Wichita City Council candidate James Barfield apparently is appealing to the outraged vote. Speaking to some campaign activists last week, Barfield said that “a legalized gang” is operating at City Hall and claimed that Council members were in the pocket of developers, wichitaliberty.com reported. Barfield also said that he despises developers “who think they can come to the public trough.”

James Barfield has had a weekly call-in show on low power TV channel 5 for a number of years. He has his finger on the pulse of the quiet people of Wichita. He knows what the people are thinking and he’s not afraid to speak out.
I don’t agree with Mr. Barfield on every issue but I think he is needed on the Wichita City Council.
Incidentally, Channel 5 is currently working on increasing their power with a new aerial. I also believe they will be changing their channel 5 to a higher channel number in the near future.
So, stay tuned, as they say.
I might be interested in Mr. Barfield’s candidacy, except his website is chock-full of links to some of the craziest of the right-wing. The last thing we need on our city council is another one-cause, damn the rest wingnut!
Barfield is a joke.
“I don’t agree with Mr. Barfield on every issue but I think he is needed on the Wichita City Council.”
Yeah, just what we need. Someone to pelt police officers with rocks.
This guy makes about as much sense as King David does.
I love the representation that some people try to deploy, based on the choice of old words of romantic times of a past history.
Barfields’s website is title –
“Voice for Liberty in Wichita
Individual liberty, limited government, and free markets in Wichita and Kansas”
Sometimes of the cry of protest, all it seems like is just the changing of the guards.
claimed that Council members were in the pocket of developers,
And what else is new? That’s fairly typical of most city councils.
Which is why, BTW, Kelo v. New London sounded such an alarm. As it should. For Kelo makes clear that our property is ours subject entirely to the whims of our local in-the-pocket councils.
GMC,
The Legislature severely restricted the power of cities to use eminent domain in either 05 or 06 (don’t remember which session, too lazy to look it up).
When I have time, I tune into TV Channel 5’s call-in shows at 6 PM on weekday evenings. Channel 5 is a low-power TV station and not on cable. Currently they are off-the air gearing up for the coming change in TV transmission rules. It looks like they will return on a different channel number. Not easy and very expensive.
I notice that “Jed” of Arizona says about James Barfield’s candidacy: “I might be interested except his website is chock full of links … to the right wing.”
This surprised me so I checked James Barfield’s web site: http://www.jamesbarfield.com. THERE ARE NO LINKS ON HIS WEB SITE, RIGHT OR LEFT.
Basically Barfield’s website says:
** Wichitan and businessman for 30 years,
** Believes the motto: “Of, by and for the people,”
** Tax dollars should not support developers and private business,
** TIF districts haven’t performed well in Wichita,
** City council should concentrate on improving infrastructure and public safety.
THIS SOUNDS GOOD TO ME. IN MY OPINION, IT’S RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE … NOT LEFT NOR RIGHT.
As far as links, Jed, you must be confused by web sites of some of the conservatives and liberals who continuously comment on this WE Blog.
In my opinion, James Barfield is DEFINITELY NEEDED on Wichita’s city council to continue breaking up the “Good Old Boy Network (GOBN)” that has been running and ruining Wichita. Wichita’s GOBN is wasting millions and millions of our local tax dollars with nothing beneficial to show for it.
Barfield will likely get elected for much the same rason Karl Peterjohn did. We have had FAR too much developer pork in Wichita and Sedgwick County – notably WaterWalk city) and the Arena (County). Toss in the deliberate trashing of the Boathouse because a developer covets the land …
As I scroll through the comments above, I see another comment, this time by “Wiseman” that MISTAKENLY credits another web site to Mr. Barfield.
The WRONG web site is actually a libertarian website “Voice for Liberty in Wichita.” That is a very informative website and does furnish links to a number of interesting and informative, generally local, websites. That website is sponsored by a very bright individual, Bob Weeks. Its been said about Mr. Weeks, “You don’t want to be on the other side from him politically if you can help it!”
But as I said above, Mr. Barfield’s correct web site is: http://www.jamesbarfield.com.
bth,
I’ll grant you that there is way too much developer pork, but to go to the exreme end of the right-wing is no way to get rid of it. For the most part, these are the same kind of guys that got us in this mess to begin with, and you can’t expect them to actually want to get us out. I’m betting they simply have a new slate of developers to promote.
I don’t know which political party Mr. Barfield belongs to, nor do I know how Mr. Barfield feels about some of the social issues that are constantly raised by the right and left wingers … but I do know Mr. Barfield opposes needless waste of tax monies by most of our current city councilmen, carry-over county commissioners and many of our state legislators.
Mr. Barfield is an independent voice in politics, not likely to join the back slapping membership of Wichita’s “good old boy network.”
Mr. Barfield has had a TV call-in show on Wednesday evenings on Channel 5 for several years. He and most callers to his talk show are able to reach an amiable consensus.
Its my observation that unlike many of our current elected politicians, James Barfield treats those he talks to with respect and humility.
So, bottom line, I believe the citizens should elect Mr. Barfield in the April non-partisan election to the Wichita City Council.
jed – I did not support Paterjohn for County – I supported moderate fiscal conservative Marcey Gregory. I simple observed that Barfield will get elected for the same reasons Peterjohn did – people are fed up with the GOBN and business as usual.
I’m hoping we get SEVERAL new members on the Council.
