Here is (belatedly) what Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., had to say at the November send-off for Sen. Ted Stevens (in photo), R-Alaska, after his conviction on seven counts of failing to report gifts and home renovations and his re-election defeat. Characterizing Stevens as a teddy bear under a “great, gruff facade,” Roberts said: “Here is a passionate, caring, wise, and, yes, a man with a very good sense of humor.” Now the question is whether Stevens will get a last-minute pardon from President George W. Bush.

A tool like Roberts says a thug like Stevens is a teddy bear?
He should cuddle up with Stevens and Larry Craig and all of them take a house by the sea together.
Pat Roberts. Kansas? I am ashamed of you.
Pat Roberts who knew the truth about bush’s war of choice, who delayed the reports long enough to get bush reelected, calls a convicted felon caring and wise. Guess next to the crimes Roberts covered for those Stevens committed seem less serious. Stevens committed crimes of greed, Roberts is complicit in crimes that caused the death of over 4,200 American soldiers and many more innocent Iraqis.
He might get a “done more good than harm” pardon.
Sounds like a politician’s way of saying he’s a cranky old fart, but he’s our cranky old fart so we’ll stand behind him.
Republicans: No class and no clue.

I think I understand what Sen. Roberts was saying. I can safely say that I’ve had more dealings with Uncle Ted than anyone else on this blog.
Stevens will go down in history for two things…his conviction, and his famous “tubes” statement.
This unfortunate bloviation destroyed what could have been a major accomplishment for him… a deal that would have gotten net neutrality heard in the Judiciary Committee (in its heart, it’s really more of an anti-trust issue than a technology issue), where proponents would have gotten a far better hearing.
Instead, he probably guaranteed another four years of gridlock (at least) on technology issues.
Stevens legacy will be the King of Pork, something Roberts can only aspire to.
But history will be kinder to Stevens than to Roberts.
Kansans obviously either don’t care that Roberts is a con man or they don’t know.
Its unfortunate that republicans in Kansas are so comfortable with corruption and government coverups.
