A front page article in this morning’s EAGLE says: “Coliseum may close in Feb; With (the three adjacent) pavilions losing money, (Sedgwick County) commissioners see few other options.”

The pavilions are used for horse shows, gun shows and similar activities, none of which are willing to move to the new white elephant downtown arena.

I was told during the hot controversy about building the new downtown Intrust arena vs renovating the Coliseum property … that only $60 million would have completely renovated the 10,000 seat Britt Brown Arena and the three horse show pavilions plus expanding and re-striping the existing very efficient 4,000 car parking lot.

As everyone knows, the Kansas Coliseum was a bargain for taxpayers of Sedgwick County when it was built several decades ago and still looks good from the adjacent I-135 freeway.

Unfortunately the new albatross downtown arena is one of those expensive deals that will keep on giving: continued drain on tax revenues, a parking drain on arena neighborhood private parking lots, traffic problems that will continue to chase existing companies away from downtown Wichita.

As the downtown Intrust arena deficit continues to increase like the national deficit and debt, you can thank your holdover Sedgwick county commissioners, Tim Norton and David Unruh for this royal financial mess.

I understand and don’t disagree with your comments on the InTrust Arena.

But it’s fait accomplis, and the only way to deal with it is to deal with it.

Maybe if I were still in Wichita or Sedgwick County I’d be more excited to gripe about it.

But it doesn’t seem to accomplish anything unless to set you up for future “I told ya so” posturing.

MH: Believe me, I understand what you are saying and don’t enjoy being a voice against a project that some perceive as a public improvement.

But someone has to continue to keep the feet to the fire of these failed holdover county commissioners and imported bureaucrats who are justifying their salaries on the back of the white elephant arena.

In a nutshell, as I have explained many times, when I came back the Wichita about ten years or so ago, it was apparent that downtown Wichita needed big help to get moving again. My image was of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza and some other cities I am familiar with, the north shore communities of Chicago, Alexandria, Virginia, Eureka, California, etc., etc.

Being a commercial real estate broker throughout the Kansas City metro area since 1972, I was very much involved in everything positive that went on up there.

My thought was to get involved as a volunteer to help revitalize downtown Wichita. But the big money bureaucrats, the “Music Men” selling non-existent band uniforms, along with the mis-guided Visioneering group, decided to draw a circle around a few blocks of downtown Wichita. Then hire an architect and contractor to build the Intrust arena. That was the easy way out for amateurs.

Their theory was, “build it and they will come” from that Clint Eastwood movie set in Iowa. Unfortunately Clint Eastwood and that movie has cost urban taxpayers billions of wasted dollars across America for these ill-fated downtown arenas.

Convention centers would have been much preferable, to actually increase commerce in these cities.

In Wichita, the downtown arena was built WITHOUT any meaningful prior planning that now threatens the very downtown it was supposed to save. And most of its prime supporters have since moved on, out of Wichita leaving Wichita taxpayers holding the bag for the snipes that won’t come.

Documents: Boeing worried about aging work force
Court documents: Former Boeing official says company was concerned about aging work force
By Roxana Hegeman, Associated Press Writer

WICHITA, Kansas (AP) — The top official at Boeing Co.’s former commercial airplane operations in Kansas and Oklahoma acknowledged the aerospace giant had concerns about the age of its work force when it was trying to sell those facilities, according to court documents in an age-discrimination lawsuit.

{”s” : “ba,ocx.to”,”k” : “c10,l10,p20,t10″,”o” : “”,”j” : “”} Former Boeing workers have sued the Chicago-based company and Spirit Aerosystems Inc., which was formed after its Canada-based parent, Onex Corp., bought Boeing’s commercial aircraft operations in Wichita and Tulsa and McAlester, Oklahoma. They claim they lost their jobs because of their age and are seeking class-action status for the lawsuit, which was filed in December 2005.

According to court documents filed this week in U.S. District Court in Wichita, depositions from Jeff Turner, a former Boeing manager and current CEO of Spirit, and other company officials indicated that Boeing and Spirit considered older workers to be more expensive.

“An aging work force in and of itself is — is difficult, problematic for the business, for sustaining the business long-term,” Turner said in his deposition.

Spirit spokeswoman Debbie Gann declined to comment Wednesday, noting the litigation is ongoing. Boeing spokesman Jarrod Bartlett said he could not comment because he had not seen the court documents. An attorney for the companies did not return a message.

In earlier court papers, the companies denied any employment decisions were made based on age, although Boeing acknowledged that it evaluated the correlation between wages and age brackets.

The former workers say Boeing studied how it could cut costs associated with older workers and that Spirit adopted their plans to reduce the age of the work force. When Boeing sold the Kansas and Oklahoma operations, it laid off all 9,300 workers at those plants. Onex then asked people to reapply for their jobs. At the time, Onex, which is not part of the lawsuit, said it had hired more than 8,000 former Boeing workers.

The lawsuit claims Spirit used that process to get rid of older employees. Internal Spirit documents noted that workers ages 45 to 54 were considered the most expensive, according to the court filing, and the company needed “to move employees out of this age range.”

The lawsuit was filed by 90 former employees. More than 700 additional ex-workers have since asked to join the suit.

The former workers are seeking their jobs back, along with unspecified compensatory damages and at least $1.5 billion in punitive damages.

NEW YORK — A New York City teenager has admitted that she failed to let a kitten out of an oven after a friend put the animal inside and left it to roast to death.

After pleading guilty to charges of animal cruelty and attempted burglary on Wednesday, 17-year-old Cheyenne Cherry confronted a row of animal activists outside the courtroom. Cherry stuck out her tongue and told the activists that the kitten named Tiger Lily was “dead.”

Authorities say Cherry and a 14-year-old friend ransacked a Bronx apartment before putting the cat in the oven, where it cried and scratched before dying.

The 14-year-old was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and burglary in the May 6 incident.

Cherry will serve a year in jail under a plea bargain.

Recently, Nancy Pelosi and her fellow liberals in Congress passed a massive new Cap and Trade Energy Tax in the House. This potentially devastating legislation that would threaten thousands of American jobs and cause energy prices to skyrocket now moves to the Senate and could be voted on as early as September. Meanwhile, the Obama Administration is attacking our energy security on another front.

Soon after he was confirmed as Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar announced that his department would be scrapping the plan for offshore oil and natural gas drilling and exploration developed by the previous administration.

Every five years the Department of the Interior’s U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS), the agency responsible for offshore oil and gas leasing in the United States, develops a Five-Year Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) leasing program that helps schedule offshore oil and gas lease sales. Instead of sticking to the plan in place, Salazar’s MMS is changing the rules on energy companies in the middle of the game.

Please call Secretary Salazar at 1 (877) 851-2516 and tell him that altering the Draft Proposed Program for 2010-2015 already in place, threatens our energy supply and could send gas prices through the roof.

The Obama Administration has made no secret about their desire to see less oil, gas, and other tried-and-true fossil fuels on the table and their plans to limit energy production will increase energy prices. The truth is, we need all energy options on the table and the government shouldn’t be picking and choosing winners.

Higher energy costs mean fewer jobs and rising costs on everything from food to transportation to heating and electricity. Expanding offshore drilling and producing more energy would lower costs and help create more jobs.

The middle of an economic crisis is no time to start changing how business is done for the businesses, workers, and families that rely on the availability of the billions of barrels of oil and trillions of cubic feet of natural gas just off our own shores. New technology has made energy exploration more environmentally friendly and safer for workers.

Call Secretary Salazar at 1 (877) 851-2516 and tell him we need more energy not less. And if you have another moment, please send an email to the agency. Let him know you support the Draft Proposed Program for 2010-2015 – the plan already in place.

Congressional plans to fund a massive health-care overhaul could have a job-killing effect on New York, creating a tax rate of nearly 60 percent for the state’s top earners and possibly pressuring small-business owners to shed workers.

New York’s top income bracket could reach as high as 57 percent — rates not seen in three decades — to pay for the massive health coverage proposed by House Democrats this week.

That means New York’s top earners, small-business owners and most dynamic entrepreneurs will be facing new fees and penalties.

The $544 billion tax hike would violate one of President Obama’s ironclad campaign promises: No family will pay higher tax rates than they would have paid in the 1990s.

Under the bill, three new tax brackets would be created for high earners, with a top rate of 45 percent for families making more than $1 million. That would be the highest income-tax rate since 1986, when the top rate was 50 percent.

The legislation is especially onerous for business owners, in part because it penalizes employers with a payroll bigger than $400,000 some 8 percent of wages if they don’t offer health care.

But the cost of the buy-in to the program may be so prohibitive that it will dissuade owners from growing their businesses — a scary prospect in the midst of a recession.

Over the Memorial Day holiday I talked with an architect who works for HOK in Kansas City. They’re the firm that’s designed and built new stadiums (stadia?) and arenas all over the world.

As with most big projects, the more you know about ‘em, the more complicated it gets.

These days you have to have a building with a dressing room that meets Mick Jagger’s or Cher’s specifications one night and can feed and water 20 elephants the next. It’s all about logistics.

The Kansas Coliseum was fine for its day.

But times and standards change and the Coliseum is simply out of date.

Now, I’m not sure Wichita is capable of selling more than 10,000 tickets for any arena show. But it’s a slam-dunk reality no decent arena act is gonna bother with a building that doesn’t meet the backstage specs most of ‘em expect these days.

The logistics of having, say, a hockey matinee and an evening indoor tractor-pull are largely dependent on the design of the building.

I hope the InTrust Arena addresses some of those logistics. But, knowing Wichita, it probably doesn’t.

Good News: Comprehensive Report Challenges Global-Warming Alarmism

“An authoritative new book draws on thousands of peer-reviewed research papers and books, plus additional scientific research, as it challenges popular concerns that global warming is either man-made or would have harmful effects.

The hefty “Climate Change Reconsidered: The 2009 Report of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change” weighs in at more than 4 pounds, and is available free online.

“We see no evidence whatsoever for the claim that the warming of the last 50 years is due to human activities,” co-author Dr. S. Fred Singer said in presenting the report. “On the contrary … we see evidence against man-made global warming.”

Singer and Dr. Craig Idso, as well as 35 contributors and reviewers, offer an authoritative and detailed rebuttal of the findings of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), on which the Obama administration and Democrats in Congress have relied for regulatory proposals, including the energy tax known as “Cap and Trade.”

“This is really not about science,” Singer said. “What is really going on — not only in Washington, but in Europe and elsewhere — is money and power. That is what it’s all about.”

I have just returned from the Warren 13th Avenue Theatre, where I had hoped to sublimate the s–thole symphonies of life with cinematic transcendence.

Whom did I look upon to effect this stellar feat?

None other than Sasha Baron Cohen (a.k.a. “Borat”) – whose latest effort – “Bruno” – rose to the same heights as did Borat two and a half years ago.

When I saw that film – at the now-defunct Premiere Palace that is now the Morningstar Church – I very nearly had to be air-lifted from the theatre as the credits rolled. Cohen was that funny. “Borat” was hilarious, touching, poignant, and induced gales of laughter in this world-weary demi-diva.

So, I hoped for the same with this latest flick. Did it succeed? Well………………….

Posted July 16, 2009 at 8:59 pm | Permalink

Let’s give the comedian/turned/gay-designer credit: Cohen is (or was) one of the hairest males ever birthed of a b-word. In fact, after viewing “Borat”, I felt I should be hunting in packs and burying my food.

But for “Bruno” – the funnyman has waxed every hair follicle on his bodola except his ‘brows. And that’s the gawd’s honest truth.

At first, “Bruno” was funny. And then……….

Well………

The FilmFan may pi$$ off a few people (or a lot of people) with this review. But here goes. At this stage in my life – when The Big One may be lurking just around the corner, what do I care about political correctness? I probably care about it more than Anita Bryant, but what the #$%^.

I just spent nine dollars on this film excursion, so I have the frigging right to speak out.

So, I’m gonna do just that…..

Posted July 16, 2009 at 9:02 pm | Permalink

Oh, by the way – when I cited “The Big One” – I meant another heart attack – not, well……

Ee-yew.

“Bruno” started out funny and quickly deteriorated into just plain grotesquerie. It wasn’t funny. It was just too graphic. And Big Bertha’s got a confession to make – I’m not a fan of non-heterosexual, male activities. Especially when those activities involve small, furry rodents.

I’m all for pride. I’m all for love. I’m all for acceptance. I’ve never been a fan of violence and never will be.

But this b—h didn’t really care for much of the humor in “Bruno.” Because it was really, really graphic. I think it was supposed to be funny.

It wasn’t funny.

How un-funny was it? Well………

From the very beginning, you’ll be wondering how this flick escaped an “X” rating. (It’s rated “R” for you filmfans out there….) Because there’s some full-frontal friskiness going on.

And it didn’t, um, “engage” me. Nope – not at all. This evening, I saw the first Full Monty that talked – and I wasn’t amused. And I didn’t laugh, either.

But the scenes that depicted “certain” amatory adventures just plain turned this chick off. How much? Well, any film that can make The Westboro Baptist buffoons seem semi-human – in the wake of what the filmfan has just observed in the previous obscene, er, SCENE – well, my goodness gracious……..

It was that bad.

58. FilmFan
Posted July 16, 2009 at 9:11 pm | Permalink

I can’t really judge all the film, because I walked out 20 minutes before the end. A scene with a bleached-blond bimbo with the ugliest, fake gazongas I had ever seen just sort of pushed me over the edge.

No – “Bruno” didn’t take my mind off my troubles. No, Mr. Baron Cohen didn’t make me forget the fact that my brother doesn’t seem to want a relationship…..My day job was just eliminated…….that probably wasn’t no “panic attack” I enjoyed two weeks ago……and the big broadola ain’t gettin’ any younger and she’s still had less amatory activities than Queen Victoria.

After she was embalmed.

In fact, seeing filth like this makes me wonder, “Maybe sex really IS filthy – as the early church fathers intoned.”

Maybe all these years of celibacy aren’t such a bad thing.

Because I’m not a fan of crapola like this. And I’ve gotta say it here and now: People who engage in “certain” activities deserve to be ridiculed. They don’t deserve to be physically attacked. They certainly deserve to live.

But they don’t deserve my tacit approval. Because it really isn’t forthcoming.

And the FilmFan’s out nine bucks right about now. And not all that happy about, either…..

“The House proposal will begin the process of fixing what’s broken about our health care system, reducing costs for all, building on what works, and covering an estimated 97% of all Americans”

- President Obama, July 14, 2009

Those are the words by President Obama on the historic legislation that was introduced this week in the House to finally lower health care costs, provide a public option, and offer greater choice and a higher quality of care for all Americans.

The status quo of skyrocketing health care expenses for America’s families shows the true cost of doing nothing. If we fail to act, the cost of health care for the average family of four is projected to rise by $1,800 every year for years to come and insurance companies will make more health care decisions.

This bill is a cause for hope, but also a reminder of the tough fight ahead.

Republicans in Congress, backed by powerful special interests, are already recycling their same playbook of fear mongering that they used to block President Clinton’s health care reform. They’re even calling it “Hillarycare Revisited.”

America’s Affordable Health Choices Act – The Details >>>>

Here is what the House legislation will mean for America’s middle class families…

GUARANTEED COVERAGE – The days of being denied coverage because of a preexisting condition – or being forced to pay higher premiums because of it – would be over thanks to the House bill. Insurance companies will also be prohibited from other discriminatory practices like charging higher rates because of gender, health status, or other factors.

GREATER CHOICE – If you like your doctor, your local hospital, or your current insurance plan, you can keep it under the House bill. It also sets up a health insurance exchange to act as a marketplace where individuals and small employers will be able to comparison-shop among private and public insurers.

LOWER COSTS FOR EVERYONE – The House bill would lower health care costs for all Americans. It ends co-pays and deductibles for preventative care and puts an end to rate increases for preexisting conditions. It will give you access to the lower group rates from a national pool if you buy your own plan. It also includes a public option to compete with private insurers and caps annual out-of-pocket spending to prevent bankruptcy from medical expenses.

HIGHER QUALITY – The House bill makes sure that you and your doctor make health care decisions, not insurance companies. It provides new incentives, scholarships, and training to encourage the very best and brightest to become doctors and nurses.

PREVENTION AND WELLNESS – The House bill also expands community health centers, strengthens wellness and prevention services, provides oral, hearing, and vision care for children, and ensures that mental health care is covered.

“StevenEDavis” & “FilmFan” –

I read a piece today (maybe via buzzfeed) how Sasha Baron Cohen never gets sued successfully.

Some people will sign anything if they think there’s a chance they might make it on TV.

And it’s easiest to go to the Deep South where no one has ever head of Ali G., or Borat, or Bruno.

Look at those who show up in his films.

They’re almost all redneck wing-nuts, aren’t they?

I enjoyed most of “Borat” but chose to wait ’til it came on Netflix. I’ve approached “Bruno” the same way. Even with the lure of movie theater popcorn slathered with processed non-petroleum imitation hydrogenated fat ‘t augmented by beef-, pork-, and/or poultry-based human-consumable fat product. With artificial flavorings, I rarely feel like I have to be one of the first people to see a new film.

I can’t remember the last time I dropped ten bucks to see a movie with people running away in silhouette from a ball of fire. Fantasy films — i.e., the Lord of the Rings cycle and Harry Potter and Adam Sandler films — simply don’t attract me.

Anyway, I probably won’ts, see “Bruno” ’til next Thanksgiving or so. For six months, I feel like a superior person to you.

From Josh Marshall –

Josh Marshall

You remember the C Street Group, the combo Bible fellowship and group home for members of Congress up on Capitol Hill. But it’s been occurring to us that the C Street Group, which is an emanation of a shadowy religious outfit called “the Family”, might not be a religious fellowship at all so much as a covert 12 Step Group from Republican Hound Dogs, womanizers and sex addicts trying to get clean during their tenure in the hallowed halls of Congress.

Less than a month ago, we had C Streeter John Ensign take a dive. Then just a week or so later it was South Carolina Mark Sanford, himself a C Streeter from his days in Congress. And in his tell-all (but not quite all) press conference just after his return from Argentina he said that he’d been working with the C Street Group to deal with his on-going affair, which I guess didn’t help that much.

And today we have news of yet another C Streeter falling off the fidelity wagon.

Now it’s the turn of former Rep. Chip Pickering (R) or Mississippi, who appeared to be in line to grab Trent Lott’s Senate seat and was allegedly offered the gig by Gov. Haley Barbour (his office denied this to TPMmuckraker), but decided instead to leave Congress altogether.

Pickering and his wife divorced soon afterward and now she is suing the novelistically named Elizabeth Creekmore-Byrd for “alienation of affection,” i.e., for stealing her husband. What’s more, according to legal papers filed by Leisha Pickering, some of the “wrongful conduct” between Pickering and Creekmore-Byrd (I guess that’s what they call it down there?) took place at … you guessed, the C Street group home up on Capitol Hill.

I mean, I don’t know about their politics. But these dudes know how to party. I don’t see how you get around that.

Hansen’s article is not valid and contains multiple flaws. He should go back and review the 2nd law of thermodynamics and quit being molested by Algore.

I’m just so glad that dumb evil Bush is back in Texas and Obama is in charge. Things are so much better than they were at this time last year.

Joe Biden: ‘We Have to Go Spend Money to Keep From Going Bankrupt’
Thursday, July 16, 2009
By Penny Starr, Senior Staff Writer

Vice President Joe Biden told people attending an AARP town hall meeting that unless the Democrat-supported health care plan becomes law the nation will go bankrupt and that the only way to avoid that fate is for the government to spend more money.

Great economic plan. We should all adopt it for our personal finances.

An American GI is captured in Afganistan and the gov sits silently by.

KABUL – July is shaping up as the deadliest month of the Afghan war for U.S.-led international forces, with the number killed already matching the highest full-month toll of the nearly eight-year conflict, according to figures compiled by The Associated Press.

And where is our prez. Well he is out trying to cram a health care down the throats of protesting Americans and couldn’t care less what is happening around the world. Afterall he did apologize to every courtry that matters – what more can he do.

We have had arguments about what Obama said and when he said it on the blog about those ’shovel ready jobs’ but this video clips lets you hear him say it in his own words. Very interesting.

I bet those 2.3 million workers who have lost their jobs SINCE the stimulus package passed wish Obama was a man of his word.

I first had panic attacks when I was twenty-one, and it has been seven years since that time… I am taking Xanax for years and it’s been awfully addictive to me, and I’m heavily rely on medication! I am searching for alternative anxiety relief system that may help me gain complete recovery. I saw many have positive result with natural online panic treatment, I’m wondering if these sort of remedy truly do works?

Last few days, I stumble on this web site – Panic Relief, and I’m not sure if this is what I am attempting to find. It introduced 3 online programs that I never heard about, I wonder if any person had any experience?

Should I continue to take medicine or try alternative therapy? Any advice would be greatly appreciated…!
