Bush can’t see the forest or the trees

“Bush’s assault on science and the environment is his second-worst war,” columnist Derrick Jackson wrote, noting how President George W. Bush, in his waning weeks, has freed federal agencies from consulting with government scientists to evaluate the environmental impact of projects and eliminated the 100-foot buffer zone protecting rivers and streams from coal-mining waste. “What could possibly be left of the environment for the Bush administration to degrade on its way out the door?” Jackson asked. It wants to let developers pave forest roads in order to develop residential subdivisions.

No room at Blair House for Obamas?

Whether it was a deliberate act or a last bit of incompetence, the Bush administration decision to book Blair House for one night during the first two weeks of January looks pretty bad, denying the Obama family the use of the presidential guest house. Many of the former constituents of the one-night guest, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, aren’t pleased either. In a Melbourne newspaper’s online poll, 76 percent of respondents said Howard should “give up his rooms” for the Obamas. Howard, who will be in Washington, D.C., next week to receive a Presidential Medal of Freedom, said in 2007 that Osama bin Laden should be “praying as many times as possible” for Obama to win the White House.
