With the state’s university system facing a repair backlog and dollars limited, it seemed worth a try in 2007 for the Legislature to offer tax credits to those wishing to donate money for campus repairs. But in the tax credit’s first year, it generated $862,000 — nice but not enough to address a list of $825 million in projects. The problem is the economy, but it’s also the idea of contributing toward repairs. “It’s hard to make a tax credit for a boiler,” state Sen. Laura Kelly, D-Topeka, said at a recent meeting of the Joint Committee on State Building Construction. Other funding sources, including bonding, have enabled the universities to do $26.2 million in deferred maintenance, according to the Lawrence Journal-World.

Let us all join hands and cry for the wealthy college professors and administrators and our state colleges. We will not talk about the millions donated by alumni for other purposes, now will we investigate the huge profits the male athletic students reap for the system.
Can’t consider those precious dollars.
And let’s be real stupid and consider “repairs” as the same thing as “$825 million in projects”.
We must cry for “more” free money.
And bottom line: Isn’t it a shame private donors don’t feel sorry for us – so we must get these “repairs” done with more taxpayer dollars?

For once, I agree with Amway and Regular. State universities have been awash in money for things they want but when it comes to the actual buildings falling down around their ears, they feel the need to to go begging.
Has it never occurred to anyone with a half brain cell to stop hiring all for all those athletic positions at multi-million dollar contracts and start taking care of their buildings?
Using the athletic departments profits to better the Universities seems a no brainer, or the profits from licensing and merchandise.

Can one of the newspapers left in the state, which might still have a real investigative reporter – investigate and provide us a list of the $825 million dollars of projects?
You want us to form a mind picture of leaking pipes, crumbling buildings, and broken chairs.
Doesn’t anyone ever ask what repairs require almost a billion dollars?
And shouldn’t someone be FIRED, for not taking care of the public property? Management should be budgeting annually for basic infrastructure maintenance.
Once we see the list – how did it get allowed to fall into such bad shape?
Good stewards of the taxpayers money? NOT
