Is Sebelius about to be picked?

Obama 2008 EndorsementKansas House Speaker Mike O’Neal said that Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has canceled a Monday meeting with legislative leaders. Is she about to be nominated for U.S. secretary of health and human services?

Tax cuts are GOP’s answer for everything

taxcuts“George W. Bush called for tax cuts to deal with the dangerous budget surpluses that Bill Clinton had been running, and then called for tax cuts to close the deficit his earlier tax cuts had created,” wrote Harold Meyerson of the Washington Post. “He proposed tax cuts to finance his war in Iraq. And in that same spirit, defeated presidential nominee John McCain, in his Republican alternative to the Democrats’ stimulus bill, called for nothing but tax cuts to remedy the current meltdown. . . . The Republicans’ belief in tax cuts is beyond the realm of empirical argument. Data do not daunt them, nor facts compel reflection.”

Brownback, Roberts mostly mum on their taxpaying

brownbackhand4Politico asked the offices of all 99 sitting U.S. senators “who prepares their taxes, whether they or the Internal Revenue Service has ever discovered an error on returns they’ve filed, and whether they’ve ever had to pay back taxes.” The office of Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., was among those of 41 senators that failed to respond. The office of Sam Brownback (in photo), R-Kan., said the senator’s taxes are prepared by an accounting firm in Kansas that needed more time to answer the questions. Last month Brownback and Roberts both voted against the confirmation of Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, whose failings as a taxpayer Brownback called “inexcusable” and Roberts called “the best case yet for undertaking reform to make the tax code simpler for all taxpayers.”

Big surprise: Pro-lifers oppose Sebelius for HHS

cheechchongKansans knew it was coming — the social conservatives’ pushback at the idea that pro-choice Gov. Kathleen Sebelius might be nominated as secretary of health and human services. On Tuesday the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition (and veteran of Wichita’s 1991 “Summer of Mercy”), called her “an extremist and radical when it comes to abortion,” detailed his grievances against the governor and concluded: “This nomination makes about as much sense as nominating Cheech and Chong as drug czars.”
