Time was up on Palin pregnancy jokes

lettermanpalin1The uproar over David Letterman’s unfunny joke about Sarah Palin’s daughter demonstrated that even a deft comedian gets his timing wrong. According to the nonpartisan Center for Media and Public Affairs, the late-night tally of jokes about Bristol Palin’s pregnancy included, as of mid-March: Conan O’Brien, 20; Jay Leno, 15; Letterman, eight; Jon Stewart, four. Some were twofers, joking about the sexual activity of John Edwards and pro hockey players. “Saturday Night Live” even did a joke about incest — just a few weeks before Sarah Palin was a guest on the show. Letterman didn’t help himself by getting his teenage Palins confused in the latest joke. But “why did this one draw such a reaction?” asked Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Michael Smerconish. “Letterman’s timing was waaaay off.”

Somehow my mind has changed on Letterman. I used to enjoy his shows. Now I see him as a cheap, opportunistic, scuzzy, pandering, would-be jokester, not worthy of wasting time watching.

I’m not sure Letterman’s bad joke was so much timing as it was just a bad joke. But Sara got some mileage out of it for sure. I’m so looking forward to her 2012 run for President. For the comic relief if nothing else.

It drew such a reaction because almost every public word uttered by any person of any consequence is scrutinized by both sides for possible political gain. And if they think they’ve found something, they roll it out through personal contacts, news releases, arm-twisting, and any other leverage they can possible bring to bear, to see if once again, the dumb-ssed media runs with it. It was a stupid joke on a stupid late night show and deserves our attention no more or less than an ejaculation or two in Argentina.

It makes you think a free press isn’t that big of deal after all, if all it does is confuse us. That seems to be the point of it all; get us so ditzy we can’t think and then sell us vacacaca. My digital camera only has 6 megapixels.

    Get a grip.

    It was a “bit.”

One of 10 lame remarks on a theme. One of the middle jokes. It was a throw-away line.

And the butt of the joke was A-Rod, who Letterman gigged earlier in the show.

The Top Ten List was aimed at Palin’s Beverly Snowbillies junket to New York for no particular reason than to attract media attention.

It would have been the same joke if he’d said the Moose-Dresser herself got knocked up by A-Rod during the 7th Inning Stretch.

Concurrent to the joke, was perpetuating a snow job and irking Repubic Party fat cats with her on-again-off-again agreement to speak at their fund-raiser.

The reaction to Letterman was typical CON behavior: deflect and attack.

A tempest in a teacup. And frankly, not a good example of the Moose-Dresser’s presidential gravitas.

Palin has moved along to the next outrage! Once again someone has done something she takes offense at. Does there seem to be one common denominator in all these feuds? Why, yes, it seems to be Palin herself.

Here’s a good explanation of her current outrage over, “…malicious desecration of a photo of the Governor and baby Trig that has become an iconic representation of a mother’s love for a special needs child.” Even if you don’t read it, you’ll enjoy the ‘doctored up’ picture of President Obama if you scroll down after the words.

What really amuses me about this particular flap is how CONs somehow think they’re on the winning side.

How CONs run to the defense of the Moose-Dresser as if she were the salvation of the Repubic Party.

How this little piece of trailer snow machine trash could somehow be taken seriously as presidential timber.

How bereft of any policy or philosophy CONs are when it comes to addressing the real and pressing challenges of the 21st Century.

Joe Scarborough (of all people) was on NPR this morning and had the audacity to say, “Ronald Reagn would never say Barack Obama is a communist or Sotomayor is a racist.”

The CONs whose views we see on WE Blog every day are so far out of the mainstream their posts seem like helpless flopping around on the riverbank.

I guess I have a sadistic streak because I enjoy watching their death throes.

    Keep it up, CONs!

Have you seen the new website started by some folks with advertising experience whose jobs are rebranding, updating, freshening images of various organizations, brands and products? They have decided to ‘rebrand’ the GOP, and are asking for everyone’s input. They say they aren’t either Republican or Democrat, aren’t being paid, haven’t been hired, but want to do this as a social experiment.

One of the posts is an NCAA-type bracket where they’ve put their Sweet Sixteen and are asking visitors to vote on the contests they’ve bracketed. Their Sweet Sixteen includes most of the usual suspects — Rush, Hannity, Coulter, Gingrich, Giulliani, Rove, Scarborough… (they didn’t include Palin, although they do include Colbert!). The four regions are titled, “Theodore Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, Dwight D. Eisenhower.”

The whole site is worth a look for the entertainment value.

I’m not sure where The Obama’s wife’s generous derriere fits into this, but you know, despite some rather public personal failures by Republican politicians, I think that I would still rather belong to a party that aspires to high values and principles, rather than one in which the majority think that we are just smart animals and just can’t responsible for controlling those natural urges.

So while it leaves a party open to claims of hypocrisy when someone fails to uphold their claimed principles, should they lower the bar just to make sure everyone can get over?

There’s that lowest common denominator thing again.

Monkey just for the record. When Hank first posted about the first ladies behind I said it was out of line. And when Sanford pulled his stupid stunt by disappearing for a week I said to kick his butt to the curb and put his wife in his chair. I think she is more qualified than he is.

So I am at least consistent in what I post. Unlike Linda who has never met a lib woman she didn’t love, or heard a Palin joke she didn’t think was funny.

She calls me hateful. I call her dense because she can’t think for herself. Someone has to feed her the thought for the day or she is lost.

I guess I missed your admonitions of “HLP’s” repeated references to Michelle Obaba’s ass.

You sure gave him a piece of your mind, I’m sure.

I tend to agree with you vis a vis Jenny Sanford. (Except, perhaps, for the utter failure of judgment she demonstrated by marrying that whiny, philandering, holier-than-thou hypocrite.)

Still, I don’t care who Newtie was boinking as he was impeaching President Clinton. Rudy can sleep on his gay friends’ couch through another three divorces and marriages as far as I’m concerned. And there’s something downright populist about Larry Craig looking for anonymous gay sex in a public restroom.

I post my share of snark in this forum, “okobserver,” but even a blind pig finds an acorn every once in a while. I’ve come to discover when I present what I consider “substance,” and no CON can refute it, you frequently chime in with CONdescension and/or CONdemnation.

One could not find a more perfect example of what Freud called projection.

  32. CapnAmerica
    Posted June 27, 2009 at 10:05 pm | Permalink

    From Wiki:

Psychological projection (or projection bias) is when a person’s personal attributes, thoughts, and/or emotions are ascribed onto another person or people.

In classical psychology, projection is seen as a defense mechanism which occurs when a person’s own unacceptable or threatening feelings are repressed and then attributed to someone else.

An example of this behavior might be blaming another for one’s own failure. The mind may avoid the discomfort of consciously admitting personal faults by keeping those feelings unconscious, and redirect their libidinal satisfaction by attaching, or “projecting,” those same faults onto another.

Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

The theory was developed by Sigmund Freud and further refined by his daughter Anna Freud; for this reason, it is sometimes referred to as “Freudian Projection”

Capn with your psychobabble you must have missed the post dear Linda posted to me calling me hateful and mean. This was just a post back done in jest to a point.

I do however think she has no common sense. Women whether liberals or conservatives should be respected unless they are completely out of line as the ‘caliente’ babe who was dating a married man.

Even Joy Behar defended Palin against Lettermans ‘joke’ and she is certainly no conservative. Linda needs to know when to take the liberal chain off and think for herself.
