Sanford’s star dips

sanfordmarkAt least South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford doesn’t have to wonder whether anyone would miss him if he disappeared. But doesn’t his six-day AWOL episode — and the confusing revelation that he wasn’t really hiking along the Appalachian Trail, as his staff initially said, but in Argentina “to do something exotic” — damage his GOP star power and chances to be the 2012 presidential nominee? UPDATE: The governor admitted he was in Argentina having an affair. Definitely not a good career move.

Sanford’s press conference is at 1 pm.

    Can’t believe he’ll say anything.

But there are so many screwy aspects if this, the most Repubic Party-controlled state in the Union, where the Governor — a bright spot always mentioned among potential GOP presidential contenders — is bathsit insane!

There are so many funny details along the time-line of this story. The Appalachian Trail, “Nude Hiking Day” (!), away from his four boys on Father’s Day (”Mom, you’re on your own explaining why I’m not here.” — Awkward!), his staff’s “We’ve talked to him…” lies, the “coastline” of Buenos Aires.

And the red meat to-the-bone issue is how did someone like this become presidential timber in the eyes of CONs?!

They’re pretty good at dodging the CON idiocy of Limbaugh with, “He’s just an entertainer.” But Sanford was one of your rising stars, the future of the Repubic Party.

And he loses a legisltative issues and flies to his South American hidey-hole, abandons his family and constituents, leave those closest to him to spin lies that he’s not coo-coo (Cocoa Puffs optional).

Glad he’s on your side, CONs.

He’s one of your sanest representatives.

It’s consequential Monkey, only to Gov Sanford, who has to answer for his own decisions. I wasn’t familiar with him other than to know that he told the administration to keep the stimulus money, that his state didn’t want it. Maybe he was a rising star before. Maybe now he’s not. Time will tell.

    Why Mark Sanford Matters
Reihan Salam, 03.16.09, 12:00 AM EDT
    Forbes.com

“Whatever else Sanford has done, he has given conservatives a rare opportunity to return to their roots and to shake off the contradictions and compromises that have built up over the past 30 years.”

Contradictions and compromises are the core of the GOP value system. Say one thing/do the other = contradictions: Break your wife’s heart/solicit gay encounters in airports = compromises.

He’s not the first or the last politician to have an affair.
The distraction of the scandal keeps him from fulfilling his job.
What’s especially hanus in this case is he was AWOL for a number of days.
As a elected official you’re on the clock 24/7. I understand vacations and I understand date nights to New York. You’re available to do your job and make decisions if need be.
Being out of contact with your staff and unavailable in an emergency is completely inappropriate whatever the reason.
If he doesn’t step down he needs to be removed by whatever means are in place in that state.

As an S.C. resident, I can assure you that Sanford was never a rising star. Before this happened, he could never have become the GOP presidential nominee for 2012 because his track record as governor is abysmal and would not have stood up to national scrutiny.

He’s a lousy politician incapable of budging on his wacked-out principles. This year’s highly visible stimulus fight was but the latest example of his self-defeating stubborn refusal to brook any reform idea that doesn’t emanate from his playbook, which has been incapable of attracting legislative support since he took office in 2003.

Now we learn he’s also an elected official from the Eliot Spitzer school of public affairs (pun intended): so arrogant and narcissistic that he believed he could get away with an unannounced trip to Argentina to be with his lover, while suiting his staff up (apparently) to lie about his whereabouts. Sad and pathetic.

This is another David Brock moment for CONs.

A certain number of bright, well-intentioned, legitimate conservatives get sucked into the GOP/CON toilet swirl and come clean.

All those “family values” were political points, not life matters.

“The sanctity of marriage” is a rhetorical device, not anything you’d really believe in.

As much as WE Blog CONs attempt to dismiss the fall of Mark Sanford, he was a significant player in Repubic Party structure, operation, and message.

He campaigned as Father of the Year but skipped town on Father’s Day weekend to boink his Argentinian concubine.

I’ve had the Fakes Noise Channel playing in the background for awhile and even even its pus-dripping nut-sucking wing-nut talking heads are subdued.

Florida U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney: admitted he had an affair with an aide and it is reported paid her $121,000 to keep her quiet and avoid a sexual harassment lawsuit.

Neil Goldschmidt: Oregon governor. Admitted to having an illegal sexual relationship with a 14-year-old teenager while he was serving as Mayor of Portland.

Gerry Eastman Studds – U.S. Representative from Massachusetts from 1973 to 1997. The first openly gay member of Congress. Censured by the House of Representatives for having sexual relations with a teenage House page.

Rep. Mel Reynolds: of Illinois was convicted in 1995 of sexual assault against a 16-year-old girl- sentenced to five years in prison. President Bill Clinton pardoned him before leaving office.

Yes people are human. It’s not unreasonable to expect or demand monogomy in an intimate relationship, especially marriage.
Some people are going to live up to it. Some aren’t. Doesn’t matter what your political affiliation is.
People in power making the decisions that affect the lives of so many people do need to be held to a higher standard. That kind of power comes with priviledge and that priviledge demands a higher level of personal accountability.

    B. Swim to shore without trying to get your wife and grand kids, realize they didn’t make it, go back and save them?

Actually, he was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

In Massachusetts where the crime occurred, these are the consequences.

Leaving the Scene of Personal Injury Resulting in Death

Again, this crime has similar elements to the two crimes referenced above. The significant difference is that that accident her results in the death of another person and that the defendant must have left the scene in order “to avoid prosecution or evade apprehension”. This is a felony. Massachusetts district courts do not have jurisdiction over this crime.

    Penalty:
    Fine of $1,000 to $5,000
State prison sentence of 2 ½ to 10 years or jail for 1 to 2 ½ years There is a minimum mandatory 1 year sentence that must be served

    ———————

    Not that far fetched, lol.

Thing is, the GOP has backed itself so far and so completely into the South that they’ll have to nominate a non-Southerner to win 270 electoral votes.

And the problem with that is that the GOP has backed itself so far and so completely into the South that its Southern wingnut base won’t vote for a Northerner, not after McCain.

The way the party’s going these days — SNAFU — that pretty much leaves Palin in 2012. So far, anyway.

I guess they can try to paint the Huckleberry as a moderate in the general. Of course, that will be after Huckleberry is forced to out-looney-tune Palin for the nomination in the GOP primary, and do it in as public venues as he can possibly appear in. I’m sure that will leave a mark. Or several.

I think they’re scrood unless they figure out a way to grow the tent north.

I wonder if anyone ever becomes a little “shocky” after a traumatic car crash?
    —————————–
Or panicky when they realize they can go to jail for drunk driving and vehicular homicide.

    DavidB,

Sure, I crashed my car into a brick wall lined ditch going 55mph. I was a bit disoriented at first as well.

If I had crashed a car off a bridge into water with a friend in the seat I wouldn’t have been so shocked that I assumed they got out alive and left.

    Would you?

Would you have left your wife, kids, father, mother, or friend in a car trapped under water because you assumed they got out alive?

    Maybe I would.

    Symptoms of acute stress reaction

The symptoms show great variation but typically they include an initial state of “daze”, with some constriction of the field of consciousness and narrowing of attention, inability to comprehend stimuli, and disorientation. This state may be followed either by further withdrawal from the surrounding situation (to the extent of a dissociative stupor), or by agitation and overeactivity. Autonomic signs of panic anxiety (tachycardia, sweating, flushing) are commonly present. The symptoms usually appear within minutes of the impact of the stressful stimulus or event, and disappear within 2-3 days (often within hours). Partial or complete amnesia for the episode may be present.

That was some mondo bizarro confession Sanford put on.

I think it was a very public love letter to Maria. Nothing else makes sense.
