New way to look at slave reparations?

The issue of slave reparations is “political dynamite,” acknowledges writer Paul Devlin of TheRoot.com, but now may be the best and only time to make the case for them. Not because the nation’s first African-American president has been sworn in, but because of the bailout bonanza. As Devlin explains: “Call it a belated bailout of the Freedman’s Savings Bank, chartered by Congress in 1865 as a financial haven for freed slaves and failed in 1874 because its white board lost all the money after a spree of wild speculation. . . . That combination of real assets lost and hundreds of thousands of people involved (to whom most African-Americans today could claim an ancestor) provides a legitimate cover for, or different way of looking at, reparations. It’s not a giveaway; it’s a bailout, you know, just like the kind white people get today.”

What about American Indians and Spanish and French? And, of course, Barack Obama’s father was from Kenya in the sub-Sahara region of eastern Africa. No connection to the Slave trade there. And what about Euro-Americans who came to the U.S. in the mid 1800’s and received virtually no money for back breaking work clearing their farms in arid western Kansas?

You mean there are no black bankers or CEOs getting any of that bailout money because it’s for whites only? Sounds like that needs to be investigated.

This isn’t the 60s, Hank. I think you neeed to get out in the real world a little more. All the African Americans I work and socialize with are busy with their families and professional lives and have no reason or desire to “riot”.

    Real world, Mary?

We’ve elected a president with no qualifications other than he’s black and promised ‘change’.

He’s not going to change the conditions in Detroit or LA.

    Heads up, “Mary_Caruso.”

Sounds like it’s not against “whites” but against “Jews.” The wingnuts are retreating to their militia-driven roots.

A common understanding after you’ve read some wingnut literature is how “Wall Street” means “New York” and “New York” means “Jew.”

It’s obvious the slave reparation issue is a new piece of red meat to throw at the rabid right.

“First they bailed out the Jews, now they’re bailin’ out the Alabama Porch Monkeys!”*

(*Damn. I could ghost write for the Aryan Nation!)

With a “Halfrican,” “Muslim,” “Manchurian Candidate” who’s “not really a citizen” and had-to-take-the-oath twice and “THERE’S A REASON!!!! he didn’t have his hand on the Bible the second time!!”

As we saw on yesterday’s fetish gun thread, the really crazy people are, out of abject fear, stocking up on weaponry.

Next they’ll all dress alike and follow each other around.

    Then rent a Ryder truck.

    For Jesus.

Let’s ask some of the Somalia or Zimbawye refugees if they wish their ancestors had been taken as slaves to America.

“Wait a minute, you mean if you are poor and live in America, the Guvment will GIVE you money just because you have more babies then you can afford to feed?”

I’m betting that ALOT of them wish they had a tenth of the opportunities provided NOT just to blacks but to everyone in this country.

It was the late 1800s, they came with money, the land didn’t need cleared, but was plowed with steam plows. Yes, your dugout-based homesteader existed. Some even held on into the fifties, when I was grwoing up there. But the bulk of the development came from men with financing. Just as always.

I kinda see both sides to this topic. But after spending a couple years in the Alabama/Mississippi/Memphis, Tn area, I think every whitey should spend a couple years as a black in the south. If it won’t teach you empathy at least you’ll learn humility.

    MH –

You really must share that fantasy decoder ring.

Or, perhaps, I can play too? The rules are, apparantly, one makes up one’s own code to demonize one’s ideological opponents. Let’s see:

MH really means: self-rightous demagoguing idiot.

Well, I see how that’s much simpler. How convenient! And much shorter to type.

We could go on. Ya know, if one really had the time, one could dream up our very own, extra-special secret decoder book. With colored pages, secret codes, and all.

But why? MH has the decoder ring. And HE gets to say what others really mean; just ask him, he’ll tell ya. I’m sure that the decoder ring has all those other double-super-secret-hidden-deep-inner-really-intended meanings. Ya know, the “real” ones.

Probably ones with “double-ot” spy double secret meanings. What’s that make you, MH? “double-ot” 13? Did you get your own flying jet-pack too?

    Neeto.

Uh, what clearing? In the mid 1800’s, trees were rare as frog hair in western Kansas, and for the most part it isn’t rocky. The army cleared the buffalos out, and most of the rightful owners of the land were dead from disease and murder.

A couple of thing got me rethinking what Slave reparations means, one being the documentary “meeting David Wilson”. And the other was finding out about the “Doll test” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqSFqnUFOns
both opened my eyes to seeing the topic and effect of slavery upon my fellow man.

What I took away from this is that like most when I heard the term “Slave reparations” I thought it was about money. But perhaps the true meaning is to accept and recognize that this country would not have survived or prospered if not for the blood, swear and bitter tears of the Black people. We glass over it in history books and in passing. But no real acceptance of the facts, in the end we are all a part of each others history. The steps and fall of one is on the path we all have taken.

There will be no reparations until there is true acknowledgement of the contributions of the Slaves to this country. Against their will and as bad as it was they are a part of this all and aided in this country being great.

In the last 40 years since the Civil Rights Act the US gov has spent over 4 trillion dollars on all kinds of silly programs for them. Stupid urban renewal apartments, homes, welfare, anti drug programs , jobs training, education, new schools, affirmative action jobs etc.

Mostly to no avail. Hopefully with Obama in their the nasty habit the kids have of harassing ones that do good in school of “acting white” will cease.

That is the only thing that can get kids up and out is mentors and seeing it happen. And with the removal of Jackson and Sharpton as essentially victim group organizers rather than helpers are out of the picture by Obamas people.

Hopefully the new Black leadership will stop Sharpton from bringing people and kids back down.

    Pleef,
“The white slaves that were brought over here at the start, the ones the colonists used, what of them and their descendants?”

A cousin of mine who is into genealogy did our family tree awhile back and found that one of our ancestors, a catholic, was kidnapped off the streets of Belfast and sold to a protestant family in Boston in the 1670’s.
I know that this was so long ago that I’m not entitled to the forty acres, and probably only owed the back end of the mule, but I want it! It would be symbolic of the whole mess reparations has been turned into by a multigenerational racist society.
