Your Sunday morning cartoon –
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV7rtc9YURA&feature=related
Sorta like WE Blog.
When push comes to shove there is no “Democrat” or “Republican”. Ultimately, it’s the money.
We’re just sheep.
“XXX” –
No. When push comes to shove there are no “Ducks” nor “Wabbits.”
We’re just “Elmers.”
What do you hear when you turn on reich-wing radio?
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/05/01/severin_suspended_for_comments_about_mexican_immigrants/
Yeah, and they call Obama a fascist. Sounds like more projection from the conservatives. Their rhetoric doesn’t sound much different than it did in the 30s, just simply a different target.
Happy 90th birthday, Pete Seeger!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5KnYADCSms
There may have never been a better American.
Moneyhawk: Pete has a message on his banjo soundingboard. “This instrument surrounds hate and forces it to surrender”. Methinks Pete didn’t make enough personal appearances. I wasn’t aware he was still alive, but it makes me feel good to know that the good, real good, don’t die young.
Jack Kemp died to-day, one of the classier acts the Republicans ever had. He probably did more good for the Dole-Kemp ticket than Dole did.
“sursum” –
Woody Guthrie’s guitar had this written on the back of his guitar:
“This machine kills fascists.”
Would that we could have another 90 years of Pete Seeger.
Redundancy is sometimes necessary.
Oops.
Warren Buffet said in Ohama yesterday that Obama was on the right track and should be given the benefit of doubt for he inherited messes that were just allowed to simmer. That ole’ socialist…
There is no “right” or “wrong”, no “good” or “evil”.
There’s only profit and the motivation thereof.
Pass the Pablum, please.
“I know a thing or two about handling taxpayer dollars. I was the state treasurer in Kansas for six years before I came to Congress, and before that I practiced public accounting as a certified public accountant for nearly two decades so trust me when I say Washington’s books are a mess.” Rep Jenkins, from the Republican address.
She should know about mishandling of funds, she did her share:
http://mediamattersaction.org/items/200905010006
Then again, this is the same Republican who promised to forgo any earmarks then happily took as many as she could.
“Maggotpunk” –
Yeah.
Lynn Jenkins apparently didn’t have time to mention as state treasurer of Kansas she misallocated $15 million in taxpayer money AND played hooky as a trustee of a public retirement fund as it lost over $1 billion for Kansas workers.
This is a minor consideration in the utter collapse of the Republic Party. If Lynn Jenkins, of all people, is considered a viable spokesperson for the CONs, they’re so far out of touch with reality nothing can save them.
A three-month freshman congresscritter from the reddest state in the nation? Whose record cannot possibly back up her campaign rhetoric nor her voting record so far. Not what she promised (earmarks); not what she said she’d stand for (bipartisanship).
Bring her on, CONs.
If she is a rising star the the Republic Party’s 2010 national convention can be held in a back booth of the turnpike Hardee’s near Towanda.
Question:
Who is best situated to survive what’s coming?
Answer:
Those who have nothing to lose.
Good morning Kansas!
The record temperatures of Wichita for this date:

30 °F (1907)
On this date in History:
May 3rd 1802 Washington DC incorporates as a city
May 3rd 1963 Martin Luther King Jr delivers his “I have a dream” speech
“If she is a rising star the the Republic Party’s 2010 national convention can be held in a back booth of the turnpike Hardee’s near Towanda.”
Actually, that’s been a McDonald’s for a long time now.
I’ve often wondered what fascinated me about these blogs. While driving yesterday, I had an insight. How similar blogs are to bars, I thought — the same seedy characters, the same braggadocio and lies, the same potty mouth. Except for me of course. Though I love bars, I never have more than two drinks; three tops.
Monk, Sursum,
A few years ago we attended The Woody Guthry Festival at Okemah. Pete and Arlo got up on the stage toward the end of the evening, and I have never seen a performer grab an audience quite so quickly as Pete did! They were all in the palm of his hand in less than 5 seconds. Happy Birthday, Pete, and many happy returns!
When I was a kid my Mom bought a bunch of old 78rpm records (because there was an old 78rpm player in the basement) and a bunch of ‘em were Pete Seeger recordings.
What I remember from those long-lost 78s is Seeger loved the banjo, loved that it was American, loved American songs, and made me feel proud to be a member of his tribe.
I later learned about the Black List and the Commie Scare and how much Pete went through simply because he loved America so much.
I hope some people clicked the link I posted above. I wish baseball games began with “This Land is Your Land.”
Monk,
My introduction wasn’t until high school, when an English teacher played the forbidden Weavers in class- a fairly risky thing to do back then.
Of course I was already listening to Paul Robeson, Burl Ives, Susan Reed and Josh White, so it didn’t find it all that subversive.
CUTE!
AND a good representation of the current situation and attitude of con America.

I think you’re onto something there, beber.
Unfortunately real pubs don’t exist anymore*. Even taverns/bars that are pub-like tend to have smoky interiors, uncomfortable seating, overpriced drinks, and the very best smell like a cat-box if you’re anywhere around the john.
When I was younger, I could have cared less. Now, though, I prefer to bring home a good bottle of whatever, entice friends over, and enjoy what passes for modern pub life listening to my own music and sitting in very comfortable (and clean) surroundings.
WEBlog simulates some aspects of the old, wild conversations we used to have in taverns and bars — replete with braggadocio, posturing, no-goods, know-everythings, people who were actually jewels among us, and all the usual hangers-on. The only thing that’s missing is the women, the fistfights, and the puking, lol. Oh, it’s now impossible to make real contact with strangers in bars, or to keep friendships alive there.
*–The best two examples of real Kansas pubs that I know of are (1) the Ol Stuga in Lindsborg, which still exists, and (2) the old Warren Lounge in McPherson (the best bar I ever hung out in, hands down; it went belly up around 1977 or so). These bars had real characters in ‘em, characters that bestselling novels could be written about, real humor, real stories (the Ol Stuga still has its moments, but they’re very rare). They’re a thing of the past, unfortunately.
I like the Goose in Topeka on Tenth Avenue. I seldom have to sit long without conversation. It has its own flavor. The most common phrase is the triumphant — “I didn’t get no jail time.”

————————-
Used to have some old 78s of ‘Big Bands’ and an ‘Al Jolson’ 78.
My mother hired a friend as a housekeeper, because they were in desperate straits financially. Even though at the time, we couldn’t afford it.
The housekeeper’s was a mother to a friend of my, same age and we attended the same church. She had been diagnosed with brain tumor and died about two months later.
The 78s, a coin and stamp collection had disappeared from my room and I asked my mother about it. She said that the housekeeper wasn’t thinking properly and had thrown them in the trash (due to her brain tumor.)
Years later, the family had moved away, but my friend who was my age came back for a visit. He said they had some really hard times and had to sell some of his gifts from his mother, like his coin collection and 78’s of ‘Big Bands’ so they could eat.
I raised my eyebrows, bit my tongue and thought about it. At least, it went for a good cause and let it go.
I think of my old friend every time I listen to ‘Big Band’ music and wonder how he’s doing. The requisition of my personal collection was a reminder of how to be thoughtful when others are in dire straits.
My mother knew the real story, although I never asked her I could tell by her tone when she told me – one of empathy and compassion. I always admired my mother for her wisdom and her understanding of compassion.

Nathaniel,
Instead of posting snarks, and reversing my posts, why don’t you show us why the AGW theory invalid?
Explain why the worldwide scientific consensus is wrong.
‘There is no consensus‘
http://www.skepticalscience.com/global-warming-scientific-consensus.htm
I like this definition of ‘consensus’ as applied to the ‘Warmers.’
group solidarity in sentiment and belief
Cosmos,
Instead of posting snarks, making strawman arguments, and attacking me personally, why don’t you answer simple questions about AGW?
“Oh well, I’m movin’ on up….to the East side..
To a (semi)deluxe apartment – in the sky-hy-hy…
I’m moving on up…..
to the East side…..
I’ve finally got a piece of the pie…….”
Okay – so I’ve b–tardized the “Jeffersons” theme song – but so what? Big Bertha’s finally leaving the sordid side of (midtown) life – and I can’t f–cking wait.
Three years ago next month, a big ugly hermaphrodite of a local policewoman (at least I think it was a woman – but I can’t be sure) cruelly accused me of bein’ a streetwalkin’ ho’ – just ’cause I was walking near 13th and Waco. I didn’t have a car then – and I needed a very vital prescription – and the buses weren’t runnin’ that day – and I needed that scrip – in a big frigging hurry.
“Don’t you know this is prostitution alley?” the gender assassin bellowed. “No, I did not,” I snarled.
Well, in two weeks I’m leaving this hellho’ of a neighborhood – with its huge nightly crowds of the crack-infested and unruly – and I’m moving to a more genteel enclave. And I’m real, real happy about it, too. I’m workin’ two jobs and I’m still adjusting my body clock to these new hours – and I’m really sick and f–king fed up with observing a scene from “Cops” darned near every night.
I also won’t miss the gaggle of gay-dewdes who live smack-bottom-dap next door to me. Their insipid habit of blaring real loud music at 3:00 a.m. just about slays my last nerve. Two nights ago, after my angry remonstration, one prettyboy mewled, “Oh! I didn’t know I had the music up that loud!”
“Oh, do you have a pr–k up your ears?” I demanded without a shred of political correctness.
I can’t imagine my 10-years-younger self belching something like that. But that was then and this is now and I need all the beauty sleep I can get so’s I don’t end up looking like Boy George’s great-grandmother.
That, in my view, is my idea of extenuating circumstances…..

Nathaniel,
Did you form your opinion that the AGW theory was invalid, and the worldwide scientific consensus is wrong, after carefully researching the issue?
If you carefully researched the issue, why do you need me to answer “simple questions”?
Why can’t Nathaniel explain why the worldwide scientific consensus is wrong, without my help?

“And from that union there came three,
A porgy and a porpoise and the other was me!

Oh for a night on the rooolling sea!”
My earliest memory is of listening to an album entitled “A Ballad for Americans” by Paul Robeson, on my dad’s old Stromberg-Carlson phonograph. I wish I still had those records!

With the majority of the state in the red, why is it so many kids go without being adopted? People like nathaniel must be too busy securing his guns to explore this, but, in my heart, i know he will have a house full of kids in no time and be able to walk the walk.
Nathan,
Do I have to call your father and have him paddle your behind?
Congratulations FilmFan on youir move!!!1 It’s always nice to hear “a little good news today”
Jed,
Nathaniel is just trying to represent a typical mid-30’s Kansas Republican Christian Marine. He proudly represents all of them.
Cos,
Yeah, that’s what worries me.
Now we may put to rest the lie about former vice-president Al Gore personally profiting from his environmental work.
From an April 24 Capitol Hill hearing:
REP. MARSHA BLACKBURN (R-TN): So you’re a partner in Kleiner Perkins. OK. Now, they have invested about a billion dollars in 40 companies that are going to benefit from cap-and-trade legislation. So is the legislation that we are discussing here today, is that something that you are going to personally benefit from?
GORE: I believe that the transition to a green economy is good for our economy and good for all of us, and I have invested in it. But every penny that I have made, I have put right into a nonprofit, the Alliance for Climate Protection, to spread awareness of why we have to take on this challenge.
And Congresswoman, if you’re — if you believe that the reason I have been working on this issue for 30 years is because of greed, you don’t know me.
BLACKBURN: Sir, I’m not making accusations, I’m asking questions that have been asked of me and individuals — constituents that were seeking a point of clarity, so I am asking you for that point of — point of clarity.
GORE: I understand exactly what you’re doing, Congresswoman. Everybody here does.
BLACKBURN: And, well — you know, are you willing to divest yourself of any profit? Does all of it go to a not-for-profit that is an educational not-for-profit –
GORE: Every penny that I have made –
BLACKBURN: Every penny –
GORE: — has gone to it. Every penny from the movie, from the book, from any investments in renewable energy. I’ve been willing to put my money where my mouth is. Do you think there’s something wrong with being active in business in this country?
cosmos is not a Kansan.
Jed,
It doesn’t do any good to worry about it.
Besides, all the groups that Nathaniel represents believe in personal responsibility, so he personally accepts responsibility for his behaviour on this blog.

I’m just shocked that Blackburn was stupid or brave enough to ask the question… it’s hard to know which with that crowd. But since she did, now we have something on the record other than the scurrilous slanders and innuendo.
DavidB,
Yeah… ok… so he donates “some” of his money to that non-profit.
But not all of it, from all his profits off being the Grand High Priest of Global Warming doom:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=a7li9Nhmhvg0&refer=home
Gore Invests $35 Million for Hedge Funds With EBay Billionaire
“In the last personal finance report he filed as vice president, Gore disclosed on May 22, 2000, that the value of his assets totaled between $780,000 and $1.9 million. In addition, Gore listed an interest in his father’s estate that included Occidental Petroleum Corp. stock worth as much as $1 million.
He and Tipper Gore released tax returns for 1998 showing they earned $224,376 that year, less than half the income of President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, news reports at the time said.
Now Gore charges a $175,000 speaking fee and has a net worth “well in excess” of $100 million, including pre-public offering Google stock options, according to an article in Fastcompany.com last year. Kreider said the speaking fees vary and Gore doesn’t disclose them.”
He donates “every penny” to non-profit?
Yeah right.
98 million dollars since 2000 in net worth sure isn’t “every penny”
Nevermind that Gore is the Chair of the very non-profit that he claims to give “every penny” too.
LOL
What a great way to fund your own tax exempt directed propaganda machine where he can pay staff to help him and reimburse himself all his expenses.
Keep drinking the Kool-Aid David.
Gore’s family has always been rich, Nathan.
Not fithy stinking Limbaugh rich, but pretty rich.
So what?
Nathan is just jealous because Al Gore is rich and he isn’t.
LOL!
Nathaniel proves that he cannot read.
And Nathaniel seems to be upset that Al Gore is paid speaking fees on an issue that Nathaniel cannot refute.
Heh Nathaniel! Did you spit all over your computer screen when you typed “Grand High Priest of Global Warming doom”?
AGW deniers love to make silly, angry rants at Al Gore (and Dr. Hansen), instead of admitting that they cannot refute the worldwide scientific consensus.

Goodbye Jack Kemp, We harldy knew ye!
When being examined by a Senate panel for HUD (I think) one sentaor inferred that he might find disfavor with the black community, not an uncommon smear tactic used against Repubicans in those days, until another democratic member spoke up to say the Jack Kemp has showered with more blacks daily, than most members on the panel spoke to in a month. I like that story.
Gore the Multi-Millionaire
Financial disclosure documents released before the 2000 election put the Gore family’s net worth at $1 million to $2 million. After years of public service–and four kids needing high-priced educations–Al and Tipper used to fret occasionally about money. Not anymore. They have a new multimillion-dollar home in a tony section of Nashville and a family home in Virginia, and have recently bought a multimillion-dollar condo at the St. Regis condo/hotel in San Francisco. Available data indicate a net worth well in excess of $100 million.
March 6, 2008 – Bloomberg report that indicates that Al Gore invested $35 million of his own money in various for-profit endeavors.
Congressional testiomony:
Rep. Blackburn: So you’re a partner in Kleiner Perkins. OK. Now they have invested about a billion dollars in 40 companies that are going to benefit from cap-and-trade legislation. So is the legislation that we are discussing here today, is that something that you are going to personally benefit from?
Al Gore: I have invested in it.
Rep. Blackburn: I am simply asking for clarification on the relationship.
Al Gore: I’m proud of it. I’m proud of it.
Gore’s ‘carbon offsets’paid to firm he owns
It turns out he pays for his extra-large carbon footprint through Generation Investment Management, a London-based company with offices in Washington, D.C., for which he serves as chairman. The company was established to take financial advantage of new technologies and solutions related to combating “global warming,” Generation Investment Management’s U.S. branch is headed by a former Gore staffer and fund-raiser, Peter S. Knight, who once was the target of probes by the Federal Election Commission and the Department of Justice.
There is nothing left of the denial of science and human caused global warming but assorted cranks and crackpots.
I cite as example those such folks who post here. Not a ONE of them could be called rational or reasonable. They are as a tale told by an idiot.
Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Oh, so NOW, Repub Senators don’t want to see an ‘idelogue’ appointed to the S.C.! LOL

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama plans to roll out a set of proposals on international tax policies on Monday, in an announcement with potential implications for U.S. multinational firms.
The White House said Obama will be joined by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner for the 11:05 a.m. EDT (1505 GMT) event.
Obama’s budget outline released in February made reference to proposals to change the tax treatment of U.S. firms with overseas operations and measures to crack down on international tax evasion.
The White House said at the time the measures would bring in $210 billion in additional revenue over the next decade.
During his campaign last year, Obama spoke out against provisions in the tax code that allow U.S. firms with overseas operations to defer payment of taxes on corporate profits if they plowed the money back into their foreign subsidiaries.
Obama said this gave companies incentives to ship jobs overseas.

White House Denies Charge By Attorney that Administration Threatened to Destroy Investment Firm’s Reputation*
May 02, 2009 3:17 PM
A leading bankruptcy attorney representing hedge funds and money managers told ABC News Saturday that Steve Rattner, the leader of the Obama administration’s Auto Industry Task Force, threatened one of the firms, an investment bank, that if it continued to oppose the administration’s Chrysler bankruptcy plan, the White House would use the White House press corps to destroy its reputation.

No, not jealous at all…
Even if I had 100 million dollars, I doubt I would radically change my life style. I have no fondness of perks and fancy things.
I imagine Gore’s speaking fees were much like Clinton’s. Way too high for what was said. It’s legal, sure, but leaves a bad smell in the way corporation use ’speaking fees’ to make millionaires out of ex-politicians.

So you afraid to debate me then?
I understand, public speaking is ranked high amongst personal fears. Especially if the person is lacking in background knowledge. :)

Because you addressed it to me?
LOL!
DFB did that.

Regular – guess who Gore’s partner is in “GIM”?
“Because you addressed it to me?”
No, dufus, it was addressed to BFD, SHE referenced you in her post – NOW, who needs an eye examine?

Regular – guess who Gore’s partner is in “GIM”? Hank Paulson & Goldman Sachs (yeah the same GS that Buffet dumped $5B into last fall…). Small world, eh.
Regular,
Since you enjoy public speaking, you should ask soldevvb to fly to Wichita, so the two of you can make AGW denial presentations. You might even be able to charge speaking fees.

He brought up a different fact than I did.
How was I supposed to provide a link to something I did submit?
Just because I put a name in the post, doesn’t mean all references and all known links can be put back on me.
Just admit you made a mistake, it’s easy.

Two speakers on the same side debating would be rather boring.
I still see that cosmos is afraid to come to Wichita, Kansas to debate.
I understand his fear, if I was him, I would be afraid as well – you know due to his political spin on science and inability to deal with scientific questions directly.
So for cosmos, he will get no glory, because he has no guts. :)

Huh? WTF are you talking about?
BFD made a comment directed to YOU –

And I responded to it – what “mistake” am I supposed to admit to?
Damn………………
Read the freakin’ post – it was just that your nic was mentioned in the post -EVERYTHING is not about you Regular……..
Unless, of course, YOU are BFD/DFB………..
The glory is in scientific methodology.
WSClark,
Regular is just a professional troll.
cosmos is afraid to meet me in public debate on Climate Change.
The debate is over.
The current debate is scientific consensus, versus lies from people like Monckton.
CULTURE OF CORRUPTION CONTINUES…..
Feds Investigating John Edwards’ Use of Campaign Funds
A federal investigation is under way into whether funds from John Edwards’ presidential campaign were used inappropriately, the former North Carolina senator acknowledged Sunday.
RALEIGH, N.C. — Failed presidential candidate John Edwards, whose political action committee paid more than $100,000 to his mistress’ company, acknowledged Sunday that federal investigators were looking into how he handled his campaign funds.
But the former North Carolina senator said he was confident no money was used improperly.

Darn right the money wasn’t used improperly. That Sl ut was worth every penny of that $100,000!!!!!!
Regular is afraid of climate science, and reality.

The debate is over.
———————-
On to another topic then, the Qu eer has decreed the debate is over, so it must be over.
What will Obama do?
Will he risk a pre-emptive war that might be politically unpopular to ensure that Pakistan’s nukes do not fall into Taliban hands?
Or will Obama just wait for NYC or San Francisco to be nuked first?
A reactionary war is always popular, just look at what choice FDR made.
Course, 10 million in NYC or San Francisco would die, in the latest version of Pearl Harbor.
Who cares?

Pakistan’s Nuclear Arms Feared at Risk From Fighting
Published: May 3, 2009
WASHINGTON — As the insurgency of the Taliban and Al Qaeda spreads in Pakistan, senior American officials say they are increasingly concerned about new vulnerabilities for Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, including the potential for militants to snatch a weapon in transport or to insert sympathizers into laboratories or fuel-production facilities.
Another part of global warming theory ‘topples’
The debate is not over

The fragile and tentative nature of climate science is once again on display, this time via “new data of novel high precision”, obtained by glacier researchers in New Zealand, utilizing radioactive isotopes in studying behavior of a glacier in that country. The New Zealand Herald reports
The first direct confirmation of differences in glacier behaviour between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, the new work topples theories based on climate in the Northern Hemisphere changing in tandem with the climate in the Southern Hemisphere.
The research argues that at times the climate in both hemispheres evolved in sync and at other times it evolved differently in different parts of the world. …
The paper published in Science magazine yesterday showed the Mt Cook glaciers advanced to their maximum length 6500 years ago, and have been smaller ever since.
But glaciers in the Swiss Alps advanced to their maximum only in the past 700 years – during the Northern Hemisphere’s “Little Ice Age”, which ended about 1860.
During some warm periods in Europe, glaciers were advancing in New Zealand. At other times, glaciers were well advanced in both areas.
In a commentary which accompanied the research, Greg Balco, from the Berkeley Geochronology Centre in California, said the conclusion that glacier advances in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres were not synchronised was “unexpected”.
When data are unexpected, they reveal flaws in the models being used by scientists. The models touted by Al Gore, the investor betting big bucks on carbon regulation and trading, don’t begin to capture the complexity of global climate.
If Obama doesn’t act to keep Pakistan’s nukes out of Talibans hands, then he will have given WMD’s to the Taliban through his incompetence.
What a bafoon.
I bet he proves himself to be a bafoon.
But who cares, Kansas won’t be a nuke target.
How would the Taliban deliver a nuke to the US?
Oh no, not by ICBM.
By boat, then truck.
The same way millions of tons of illegal drugs enter the US.
No need to seal our borders though.
You might pi ss off Mexico.
WASHINGTON – Wall Street is not going to play as dominant a role in the economy as regulations reduce “some of the massive leveraging and the massive risk-taking that had become so common,” President Barack Obama says.
The changes in the role of Wall Street and the huge profits that came from that risk-taking could mean other adjustments as well, Obama said in an interview in this week’s New York Times Magazine.

Here dumfuq. This would be the original DFB post from 6:56 p.m.
Stop whining, Regular. You lose this one.
I had hoped things had changed here after all this time, but I see that stupid still hasnt been fixed yet.
Bye Blog!
Kentucky Derby weekend……. BDP Stakes…..
And they are off. Fleetwood takes the initial lead, while JimJohnson, Box and Regular follow the pack. OK/KSGrm, has veered off the track and no one has a clue where she’s going. BFD has dropped off the pace and Nathan is coming on. Regular is making a strong (ha!) move and Boxie is right behind.
As they approach the turn towards home, OK/KSGrm and BFD are nowhere to be seen, and Fleet is fading fast. Regular looks to take the lead, but Nathan is right on him. Boxie is fading quickly, while JimJohnson is looking for the lead.
Nathan is falling back with Regular, but JimJohnson has assumed the lead with just a quarter to go – Nathan is making his bid, while Fleet fades to the fourth position – is in JJ in the lead, Box makes a move on the rail, but Nathan cuts him off – it might be a photo finish folks!
And the results are in – JimJohnson wins the BDP Stakes, Nathan is in second and Box is in third, Regular falls to fourth and Fleet is fifth.
BFD and OK/KSGrm fail to finish.
It’s all over folks! JimJohnson is this year’s BDP!!!!!!
It’s your lie Chas, grow it like you want. :D
The CONs are just jealous that Al Gore is rich.
Why is it okay for Limbaugh to make a quarter BILLION dollars flapping his gums, but not for Al Gore to make one one-hundredth of that by smart investing in green energy?
Get over it.
CapnAmerica,
Al Gore’s profits from investing into green energy went to educational not-for-profits.
