Brownback added reparations disclaimer

brownback5Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., has received praise for his leadership in persuading the Senate to pass a resolution June 18 that formally apologizes for slavery and Jim Crow laws. But the Web site Politico reports that Brownback also was responsible for inserting language in the Senate version that has angered some members of the Congressional Black Caucus — by stipulating that the resolution does not authorize reparations for descendants of slaves — and derailed hopes of reconciling the two chambers’ resolutions so a joint ceremony could be held. The House passed its version last summer. “I wish we could have had my version passed in the Senate, but it’s still a historic achievement,” said Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., who has been pursuing a compromise.

My Great-great-great Grandfather in the Union Army was killed in the Civil War fighting to free the slaves.

I want reparations for his death.

Anyone who does NOT have your hand-out for free siht, please raise your hand!

Not ever black descendant in this country would qualify I wouldn’t think. There are those who arrived in this country after the Civil War and those in this country who were ‘Freemen’.

For sure, the majority of Blacks were/are descendants of slaves.

I’m unsure how you compensate people for this. For example, the Mexicans had their land taken away from them, used as poverty wage slaves and generally abused – which is still true today (last two parts.)

It’s a perplexing issue and I have this feeling that no amount of money is going to solve the problem.

Sort of like the Stimulus package…

I suspect even Black Americans recognize Sen. Brownback’s initiative to apologize for slavery and Jim Crow laws as pandering for support for his eventual run for national office.

Brownback’s record is short in so many areas, he has to stake out his political positions anywhere he sees an opening.

I have a fool-proof reparations plan. Each former slaveowner will deposit, say, one million dollars in a reparations fund. Then all former slaves will divide the pot equally. Problem solved.

    Uhhh…

A slight problem with that is that most slave owners lost everything after the Civil War. Plantations were bought up by Carpetbaggers.

Perhaps you were hoping that payback could be done in the worthless Confederate money?

Regular: Good point, not every black person in this country descends from slavery.

President Barack Obama is an excellent example. His father, Barack Obama Sr., came to the U.S., actually to Hawaii, in 1959 from Kenya, a very progressive country in sub-Sahara east Africa. He came to the U.S. to continue his education. eventually returning to Kenya where his life was cut short by an auto accident.

Barack Obama’s mother, S. Ann Dunham, was born in Wichita’s St. Francis Hospital, in November, 1941.

I wonder if the term “reparations” is being misunderstood, it may not be a matter of money but simply a sincere recognition of what Slavery and the blood, sweat and tears of those who were wronged. Meant to the building and success of this nation.

How to do that? Is a good question Slavery was recognized in the South as a means of economic empowerment. Instead of the use of machinery it was the uses of human beings as machinery.
Simply enough that without them the South and this nation would not have prospered. As wrong as it was it still was a major element of the country. Like it or not you are where you are and have what you have in part due to Slavery.

I say good on Brownback for this one. Is there anybody in this country who was a slave and still living? For African-Americans who demand reparations, give them exactly what was promised…40 acres and a mule.

It is greedy nonsense to be asking for money for something that has happen for nearly 150 years ago, there is nobody alive today suffering because of it.
And any suffering that they are having today is due to their own choices that they had made.
Proof of that is in how many are black and successful such as a black President or a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Most of the slave were sold into slavery by their own people; and all of them are dead; reparation is just more entitlement to buy Dimocrat votes

According to President Lincoln, the Civil War was reparation for the immoral institution of slavery, as every drop of blood drawn by the slavemaster’s lash was repaid by that drawn by the sword on both sides, to even God’s scales.
    . . .
The Democrats told us that slaves were not human before they were freed, just as they now tell us that our babies are not human before they are born.
    . . .
A hard question for today – what will be God’s reparation for the rivers of blood drawn by the abortionist’s knife?
We beg God’s mercy for our evil deeds.
    . . .
    Abolition now.

How could there even be reparations? The Democratics in charge have spent all of the money. And borrowed all the money. And printed all the money. And are getting ready to tax all the money.

And now China is calling for a new international monetary standard other than the dollar.

Even if reparations were due, the USA can’t afford reparations! Thank the Democratics in charge for that!

Oh wait, what the heck, the Obama Democratic economy is already in the tank, just print more money and raise taxes on 95% of the people.

The worst it can get is a full blown depression.

    Right, Democratics?
