No more foot-dragging on emissions

President Barack Obama showed a welcome new seriousness about the environment today by ordering the Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider whether to allow California and 13 other states to regulate automobile tailpipe emissions. The Bush administration rejected the request in 2007, the first waiver denial by the EPA in the then-37-year-old history of the Clean Air Act. Obama also ordered that the Transportation Department issue guidelines to ensure that the nation’s automobile and light truck fleet reaches an average fuel efficiency of 35 miles per gallon by 2020. President Bush signed a law in 2007 establishing the fuel-efficiency standard, but his administration never wrote any regulations to enforce the law. The Bush White House even refused to open e-mails from the EPA about the harmful effects of greenhouse-gas emissions, because doing so would have forced it to take action.

ANOTHER good move on Obama’s part.

These states WANT tougher emission standards. Cons will have a difficult time arguing against this one. States rights and all?

What’s this? The democrats passed Energy Bill not good enough for Obama?

    December 07, 2007 in print edition A-17
The House on Thursday approved the biggest increase in vehicle fuel-economy standards since gasoline cost less than a dollar a gallon, in a sweeping energy bill that is headed for a showdown in the Senate and a possible veto from President Bush.
The measure would require a 40% increase in fuel efficiency for new cars and light trucks by 2020, for a fleetwide average of 35 miles per gallon, and would be the first congressional raising of the standards since they were established in 1975.
The bill is the Democrats’ first major effort to attack global warming and U.S. dependence on foreign oil since they won control of Congress a year ago.
The 235-181 vote came a day after a Senate panel advanced a separate measure that would cap greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, manufacturing facilities and other sources.
“Today marks the dawn of a future with less dependence on foreign oil, more renewable energy and a safer climate,” Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), chairman of the Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming, said during debate on the House bill..”

sounds like this was a democrats bill to me.

Oh wonderful, now well have even more kinds of cars (13 new states with different rules), new gasoline to blend and therefore create more shortages. There are over 30 kinds of blends for gas now. When one neighbor county runs out of gas, the one next door can NOT bring some over and help out. They are required by the EPA to stay in their area.

And with 13 new car regs , the cars will now be balkanized to. Think 13 different types of engines, pollution equipment, different timing and fuel ratios.

Usual democrat crap. More of their fascist tendencies coming out with their inbred want to command everything.

You will have to monitor what used car you buy to see if it will be legal in your state. Will reduce your resale value.

Tell you what, Ill take the regular car….you can keep your CHANGE.

    mrbill,

There is nothing facist about 13 states setting their own emission standards. California has been setting their own for some years. What is wrong with states having something to say about a law that applies to them.

RE: “sounds like this was a democrats bill to me.”

Did you not read the last two sentences of the post? Bush signed it but never allowed it to be put in force – even to the point of not opening e-mails from the EPA. How childish is that?

At least its a good way to finally kill off the auto companies. Hopefully they will only sell cars in certain states. Then you wont be able to drive in certain states with your model of car.

Each car will come with a list of states you can visit or move to.
