Pope supports new economic order

Pope USIf President Obama is an ungodly socialist, as some people think, what is Pope Benedict? The pope this week decried the “scandal of glaring inequalities” in the world economy and supported the redistribution of wealth. He also argued that “lowering the level of protection accorded to the rights of workers, or abandoning mechanisms of wealth redistribution in order to increase the country’s international competitiveness, hinder the achievement of lasting development.” The pope disagreed with those who believe that the economy should be free of government regulation, and he supported “a political, juridical and economic order” that can help “manage the global economy.”

Global warming censorship now on other foot?

globalwarming27Jim Hansen, the director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, received a lot of attention for his claim that the Bush administration was censoring his views supporting man-made global warming. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Republican officials are calling for an investigation into whether Alan Carlin, a senior analyst at the Environmental Protection Agency, was censored for expressing doubts about global warming. Carlin was forbidden by his boss from having “any direct communication” with anyone outside of his office regarding his criticisms of global warming claims.

Why Kansas’ tuition is going up and Oklahoma’s isn’t

schooltuitionWhy is tuition going up from 3.9 to 8.5 percent at Kansas regents universities while Oklahoma froze tuition increases at its state schools? “The short answer is that the Oklahoma legislature treated its higher education system better than the Kansas Legislature treated its system,” the Lawrence Journal-World reported. It noted that, counting federal stimulus dollars, the Oklahoma higher education system experienced a 3 percent funding increase, while the Kansas system was cut 3 percent during the Legislative session — and then Gov. Mark Parkinson announced another 2 percent allotment cut last week. In addition, Kansas regents universities were told to direct two-thirds of the stimulus funds for deferred maintenance projects, the Journal-World reported, while Oklahoma has more flexibility in using the federal funds.

Sanford at the bat

sanfordmark2The saga of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has inspired a rewriting of “Casey at the Bat,” which concludes:
“A hundred eyes were on him as he fumbled with his thoughts,
“They watched him struggle with the trouble his actions had done wrought;
“He labored more of other women of whom he shared some wine,
“Though quickly added he hadn’t crossed the forbidden line.”

“Oh somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright,
“The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
“And somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout,
“But there’s no joy in Charleston—mighty Sanford has struck out.”
