1998. It is way too early to count Schodorf out (particularly because she will probably have the advantage of name recognition).

As for Politico…sure looks like the proll Econ101/Franklin/Paulie with the short talking point paragraphs to me.

You know, those congressional house seats are highly prized political offices. High pay, retirement after only two terms so I’ve been told, medical/dental benefits, other outstanding perks and even snacks when later visiting D.C. A luxurious office near the Capitol building, a number of staff members some in Washington, some in Kansas.

So I suspect more candidates will jump out of the woodwork very soon.

Say for example, Bob Knight would jump in. I HAVE NO INFORMATION THAT HE IS THINKING OF IT. But another male in the race would most likely split the vote among the males thus icing the congressional office for Jean Schodorf.
