Why is Dr. Schneider being prosecuted in the media without opportunity to defend his side. Most people who know him in the Haysville area say really good things about him. He was working in a difficult area of medical practice.

The irrefutable fact of evolution just got more irrefutable. No surprise creationists will deny the facts, because they deny what they don’t understand.

‘Reverse Evolution’ In Real Time Provides Key Insights Into Basic Mechanisms Of Evolution

ScienceDaily (Jan. 12, 2009) — Scientists have turned back the clock on the evolution in the fruit fly to provide key insights into the basic mechanisms of evolution.

In his book, Wonderful World, Stephen Jay Gould writes about an experiment of ‘replaying life’s tape’, wherein one could go back in time, let the tape of life play again and see if ‘the repetition looks at all like the original’. Evolutionary biology tells us that it wouldn’t look the same – the outcome of evolution is contingent on everything that came before. Now, scientists at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) in Portugal, New York University and the University of California Irvine, provide the first quantitative genetic evidence of why this is so.

In this study, to be published online in the journal Nature Genetics, Henrique Teotónio and his colleagues recreated natural selection in real-time, in the laboratory (rather than based on inferences from fossil records or from comparing existing natural populations) and provide the first quantitative evidence for natural selection on so-called standing genetic variation – a process long thought to be operating in natural populations that reproduce sexually but which, until now, had never been demonstrated.

More real science, not creationist whining at:

When a doctor’s practice causes over 50 deaths due to accidental overdose, something’s really wrong. Doctors are responsible for the type and amount of medications they precribe. There is no excuse for such a thing to happen.

Here we go again. A scandal a minute.

“WASHINGTON – Secretary of State appointee Hillary Rodham Clinton intervened at least six times in government issues directly affecting companies and others that later contributed to her husband’s foundation

The overlap of names on former President Bill Clinton’s foundation donor list and business interests whose issues she championed raises new questions about potential ethics conflicts between her official actions and her husband’s fundraising.”

    ER and mortality stats

    * In 2000, 43 percent of those who ended up in hospital emergency rooms from drug overdoses-nearly a half million people-were there because of misusing prescription drugs.
    * In seven cities in 2000 (Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Seattle, and Washington, DC) 626 people died from overdose of painkillers and tranquilizers. By 2001, such deaths had increased in Miami and Chicago by 20 percent.
    * From 1998 to 2000, the number of people entering an emergency room because of misusing hydrocodone (Vicodin) rose 48 percent, oxycodone (OxyContin) 108 percent, and methadone 63 percent. The rates are intensifying: from mid-2000 to mid-2001, oxycodone went up in emergency room visits 44 percent.

Two airmen were driving across country on leave. They come to a Marine Corps base and decide to visit. They approach the gate and the Marine Guard walks up to the driver’s window, and taps on it with his nightstick. The driver rolls down the window, and the Marine smacks him in the head with the stick.

The driver says, Why’d you do that?

The Marine says, You’re on a United States Marine Corps Base, son. When I come up to your car, you’ll have your ID card ready.

Driver says, I’m sorry, We’re in the Air Force, and we didn’t know.

The Marine examines the I.D. card and gives it back to the driver.

The Marine walks around to the passenger side and taps on the window. The passenger rolls his window down, and the Marine smacks him with the nightstick.

The passenger says, What’d you do that for?

The Marine says, Just making your wishes come true.

    The passenger says, Huh?

The Marine says, I know that as soon as you pull away you’re gonna say, ‘I wish that Jarhead would’ve tried that sheeet with me!’

U.S. mortgage meltdown linked to 2005 bankruptcy law

    By DAN MARGOLIES
    The Kansas City Star

There’s no shortage of blame for the mortgage crisis that drove the economy into the ditch.

But here’s a fresh culprit: the 2005 bankruptcy reform act, which was strongly pushed by the credit card industry.

So say three researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, who argue that the legislation shifted risk from credit card lenders to mortgage lenders, helping trigger the surge in home foreclosures.

Since you are selling the SCHIP program for the poor Chas, what is the maximum income level to qualify for the program, for a family of 4? (That means a mom & dad & 2 kids)

(I want to see how Chas defines P O O R. When talking about tax rates, the definition is one dollar amount, when talking about free government handouts, that dollar number is a different amount. The definition of “P O O R” changes depending on the subject.)

Researchers Link 2005 Bankruptcy “Reform” Act to Mortgage Melt-down

There’s no shortage of blame for the mortgage crisis that drove the economy into the ditch.

But here’s a fresh culprit: the 2005 bankruptcy reform act, which was strongly pushed by the credit card industry.

So say three researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, who argue that the legislation shifted risk from credit card lenders to mortgage lenders, helping trigger the surge in home foreclosures.

Before Congress passed the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, households could erase their unsecured debts by filing for Chapter 7 liquidation. That freed up income that distressed homeowners could use to make mortgage payments.

The new law, however, forced better-off households seeking bankruptcy protection to file under Chapter 13. That chapter requires homeowners to continue paying their unsecured lenders.

In other words, say the Fed researchers, cash-strapped homeowners who might have saved their homes by filing Chapter 7 are now much more likely to face foreclosure.

“Is it just coincidence that the surge in subprime foreclosures that has rocked financial markets came right after the bankruptcy reform in 2005?” they asked. “Is that surge just about falling home prices, bad mortgage decisions and weak economic conditions?

Most likely because it’s none of your business.

Some faiths like the Mormons are extremely strict on tithing. They have counselors that have prepared data sheets on the totality of your income and the tithe amount is drawn directly from your bank account.

These days of people living beyond their means is too frequent.

A general rule of thumb is never purchase a house if the mortgage payment will be more than 25 percent of your income after your other expenses.

If your mortgage is $1000/month and your expenses other than the mortgage is 2500 a month, you darn well better have about 5500 or more in net income so you won’t get in financial trouble. Not gross, I said net income.

Lack of financial planning is the major pitfall to most home buyers. They just don’t add up the numbers and spend every last nickle they have, forgetting about things like food and other expenses.

Capn: Critics such as yourself have often derided the Act as being mean-spirited and hard on the poor, but they overlook the most important effect that the bill was intended to to have, and that is to reduce interest rates. One consideration for lenders to take in to account in compiling data to determine an interest rate is the compensation for the risk of default. As most financially minded people know, the higher assumption there is of risk, the higher the interest rate. This assumes of course that a creditor cannot, in the event of default, collect the debt owed him quickly, fully, and with little expense.
As you copied from the article referenced in your posting: “Before Congress passed the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, households could erase their unsecured debts by filing for Chapter 7 liquidation. That freed up income that distressed homeowners could use to make mortgage payments.

The new law, however, forced better-off households seeking bankruptcy protection to file under Chapter 13. That chapter requires homeowners to continue paying their unsecured lenders.”

By making bankruptcy less attractive, those that could really afford to pay their debts are now forced to do just that and in so doing, reduce risk to the lender and reduce interest rates to other borrowers.

Fed researchers said that “cash-strapped homeowners who might have saved their homes by filing Chapter 7 are now much more likely to face foreclosure.”

The risk is still reduced for lenders due to the fact that borrowing guidelines are stricter now that in the past and those “cash-strapped homeowners” were most likely in over their head from the beginning and losing their home was imminent.

If one has had the experience of purchasing a home back in the Carter years (a Democratic Party President) then you will remember the “great deal” we received on our interest rates. It was common to believe that we were getting a deal when we only had to pay 15-17% interest on our home loans.

Thank God for the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2005. The home loan that I opened last year is costing me less than 6%. It affords me more of a home, lower monthly payments, and more disposable income to invest or one in a while, I can treat my family to a night out.

Blame for the “mortgage crisis” can be placed not on the Bankruptcy Act of 2005, it can be more squarely placed on the head of people that over-extended their budget and financially hanged themselves.

Indeed, just about all of business was borrowing from the future to pay off today. But the higher up the pecking order, the more qualified those people were to know better. And the evidence is pretty good they didn’t give a damn. Bernie Madoff’s lawyer spoke at a press conference yesterday and claimed, under the financial regulations as administered by George WMD Bush, a Ponzi scheme is NOT illegal.

Barack Obama is inheriting a swamp Shub not only failed to drain but also stocked with alligators.**

** More silly mixed metaphors. Sorry, but I’m on a roll.

You CONs remind me of Steve Martin’s line –

“I believe the Republicans will one day make America what it once was… a bleak, desolate, arctic wilderness.”

Lack of financial planning is the major pitfall to most home buyers. They just don’t add up the numbers and spend every last nickle they have, forgetting about things like food and other expenses.”

This brings to mind a basic diffence between most Republicans and most Democrats: generally, from a financial standpoint, Republicans think each individual should be responsible for the outcomes of their own actions (or lack of actions) whereas most Democrats think the government should protect or help prevent individuals from hurting themselves (financially).

What I have always found strange (and part of the reason I am a staunch independent) is that from a social standpoint the roles are reversed – Democrats generally are in favor of fewer regulations, more individual freedom, and less government intervention, and Republicans are generally in favor of more government control and protections.

The word “tithe” is defined as the “tenth part.” Typically, a tenth part of all that one has or earns. The first recorded event of tithing was when Abraham gave tihe to Melchizedek king of Salem. According to the Holy Bible, the tithe (10%)is the minimum one should be giving to their minister. But, that is according to “Old Covenant” (GENESIS 14:14-20). According to the actions of the saints in the “New Testament” they sold their posessions and gave it all; Acts 4:32-37.

Isn’t that statement an oxymoron? Consider what you wrote; “facts” “theory” “sound science” all in one partial sentence. What is it? A theory is just what is; a theory not a fact. Theoretically speaking; one may consider that due to the regularity of your posts regarding AGW, that you are close-minded, possess very little social skills, and have a limited range of thought.
That is a theory that I have surmised based on the observation of your posting context here on the “Open Thread” and and because it is a theory it may or may not be fact.

President-elect Barack Obama has been more cautious on the issue and has not endorsed such a recommendation.

Along with the criminal probe, the report called for a Sept. 11-style commission with subpoena power, to gather facts and make recommendations on preventing misuse of power, according to the report by the Democratic staff of the House Judiciary Committee.

The report covers Bush administration policies that Democrats have protested for some time. Among them: interrogation of foreign detainees, warrantless wiretaps, retribution against critics, manipulation of intelligence and political dismissals of U.S. attorneys.

The White House was asked for comment on the report Tuesday, but did not immediately respond.

thank you for again proving you have no science to back your rants and theories.

SolDevVB, there are decades of science to support the AGW theory. Such as this paper co-authored by Dr. Jim Hansen.

‘The ice-core record: climate sensitivity and future greenhouse warming’
    http://pubs.giss.nasa.gov/docs/1990/1990_Lorius_etal.pdf

That AGW science will being used to change policies, and take action against AGW.

This is what SolDevVB has for “science”(sic), and all that he can do to stop AGW policies:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAA
    Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh

    It’s true.

He motorcaded to a house in Maryland this evening, and if the press pool report is accurate, he is breaking bread with William Kristol and David Brooks. (If Brooks and Kristol seem to be unusually briefed about Obama’s thinking, you’ll know why.)

CBS News’s Dan Raviv tells the pool that the house, on Grafton Street in Chevy Chase, belongs to George Will. (Unless he’s moved.)

Tomorrow, I hear Obama has another private meeting with non-Republican opinion columnists.

Ellen Moran, the incoming White House communications director, set these meetings up.

Again — establishment opinion matters to the Obama communications team.

I remember always being car sick on family trips.

Mom and dad and a bro up front and brothers on each side of me. I never got a window. There was an imaginary line running down the backseat on either side of me.
If I strayed one HAIR over onto a brothers side – I got a swift and deadly karate chop. Too short to see over the back of the front seat, and not allowed to look out either brothers window.

Speaking of which, there was no air conditioning. WIndows were rolled all the way down. That was a rule, I guess. In summer time, everyone rolled the window down before lighting a smoke.

Speaking of smokes. Dad smoked dozens of them. Blew mostly right into the backseat. And ashes? Well sure he “flicked” them out his window, but all smokers KNOW where they end up with windows open. BACKSET MIDDLE.

I am not sure if there were music on radio in those days. Dad either had on a baseball game loud enough to hear it over the open windows at 65 MPH and mom’s droning voice – or farm radio. I remember pork belly prices.

Mom had this nasty gum for car sickness. No idea to this day what she had me chewing. But most of the time, I associated it with puking and that’s what I did when the gum was physcially jammed into my mouth.

Of course, the smell was nausiating. Sometimes the three of us in the back seat would puke in unison. ONe, anda two, and a three in a row.

Your description of the car trips above does not help romanticize the time period. Both of my parents smoked, but very little. My dad would smoke two cigarettes a day – more if he was listening to a particularly close OU football game.

    Yes, AmWay–

And there are THREE oxygen atoms in Ozone which is protective at high atmospheres and toxic at low ones.

    Talk about “dumbing down . . . ”

Counting the atoms is utterly irrelevant to toxicity or potential harm. That’s like saying that lead oxide is harmless because it has oxygen it it.

Fatal CO2 poisoning, thanks to automobiles, is one of the most common forms of accidental death by poisoning in the US.

Correction: I meant CO poisoning (carbon MONOxide). It’s oxygen atom doesn’t prevent it from killing people who have fautly exhaust systems on their furnace.

CO2 of course is also toxic in the sense that it can’t be used to oxygenate the blood. Some volcanic rifts are so densely packed with CO2 that any animal that wanders in, doesn’t come back out . . .
