Church protected abusers

priestabuseIt’s terrible enough that priests and nuns terrorized and abused thousands of boys and girls in Ireland, according to a commission report released Wednesday. But — as was the case with some of the sex-abuse scandals in the United States — the Catholic Church covered it up and, as a result, helped perpetuate it. The report concluded that church officials shielded their orders’ pedophiles from arrest to protect their own reputations, the Washington Post reported.

The Catholic Church also owned slaves in Ireland until the 1970s until it was exposed.

“In some schools a high level of ritualized beating was routine. … Girls were struck with implements designed to maximize pain and were struck on all parts of the body,” the report said. “Personal and family denigration was widespread.”

Ritualized child abuse, slavery, rape, thank goodness I wasn’t given a religious upbringing. No wonder so many fundies here approve of violence, murder and torture, they were taught such things from childhood.

The big split, I’ve observed, is this:

Liberals want schools that teach kids how to think.

CONs want schools to teach what to think.

    That’s called indoctrination.

That’s what brain-washing is all about.

The problem is fundamentalism; the cock-sure belief what you believe is God’s truth.

Fundamentalism can’t deal with ambiguity. Fundamentalism has no use for nuance.
    Fundamentalism cannot compromise.
Fundamentalism cannot live and let live.

There are fundamentalist evangelicals, fundamentalist Catholics, fundamentalist Jews, fundamentalist Muslims and arguably, fundamentalist atheists.

The Guardian and the NYT have been running stories of abuse by the Catholic hurch in priest ridden Ireland for the last few days, the comments are horrors to read. These guys also ran schools for native kids in Canada where they (brothers, sisters and priests) physicalyy and sexually abused kids for years. In Quebec, more priest ridden than Ireland, unwanted babies, orphans or “probem” kids were taken by the Church and classified as mentally defecient thus getting a higher per diem stipend from the government. Thousands of Quebecers to this day are still trying to get their lives back from their cash flow generated stigma.

    “ANTI” tries –

“The idea that all Christians beat and molest their kids…”

…is a classic CON straw man. (Check in with the virgin prophet “Nathaniel” on that one, “ANTI.” He hates those kinds of arguments.)

Of course there are some “christians” who don’t beat and molest kids. Dozens of ‘em, for all I know.

But the cold hard solid facts of the issue is some “christians” — many of them in authority — have, in fact, molested kids, done meth with gay hookers, boinked the church secretary, diddled around to get the preacher’s wife to blow him away with a shotgun….

And the only answer the “christians” have in response is along the lines of “Non-christians do it, TOO!”

    So…

    What’s the difference?

What’s the advantage of being a vociferous evangelical fundamentalist?

What makes the twice-born somehow role-models whose lives are somehow something others might aspire to?

For all I know, Pope Ratso hasn’t wanted to slaughter Jews since the Hitler Youth shut down.

On the basis of recent evidence, Jimmy Swaggart hasn’t checked into a roadside motel with a hooker since 1988.

David Koresh (despite evidence given from his victims) may or may not have known (in the Biblical sense) the daughters of his flock.

Polygamist sects of the Mormon Church sure have a solid basis for their beliefs in the Holy Scriptures.

    But no, “ANTI.”

Not ALL “christians beat and molest their kids.” I never said that. You lied when you alleged I did.

I’m used to you CONs’ tactics.

This is a particularly lame one. It never works. You CONs just seem to go back to it when you have nothing to defend your case.

Here’s an analogy to the Catholic Church scandal. Chevron Oil is facing a lawsuit due to it’s deeds in the Amazon and the massive pollution it’s claimed to have caused over a period of 23 years.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/05/01/60minutes/main4983549.shtml

The apologists here would say it’s not Chevron’s fault but the actions of a few individuals. Sure they were employees of Chevron, and the company stood by while the polluting occurred, but the company is not at fault.

Somehow if the company used that reasoning in court I doubt they’d be very successful.

Comprising less than 1 percent of the population, Homosexuals are responsible for a significant number of pedophile attacks on young males

32 percent of those child molestation cases involved homosexuals. Nearly a third of these cases come from only 1-2% of the population.

Judith Reisman, in her book, Kinsey, Crimes & Consequences describes the research done by Dr. Gene Abel. In a sample of 153 homosexual molesters, they confessed to a total of 22,981 molestations. This is equivalent to 150 children per molester.

This means that 40% of child molestations were by homosexuals. (Los Angeles Times)

Over a decade ago a story came on about the Gray Nuns and their abuse of orphans.
For the first time I learned of my dad’s deep and abiding hatred of Nuns.
Which taking into account most of the family is Catholics seemed odd to me.
He attended a Catholic school until High school, I had to ask him why he hated Nuns.

He told me of abuses and the ridged standards that there were no mercy shown or understanding for the situation. He admitted that things were not as sever as with the Gray Nuns, but he had no doubt considering what he was subject to and what he had saw. That it was true and that Nuns would be fully capable of such abuses.

So why now with this report? Darkness hates light, to keep such darkness hidden in darkness allows it to grow. Even if it is not continuing, to admit it did happen keeps it and other abuses from happening again.
Now, this report and what my dad endure is not the Catholic church as a whole. Churches are made of human beings and that is a species that can be prone to faults and evils by the individuals that make up a church. Nor is it the entire Christian faith, it should not be taken as such.

But not to worry: since they are the Church, they are the source of morality, so sit down and shut up. Blanket statements don’t work. Not allowing priests to marry doesn’t seem to work either. If Catholics would remove that ridiculous restraint, there may not be as many problems.

Nuns involved with children tend to be pretty harsh as well. Not all of them, but the ones I’ve run into proved that point.

For your incredibly stupid analogy to even approach relevance, there would have to be widespread allegations of misconduct within a single organization, say the Human Rights Campaign, and perhaps a reticence by Joe Solomonese to address them.

    Two comments:

    1) The Catholic Church, as an institution, has shown the continued regrettable tendancy to take whatever power they can get, and to protect the reputation of the institution first. The Catholic Church is not only a religion, it is an institution (and as such it is largely unique). The horrors described in Ireland were not that long ago, and the church continued to try to stonewall those horrors up until the present. In particular, they were determined to hide their culpability in terms of hiding not only pedophiles, but institutional abuse. One wonders what behavior is still justified under the umbrella of the church in places such as Poland and Brazil. It isn’t that the church doesn’t do considerable good as well, but Ratzinger and his ilk truly believe that the church should wield as much power and influence as they are allowed to in any given location, and their selfish pragmatism is underestimated at everyone’s peril.

    2) The grand old troll sites an article about the quack (and that’s putting it waaay too kindly) Judith Reisman. She has a Ph.D. in “Communications” and once wrote for Captain Kangaroo, and I am not sure how that qualifies her to be an expert in “erototoxins”. Her ability to describe the research of Gene Abel is, too put it way to kindly, laughable (btw, Abel did not say anything about 32 percent of child molestation cases involving homosexuals, in fact, that claim was at first reported to come from completely different sources, incorrectly sited by the nutjob Paul Cameron). Reisman just recycled it and claimed another source for it.

The Catholic Church is/was omnipotent in some places and nobody could get elected with a diminishing comment from the pulpit. If you were a leftist regime and did not give the Church it’s due, they worked against you with the full support of the US. If you were a rigthist regime and did not do the Church’s bidding they fomented “freedom fighters” or something called liberation theology. Do we recall the Vatican/Nazi non-interference pact engineered by Pacelli soon to be Pius X11? Mussolini arrived at a concordat as well with the Pope in which the Facists were left alone in exchange for a picture of the Pope and a crucifix in every classroom, voiding a tradition of non-sectarian schooling of a United Italy. In Poland the Church in a great part, brought down the Communist party when it would not comply more with its’ wishes, for after 50 years of co-operation the Commies thought the Church was still happy with the relationship. In 2004 the Church forced the Irish government to never disclose the name of the molesters and capped any damages at 120 million pounds. To this day the culprits go unnamed and the pay-out so far by the Irish Government is over 1.2 billion pounds in other words, the victims are doing the penance. Unless you grew up in a Catholic milleau, their power to ostricize and intimidate would amaze you. Kids who complained were called liars and their parents,if they persued the matter, were threated with lawsuits and or excommunication. The priests actually knocked on your door demanding to know if you were using the rhythm method or bith control or to expain why you only had 1-2 kids. I saw it! Just recently that graduate of the Hitler Youth refused to call a holocaust denier Cardinal to account and under Franco the Spanish Military actually had a rank of Aide de Camp to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Where torture was a part of the “justice” code (Chile under Pinochette, etc) the Church offered solace and therapy to the torturers who were having a tough time accepting their jobs.

Sorry to interject some reason and logic to this, Pedophiles are stuck in a mode. They are in the age of sexual attraction when it was developed. It tends to reflect the focus of that sexual attraction, some it is not so much homosexual as it is whom they had their first sexual contact with. Long story but it is far more common for the first sexual contact to be with the same sex. Be it male or female it is often with the same sex. Simply enough, if 12 y.o. Johnny asks if 12 y.o. Mary down the street can sleep over in his bedroom there is objection! If Johnny asks if Bobby down the street can sleep over in his bedroom it is agreed to.
It is not consider homosexual desire as much as simply sexual exploration.

Peds who go after young boys are stuck in that age range.

OK now back to illogic bashing of Homosexuals and associating them to molesting children. Later kiss-kiss bye-bye!

Writer Dog — good observation… Just one word — The percentage of pedophiles that are homosexual isnt terribly high… Most of them are, in fact, heterosexual… They have a major screw loose…

However, homphobes wont back off of their insane bigotry against gays… That is their loose screw!!

Trolls are usually sad, lonely folk, with few social skills; they rarely make what most people would consider intelligent conversation. However, they frequently have an obsession with their IQ and feel the need to tell everyone. This is so frequent, that it is diagnostic! The religious nuts here are claiming the story from Ireland was an isolated incident from 30yrs ago. Yet the curch has had to pay billions and billions to abuse victims just in this country, and more are turning up daily.
Historically, the 11th century church owned brothels that they hoped would keep the priests and monks away from their nuns. The 18th century Jesuit schools were well known in their day for sexual and physical abuse of students and each other. The Marquis de Sade got his start from them. Casanova was a priest. And how many popes had concubines?
And that’s just the catholics. Protestantism has opened whole new venues for abuse and has been just about as rife with scandals. You’ve heard about them, from Aime Semple McPherson to Jim Jones to Jimmy Swaggart to Jim Bakker to all the others that are in the news lately.
Now I’m not saying that the cause is religion- abuse has been around a lot longer than churches- but churches have dealt with it in ways that are designed to protect the church and not the victims, and insure that the abuse will be ongoing. They could have admitted it and prosecuted it or turned it over to the state to prosecute. They could have at least tried to bring justice and healing to the victims. They didn’t on either count. When charges arose, they tried to smear victims, they transferred priests to other places to molest more kids, they made settlements with victims and families of victims that enforced silence. It was all about covering their own asses. Now the church is in a crisis that it may not survive, and the church brought it on itself, and is desperately casting about for someone else to bear the blame (see above posts).

The consistent theme I see here (no, actually daily), is that most Dems believe religion is stupid, and all Christians are child abusers/molesters and flaming hypcrites. Once again, I suggest Dems should all run on that platform going forward, I’m sure it’ll be a winner!

    BFD,
All? Certainly not, but the many who post here exhibit many of the character flaws that make the religious a poor working example of of the morality they attempt to impose on the rest of society. Get busy cleaning up up your own back yard instead of blogging bleats and maybe you’ll get treated with the respect you so yearn for.

    reggie,
    “At least they were compensated…”

Only because the courts finally stepped in and forced the church to take responsibility for their actions. The vast majority died long before justice was available to them. They were called liars by the church or threatened or coerced into silence to protect the reputation of corrupt popes, cardinals, bishops, priests monks and nuns. Others were delayed justice by the secrecy of the church until the statutes of limitations denied it. Only because a courageous few managed to finally be heard were many more able to come forward. I suspect that the true magnatude of the sexual/physical abuse scandal has yet to see daylight. When it does, it will bring down what could have been a force for great good, had it only been honest with itself.

    DEJ – “all”..oh, you’re right, I missed MH’s qualifier above:
“Of course there are some “christians” who don’t beat and molest kids. Dozens of ‘em, for all I know.”
Out of a billion or so, there’s “dozens”.
It is interesting that you apparently know so much about my “back yard”. And I can’t say anything more clearly than…I ain’t yearning for ANYTHING from you.
Did I somehow suggest that I support the morally corrupt who hide behind religion, such as the Irish reported on above…or did I simply suggest that instead of thrashing religion on a daily basis on this lame blog, people who feel the need should step up and say it out loud by running as a candidate who shares that view of Christians with the world?

    Branding

Never address the troll as any direct response simply feeds it. Search for the troll by name or slogan. Send a message, headed:

    “Troll Alert – [troll's name]”
to the group, with text along these lines:

“Trolls Nic” is a troll. It regularly frequents at least twenty news groups, including rabid/sex/racist groups.

Normally, it starts off with reasonable, even witty lines,
but rapidly drifts into lies, abuse and stupidity.

    Check its details at Google
Groups. It is a sad creature, deserving of pity, not anger. Any direct response
simply feeds it, but it will go away if you ignore it. The key to success is a cool, measured, accurate posting. In my experience, unless the group is silly (in which case, they deserve a troll or two) this never fails.

Am I supposed to be surprised?? Nothing that organized religion does surprises me at all. Most of them are the worst of the evil. Jesus came into the world to SAVE it and if he had any idea how his teachings would be taken and twisted buy today’s religious nutcases and churches, he probably would have had second thoughts about that mission!

    Daddyboy,
Every generation since Jesus has seen the signs and assumed it was in the end days. So far those end days have lasted almost 2,000 years. What makes you so certain they won’t last a few thousand more? Not something you ought to be depending on.

  172. dadman

Know this first of all [ Jed ] .. that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking .. following after their own lusts .. and saying .. “Where is the promise of His coming? .. For ever since the fathers fell asleep .. all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation” .. For when they maintain this .. it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water .. through which the world at that time was destroyed .. being flooded with water .. But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire .. kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men .. But do not let this one fact escape your notice .. beloved .. that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years .. and a thousand years like one day .. The Lord is not slow about His promise .. as some count slowness .. but is patient toward you .. not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance .. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief .. in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat .. and the earth and its works will be burned up .. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way .. what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness .. looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God .. because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning .. and the elements will melt with intense heat .. But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth .. in which righteousness dwells . . . . II Peter 3

    Daddyboy,
    And?
What exactly is it that makes these last days any different that all the previous last days? Or all the future last days?

One of the most interesting of the end days stories I heard was about a bunch of religious nuts whose preacher took them out in the woods to await the last judgement, which he figured was due on October 7th, 1913. When a reporter showed up around the first of November to ask wha’ Happen?, he was told by the preacher that the world ended as scheduled, and he couldn’t be blamed if the reporter was too dumb to notice!
