Federal immigration agents and Wichita police officers this week arrested 17 gang members and associates with criminal histories who are in the U.S. illegally.
The arrests were made Wednesday and are part of an ongoing national initiative of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to target violent, transnational gang members and associates.
In the initiative, “Operation Community Shield,” ICE works with local law enforcement agencies to identify the gang members.
All of the arrests in the Wichita area were of Mexican men — most in their early 20s — who are in the United States illegally, authorities said. All are members or associates of local Hispanic gangs, they said, and all have criminal histories, which include involuntary manslaughter, assault, burglary and unlawful possession of drugs and firearms.

Cosmos – Just curious if you’ve seen any studies on GW related to methane. According to the EPA, it’s 21 times more potent than C02, and I’ve heard/read some about animal generated methane “emissions”, and obviously there’s decomposition related methane releases, but just curious if you’ve stumbled across any studies involving other large sources of methane emission relative to global temp trends. I’ve attached the EPA link, that shows methane ppm in the atmosphere flattening out since roughly ‘99, which coincidently, some claim the global temp’s been cooling since ‘98. Just curious if you’re aware of any studies done researching this link. Cosmos – when I click on the chapters of your link, I just get a blank screen. This is why I ask about methane. Much has been made about methane emissions from animals, swamp gas, decaying landfills, coal mines, etc. But what I haven’t heard or read anything about, was the shift in the 90’s of foreign countries who previously had no local market for nat gas, to exporting nat gas in the form of methanol, nitrogen fertilizer (ammonia, urea & UAN)and plastic feedstocks. LNG transporting technology/demand also kicked into overdrive in the late 90’s as nat gas prices hit $10/mmbtu for the first time, thanks to Enron. I just find it interesting that at the same time as foreign countries figured out how to export methane in various forms, vs previously just venting it to atmosphere at oil wellheads after the separator, that the global temperature has slightly cooled at the same time. Is there something in the IPCC report regarding foreign country’s exporting of methane vs venting it? As an example, China used to be the world’s largest importer of nitrogen fertilizer, but over the past 10 years has reversed the trend to become the world’s largest exporter. Some of the fertilizer/methanol market is due to new nat gas production (Trinidad/Tobago is a prime example), but much of it is simply due to finding a market for it that doesn’t exist locally, as in Venz, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, etc.

Cos – read the methane sections of IPCC…and as I expected, didn’t see a word about a decrease in methane emissions from sources that had previously vented to atomosphere, but were now capturing and processing the methane. They strictly spoke of wetlands, rice production and forest burning. Seems odd to me that they’d leave out as big a variable as this, not to mention that virtually ever landfill now has some form of methane capture system.
