Cleanup day showed a lot of love

lovewichitaIt can be difficult sometimes to get 100 people to help with a service project. So it was especially impressive that about 3,000 citizens volunteered Saturday to clean up parks, paint homes for the needy and give back to this community in other ways. The Love Wichita event was organized by 27 churches and spearheaded by Eastminster Presbyterian Church, which began the annual event last year. Hats off to everyone who participated, and here’s hoping for an even larger turnout next year.

Love Wichita was not about ‘giving back to the community’. It was about going out into the World to demonstrate the love of Christ through service.

I guess they only wanted church people?

I didn’t hear any call for volunteers for this worthy event or I would have been right there.

    Still, good on them.

Churches have been doing it for centuries. Whether it’s soup kitchens, clothes drives, disaster aid, foreign aid, missions to build homes/schools/etc, free counseling, or just simple fellowship. Service isn’t a new concept for the church.

BJ, although I’m sure they would have allowed non-church people to help, I somehow doubt that they would be willing to share the love of Christ. Maybe someone needs to organize a similar secular event….. I know some folks like Ben do cleanups around the river before Riverfest.

Look at those awful evil rightwingnut cons church people!

What have they done! This must be a very difficult acknowledgement of the church performing a positive role in our community. It has to be tough trying to beat up the religious nuts on one hand, and appreciating them with the other. Damn those pesky terrorist anti-abortionists!

And Bluebird, anyone could volunteer. Lot’s of non members showed up to help our church members. Everyone just came on their own free will and pitched in! Everyone in the community was invited over the last few weeks.

This Saturday – May 2 – at 9 AM is the River cleanup. Check in at L-D stadium and get bags and gloves. Several groups ranging from Ark River Coalition to South Central Improvement Alliance are involved. Everyone is wecome to help.

Cargill is sponsoring a cookout at L-D afterwards.

Hi Sam – yep, this is the one. And ALL are welcome – churched and unchurched.

Sam – a favor please. Get the word out to stash bedrolls preferably away from the river. I know the groups I am with will leave such rolls if stashed ‘up top’ under a bridge but I cannot be sure of other groups. They might not be aware that they are looking at a person’s entire existence.
