“Star Wars” creator George Lucas objects to liberals likening Dick Cheney to Darth Vader. He told columnist Maureen Dowd that Anakin Skywalker is a promising young man who was turned to the dark side by an older politician and became Darth Vader. “George Bush is Darth Vader,” he said. “Cheney is the emperor.” Lucas added: “You know, Darth Vader is really a kid from the desert planet near Crawford, and the true evil of the universe is the emperor who pulls all the strings.”

I didn’t see any of the Star Wars until the 1990s, was too busy working overseas and what not.
Now I understand further why I waited, with a mentality like Lucas.
BTW, Star Wars and films by Lucas are generally pretty hokey – muppets?? – please…
That’s because you are OLD James.
bush isn’t Darth Vader. bush is more like Jar Jar Binks. A simple minded idiot who everyone hates. Cheney is THE personification of the Emperor. Cold, cruel, calculating and evil.
I see we’re having liberal pap for breakfast again, washed down with freshly squeezed stupid juice.
Think I’ll pass.
Not not of this world enough for ya outlander? Or too much?
I don’t think BlueJay passed on breakfast.
Both characterizations, of course, are Hollywood-like in their simplistic notions.
Bush did what he believed was in the best interests of the US; whether you agree with that decision is of course of to you, and individuals are entitled to disagree with those judgments.
Obama is doing what HE believes is in the best interests of the US; whether you agree with those decisions is or course up to you, and individuals are entitled to disagree with those judgments.
Much more than that is merely moonbat fantasy.
Hard to disagree with the creator of the characters in his characterization of them.
But I do.
Annakin Skywalker was idealistic and good hearted. His fall came from caring TOO much.
george bush was a dimensionless, disinterested puppet.
Cheney as the Emperor though, is spot on.
I prefer to see the Vader/Cheney connection through the Vader/Stewie Griffin connection. Brings out Cheney’s venial, petty, vengeful, self-serving side.

Jar Jar Binks never stopped talking and was an idiot…think you pegged your boy’s VP Biden much better than Cheney. That being said…thank God it’s Friday, so there’s at least some excuse for having a discussion about what Lucas thinks and how movie characters “think”….
Star Wars ding-a-ling robot character CF2K stops by the blog!
I wish they hadn’t killed him off so early on.
Henceforth, I shall refer to the former commander in thief as george george.
outlander,
That’s some pretty elevated discourse, there. Guess seeing Cheney taken down to Stewie’s level cut your hero worship a little close to the bone.

Bush did what he believed was in the best interests of the US; . . .
—————
I’m impressed– GMC70 knows what the POTUS’s personally believe, and all of their motives.
Does this mean Obama is C3PO the know it all who knows nothing at all?
Star Wars does not correctly depict reality.
There is no Evil power in the universe which does evil simply to be evil. There is only a Good power which is opposed by those who want to be good but in the wrong way. Of course the Good power has decided laws by which we should pursue what is good.
Even so, comparing Cheney to the singular evil power of the universe reveals Lucas’s faith in Politics. Like all liberals, Politics is his religion.
You make the mistake of thinking I bother to click on your links, you ding-a-ling hunk of scrap metal.
DPB,
Seems like ‘ol Dick is the one who won’t stop talking these days. Think he’s a little scared of having to face the music?
outlander,
Can’t get an honest laugh, can you? Name-calling is *so* Fundo!
cosmos checks in to bash someone about knowing motives, while never admitting the slightest possibility of motives playing massive roles in the only debate he/she feels is worth having, climate change. Nope no motives there, just pure as angel pee science.
CF2K – yeah…Dick’s done what now…3 interviews in 3 months….that’s a slow morning for Biden…by the way, does he sound like he’s running from the “music”? Has he backed down from his opinions on what was right to do? Has Biden ever had to apologize for some of the ridiculous drivel that spills out of his mouth…well apologize is too strong, I mean “clarify” his comments?

Man, with lines like that, I don’t understand why you weren’t treated better by the Lucas-creator. Must be the darkness in your heart, you nefarious boob.
“RFL” denies Satan –
“There is no Evil power in the universe which does evil simply to be evil….”
Good luck with the twice-borns who participate in this forum, “RFL.”
DFB,
Motive? Earth’s climate affects our food and water supplies, and our life.
cosmos – also affects scientist’s funding, political power subjectively to “red” states (TX, LA, OK, AK, KS, UT, WY, ND), the green companies that can’t survive without govt mandate driven by a a “crisis”, unions who’ve never been able to dominate the fossil fuel energy markets but would get in on the groundfloor or “green” energy via the “Blue/Green Alliance”, the all Dem lead cap & trade exchange set to make billions, and US sovereignty as we hand over policy decisions to international orgs that would benefit greatly from the US receiving a sweet little economic smackdown.
Cos- how about simple geopolitical motivations? Do you honestly believe this earth is “safer” by the US committing economic suicide at the feet of China/Russia? Do they appear in any form or fashion to be willing to fall on the same sword, or are they simply pulling the oldest joke in the book in a nut kicking contest? The joke being, “let’s kick each other in the scrote till somebody gives up….then we say “Ok, you kick me first”…they do, then say “Ok, you win” and laugh as they continue to kick our economic scrote!
There is no Evil power in the universe which does evil simply to be evil….”
Good luck with the twice-borns who participate in this forum, “RFL.”
Satan is a fallen angel created by God who rebelled against God. Satan is no power when compared with the power of his own creator. Satan does evil when it helps him obtain his goals. He does not do evil simply because it is evil like people choose to do good simply because it is good even if it does not benefit them.
Therefore, there is only one true power in the universe and it is good.
Darn, Monkeyhawk, you beat me to the “evil” thing. But then we all know how it is. Pick and choose as it fits the agenda.

Wow ‘RFL’ knows the mind and motivations of Satan.
How is it possible to truly know the mind and motivation of someone unless….nah….well maybe…
I think bush is in hiding at the undisclosed location (or not still on this planet, was he ever?), so Dick’s the front man.
Cheney came from the Council on Foreign Relations. It is pretty obvious that he ran the show just because of that.
Cheney came from the Council on Foreign Relations. It is pretty obvious that he ran the show just because of that.
Sorry for the DP
The universe was much better off when (The Big) Dick Cheney was in his
hidey hole“undisclosed location.”I expect him to show up next on “Hollywood Squares.”
“Mister Cheney to block.”
You know with those sceerey terrist, one of them has to stay in hiding for peretuity.
Doesn’t Obama and Biden know that?
perpetuity.
DFB,
Huh. Remind me again: is Biden the sitting Vice-President, or is Dick Cheney? With all Darth’s media-whoring / freaking out over the possibility of being held accountable for his criminal and unconstitutional actions, one could be forgiven for concluding that he still thinks he’s the Presiden–sorry, VICE-President.
Only in the Wingnut mind does Cheney’s adherence to his pathological lies count as a virtue. “Consistency is the hobgoblin” of at least one small Wingnut mind ’round these parts.
MH,
No center square for Darth: he’s no Paul Lynde.
How is it possible to truly know the mind and motivation of someone unless….nah….well maybe…
The actions and motives of Satan are cleary depicted in the Bible. Therefore, reading the Bible can allow someone to determine the motivation of Satan.
Also, a simple observation of human nature also reveals the there is only one power and it is good. Even Satan can do good when it benefits him. However, nobody does evil when it does not benefit them.
RFL,
“However, nobody does evil when it does not benefit them.”
Totally disagree. Self-interest is not an adequate theory of motivation, for persons divine or human.
People do evil acts for all sorts of capricious reasons, as well as for reasons that actually work AGAINST their own self-interest.
If you had said that people always do something with an eye toward some good, however misconstrued, I might agree, because the “good” involved need not be my own.
“CF2K” chides me –
“MH,
No center square for Darth: he’s no Paul Lynde.”
You’re right of course. Cheney isn’t half the man Paul Lynde was. Lynde was a veteran.
As much as I dislike the ex-vice president, the cartoon characterization of him as the evil emperor is sheer Hollywood.
Only a movie person could come up with so thin and stupid a comparison. If it is on film, they actually think it is the truth.
Actors. (and directors). Bah.
Dennis
I saw the first Star Wars movie. Think I saw the sequel. Slept through the third one and never bothered with the rest of them.
Sci-fi is so lame.
People do evil acts for all sorts of capricious reasons, as well as for reasons that actually work AGAINST their own self-interest.
CF2K’s statement is ultimately true. But a person’s cognitive initial interest that motivates them to do wrong does not necessarily involve a calculation of the long term implications of that action.

You’re a comedy team, right?
Which one are you?
“Gobbledy?” Or “G**k?”
The only time I related anything to something in Star Wars and the Bush administration was after I became aware of the extent of the spying and subverting of the Constitution. It was still while the majority were thinking that Bush was a God sent. I think it might have been “The Clone wars” toward the end,
the Emperor declared total power in the name of protecting the Republic. The female lead said to another Senator.
“So this is how liberty end… To the sound of thunderous applause!”.
You got it wrong about Cheney, he is not scared of facing the music. He feels that he is the only one who understands and sees the big picture.
writer – you mean those same “spying” measures that Obama’s still using and kicked up a notch? Or just the one’s he said he was against (FISA) before he was for it when he voted to approve it?
RFL:
“There is no Evil power in the universe which does evil simply to be evil.”
Beg to differ.
It’s called the cable industry.
And the Wichita Eagle features department.
“Revenge of the Sith,” it turns out, can also be seen as a cautionary tale for our time — a blistering critique of the war in Iraq, a reminder of how democracies can give up their freedoms too easily, and an admonition about the seduction of good people by absolute power.
Some film critics suggest it could be the biggest anti-Bush blockbuster since “Fahrenheit 9/11.”
“Filmmaker George Lucas insists that the genesis of his story dates back 30 years. But he pointed out that certain themes do seem to repeat themselves, whether here and now or a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.”
-circa 2005
Sure Mr Lucas, Just a mere coincidence! “Don’t think this is a political film young Republicans and come see my movie.”
Oh yeah, it is 2009 and of course it was political.
Extraordinary to what an Artist can portray for they are the true leaders of mankind.
Oldest profession in mankind’s history, cave drawings, right next to prostitution.
The Force is with Us!
outlander: you didn’t pass, you stopped in to let us know how level you are. duh.
Star Wars is a myth, much the same as the myths that inspire Christians and Maenads and Dervishes. It is not a direct representation of the universe and was never intended to be; it is a story to explain the complexities of the human soul and human behavior, as are all myths. Anyone who thinks Dickybird was the emperor with Bushie as Darth Vader is misunderstanding both Star Wars and the meaning and power of myths.

porn must have followed that shortly too.
Wiseman,
That was kind of you, but artists aren’t the leaders of mankind, we’re simply people engaged in a continuing and wide ranging discussion on the essence of meaning, the human condition and the aesthetic experience, etcetera. We may occasionally come across some bread to cast upon the water, but often it returns just soggy. We don’t want or need political power; the power of images is quite sufficient, thank you.
Brian,
“porn must have followed that shortly too.”
Sexuality is definitely a part of the human condition, and discussion of it through images is fairly common among artists. Porn is a discussion of sexuality by people who for the most part don’t understand either art or sexuality.
Here’s a comparison for you. Obama as Nicolae Carpathia. How many of you out there even know who that is. If you read, you might know. But I doubt it, it would require reading books that are out of your league.
Or how about Obama as Amir Hussein working with powers that make the emperor look like a weak old fool.
I doubt any of you LLWs leftist liberal weenies would even know who the characters are. You can watch movies but you can’t read.
Oh and if any of you figure it out it’s because you are so smart that you can actually type in the words in google. Oh I’m so impressed.
Wow – is this ever ironic. It would actually be Obama who is most like Emperor Palpatine. Started out as a likeable senator. People really don’t know anything about him or where he really came from, but he sure seems nice. Uses his perceived charisma and political sauve to work his way in a very short time from senator to chancellor/president. Likes the power, but that pesky democracy is in the way. Uses backroom influences and the cry of necessity to slowly carve himself more powers. Controls the information given by the media. And then – POW! One day he is all ruling and democracy is dead while every one stands up clapping and saying what a great guy he is, all while he blames the bad things on those worthless Jedi/Republicans. That is the true story of Emperor Obama.
DFB, yes it is alarming though I am not sure if Obama has kicked it up a notch that sound more the same old nonsense that when you do not have anything legit you make something sound worst then it really is.
And hope that no one actually fact checks.
But the reasoning for Obama to not out and out stop it maybe even more alarming. It would mean that the terrorism threat within the U.S. is far worst then we know. Just how many hundred’s thousand terrorists would warrant continuing these violations of the Constitution? Although I figure it might actually be a surprise to OBL just how well he is doing.
By the way, BlueJay, Jar Jar is actually your daddy, you clown.
To compare Darth Vader to george george bush is insulting to Darth Vader. Vader was an intricate and tragic figure.
george george aint that deep.
writer – if they reset the rules in 2008, to make sure citizen’s liberties were not being infringed on….and they just discovered “overcollection” of intelligence occuring on Obama’s watch…he’s kicking it up a notch.
“The warrantless wiretapping program came back into the news this week when the New York Times reported that the National Security Agency was still monitoring Americans, but violating the terms of the new authority it got from Congress in 2008.
“Several intelligence officials, as well as lawyers briefed about the matter, said the N.S.A. had been engaged in ‘overcollection’ of domestic communications of Americans. They described the practice as significant and systemic, although one official said it was believed to have been unintentional,” the April 15 story said.”
And all this, after his repeated campaign promises to end wiretaps altogether…..so what I do agree with is that Bush & Obama aren’t really any different.
“… international orgs that would benefit greatly from the US receiving a sweet little economic smackdown.” [BFD] [DFB]
Just which int’l orgs are benefitting from our current economic smackdown… please be specific…
Thank you.
Chas – well, let’s see, if we’re financially weak and our dollar devalued, making any purchases of foreign goods more expensive and all of our citizens savings/401Ks/pensions/etc more worthless….let’s see, I’m trying to think…who is it that we import a lot from again….China, Venz, S Korea, S Arabia….and if the globe’s “big brother” is too financially strapped to protect all the world’s “weary”, gee..wonder if China gets free reign to keep pillaging Africa/Myanmar/etc I mean surely they wouldn’t leverage us because we have to borrow money from them to pay off our federal VISA each month….or Venz gets more latitude to bunk up with Russia/Cuba & the rest of his dictator bro’s in S. America….and if our economy sucks, and our dollar is worthless….wonder if the IMF will start chirping about a “global reserve bank” or a “global currency”….huh, that’s weird all of that’s happening…and Mexico, oh sweet Meheeco, no chance of that country destabilizing with us in a weakened economic state…..now, with specifics, would love to hear how all of that’s good news for the US.
BFD,
I used to know a guy who was diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia. You’re sounding an awful lot like he did shortly before he killed himself; get back on your meds please, and soon.
Jed or Dej, whichever it is, wow, the one thing about you freakshows…you’re consistent. When you got nothing, go with an insult. I’ve got a friend that killed himself too, just keep saying ignorant things like this where you’re all safe and warm in mommy’s basement…
BFD,
Actually, as hard as it might be to deal with people who are all about conspiracy theories, I was attempting to show a modicum of concern. Thank you. I won’t do that again.
Jed – You’re more than welcome. More than welcome to provide actual content to your comments instead of cocky liberal sewage. Weird how my recitation of current affairs, is a “conspiracy theory”. Name one thing I said above that isn’t happening. By the way, I had a friend who killed himself, tells me all I need to know about your “modicum of concern” to be so glib about he subject.
