New speaker, same political makeup

With moderate Republican Senate President Steve Morris of Hugoton having retained control of his chamber Monday, House Republicans made the real news, choosing Rep. Mike O’Neal (in photo), R-Hutchinson, to be speaker over one-term House Speaker Melvin Neufeld, R-Ingalls. Some see it as payback for Neufeld’s failures to block expanded gambling in 2007 and overcome the governor’s coal-plant vetoes in 2008, but O’Neal’s leadership could be similar in terms of conservative ideology and partisan hardball. At least Morris and Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, R-Independence, can be counted on to continue the Senate’s traditional role of pulling the right-leaning House toward the middle.

All of that “leadership” sure has helped the budget, hum?

$1 billion + in the hole.

    Great work Republicans!

Let’s see.. to effect change, be sure to keep electing the same people and expect a different outcome. That’s an act of faith ( or is it folly)?
When in doubt, repeat the action.

Hey Gster, good to see ya!

    You forgot a step though.

“Keep doing the same things but do them harder and faster”.

Looks like it’ll be (non)business as usual. Will they hold up all legislation until they can get their coal plant?

“Last I checked a governor has to approve the budgets?”

Uh, the governor proposes and the legislature makes the appropriations. She could veto a budget she didnt like, but given the death grip the repukes have on the legislature, what’s the point?

But then, if you ever had a civics class, you’d know that…

Big coal needs to start spreading around the money. I’m not sure it’s as big a priority for o’neal as it was for melvin.

And we see how well that “hold up all legislation” strategy worked for ol’ mel. What an asshat.

Heh. For the republican controlled legislature:

    Stopping gambling = good.

Stopping equality for the queers = good.

Stopping the flood of red ink in the state budget?

    Good not so much…

Stopping the republican controlled legislature from doing more damage to the state?

    Priceless.

The thing I remember most about O’Neal was back in 1993, after a prosecutor in Riley County had thrown out a rape case because of a 1909 law that said intoxication of the victim was a legal defense, a bipartisan group of legislators introduced a bill repealing the 1909 law.
O’Neal refused to hear it in committee, instead devoting time to a bill that would permit the sale of “marital aids” with a doctors prescription.
The bill passed the House; in the Senate, Lillian Papay of Great Bend (who died last week) amended the rape bill onto O’Neal’s bill.
Can’t remember how O’Neal voted on the bill when it came back to bite him.

    Kansas Farm Girl,

You are frequnetly thoughtful, but the stupid name calling is beneath your intellect.

No matter what anyone thinks about Wagle, how in the world can anyone defend Morris and the past four years?

Yeah Mr. C, I had heard this. He’ll have the fundies peeing in their panties over his candidacy. Hell, he’s capable of bringing on the rapture all by himself.

Huelskamp is the asshat that asshats wear.

Which of course means he’ll win in western kansas and hold the seat for life, or until he moves up to the senate.

    Jesus WEPT. SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!!

He probably posts here under the name donndublin.

“Uh, the governor proposes and the legislature makes the appropriations.”

And, uh, it’s been Sebelius’ MO to irresponsibly and/or ignorantly propose a budget about 2X what eventually gets approved. She makes plenty of lofty promises and leaves it to the legislature to do the dirty work. With nothing to offer, she signs off. Some leader.

Right now Sebelius is praying hard for a cabinet appointment so she doesn’t have to get her hands dirty from the budget crisis she done nothing to help avoid.

“Thanks for making my point exactly. She could VETO IT!”

So….the repukes pass these dumb budgets and it’s HER fault they do it?

    heh. HAHAHAAHAHHAHA.

Thanks for ignoring the second part of my post.

WHY waste the time and effort to veto it when the repukes will vote the party line to override?

I have no idea what you need. Other than an education…And maybe a little exposure to reality.
