May Sen. Franken take his seat now?

franken2Even though it’s been an appalling seven months since Election Day, it still may take those of a certain age some time to adjust to the idea of Al Franken — of Stuart Smalley and the “Al Franken Decade” fame — as a member of the U.S. Senate. (Check out his Mick Jagger clip on YouTube.) Today’s Minnesota Supreme Court ruling certainly seems to make the career change official, though, unless incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman has more legal options up his sleeve.

If Minnesota Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty proves to be a man of his word, it is finished (finally!) since he has said he will certify the election winner based on what the state court decides.

    Yeeeeessssssss!

60 votes, a filibuster-proof majority. Now if only the Dems could get enough control of their mob to take advantage of it.

I look for Coleman to take this clear to the Supreme Court.

I look for it to be a long time before the Supreme Court meddles in another election. And if Governor Pawlenty certified Senator Franken he will be seated and begin serving.

Cool. Seat him. Now they haven’t even got the excuse that they can’t get anything passed because of the mean ol’ Republicans in the Senate.

It is important for elections to be administered as close to the law and as devoid of bias as possible. Therefore it is incumbent upon all of us to allow for challenges from time to time on close elections.

Enough justices have looked at this election to determine who the winner should be by now. It is plausible to consent now that Franken should be seated. It is impossible to have determined this a priori before hand simply because you favored one particular candidate over the other.

However, it is important to note that if Franken had come up 225 votes short, he would have and should have challenged the results. Such practice is in the ultimate best interest of all the voters.

Al Franken and Ben Stein used to make appearances together where each would good naturedly try to stump the other. It would take forever before one of them came up with a question the other couldn’t answer, and these questions would have made your average Jeopardy contestent turn pale.

Al Franken could have been a substitute host for “Win Ben Stein’s Money”. He is a very, VERY bright guy.
