I used to be left-handed, until I was ‘corrected’ by school teachers. I’m told that I come a long line of ‘left-handers,’ most of who were ambidextrous.

But back to the topic – there could be and should be some cuts in schools. There is a lot schools can do to cut back, in energy consumption for instance.

It’s no surprise Republicans want to cut education funding. If people in Kansas become too educated then more Democrats will get elected to office.

More than half the state’s budget — $3.2 billion — goes to pay for public school education in grades K-12. Pair that with shrinking revenue, and education should not expect to be exempted from cuts.
It makes no sense to ignore that on political grounds. When the economy is tanking and people are hurting it’s time to make cuts where cuts can have some bottom line effect. Much larger percentage cuts will have to be made if education becomes a political football and not included.
What’s better, cut education a small percentage and realize a large net effect, or cut assistance to those in need of health care by much a larger percentage. Or how about transportation and our roads, or higher education, or any of the other categories that would require much larger percentage cuts to have an effect.
Wichita itself spends over $605 million a year, over $12,000 per student,…..that is ridiculous. Private and parochial schools spend half that and do a better job universally.
No, it will hurt much more if the cuts have to come from everything other than education, and it will hurt the people of Kansas and the economy for a long time to come as well it taxes are again raised.

WAH! Remember all the BS Clinton-bashing when Bush took office?

Besides, all Obama did was tell the truth about the difficulties that lie ahead trying to deal with the festering problems that ’somehow’ have developed over the past several years.

I hate to tell Nancy, but a 10lb anvil is a toy. Mine weighs 164lbs, and it’s only a small to average anvil.

    Reggie,
“I used to be left-handed, until I was ‘corrected’ by school teachers.”

    So that’s your problem.
My mother was left-handed, and her small-town Missouri teachers beat her every time she picked up a writing implement with her left hand. It never “cured” her, but it did leave her with an abiding hatred of authority that turned her into a free-thinker and served her well over the years. She was an excellent artist who drew beautifully with her left hand. She would never have learned to draw as well with her right hand.

    In today’s Eagle:
“The head of the Kansas Department of Corrections told employees Tuesday that proposed budget cuts could force the department to stop supervising the state’s 5,800 parolees beginning April 1.

The cuts also could mean closing the Winfield and Norton prisons, and ending treatment programs for inmates and parolees.

“None of these possible reduction areas are desirable, and all of them could make Kansas less safe,”

Is this what folks want that don’t want to touch the education budget? The cuts in areas like this will have to be much much deeper percentage wise than a small percentage cut in the massive education budget that makes up well over half the entire state budget.
To place politics over what is best for the state is treason, hear that Democrats in Topeka and Kathy.

It is a false dilemma Box. Same as here. They threaten to close police stations. Funny thing is, why aren’t state senators and congressmen’s salaries cut? Why isn’t the governor’s salary cut? Why not lay off the PR people?

There is a ton of room in every state budget to cut. That doesn’t get headlines though. So they roll out the dramatic –NO POLICE !!! PRISONERS SET FREE!!!

    “SolDevVB” –

It’s a tried-and-true political ploy among the Kansas Republic Party:

“…threaten to close police stations. “

And Kansans have traditionally fallen for it.

If anyone in politics had any sense they’d volunteer for the job then do as George Washington did during the Revolutionary War and work for no salary, only “expenses.”

There are several accounts of Washington’s expense accounts… lots of whiskey, furs, loins of beef, curtains, wine… (obviously only to curry favor with the French… heh-heh).

There are legislators who gleefully collect per diem money and sleep in their campers, collecting the “fair” market difference between the most expensive hotel room in Topeka and their actual out-of-pocket expenses.

All these “…close the fire houses” tactics are old and sad and ham-fisted. But no more ham-fisted than the Republic Party’s naive “across-the-board” budget cuts.

Rep. Bill Otto is the goofiest of Kansas Republic Party legislators. He’s the guy who suggested we all cut gpvernment employees’ hours and salary 10%.

So… we’d only guard prisons 21-and-a-half hours a day since we can’t pay ‘em for a 40-hour week.

And if your house happens to catch fire between 2 and 3:30 a.m., well… them’s the breaks.

It’ll take some serious thought and consideration — something the Republic Party majority in the legislature perpetually can’t achieve — to realize there are probably some agencies with twice as much money as they need and there are other essential services which will be crippled by “across-the-board” budget cuts.

MH, do you realize how much of an imbecile you appear to be when you say “republic” party. Most people don’t get it, they just think you are an idiot.

On the other hand, saying democrat party is proper and correct usage. I never have understood why it causes people like you to get your panties in such a bunch.

To the other lefties who posted earlier on this blog: I came from a family of 6 (2 parents & us 4 kids; three of us were born lefties, My dad, my younger sis, and myself. When my dad, born in 1900, started grade school, the teachers kept forcing him to use his right hand. Like Jed’s mom, I think that caused my dad to rebel about some things in life.

When he wasn’t in school, he used his left hand. As an adult, his writing was even more difficult to read than that of a doctor writing out your prescription. It is a good thing that is no longer what most teachers would do.

I took a sewing class in jr. high & the teacher gave me a B instead of a C because I was a leftie. which explained my awkwardness to her; it worked out quite well in my favor!

There are lots of lefties in my family too. The part that bothers me is his statement “Get used to it.” What kind of an attitude is that? Is that going to be what we get used to for the next four years?

Yes, Obama should have said, “Oh, I am so sorry that you might find my writing style odd in view of the fact that I’m left-handed. Please let me know what I can do to make watching me write more comfortable for you.” Sheesh.
