In what sounds less like a joke all the time, people keep suggesting reopening Alcatraz when Guantanamo Bay is closed. For Republicans, the infamous island prison in San Francisco Bay has the added attraction of being in the district of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “There’s a lot of discomfort about the idea of bringing the detainees in to the United States. That’s why I’ve suggested Alcatraz,” said Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Fla. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, also mentioned the idea Sunday. Meanwhile, Pelosi dismissed it, because Alcatraz is a national park and tourist attraction.
But a Rolling Stone blogger doesn’t see the Rock’s status as a tourist draw as disqualifying. “Also keep it open as a tourist attraction. These guys are not superheroes. They’re not Houdini’s. They’re easily contained. And we should make a show of how toothless they really are,” wrote Tim Dickinson.

So that’s why they’ve been imprisoned without charges for six years, they are entertainment for Republicans. There’s already one prison set up like that in Texas.

How about building the prison at Holcomb, out near Garden City, Kansas? They aare looking for industries with jobs. Would replace the bad idea of building coal fired power plants out there.
I think we should make them astronauts. The first solar explorer travelers.
No need for round trip reservations.
Pantywaist Kansas Republicans lose more jobs and money because they are AFRAID.
Pitiful bedwetters.
I agree that Bush created a mess with no solution at Gitmo. Olberman reported last night that no records were kept, so the Obama administration can not even begin to judge what the men incarcerated in Gitmo are accused of.
What’s the point Guantanamo or Alcatraz????
It serves the same purpose and we already have Guantanamo. Why go to the expense of bringing them in here with that associated risk and spending the money to bring Alcatraz up to a level it could even be used.
The suggestion was simply to point out the asinine DimLib objections to Guantanamo.

Ha, glad I was on you mind, what little one you have, all night there misfit.
Oh and pu$$y, who got spanked, ha ha ha.
Seems you’re all talk and no substance, where did your threat to reveal my name, address, etc. go.
I know where it came from, it came from right out of your butt as does everything you say here.
No go away little man, you are not worth reading today or any day for that matter.
Oh, give me a break. The people who take this idea seriously are the joke.
It is a question of treatment and policy, not location. As long as the rules of detainmet are within the “Geneva Convention Rules”, they can stay where they are. Rules and policy, not location, should be followed and reviewed. Herbert West 3rd {D}, Exploratory Campaign Candidate for 2010 Kansas Governor. MiamiCountyOpinion.com
As I’ve posted before: Closing Gitmo does not resolve the real issue. All you are doing is moving the problems somewhere else. At great cost. But it makes Obama’s people “feel good”.
The message to our military and CIA is clear: Take no prisoners.
Some of these prisoners (key figures) were captured after months of pursuit by the CIA trying to find them and get them. Some were captured after shooting and/or murdering our military personnel.
In future engagements, the military will kill them knowing if they are captured they will be let go, sue the US, and we have to ask them pretty please to reveal secrets.
Obama is in such a rush to make his name, create “change”, and show he is responsive: That he is rushing to act. Much like the Unstimulus Plan.
Haste makes waste.
A bunch of uneducated third world villagers, and one would think we’re dealing with Lex Luther’s of the world. Fear mongering is the repub stock in trade.
After we bring home our troops, why not just send them back to where they came from and let their own country deal with them?
Mary you amaze me.
A number of the prisoners are hard corps muslim zealots. Terrorists who are charged with involvement with the 911 act. Heck, they even made statements to that effect. Their families have been blessed as their son being heroes – martyrs with their photo’s held high in local parades!
Many are from Yemen (Bin Laden homeland). Yemen has recently allowed former prisoners to “get away” and those have already been involved in new terrorist acts.
And Mary would say, “Run along home now. Be good boys.”
tsk, tsk.
Well, with homeland security and America having won the war on terrorism, why are you worried about it?
Did Bush even tell us “mission accomplished”? So what are you scared of?
Do you really think that by keeping these guys locked up we’ll prevent another terrorist attack? We haven’t been attacked because terrorists have chossen not to, not because of anything we’ve done.
Our #1 enemy is still out there hiding in a cave, just waiting for us to put 9/11 on a shelf somewhere.
Who’s being naive? You or me?
tsk, tsk!
Nice song and dance Mary. But you still would let go terrorist who have sworn to kill Americans to their Allah.
Your solution to all the problems is to let them go.
You posted that. Not me. And unless you work for the CIA, NSA, FBI, or some other federal agency, it is my humble opinion you are clueless on whether or not that have tried to attack or “chossen not to”.
Is that a waltz, or a rumba?
I didn’t say let them go, those are your words. I said let their countries deal with them.
Or better yet, let Iraq deal with them..
And their countries will treat them like hero’s and/or let them go free.
Some solution Mary.
I like the idea. lol Alcatraz International prison for Criminals, and a terrorist attraction, oops, I mean tourist attraction.
Wink,
“How about building the prison at Holcomb, out near Garden City, Kansas?”
During WWII there were several prison camps for POW’s in rural locations in Kansas. Might not be a bad idea!
Barnie,
“I like the idea. lol Alcatraz International prison for Criminals, and a terrorist attraction, oops, I mean tourist attraction.”
Now would that fall under the purview of the Zoo Association of America, and require the same humane treatment accorded endangered species?
