Parkinson as Lassie

lassie“If he manages to get the state through this difficult budget year and puts together a reasonable budget for the coming fiscal year, well, that would be the equivalent of Lassie pulling a child out of a burning barn,” Martin Hawver of Hawver’s Capitol Report wrote about Gov. Mark Parkinson. Hawver also predicted that GOP lawmakers would maneuver to make sure that Parkinson “at some point has to do something so distasteful and drastic to save the state’s budget” that he couldn’t change his mind and run for election in 2010. “Republicans are happy to hear Parkinson say he won’t seek election,” Hawver wrote, “but being the party of belts and suspenders, they’d like to make sure he couldn’t be elected, anyway.”

Why is it, as a moderate Republican, I keep getting slapped in the face, figuratively, by the conservative Republican faction? Of course, Parkinson was a Republican who pragmatically switched to the Democratic side to serve as Lt. Governor. He then became Kansas Governor when Governor Sebelius exited for Washington D.C.

If we must convince current Gov. Mark Parkinson to run for Governor on the Democratic ticket in the 2010 election to keep Sam Brownback from being handed the Governor’s office on a golden platter, so be it.

    Just to be clear –

I am not now, nor have I ever been, a candidate for Governor of the great State of Kansas.

Lassie wouldn’t have okd the coal plant.

    Parkinson did.

We can’t be rid of him soon enough to suit me.

Blue: We don’t agree often but I too didn’t agree with Parkinson’s approval of the additional coal fired power plant out at Holcomb, Ks. However, didn’t that approval get nullified within the past few weeks and it must again go through the approval process?

Burma Shave signs on the state roads, William Conrad as Matt Dillon on the radio version of Gunsmoke and the early TV Lassie with the infamous whistling theme song at beginning and closing credits.

As time as changed, being frugal or penny-wise has changed.

The actor that played the boy on the early TV Lassie never made it as an adult actor and became a DBASE Software Engineer. From calling dogs to calling code – someone’s gotta do it.

Didn’t Kathleen Sebelius offer this same compromise of ONE coal-fired power plant and have it turned down by the Republican-dominated Congress?

I agree it would be best for Kansas if there is a viable opponent for Brownback. Are there any possibles? If Parkinson has made his decision, what others might be considered?

This thread header made me think about a delightful book titled, “Life is Good! lessons in joyful living” written by Trixie Koontz (dog) and edited by Dean Koontz (Trixie’s Dad).

Trixie writes about movies saying, “Life is good if you go to movies.”

    –snip–
“In Thin Man movies is smart dog named Asta. Like all dogs, Asta is funny. All dogs except Old Yeller — and Lassie, so busy saving Timmy, she never had time to be funny. And did Timmy ever give her peanut butter? No. Mostly, he just said, ‘Thanks, girl,’ and ran straight off into burning barn or quicksand.”

If Parkinson brings our state and her citizens through these challenging times, he has earned our thanks and our respect for his decisions about his future. And we Kansans would be best served if we didn’t rush head long into another burning building!

Politics is made even less worthy of respect if predictions like, “GOP lawmakers would somehow maneuver to make sure that Parkinson, at some point has to do something so distasteful and drastic to save the state’s budget that he couldn’t change his mind and run for election in 2010,” become reality. It is these kinds of thoughts and actions that tell all citizens the good of the state isn’t as important as being (re)elected. Will we ever move politics beyond this?

Lassie was nothing but the most successful female impersonator in the history of the movies.

    (Not counting Charlton Heston.)

laughing! Wasn’t Lassie a male impersonator? She had ’sticktoitiveness,’ never gave up and kept trying to rescue Timmy. Makes you wonder how smart Timmy was — barely rescued and got himself into another life-threatening situation.

Kinda like us voters! Just enough challenges met, disasters diverted to make us fantasize our best interests are at the heart of politicians.

btw, Trixie says, “Don’t go see ‘Old Yeller!’ Ending sucks! ‘Old Yeller’ written by angry, hateful, crazy cat! Or Satan!”

Now I’m confused and feeling more stupid than usual. Did a female dog play a male in Lassie episodes? Or the other way around? Google is my friend, I’ll find out. Sheesh.

Given the fact that the rank and file of the Kansas Legislature has become drooling fanatics (either far right Christian, faux fiscal conservative/anti-tax nutcases, or in too many instances, both), this statement is probably unfortunately all too prophetic. But stop and think about this for a second. What fine public servants, to damage the state just to make sure that Parkinson can’t change his mind.

I really hope that Hawver is underestimating the legislature.

It’s sad, because I remember when the Kansas legislature really was a largely responsible body.

Yes Lassie was a male dog playing a female. They are 10 to 20 lbs heavier and bigger is one reason why. The Collies name was “Pal”. Owned by Rudd and Frank Weathermax. The other, main, reason a male dog was used is, both males and females shed during summer. But the males have a thicker coat and shed less retaining the look of their size year round. Some of ther stunt dogs were female. The main character dog was a male for close ups and direct camera shots. Weathermax got “Pal” as a debt settlement for services from a Kennel he owned. The original owner wanted the dog broke from chasing motorcycles. After Weathermax had the dog awhile the original owner did not want him back. The dog was given to settle the debt of trying to train the dog. His brother Frank actualy trained the dog but Rudd cast the dog. They also trained “Spike” who stared in “Old Yellor”. They also trained, Toto and Asta. Toto was in “The Wizard of Oz”. Asta was in, “The Thin Man”, and a series of “Thin Man” movies.
