Americans like it cheap, fast

Is this a sign of the apocalypse? Or just of the times? As the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 34 percent in 2008, the biggest loss since 1931, the only Dow stocks to come out ahead for the year were Wal-Mart (up 18 percent) and McDonald’s (up nearly 6 percent).

This means stock market investors have a dismal outlook for the immediate future of our economy. Wal Mart and McDonalds are the two companies that most people would say they receive the best value for their hard earned dollars.

All local governments, city, county and state, should react to this by immediately reducing taxes ten percent.

oh boy….let’s bash walmart again!!! Haven’t seen that in a while! Let’s look down our noses at the store, let’s complain about the millions of people who are obviously forced to shop and work there (held at gunpoint, clearly) and in general bash a successful business. What fun!! After all, that is the ‘cool’ thing to do, isn’t it?

I don’t have any problem with Wal Mart except for their employment practices. Otherwise, they sell pretty much the same stuff that everybody else does at reasonable prices. Buy American? Try finding a TV, coffee pot, or a microwave that’s made in America. It’s not going to happen.

Mrs XXX loves Wal Mart. Whenever she’s feeling a little blue, dinner and a trip to Wal Mart fixes her right up.

What a brilliant suggestion. Which estate sale do you buy your used underwear? Diapers?

Terminate all retail sales…and put millions of people, such as clerks, stockers, truckers, railroad, dock workers and millions of others out of work. Brilliant.

“changed it from Made in America, to Made in China”

Walmart is just a BIG example of the Made in China problem. It takes the biggest hit, but the truth is everywhere you go the story is the same.

The products we consume are not made in America and most stores (almost all that I am aware of) sell products made abroad. Even grocery stores!

Unfair to singel out Walmart on exploiting this. Afterall – the consumer (you and I) demand it. We want everything for FREE, or as close to it as possible.

Walmart, is feeding the baby what the baby wants.

    Blame the consumer.

Exactly: we wanted big, safe, gas guzzling cars, then complain when the big three make them. Walmart employs 1.2 million people in this country, and we complain about how cheap they are. Those same 1.2 million are glad to have jobs at this particular time. They may not be the best jobs, but they are jobs.

Apparently, some here would rather see those 1.2 mil out of work. That would then be 1.2 mil more on the public dole. I have no trouble at all shopping there and supporting the workers.

Card check legislation, if successful, may hold great change for places like Walmart and McDonalds.

This important legislation would allow all workers to know just who it who wants and does not want the right to bargain collectively.

The suck ups and climbers get exposed?

Now organizing a union in a Walmart is something I could sign on to.

FIRST thing to go is the Walmart loyalty song.

Target is a Union shop, and they are profitable. On most items not on the ‘end cap’ their prices are within pennies of WallyWorld. Wally’s grocery prices on the items I buy frequently, are higher than Dillons… and Dillons used to be a Union shop, too. Rather than fight the NLRB over the UFCW’s organization of butchers, Wally fired all their meat cutters and went to boxed beef. I don’t see that as providing employment, but a way to emasculate the collective bargaining process and fire workers rather than negotiate.

The one thing roach & I will agree on is that business is in business to provide goods and services to willing buyers. Consumers, however, change their minds about things much faster than many industries can respond. The winners, as we are seeing in the automobile industry, are those who are already making the product the buyers suddenly decide they want. Americans are infamous for saying one thing (buy American!) but doing another with their money (buy imports).

    Have fun, y’all.
