If you’d slap your father, you likely are a liberal

slapface“If you want to tell whether someone is conservative or liberal, what are a couple of completely nonpolitical questions that will give a good clue?” Nicholas Kristof wrote. “How’s this: Would you be willing to slap your father in the face, with his permission, as part of a comedy skit? And, second: Does it disgust you to touch the faucet in a public restroom? Studies suggest that conservatives are more often distressed by actions that seem disrespectful of authority, such as slapping Dad. Liberals don’t worry as long as Dad has given permission. Likewise, conservatives are more likely than liberals to sense contamination or perceive disgust.”
According to Kristof, “the upshot is that liberals and conservatives don’t just think differently, they also feel differently.”

After the last couple of election cycles a better indicator is conservatives are the ones with quivering lip syndrome and more likely to attend a pity….er…I mean tea party.

Obviously you have not been to Zen Vegetarian Cuisine on north Rock. It is all vegitarian and most things have tofu (aka soy protein). It is delicious food.

(I am not affiliated with that restaurant or any other, I am just a fan)

Good job Phil! Your journalistic brilliance is underwhelming. You take an article (I’m so surprised it’s from the NYT, what did Media Matters not have anything partisan enough for you today?) that’s written to talk about being more open minded and empathetic to the “other side”…and manage to post only the insanely frivolous part.
Of course, since it’s from the NYT, the last paragraph is all that matters, Kristof couldn’t resist a little shameless “Hail Obama!”,
“A corollary is that the most potent way to win over opponents is to accept that they have legitimate concerns, for that triggers an instinct to reciprocate. As it happens, we have a brilliant exemplar of this style of rhetoric in politics right now — Barack Obama.”

That was an interesting post,Phillip. There are two theories about what make up conservatism: one is called authoritarianism and the other is social dominance theory. The surveys that measure these personality traits are independent, meaning uncorrelated. What Kristof is describing is more like authoritarianism – they value obedience to authority and tend to be more religiously oriented also. People high in social dominance see the world as a jungle where the biggest predator wins – they are generally not positively inclined toward religious belief.

It is also possible to be high on both authoritarianism and social dominance.

I would not only slap my father but I would punch him out if he were abusing my mother. I guess that is another difference between liberals and conservatives – a CON would figure he has the right to abuse her.

As for tofu I just find it incredibly bland.

But I’d be glad to slap a conservative if he gave me permission.

I don’t know if I could slap my dad though- at least not hard.

Conservative Dinner. Steak medium well – mashed potatoes – green beans and carrots – beer – bourbon or wine – apple pie –

Liberal Dinner. shrimp scampi and crab legs – broccoli and cauliflower – onion rings – margarita, martini or cosmopolitan, chocolate banana creme pie

Well Barnie and Pmom I am having a real identity crisis here. I would choose the liberal menu everytime. And I am a real germaphobe and actual wash the handle before washing my hands. Would never have slapped my dad or anyone else for that matter. Just not my style.

Beer for starters, steak medium rare, homemade steak fries, corn on the cob and beer for desert.

And I’ll cook the damned meal myself – you buy the steaks.

    Excellent.

The only thing I would change is the steak needs to be rare…

I’ll cook it myself and I fed it before it was a steak….I had beer while feeding it.

Steak, very rare, from the grill. Taters on the side and baked beans.

As for the topic; I’ll turn it around: How many of us would let our son’s slap us as part of a comedy skit? I’d have no problem with it.

I thought the favorite comedy skit for Conservatives are when men dress up as women – like Rudy Guiliani, isn’t it? Do they let their little boys dress up or is that something their offspring males have to ‘mature’ in to?

That’s really the test – how do Conservatives always manage to turn everything into something sexual?

Brownlee is certainly always good for a chuckle. I always like to check out his blog. I think he would have drawn more readers if the title would have been: If you’re a liberal, you will slap your father. Would have been just as misleading, but a little more controversial.

even the headline is b.s. misleading.
