Sotomayor opponents are out-gunned

APTOPIX Obama Supreme CourtA group of 26 conservative leaders of the gun-rights movement this week called upon the Senate not to confirm Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. But their opposition is unlikely to get much traction, as American Bar Association this week gave Sotomayor its highest rating, and the Fraternal Order of Police and other law-enforcement organizations reiterated their support for the nominee. Chuck Canterbury, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said of Sotomayor: “She is a model jurist: tough, fair-minded and mindful of the constitutional protections afforded to all U.S. citizens.”

U.S. needs to keep up with China on energy innovation

solarpanels1Columnist and best-selling author Thomas Friedman doesn’t support cap-and-trade legislation merely because of climate-change concerns. Friedman sees it as key to keeping us from being “laggards in the next great global industry.” Friedman wrote that China is already focusing on energy efficiency and clean power systems. “And when China starts to do that in a big way _ when it starts to develop solar, wind, batteries, nuclear and energy efficiency technologies on its low-cost platform _ watch out,” Friedman said. “You won’t just be buying your toys from China. You’ll be buying your energy future from China.”

Tiahrt-Glickman rematch?

glickman5Is Dan Glickman interested in running for Senate in 2010? “I suppose I’m genetically interested in it. I’ve always been interested in politics and public service,” he told Politico. But Glickman, a former Democratic member of Congress from Wichita and current chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, said one problem is that he’s not a great fundraiser. “To run for Senate requires you to do nothing but raise huge quantities of money, and fundraising isn’t interesting or attractive to me,” he said. But the possibility of a rematch with Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard _ who defeated Glickman in 1994 and is running for Senate _ is intriguing. “Well, I guess it would be a very interesting revenge match, but I like Todd,” Glickman said.
