If Kansas Republicans really do see a 2010 primary clash of the titans for the U.S. Senate seat, between Reps. Todd Tiahrt of Goddard and Jerry Moran of Hays, the western two-thirds of the state may not see much of either of them that summer. As Kansas State University political science professor Joe Aistrup told CQPolitics last week: “They’re facing off in a situation where Moran will do well in the 1st District. I think you’ll see Tiahrt do well in the Wichita area. Really, it will be the Kansas City area and the 2nd Congressional District that will determine who is winner of that primary.”

A primary clash between Tiahrt and Moran — someone has to lose, so there’s no downside.
What a brilliant analysis.
Linda with that primary…..everybody loses. LOL!
It would be nice if they’d both lose, but this will be governor leadership’s waterloo if she really runs. She’s gonna pay this year in the budget quagmire. And her approval ratings, while still high, are dropping. Significantly.
I think she might retire to a nice cushy washington job with her record of wins in tact.
And remember, the last time kansas democrats won a statewide race, without sebelius on the ticket, was… wait for it…. Joan Finney’s last race.
Yeah, there was Paul Morrison, but I think a yellow dog could have beaten philllllllll. And sebelius was on the top of the ticket.
When she’s gone, we’ll see how all her claims of party building hold up. heheheheheh.
Tiahrt vs. Moran. The clash of the wingnuts.
Big eye roll.
“Tiahrt vs. Moran. The clash of the wingnuts.”
—–
But the facts are they both have the ONLY criteria required to continue being elected by Kansans — that little “R” after their name.
The Democratic Party can’t seem to field or support a candidate that might beat either of them.
So, the only strategy left is to hope they run against one another (and that scenario repeats itself multiple times!) so they eliminate themselves.
Seems MUCH better than being stuck with all of them!
More to the thread topic — I don’t care where they need to campaign, what voters will need to be persuaded or which ones would be decisive, the important thing is ONE of them is gone if they both run. ;-)
I think Governor Sebebelius is a gifted politician and might prove it over the next two years.
She should consider an “Eat your Spinach” approach to the budget crisis created by BushCo on the federal and international level and the resulting budget problems which inevitably face the state of Kansas. She should conduct a high-profile effort to work with the state’s congressional delegation — mostly ambitious Republic Party partisans — who will be loathe to provide any federal support that might reflect favorably on the governor. It’ll make Brownback and Moran and Tiahrt look petty and in it for themselves, the people of Kansas be damned.
Meanwhile, infighting between the Moran (semi-)moderates and the Brownback/Tiahrt wing-nuts will preserve the Republic Party’s circular firing squad.
This’ll be fun to watch.
Repubs vs. wingnuts. Might deepen the schism, and let a dem in. If it could get really ugly and keep the other faction from turning out at the polls, but otoh, majority of ks. repubs loved the Huckster, but when he didn’t get the nomination, they still went to vote for mindless mccain.
The question is are Tiahrt and Morans ego’s such that they would both run risking 2 congressional seats and potentially damaging their party? Also other than the Gov who do the democrats have capable of winning a statewide Senate race?
The dems need a good candidate for the seat.
Cons are pretty stodgy. A lot of them will vote for either Tiahrt or Moran and refuse to vote if their candidate does not win.
I’d much rather see Godzilla vs. that big Moth. Both would be more qualified.
Todd Tiahrt for US Senate? Tiahrt is all about incumbency. There’s no way that Tiahrt could ever get elected to a state wide office. There’s no way that he will ever risk leaving the House of Representtives either even if he is in the powerless minority for the next 10 years.
Did anyone notice the old “Welcome to Kansas” sign in the story? We wasted a lot of tax dollars on the new signs, but I liked these old ones much better.
