Santa declares there is no reindeer induced Global Warming

Dieting on a special feed of North Pole trail mix, the reindeer that pull the sled on Christmas eve do not emit flatulence.

Santa was quoted as saying, “Nothing ruins a housetop visit than having eight tiny reindeer farting while your putting packages under a tree.”

Santa also refused to back down on the custom of passing out of lump of coal for the bad boys and girls.

Reports that the North Pole workshop is cutting back due to the global financial crisis were exaggerated according to elf spokesman T.R. Ash. Ash stated the North Pole economy is strong, although some may get ‘Tom Tom’ in their stockings rather than the more expensive ‘Garmin.’ Either way Ash declared that there will be no loss of quality in gifts and children should still set out milk and cookies on Christmas Eve.

    COOLING ON GLOBAL WARMING

    By BENNY PEISER

Participants at last week’s United Nations climate conference in Poznan, Poland, were taken aback by a world seemingly turned upside-down. The traditional villains and heroes of the international climate narrative, the wicked U.S. and the noble European Union, had unexpectedly swapped roles. For once, it was the EU that was criticized for backpedalling on its CO2 targets while Europe’s climate nemesis, the U.S., found itself commended for electing an environmental champion as president.

The wrangle over the EU’s controversial climate package at a separate summit in Brussels wrong-footed the world’s green bureaucracy. The EU climate deal was diluted beyond recognition. Instead of standing by plans to cut CO2 emissions by 20% below 1990 levels by 2020, the actual reductions might be as trivial as 4% if all exemptions are factored in.

The Brussels summit symbolizes a turning point. The watered-down climate deal epitomizes the onset of a cooling period in Europe’s hitherto overheated climate debate. It may lead eventually to the complete abandonment of the unilateral climate agenda that has shaped Europe’s green philosophy for nearly 20 years.

The reasons for the changing political atmosphere in Europe are manifold. First, the global economic crisis has demoted green policies nearer to the bottom of the political agenda. Saving the economy and creating jobs take priority now.

Second, disillusionment with the failed Kyoto Protocol has turned utopian thinking into sobriety. After all, most of the Kyoto signatories failed to reduce their CO2 emissions during the last 10 years. There are also growing doubts about the long-term viability of the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme. The price of carbon credits has collapsed as a result of the financial crisis. The drop in demand and the recession are likely to depress carbon prices for years to come. As a result, the effectiveness of the extremely volatile scheme is increasingly questioned.

Third, a number of countries have experienced a political backlash over their renewable energy schemes. Tens of billions of euros of taxpayers’ money have been pumped into projects that depend on endless government handouts. Each of the 35,000 solar jobs in Germany, for instance, is subsidized to the tune of _130,000. According to estimates by the Rhine-Westphalia Institute for Economic Research, green subsidies will cost German electricity consumers nearly _27 billion in the next two years.

Perhaps even more important is the growing realization that the warming trend of the late 20th century has, for the last 10 years or so, essentially come to a temporary halt. The data collected by international meteorological offices confirm this. This most peculiar fact is rarely mentioned in policy debates, but it certainly provides decision makers with a vital respite to reconsider their climate policy options.

Above all, Europe’s politicians have recognized that green taxes have turned into liabilities that may undermine economic stability and their chances of re-election. As German radio Deutsche Welle put it last week: “With the recession tightening its grip on the German economy, [Chancellor Angela] Merkel is betting that job reassurance is more important to the average worker than being a pioneer in tackling climate change.”

Nowhere has the fundamental change of the political landscape been more pronounced and less expected than in Germany. For more than 20 years, Europe’s economic powerhouse has been the major bastion of green politics.

In the 1990s, Angela Merkel steered and implemented Europe’s Kyoto policy as Germany’s first environment minister. Now serving as chancellor, she was hailed as Europe’s climate savior after playing host to last year’s G-8 summit in Heiligendamm. Only 18 months later, however, she no longer wears a halo. As a result of a concerted campaign by Germany’s heavy industry, as well as growing opposition from within her Christian Democratic party, Mrs. Merkel has been forced to abandon her green principles and image.

The deepening economic crisis seems to transform the mood of the German public. Next year’s general election looms large, and voters right now are worried about the economy and jobs, and not green issues. In early December, more than 10,000 angry metal workers and trade unionists — most of them from Germany — protested outside the European Parliament in Brussels against the EU’s climate policy, which they fear will increase unemployment.

For many international observers, the ease with which Mrs. Merkel overturned her celebrated climate policy has come as a shock. But she was almost the last member of her Christian Democratic party willing to accept that a change in strategy was necessary given the immense costs of the EU’s original climate plans. In fact, her party demanded that Mrs. Merkel veto the climate package if German industry did not receive an exemption from the Emissions Trading Scheme’s auctioning of carbon credits. The exemption was duly granted.

Perhaps the most critical factor for Mrs. Merkel’s almost unchallenged about-face is the vanishing strength of the Social Democratic Party, whose members were once among the most forceful climate alarmists. Mrs. Merkel’s junior coalition partner has lost much of its support in recent years. And amid growing fears of a deepening recession, there are also signs of a split within the party on climate and energy issues.

At the forefront of the left-wing opposition to the EU’s climate policy has been EU Industry Commissioner Gnter Verheugen. The German Social Democrat has been arguing throughout the year that the climate targets should only be accepted if “truly cost-effective solutions” could be found. Other prominent dissenters in his party include Hubertus Schmoldt, the head of the mining, chemical and energy industrial union, who has recently called for a two-year postponement of the climate package.

In part as a result of German — as well as Italian and Polish — objections, Europe’s climate package did not survive in its original form. The inclusion of a revision clause, pushed by Italy, is particularly significant as it makes the EU’s climate targets conditional on the outcome of international climate talks. If the U.N.’s Copenhagen conference in 2009 fails to seal a post-Kyoto deal, it is as good as certain that some of the EU’s targets will be further cut. By linking its decisions to those of the rest of the world, Europe has begun to act as a more rational player on the stage of international climate diplomacy.

Instead of yielding to the siren calls of climate alarmists, European governments would be well advised to focus their attention on developing pragmatic policies capable of safeguarding their industries, labor forces and environment at the same time.

Well, gentle people, it seems that Ann Coulter has mysteriously recovered from her ‘broken jaw’. I’ve seen her on several TV shows lately promoting her new book.

When you slobbering, left-wing nuts are so incredibly wrong about something and gleefully go on for days about something that has absolutely no basis in fact, doesn’t it make you maybe doubt some of your other incredibly stupid beliefs?

I guess not, you elected little Barry in spite of facts that he was a Chicago crook based on little more than ‘hope’.

    GUILTY:

Liberal “Victims” and Their Assault on America

“Liberals seem to have hit upon a reverse Christ story as their belief system. He suffered and died for our sins; liberals make the rest of us suffer for sins we didn’t commit.”
    - Ann Coulter, Guilty

For a limited time—and only at Shop.WND.com—get an autographed copy of Ann Coulter’s sure-to-be bestseller, Guilty: Liberal “Victims” and Their Assault on America, when you pre-order today for delivery on (or around) December 30—its publisher-embargoed release date.

In Guilty, Ann Coulter explodes the myth of liberal victimization to reveal that when it comes to bullying, no one outdoes the Left.

Citing case after case, ranging from the hilariously absurd to the shockingly vicious, Coulter dissects these so-called victims who are invariably the oppressors. For instance:

    * Single mothers: Getting pregnant isn’t like catching the flu. There are volitional acts involved—someone else explain it to Dennis Kucinich. By this purposeful act, single mothers cause irreparable harm to other human beings—their own children—as countless studies on the subject make clear.

    * The myth of the Republican Attack Machine: The most amazing thing liberals have done is create the myth of a compliant right-wing media with Republicans badgering baffled reporters into attacking Democrats. It’s so mad, it’s brilliant. It’s one kind of lie to say the Holocaust occurred when the Swedes killed the Jews. But it’s another kind of lie entirely to say the Holocaust occurred when the Jews killed the Nazis.

    * “Brave” liberals: In addition to being beautiful, compassionate tribunes of the downtrodden, liberals are brave. I know that because they’re always telling me how brave they are. Why, five nights a week, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann courageously books guests who completely agree with him. It doesn’t get much braver than that.

    * Obambi’s luck: While B. Hussein Obama piously condemned attacks on candidates’ families, his media and campaign surrogates ripped open the court-sealed divorce records of his two principal opponents in his Senate race in Illinois.

    * The offenders are offended!: Republican senator George Allen’s career was destroyed when he made a joking remark to a privileged Indian American harassing him at campaign stops. When did rich kids become a new protected category that must be shielded from words that are insulting in other languages? How did Sidarth become a specially anointed victim? What did we ever do to India? And why didn’t we ever hear about the far more offensive anti-Semitic flyers of Allen’s opponent Jim Webb?

One essential and recurring truth about self-righteous liberals, says Coulter, is that “they viciously attack all while wailing that they are the true victims.” With Guilty—a mordantly witty and shockingly specific catalog of offenses that liberals would rather we ignore and forget—Ann Coulter presents exhibits A through Z.

Thanks HLP for bringing that up.
I think it rather strange [sarcasm]that the dimlibs would not say anything about being wrong. Maybe it is because they are so often.

I remember being jumped all over by my detractors who showed obvious glee because I brought the article to the blog about the McCain campaign worker who lied, claiming she had been attacked, when it turned out she lied. At least I had Drudge and the local TV news articles to reference who made no mention of doubt about the validity of her story.
Seems to me they are hypocrites all.

Twas the night before Christmas and the presses were quiet,
Not a offset was humming and journalists were off their diet,

Gulping down Christmas cheer and confections galore,
Bah humbug saith Brownlee, these parties are a bore!”

Rhonda was busy decorating with spangle and bow,
Windows and Christamas decorations set the press room a glow.

We have mended our fences and made the best of our day!
We eve help pushed anti-coal legislation and those Casinos won’t stay!

Despite what the public thinks we do not have tail and horn.
Nor do we publish fictional accounts or political porn!

What we do here at the Eagle we’re sure Santa will approve,
Heck we even got Randy Scholfield to move!

We bled out the BTK story as much as we could,
It had to come to an end, we knew that it would.

It was a grand journalistic experience and a writers delight.
Of a bogyman reign of terror and everyone’s nightmare fright.

We’ve supported the Governor even when she didn’t want it.
And affixed the blame to others even though they hadn’t done it.

It’s fun to point the finger with journalistic freedom of press.
It saves on attorney fees and avoids a rock throwing mess.

We’re unsure of the future and uneasy what’s coming so near,
As financial markets fail and brings an uncertain New Year.

We do know that we’ll still be around,
Because the wind will blow and farmers still till the ground.

We have agriculture news as a never ending backup news source,
If that doesn’t work we can beat another political dead horse.

Brownlee was caught on camera wearing the hat of an elf,
He cried in protest and said it was taking space on the shelf!

I just moved it to make room for a new pleasure,
A brand new desktop server with my trusty ruler I must measure!

It’s faster and more efficient than the ones we have now,
I had to make room and that hat had to move right now!

“But Brownlee”, Rhonda said in quiet observation,
Your hat has “Phillip” embroidered on it, this is my observation.”

“I’ve been setup!” cried Brownlee, this is sabotage!
Rhonda laughed and pointed out matching elf boots with a bright red corsage.

Brownlee skulked from newsroom with network cables in hand,
Bah humbug! Brownlee protested, “Eat stale cookies and pound sand!”

“Don’t be hateful,” stated Rhonda, we knew all along
Because of the purchase order on your desk you left out way too long.

“I guess I couldn’t hide it with experts at investigative reporting,
I apologize for my temper and my anti-holiday retorting.”

“We knew all along” Rhonda said “smiling bright with zest,”
Oh btw, Crowson left a cartoon on your desk.”

“That bastard!” cried Brownlee, “he’s got me drawn in full elf uniform!”
And is nothing sacred around here I think it’s time for reform!

Brownlee promptly hung up his sign of Obama for “Change.”
“Now if only I can get my desk top unmessy by auto arrange.”

“Not to worry,” said Rhonda, “some boxes will take care of that.”
Perhaps a bulldozer or two and maybe a storage flat.

“Very funny,” cried Brownlee, “I’ll not reform, my mess I adore,”
And this insolent behavior, nevermore nevermore!”

    “Good grief,” said Rhonda
    “Good moodly,” snorted Brownlee

To all a Merry Christmas and to all a good night!

    FOUNDING FATHER CORNER

The popular culture today says that America was founded as a secular nation. That religion was intended to be excluded from public life. T

Here is another quote setting out in their own words, what a founding father thought about the importance of religion and morality had to our country.

    Hmm, lemme see –

Ann Coulter, despite having a new book out, goes off the media radar for about six weeks. Three or four weeks into her exile, word gets out she broke her jaw and had it wired shut. Two or three weeks later she returns to Faux Noise Channel to plug her book and he jaws aren’t wired shot.

That’s not proof of “libs” being wrong. It takes about six weeks for a broken bone to heal. I slipped and fell on the ice last winder and cracked my wrist. It was in a brace/cast thingy for about three weeks. The absence of that cast today in no way “proves” it wasn’t broken and subsequently healed.

    GOV’S TAX & SPEND SHOCKER
ADDS 137 HIKES WHILE INCREASING BUDGET TO $121B

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/12172008/news/regionalnews/govs_tax__spend_shocker_144629.htm

“ALBANY – Gov. Paterson yesterday socked New Yorkers with a mind-boggling 137 proposed new and hiked taxes on everything from beer to cab rides to iTunes downloads and movie tickets.
The doomsday, $121.1 billion plan represents the biggest tax hike in state history and slashes services across the board – while still increasing spending by $1.4 billion….
“Unfortunately, we have lived beyond our means,” the Democratic governor said. “We have to recognize that we’ve made too many promises and unfortunately asked for too few sacrifices. We are going to have to change our culture as we know it.”

“lived beyond our means’, ‘change our culture as we know it’”. Well oh my, the most liberal Democratic state in the country is now having to ‘pay the piper’ for their extreme largesse government spending. Imagine that!

When will the liberals ever learn, and now we have one the most liberal coming into the Presidency. God help us all.

    Here’s what’s interesting….look who he’s going after.
“The pain in this budget seems to be strictly for the middle class,” said Sen. Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn). “You name it, [Paterson] taxes it. If anybody’s contemplating leaving the state of New York, this should push them over the top.”
“The governor has shifted the unbearable burden of closing the budget gap onto the shoulders of school children while sparing the wealthiest New Yorkers.”

Heads up liberals, excessive government spending and excessive taxes don’t just hit the wealthy.

“In the Spring of 2003, Stephen McIntyre requested the MBH98 data set from Mann. He is not a scientist or an economist, he was just curious how the graph was made and wanted to see if the raw data looked like hockey sticks too. After some delay Mann arranged provision of a file which was represented as the one used for MBH98. One of the first things Stephen discovered was that the PCs used in MBH98 could not be replicated. In the process of looking up all the data sources and re-building Mann’s data set from scratch, Steve discovered a quite a few errors concerning location labels, use of obsolete editions, unexplained truncations of available series, etc.

    Source: climatechangeissues.com

In his initial response, Mann argued that we had studied the wrong data set—in other words that the one he provided had mistakes in it and we ought instead to have used one in a newly-identified FTP archive at his university. Over the next month we examined his FTP archive and discovered that, in fact, it corresponded almost exactly to the file we had originally been working with. However it differed in important ways from the description of the data set in the original Nature paper. We supplied a list of these discrepancies to Nature and after their own investigation they ordered a Corrigendum from Mann et al.

    Source: climatechangeissues.com

Mann also objected that we did not exactly replicate his computational steps or sequence of proxy rosters. No one had ever replicated his results, and we now know others had tried but were also unsuccessful. To date we are the closest anyone has been able to come in print. We were not bothered by Mann’s response on this point, but it did seem pointless to differ over trivial issues. So we requested his computational code to eliminate these easily-resolved differences. To our surprise he refused to supply his computer code, a stance he maintains to today.

    Source: climatechangeissues.com

As for the proxy sequence, in building his PCs it turns out he had spliced together a number of different series in order to handle segments with missing data in the earliest part of the analysis. This was not explained in his Nature paper so Steve had not implemented it in the emulation program. We requested identification of the splicing sequence, which Mann refused to provide …

News Flash! Marijuana Still Not Eradicated!!
    by Bruce Mirken
Well, the federal government’s National Drug Threat Assessment for 2009 is out, and — who’dda thunk it? — “Marijuana availability is high throughout the United States.” This is despite record seizures of marijuana plants in 2007, as well as an all-time record number of marijuana arrests, over 872,000. Indoor cultivation — often in converted homes and other dubious locations — has increased “because of high profit margins and seemingly reduced risk of law enforcement detection.”
This year’s Monitoring the Future survey confirmed marijuana remains widely available, with 83.9% of high school seniors saying that marijuana is “easy to get” — a figure that remains virtually unchanged since the survey began in 1975.
The western U.S. remains a hotbed of domestic marijuana cultivation, yet the Drug Threat Assessment reports that only 2% of law enforcement in the Southwest region(stretching from Southern California to Texas and Oklahoma) report marijuana as being the greatest drug threat in their area, while in the Pacific region (Northern and Central California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Nevada) only 1.1% see marijuana as the greatest threat.

“Whether such “mistakes” are made in genuine error or are part of a politicized push for man-made global warming to be universally accepted, and the evidence clearly suggests that latter is the case, the fact is that we can no longer tolerate the cry that “the debate is over” on man-made global warming in light of such gargantuan falsehoods.

Likewise, the push for carbon emissions to be reduced by 80 per cent or more, a figure that would completely cripple western economies and lower living standards to a near third world level, can no longer be accepted as a reasonable course of action now that the primary authority on man-made global warming, the UN IPCC, has been proven to be using fraudulent data to make its case.

On Monday, NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), run by Al Gore’s chief scientific ally, Dr James Hansen, announced that last month was the hottest October on record.

“This was startling,” reports the London Telegraph. “Across the world there were reports of unseasonal snow and plummeting temperatures last month, from the American Great Plains to China, and from the Alps to New Zealand. China’s official news agency reported that Tibet had suffered its “worst snowstorm ever”. In the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration registered 63 local snowfall records and 115 lowest-ever temperatures for the month, and ranked it as only the 70th-warmest October in 114 years.”

It soon came to light that the data produced by NASA to make the claim, and in particular temperature records covering large areas of Russia, was merely carried over from the previous month. NASA had used temperature records from the naturally hotter month of September and claimed they represented temperature figures in October.

When NASA was confronted with this glaring error, they then attempted to compensate for the lower temperatures in Russia by claiming they had discovered a new “hotspot” in the Arctic, despite satellite imagery clearly showing that Arctic sea ice had massively expanded its coverage by 30 per cent, an area the size of Germany, since summer 2007.

The figures published by Dr Hansen’s institute are one of the primary sets of data used by the IPCC to promote its case for man-made global warming and they are widely quoted because they consistently show higher temperatures than other figures.

“Yet last week’s latest episode is far from the first time Dr Hansen’s methodology has been called in question,” reports the Telegraph. “In 2007 he was forced by Mr Watts and Mr McIntyre to revise his published figures for US surface temperatures, to show that the hottest decade of the 20th century was not the 1990s, as he had claimed, but the 1930s.”

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the IPCC and a close ally of Hansen, also raised eyebrows recently during a presentation in Australia, during which he claimed that global temperatures have recently been rising “very much faster” than ever as he cited a graph showing purported temperature increases over the last decade. In fact, as even the vast majority of man-made global warming advocates will concede, temperatures since 1998 have moved sideways and over the last 18 months they have clearly begun a downward trend.

    Fat Bonuses For Bail-Out Bankers

    12:26pm UK, Wednesday December 17, 2008
Workers at Goldman Sachs are sharing £1.7bn in bonuses – even after the US pumped cash into the bank to rescue it from the credit crisis.

The bank revealed the figure, worth around £55,000 per employee, as it posted its first quarterly loss since becoming a public company in 1999.

A spokesman for the bank, which recently received a $10bn handout from the US government, said the bonus pot totalled £1.67bn.

The chief executive and six senior colleagues will not take a share, having agreed to give up the perk.

The US-based firm, which switched from being an investment bank to a savings bank in September, lost £1.36bn in the final quarter of this year.

Goldman Sachs boss Lloyd Blankfein said its recent performance reflected “extraordinarily difficult operating conditions”.

He added: “While our quarterly performance obviously didn’t meet our expectations, Goldman Sachs remained profitable during one of the most challenging years in our industry’s history.”

Other top companies badly affected by the US mortgage crisis are expected to announce similarly poor results before Christmas.

“Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand. – John Adams June 21, 1776.”

Adams was responding to a letter from Zabdiel Adams, which questioned the moral wisdom of declaring independence. It had nothing to do with what was decided in Philadelphia, let alone the Bill of Rights.

    Read the full letter here.

Adams had a lot of interesting views, but when he became president he violently suppressed dissent via the Alien and Sedition Acts.

The point he was making though, is that a constitution must be based on “pure virtue.” Perhaps Adams believed that virtue and religious faith were the same thing (I’m not really a scholar of the man), but if so he lost that argument in Philadelphia (Ben Franklin had some interesting things to say about virtue, as opposed to religion, in his autobiography).

Apparently Outie’s persistent point (near as I can tell) is that our Constitution is based on religious faith, a dumb argument that has no basis in historical fact. If Adams wanted that to be the case (and this quote doesn’t tell us either way), he should have attended the Convention in Philadelphia.

“John Adams also did not attend, being abroad in Europe. . .”

“Throw the annual data into one graph. The results are startling. The GISS calculated temperature anomaly is far greater than all others”
    ———————-

    SolDevVB,

Do you still NOT understand that the temperature anomaly data sets use different references, and should not be directly compared?

    That’s very basic statistics.

    http://tamino.wordpress.com/2008/03/02/whats-up-with-that/
“We can’t directly compare the numbers in a meaningful way without compensating for the difference in reference. Otherwise, it’s just like measuring my height in inches above Shaquille O’Neill (which makes the number quite negative) while measuring a newborn child’s height in inches above the ground (which makes the number certainly positive), noting that the infant’s number is greater, and concluding that the newborn is taller than I am.
If we fail to compensate for the different reference, then we expect that the GISS numbers will be highest, the HadCRU numbers next, and the satellite data lowest. And that’s exactly what we observe.”

Actually it was the New York Post that first published the story on Ann Coulter’s broken jaw that needed to be wired shut.

Ms. Coulter’s speaking engagement at this college had to be cancelled because of her broken jaw:

It’s not bad until you get about halfway and the road has very slippery basaltic rock and extremely narrow with sheer drops.

Must admit I was gassed from the experience and it took about five hours.

I was so sore the next day, I could hardly walk around Pompeii. And that was when I was running five to six miles a day too.

Here’s the reality after you cut out ReguLIAR’s “embellishments”:

Climbing the volcano is the best way to understand its significance and power. Fortunately, it is easy to reach the base of the volcano. Hiking up to the summit is more difficult, but most people in good health will have little trouble reaching the top of Mount Vesuvius. The hike up the volcano has a fourteen percent grade and is on a dusty, graveled trail. The round trip will take two to three hours.

A poster left this on this blog–

My 4 year old easily managed the climb

    And another said–

If you have the time, it is surprisingly easy to get to the top of this world-famous volcano.

    http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g187785-d195494-Reviews-Mount_Vesuvius-Naples_Campania.html

Unfortunately for ReguLIAR, he lied about something which can be proven true or false. He should stick to his “I got an award for working on Christmas Day” or “I married a Jewess” or similar nonsense.

Then we could only suspect that he’s lying, instead of proving it outright, as above.

Sorry you’ve never been to Vesuvius or have seen wonderful sites of antiquity like Pompeii. Taking with learned archaeologists and geologists made that trip quite enjoyable.

BTW, we also went to other places on the trip for pure interest and curiosity; Pisa, Rome, Venice, the Italian Alps and many other stops.

BTW, the climb you are talking about with the 4 year old boy is from the bus parking lot, not from the valley below. The bus parking lot is about three fourths the way up.

If you understand anomolies, the base period is irrelevant.

And I’d guess that GIS uses a base period of 1951-1980 because their first publication was in 1981 — compare that year, and future years, to the most recent 30-year period.

Yep, geology class through the University of Maryland which offers courses to GI’s and civilians in the European theater of military operations. It was an enjoyable course taught by an Austrian born PhD who had worked for I believe Texaco in the states.

I also took a German history course that had tours of the battlefields and places like the Maginot line (underground bunkers) which was quite fascinating. There were several courses like that offered if you had the time.

If you have ever been to Vesuvius, you would know that bus parking lot is below the summit by quite a distance and it requires a short climb to visit the volcano opening. They used to let people climb down into the volcano, but there were too many falling accidents. The bus parking lot is where your four year old you mentioned departed.

It was an American Express tour booked by the University of Maryland (discounted for students) and military members, so I got both discounts. :)

The funniest part of that trip was carrying around the huge Italian Lira. Those paper bills were huge!

Most had calculators as the exchange rate in Italy was like 10,000 Lira to one dollar. Paying for a meal startled some people when they saw the bill. :)

You would have enjoyed Pompeii as well. We got lucky and ran into a British Archaeologist who had been working Pompeii for like twenty years. That man knew everything there was to know about that ancient city. It was remarkable how huge the city of Pompeii was.

Most ruins are small, but this excavation was considerable in size and had many buildings exposed. The preservation of wall murals and ancient statues/ carvings was remarkably well preserved.

Not exactly, the bus dropped people off who wanted to take the ferry to Corsica and they were supposed to be at the meeting place at a specific time to continue on to Pompeii. These dolts who got drunk in Corsica missed the ferry back.

Besides, we had to go back that way to continue the trip back to Germany.

The last leg of the trip went through Austria which was a bit disappointing as we had run out of time and basically did a drive by of Austrian sites.

The tour was a split tour. Some of us stayed in Florence and part went to Corsica on an packaged tour that cost extra. I chose to visit Florence and its fine architecture, while others opted to visit Corsica. After spending the night in Florence, we left to pick up the folks on the Corsica trip and they weren’t there. The tour guide was a strict German pragmatist and instructed the German bus driver to carry on with the tour, which he did.

Those folks missed quite a bit of the tour, not to mention they had to pay for an additional night of hotel and eating costs.

My wife and I visited Italy a few years ago. We spent three weeks with no set itinery, reservations or plans.

We had a hotel reserved for the first and last day in Rome and Eurorail pass. Travelled around with only one back pack between us. Great times, great adventure!
    ——————–
Yep, Eurorail is the way to go. I learned my lesson on bus tours. They were too packaged and too rushed.

    It’s the wind stupid
A science blogger named Tamino, in a post he made here, challenged me to “explain it or shut up” related to the loss of northern hemisphere Arctic ice this season which he claimed was …” undeniable, that it’s not natural variation” in contrast to the southern hemisphere Antarctic setting a new record for ice extent. While I suspect that sea ice is not his specialty, nor is it mine, I will bring some things to the attention of my readers available from literature.

Just last Monday, NASA was quietly issuing a press release explaining why Arctic sea ice loss was so great this year. (h/t Douglas Hoyt).

From the release: A team led by Son Nghiem of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., studied trends in Arctic perennial ice cover by combining data from NASA’s Quick Scatterometer (QuikScat) satellite with a computing model based on observations of sea ice drift from the International Arctic Buoy Programme. QuikScat can identify and map different classes of sea ice, including older, thicker perennial ice and younger, thinner seasonal ice.

“Unusual atmospheric conditions set up wind patterns that compressed the sea ice, loaded it into the Transpolar Drift Stream and then sped its flow out of the Arctic,” said Son Nghiem of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and leader of the study. When that sea ice reached lower latitudes, it rapidly melted in the warmer waters.

In simpler terms, polar wind patterns changed and blew sea ice further south to warmer waters than it normally would. Sea ice can easily be wind driven.

I wonder if that’s the same mechanism that caused loss of Arctic sea ice in the 1920-30’s?

The Arctic is almost as warm now as it was seventy years ago. Unsurprisingly, Arctic ice has diminished. But, as Polyakov et al.show, the long-term changes are “generally statistically insignificant”. But there’s more ice in Antarctica now. It seems that points more to a natural, cyclical variation on a global scale when one pole diminishes while another gains.

There are a lot of mountains that have easy “tourist” trails, but you would have to do a more difficult alternate route in order to conduct fieldwork/observe the natural landscape/escape from the crowd.

Also, I’ve completed fieldwork in less than 5 hours, easily.

    Good morning!

As I’m getting all ready for 25 degree weather and real Christmas trees this weekend (it’s hard to get into the Christmas spirit surrounded by rain and palm trees!), I wanted to pose an open-ended question for the Christians on this blog.

Where does “humility” fit into a Christian lifestyle?

The scientists observed less perennial ice cover in March 2007 than ever before, with the thick ice confined to the Arctic Ocean north of Canada. Consequently, the Arctic Ocean was dominated by thinner seasonal ice that melts faster. This ice is more easily compressed and responds more quickly to being pushed out of the Arctic by winds. Those thinner seasonal ice conditions facilitated the ice loss, leading to this year’s record low amount of total Arctic sea ice“.

Most geology field trips require one to look at the bigger geologic setting which usually means lots of driving/hiking to different outcrops or sites. Fieldwork can mean anything. I can perform field work in less than 30 minutes depending on the job at hand. We were talking about field trips in an educational setting.

I did a dig near Alzey-Weinheim in Germany in the same class looking for sea fossils. Found one sea cow vertebrae and a few dozen shark teeth I think from the Devonian era. That was done in about six hours, driving time included.

West Germany at the time was smaller than Oregon,so it didn’t take much to drive it’s breadth and width, especially by high speed autobahn. :)

    Global Warming’s Last Gasp

You folks in Fargo, N.D., who think you are shivering because it’s 11 degrees below zero are badly mistaken – according to the precious computer models global warming alarmists use, it can’t be that bitterly cold.

Their models show conclusively that the world is heating up. How can it be minus 11 degrees in Fargo? The models never showed it would get cooler.

Well it is, but they prefer to ignore such facts that might poke a large hole in their pet global warming theory that keeps their bank accounts fat and healthy with the grants that fund their researching of a scientific scam.

In the midst of an early winter vicious cold front that has plunged large areas of the northern United States into sub-zero temperatures, an Associated Press journalist has penned an absurd report warning that the world is in the process of being spit roasted by the alleged warming of the planet.

In a hysterical report, “Obama left with little time to curb global warming,” AP writer Seth Borenstein warned that global warming “is a ticking time bomb that President-elect Barack Obama can’t avoid.”

He went on to repeat a series of discredited claims that allegedly prove that the earth is rapidly heating dangerously, claiming such nonsense that “Since Clinton’s inauguration, summer Arctic sea ice has lost the equivalent of Alaska, California, and Texas. The 10 hottest years on record have occurred since Clinton’s second inauguration. Global warming is accelerating. Time is close to running out, and Obama knows it.” NewsBusters’ associate editor, Noel Sheppard, rounded up comments by top climate experts disproving Borenstein’s claims.

“How can this guy call himself a `science reporter?’” asked David Deming of the University of Oklahoma. “He is perhaps the worst propagandist in all the media, and that’s stating s omething. In his latest screed, he screams: ‘global warming is accelerating.’

“How then does he explain the fact that the mean global temperature [as measured by satellite] is the same as it was in 1980? How can global warming be ‘accelerating’ when the last two years have seen dramatic cooling? Is this guy totally removed from all reality? He completely ignores any evidence contrary to his personal beliefs, and twists everything to meet his preconceived notions.”

Richard S. Courtney, a U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) expert reviewer and a U.K.-based climate and atmospheric science consultant snorted, “Rubbish! Global warming is not ‘accelerating.’ Global warming has stopped. There has been no statistically significant rise in [mean global temperature or MGT] since 1995 and MGT has fallen since 1998 . . .

“Arctic ice advances and recedes over decades. 2007 saw a minimum in Arctic ice cover in the short period that it has been monitored using satellites. But 2008 saw the most rapid growth in Arctic ice cover in that same period and Arctic ice cover is now back to the average it has had in the period.

“Also, 95 percent of polar ice is in the Antarctic, and Antarctic ice is increasing. Nobody can know if the recent halt to global warming is temporary, permanent, or the start of a new warming or cooling phase. But it is certain that anybody who proclaims that20′Global warming is accelerating’ is a liar, a fool, or both.”

James A. Peden, atmospheric physicist formerly of the Space Research and Coordination Center in Pittsburgh, wrote, “The Great Global Warming Hoax appears to be a collaborative effort between the world’s incompetent scientists and the world’s scientifically illiterate journalists.

“Science Illiterates like Borenstein are the Chicken Littles of the 21st Century, spreading climate change poppycock like bread crumbs in the forest. The crumbs, hopefully, will lead them to a paycheck at the end of the week from their similarly science-illiterate employers. Well, the lower-I.Q. portion of the population has to eat, too.”

Added Chemical Scientist Dr. Brian G. Valentine of the U.S. Department of Energy who has studied computational fluid dynamics and modeling of complex systems, “The world hasn’t ‘warmed’ in a dozen years, and over the past year not even [NASA's] Jim Hansen and his magic bag of tricks can make it appear we’re all getting ‘warmer.’”

Hans Schreuder, analytical chemist and webmaster of http://www.ilovemycarbondioxide.com in Ipswich, England, explained, “One further critical aspect of global warming alarmists that is so fiercely debated by all is the “climate forcing” property of carbon dioxide . . . The climate forcing ability of carbon dioxide equals exactly zero – not 4 degrees C, not 1 degree C, not even 0.0001 degr ee C. Just plain zero. Even the much heralded graphic indicating that the first 20ppmv of carbon dioxide makes a difference to the air temperature that is much greater than any subsequent increase in concentration is a useless bit of info based on laboratory tests that have absolutely no relation to the open atmosphere.

“There exists not one single laboratory test on climate that can be extrapolated to mimic the open atmosphere, and that includes the most advanced computers that in any case treat the earth as a flat disc with a 24 hour haze of solar radiation – about as far removed from reality as is possible.”

And Don J. Easterbrook, Ph.D., emeritus professor of geology at Western Washington University, asked, “What does it take to ignore 10 years of global cooling, sharply declining temperatures the last couple of years, record setting lack of sun spots . . . failure of computer models to predict real climate, predictable warming and cooling climates for the past 500 years. The answer is really quite simple – just follow the money!”

Fair enough, I’ve never done any geologic field surveys.

Anyway, the reason I asked my question is because from a lot of my readings, my church places a high importance on humility. I know this means we’re supposed to be humble before God and everything and not presume to judge for him, etc..

But to practice humility in ALL areas of your life? I mean, what if you are really better than everyone :D

Hank, I always assumed it meant humility before God and in all theological matters: not presuming that you know all the secrets of the Bible and that your interpretation is the only correct one. I also understood it to mean that it is not man’s place to judge others who might have a different faith.

But now I’m coming to understand it means humility before everyone. Like sitting here posting about how I’m right and everyone is wrong is sort of going against that.

I guess what I’m wondering is how you fit in the simple fact that some of us have more knowledge about stuff than others do (maybe due to our life experiences, education, occupation, etc.) and still hold fast to that value? If I, as a cat person, presume to tell you how to raise sheepdogs by giving them chocolate and onions, are you failing to be humble by telling me I’m wrong and you know more? Are you supposed to keep quiet and nod because that’s the humble thing to do?

Or perhaps all of this waxing philosophical means I just really, really need a vacation.

There’s a verse in the Bible, I’ll paraphrase, “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

As I’ve been told, a needle were the low arched gates to a walled city. In order for the camel to get through the ‘needle’ it must get down on its knees and crawl through. Not knowing about camels, this would be a tricky feat.

So the rich man, like the camel example, must humble themselves before they can enter their respective destinations.

I guess you could say I am a loner
A cowboy all locked up and proud
Well I could have lots of friends if I wanted
But then I wouldn’t stand out in a crowd
Some folks say that I’m egotistical
Hell I don’t even know what that means

Was an odd occurrence on that trip. One of the workers had inadvertently left an out third reich autobahn sign out leaning against the wall of one of the quarry ’stone-cutting’ buildings. It was complete with a swastika. It’s illegal in Germany or was, to post the swastika in public and the owner could have been fined heavily.

Had loads of fun in that class. The professors tests were tough as they were all essay and he marked off for grammar and spelling. :/

    Twelve Ways To Humble Yourself

    1. Routinely confess your sin to God. (Luke 18:9-14) All of us sin and fall short of the glory of God. However, too few of us have a routine practice of rigorous self-honesty examination. Weekly, even daily, review of our heart and behavior, coupled with confession to God, is an essential practice of humility.

    2. Acknowledge your sin to others. (James 3:2, James 5:16) Humility before God is not complete unless there is also humility before man. A true test of our willingness to humble ourselves is being willing to share with others the weaknesses we confess to God. Wisdom, however, dictates that we do so with others that we trust.

    3. Take wrong patiently. (1 Peter 3:8-17) This has been a difficult one for me. When something is unjust I want to react and rectify it. However, patiently responding to the unjust accusations and actions of others demonstrates our strength of godly character and provides an opportunity to put on humility.

    4. Actively submit to authority…the good and the bad! (1 Peter 2:18) Our culture does not value submission; rather it promotes individualism. How purposely and actively do you work on submission to those whom God has placed as authorities in your life? Doing so is a good way to humble yourself.

    5. Receive correction and feedback from others graciously. (Proverbs 10:17, 12:1) In the Phoenix area, a local East valley pastor was noted for graciously receiving any negative feedback or correction offered. He would simply say “thank you for caring enough to share that with me, I will pray about it and get back to you.” Look for the kernel of truth in what people offer you, even if it comes from a dubious source. Always pray, “Lord, what are you trying to show me through this?”

    6. Accept a lowly place. (Proverbs 25:6,7) If you find yourself wanting to sit at the head table, wanting others to recognize your contribution or become offended when others are honored or chosen, then pride is present. Purpose to support others being recognized, rather than you. Accept and look for the lowly place; it is the place of humility.

    7. Purposely associate with people of lower state than you. (Luke 7:36-39) Jesus was derided by the Pharisees for socializing with the poor and those of lowly state. Our culture is very status conscious and people naturally want to socialize upward. Resist the temptation of being partial to those with status or wealth.

    8. Choose to serve others. (Philippians 1:1, 2 Corinthians 4:5, Matthew 23:11) When we serve others, we are serving God’s purposes in their lives. Doing so reduces our focus on ourselves and builds the Kingdom of God instead of the Kingdom of self. When serving another costs us nothing, we should question whether or not it is really servanthood.

    9. Be quick to forgive. (Matthew 18: 21-35) Forgiveness is possibly one of the greatest acts of humility we can do. To forgive is to acknowledge a wrong that has been done us and also to further release our right of repayment for the wrong. Forgiveness is denial of self. Forgiveness is not insisting on our way and our justice.

    10. Cultivate a grateful heart. (1 Thessalonians 5:18) The more we develop an attitude of gratitude for the gift of salvation and life He has given us, the more true our perspective of self. A grateful heart is a humble heart.

    11. Purpose to speak well of others. (Ephesians 4:31-32) Saying negative things about others puts them “one down” and us “one up”…a form of pride. Speaking well of others edifies them and builds them up instead of us. Make sure, however, that what you say is not intended as flattery.

    12. Treat pride as a condition that always necessitates embracing the cross. (Luke 9:23) It is our nature to be proud and it is God’s nature in us that brings humility. Committing to a lifestyle of daily dying to self and living through Him is the foundation for true humility.

The 12 point outline from HLP is excellent. Under #4 I would also add Romans 13:1-7. As far as #12, there are many, many verses about the cross that should make us humble.

Anytime we compare ourselves to others we will find someone we think is worse than we are. But when we compare ourselves to Christ it is easy to see that we have all failed at one time or another.

    Tara,

Interesting question. I have no answer. For me, me only, I pray one prayer daily, in fact many many times each day. I have these letters at my computer (where I spend waaay too much time) to remind me that I need to pray:

    L I D G T T F T A T I M

The letters remind me of my prayer.

Lord, I do give Thee thanks, for the abundance that is mine.

Until I get thankful enough (and I’m not!) I try not to ask for anything. Why would I deserve anything when I can’t even be thankful for the ABUNDANCE I’ve been given?

Good ol’ Bill W., the author of “Alcoholics Anonymous,” had the best approach to pray I’ve ever encountered.

One of the 12 steps suggests prayer but adds, “…praying only for knowledge of His will and the power to carry it out.”

No, “Come down from the sky and same grandma from cancer.” No “Pay my bills and send me a husband.” No “Open the eyes of the sodomites and free them from their sinful actions.”

Nope. Simply ask for “…knowledge of His will and the power to carry it out.”

That’s pretty elegant theology when you get down to it.

I have my problems with attempting to humanize whatever “God-nees” might be. I suspect “God” isn’t merely a he or a she or anything less that can adequately be explained in human terms. That’s one reason why I reject fundamentalists — of all creeds — who strut around as if they have the inside track to “God.”

It’s not that so-called “people of God” are worthless. I suspect Pope John Paul II might have been a pretty good person even before he achieved an audience with “Regular.”

But there’s nothing about religion that’s actually contributed to what human beings have achieved over the millennia Most often, blind religious faith has been an impediment to progress.

Sounds alot like the Lord’s prayer:

    1. Acknowledge God as Lord of your life — Our Father which art in heaven
    2. Praise and worship him — Hallowed be thy name
    3. Pray for God’s will to be done, not your own will — Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done as in heaven, so in earth.
    4. Make your requests known to him — Give us day by day our daily bread
    5. Ask for forgiveness for yourself — And forgive us our sins
    6. Ask for forgiveness for others — for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us.
    7. Pray for his help for the trials you may face today — And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

This place encourages people to make fun of others for NO good reasons. Why would anyone make themselves vulnerable in the important areas by sharing personal information? We get called stupid and worse for having an opinion, why would we want to let people know who we are and where our vulnerabilities lie? Some days it seems like there is an ongoing competition to see who can level the greatest (or best!) criticism.

I was asked recently by a true friend who blogs here WHY I participate on this blog. I told him it is because of the many great, interesting, fun, kind, knowledgeable people (like the one who asked!) that I met here! Does that implicity advocate doing away with the FDA?
Who is the government to tell us we cannot take drugs the pharmaco’s have developed but have not yet been proven safe?

Perhaps the pharma companies could just disclose the risks (e.g. “We have no idea what this drug may do to a human, especially over long-term use, but we think it may cure angina”) and let the consumer decide what is best for him/her.

    Mayor’s Statement on Downtown Revitalization

    Date: December 16, 2008
    Contact: Communications Team
    Phone: (316) 268-4351

Council unanimously supports Mayor’s vision for downtown

The Wichita City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to support Mayor Carl Brewer’s vision for the next phase of downtown revitalization, which has been shared in several community meetings the Mayor has held in recent months.

For more information regarding the Mayor’s downtown vision or to see a City7 video capturing competing cities’ downtown improvements, go to http://www.wichita.gov. To request a group presentation of the Mayor’s vision, please contact Virdena Gilkey in the City Council office at 268-4331 or at vgilkey@wichita.gov.

Following is an excerpt of the Mayor’s statement during Tuesday’s Council meeting:

“I would like to take a moment to discuss my Vision for Downtown Wichita. As some of you may know, I have been speaking for several months to District Advisory Boards, other citizen groups and community and business leaders about my vision for downtown Wichita.

My comments have focused on creating a downtown that is Everybody’s Neighborhood. I envision a Downtown that connects the Old Town District, the new Downtown Arena and Riverfront improvements including the Wichita Waterwalk and the Museum District.

I envision a pedestrian friendly downtown where families, young people, businesses and visitors can walk or drive from one destination to the next.

Downtown would be a place for people of all ages. It would feature park and open spaces, retailers, residences, restaurants, office buildings and multiple venues for arts and entertainment.

Earlier today, this City Council took additional steps toward fulfilling a vision of a downtown that is Everybody’s Neighborhood.

    The council:

    *

Cast a vote of support for the Exchange Place Project, which will add 201 market-rate apartments to downtown, 229 parking spaces and up to 13,000 square-feet of ground-floor retail space.
    *

Expressed support for façade improvements to two downtown mainstays, The Orpheum Office Building and the Petroleum Building.
    *

And approved amendments to the Wichita WaterWalk Project, which will anchor riverfront improvements for years to come.

I want to thank this City Council for the steps it has taken to support this vision. It has approved the establishment of a special tax district, and the financing of needed pubic improvements to support activities that will take place around the new arena.

There is much work to be done to refine this vision and make it a reality. It won’t be easy. It will take a team effort, a communitywide effort. There will be naysayers. I have asked key leaders to help me define a process for creating this vision. I anticipate that the Council and I will need to establish a Steering Committee to help guide this process. We know that we will need to engage citizens to create a plan that defines what the next phase of downtown should look like and creates that road map for how to make it happen.

As I speak to the citizens of this community, I am finding that they are embracing a new vision for downtown with a high degree of enthusiasm. Many want to get involved and be a part of this initiative. Many want to share their ideas on what downtown should look like in the not so distant future.

Today, I am asking that you support the creation of a new vision for downtown. Your support will begin with appointing members to a steering committee. I anticipate that after the first of the year, I will be asking your support to engage citizens in the creation of a new downtown plan.

Some of you may ask how much it will cost to create this plan for our downtown. In these uncertain economic times, we are all concerned with spending public dollars wisely. I am not asking for a financial commitment today as I do not know what it will cost. I am researching private sector support along with grant opportunities to complement government financing. I will bring back information to you that outlines the process for creating a plan and the necessary financial support at a later date.

So today, I am asking that you support the creation of a new vision for downtown. I also ask that you support this new vision by helping to engage citizens in this exciting new venture to create a more livable, sustainable community with a quality of life second to none.”

A little unrest among homo sexual Obama supporters.
    ————
    Gay activists furious with Obama
    By BEN SMITH & NIA-MALIKA HENDERSON | 12/17/08 7:40 PM EST

Barack Obama’s choice of a prominent evangelical minister to perform the invocation at his inauguration is a conciliatory gesture toward social conservatives who opposed him in November, but it is drawing fierce challenges from a gay rights movement that – in the wake of a gay marriage ban in California – is looking for a fight.

Rick Warren, the senior pastor of Saddleback Church in southern California, opposes abortion rights but has taken more liberal stances on the government role in fighting poverty, and backed away from other evangelicals’ staunch support for economic conservatism. But it’s his support for the California constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage that drew the most heated criticism from Democrats Wednesday.

“Your invitation to Reverend Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at your inauguration is a genuine blow to LGBT Americans,” the president of Human Rights Campaign, Joe Solomonese, wrote Obama Wednesday. “[W]e feel a deep level of disrespect when one of architects and promoters of an anti-gay agenda is given the prominence and the pulpit of your historic nomination.”

    Here’s the response:
Linda Douglass, a spokeswoman for Mr. Obama’s presidential inaugural committee, said the upcoming ceremony would be the “most open and accessible” inauguration in history and defended the inclusion of Mr. Warren.

“Clearly, the president-elect disagrees with him on issues involving the LGBT community,” she said. But Mr. Obama has consistently stressed the need to “seek common ground with people with whom we disagree fundamentally.”

Ms. Douglass noted that the benediction, or closing prayers, would be offered by the Rev. Joseph E. Lowery, a civil rights icon who has expressed support for gay marriage, and that the Lesbian and Gay Band Association would march in the inaugural parade, the first time such a group would do so.

Let the guy do his invocation thing, but put Camp Obama on notice that he damn well better deliver on his campaign promises.

    Oh? Then what’s this?
    The Obama-Biden Plan

    # Expand Hate Crimes Statutes: In 2004, crimes against LGBT Americans constituted the third-highest category of hate crime reported and made up more than 15 percent of such crimes. Barack Obama cosponsored legislation that would expand federal jurisdiction to include violent hate crimes perpetrated because of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. As a state senator, Obama passed tough legislation that made hate crimes and conspiracy to commit them against the law.
    # Fight Workplace Discrimination: Barack Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees’ domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. Obama also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
    # Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: Barack Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.
    # Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage: Barack Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006 which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman and prevented judicial extension of marriage-like rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples.
    # Repeal Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell: Barack Obama agrees with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili and other military experts that we need to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars replacing troops kicked out of the military because of their sexual orientation. Additionally, more than 300 language experts have been fired under this policy, including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. Obama will work with military leaders to repeal the current policy and ensure it helps accomplish our national defense goals.
    # Expand Adoption Rights: Barack Obama believes that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. He thinks that a child will benefit from a healthy and loving home, whether the parents are gay or not.

Political posturing hardly constitutes a promise.

“Pastor Warren, while enjoying a reputation as a moderate based on his affable personality and his church’s engagement on issues like AIDS in Africa, has said that the real difference between James Dobson and himself is one of tone rather than substance,” read a statement from People For the American Way President Kathryn Kolbert. “He has repeated the Religious Right’s big lie that supporters of equality for gay Americans are out to silence pastors. He has called Christians who advance a social gospel Marxists. He is adamantly opposed to women having a legal right to choose an abortion.”

“Picking Rick Warren to give THE invocation,” wrote John Aravosis on AmericaBlog, “is abominable.”

Avavosis gave obama a pass on donnie mcclurkin. I hope he’s happy now.

The highest populations of LGBT are in CA and NY.

    #Fight Workplace Discrimination:
    Again, too much federal influence

    # Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT
Good luck with that. It will probably be overturned by the Supreme Court as most states have voted any similar measures down.

    # Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage:
I have no problem with that. Leave it to the states to decide.

    # Repeal Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell:
    I question your statistics. Source?

    # Expand Adoption Rights:
    No problem with this.

With volcanoes, la Nina/el Nino ocean currents, wind currents, sun activity and possibly many more NATURAL phenomena affecting Artic ice, that leaves the AGW crowd scurrying for more evidence before the real data proves them wrong in the near future.

The AGW crowd wants to blame man so they can control man. The so called “progressive” movement wants more taxes, bigger government, more laws and regulations and they can’t do it unless they create a crisis and scare the world into giving up their money and rights. The world will suffer because of a gross misallocation of resources vital to grow economies especially energy and food supplies. If the AGW is so concerned why are they not targeting China and India? China is the largest emitter of GHGs but is except from the Kyoto treaty.

There are some on the left who want to drastically reduce the world population to save the planet. It can be done systematically by slow starvation and disease because of the lack of progress, or wakos with dirty bombs. We won’t need to wait 100 years to see if mankind is destroyed by global warming. Millions might be killed much sooner.

The motive is apparent and something stinks badly here so let’s listen to the skeptics. It’s worth a debate.

A true conservative to me has nothing to do with social issues, and everything to do with fiscal responsibility.

I think government should work for and with us and will if properly administered. I further think recent Republican administrations have set out to make government fail by incompetence in governing. I think it might have been on purpose.

    Because there is no standard.

“IT’S SEN. CAROLINE: LIKE IT OR NOT!
    Wed Dec 17 2008 19:45:45 ET

When a powerful labor leader picked up the phone this week, he was surprised to hear the voice of a top aide to New York City Mayor Bloomberg. The aide made it clear: Caroline Kennedy [lose the Schlossberg] is going to be senator, “so get on board now!”

Buttons are being pushed and strings pulled by the mayor, the NEW YORK TIMES plans to front on Thursday.

    http://www.drudgereport.com/flashck.htm

The involvement has helped immediately elevate and coordinate the debut of Kennedy, who lacked an experienced political staff of her own.

But now, it is setting off an intense backlash among Democrats.

Democrats are so funny, or would be if they didn’t present such a real and present danger to the country.
