Even Microsoft is laying off

You know the economy is wobbling when even Microsoft is laying off. Microsoft announced today that it will lay off up to 5,000 of its 94,000 employees over the next 18 months, including 1,400 people today. These are the first large layoffs in company history.

Windows Vista didn’t work out like they hoped.

They are already working on Windows 7.

The problem I’ve found with Vista products is that instead of making them functional, they made them pretty. I don’t need pretty.

Reg, they’re always working on something new. Not necessarily better, just new. If they’d test the crap they put out before they put it out, they wouldn’t need all those patches.

I haven’t bought a computer in a while. Recently bought a laptop that came with Vista. It seems to work ok for basic home use, but was shocked to find that after spending hundreds on a computer, I only had “demo” use of the office products, and had to buy a license after 90 days, or word/exel/outlook would no longer work.

Somehow, I have trouble feeling sorry for Microsoft…

Yea I bought my wife a new laptop for Xmas and ran into the same deal….90 day trial on Office. Really all she needs is word so I am thinking about just installing a decent WP on it. I suppose I could check how many licences I have on my office 2003 at home…$%&* Microsoft. LOL

What is so surprising that MS is laying off just like everyone else? A business can get along in hard times with MS legacy products. There is often no serious need to upgrade. So of course MS might contract a little as a company in hard times, just like everyone else.

No the point of this thread is for yet another member of the media to yell “the sky is falling”.

Life is tough everywhere. MS is just another company. Let me know if they layoff >20% of their workforce or stop supporting products early. That would be newsworthy.

Amway – How is it Obama’s fault because Microsoft is laying off?

I know I will regret asking this….but I can’t wait to hear the latest Rush spin on everything being Obama’s fault.

Free download and open source. Spearheaded by Sun Microsystems, but written by the open sounce community.

The downside? It’s written in Java, which is a great language, but in practice has become a bloated monster. :(

    Regular,

Already? You say that as if it is some surprise.

Of course they are working on something else. That is how they make money.

    Lets see…

Windows, Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1 and NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista…

    AND?

    Oh my?

You say they are “already” working on Windows 7!

    GASP

    Who would have expected that?

Sorry, Regular, you left yourself open, had to take the shot.

I’ve used PCs and I’ve used Macs and I really don’t understand the fetish Apple people have for their machines.

My Mac used to crash once a day. The PC hardly ever (albeit, only when it’s really important, I admit).

And I loved how at least a few Mac-heads took this as a real newscast.

    MonkeyHawk,

You say that as if you would want anyone at all to ever carry concealed in schools.

When you already don’t support the idea at all, singling me out and saying you don’t think I should doesn’t mean much.

    Oh, “Nathaniel” –

    Why do you even try?

“You say that as if you would want anyone at all to ever carry concealed in schools.”

Given the case at hand, I pretty much am committed to keeping someone such as you from walking through elementary schools packing heat, what with your “…you left yourself open, had to take the shot.” attitude.

I mean, with “Nathaniel” hanging around grade schools, them 2nd Graders better learn how to dodge bullets, right?

“When you already don’t support the idea at all, singling me out and saying you don’t think I should doesn’t mean much.”

I’m not singling you out, boy.

I believe pretty much any one who wants to walk down to the local grammar school to watch recess — but only if they’re carrying a firearm — might deserve constraint.

    MonkeyHawk,

What does the school have to do with anything when you think that anyone wanting to carry concealed anywhere “might deserve constraint?”

Again, it is rather pointless to wonder why I would want to carry concealed at a school when you wonder why anyone would want to carry concealed anywhere.

I bought a new laptop, too, Raptor. One of the little ones, since I don’t plan to use it often. It came with XP. Hooray!!

BTW, if you purchase MS Works, MS Word comes on it. Now, I wouldn’t go out and buy a brand new Works, because it wouldn’t be much of a savings, but if all you need is Word, there are new older versions available if you look for them. Paying $35 for Word isn’t nearly as bad as a couple of hundred. ;) I like 2002-2003, but that’s because that’s what I’m used to using. Vista’s Word sucks.

    Nathan,
How about a compromise? Part of the concealed-carry application should be a standard IQ test and an MMPI. Anyone who scores less than 100 on IQ or shows a personality disorder on the MMPI would be permanently denied a permit, no exceptions. Or do you really want the stupid and insane walking around with concealed weapons?
