It was no surprise to Kansans, but Sen. Sam Brownback’s formal announcement Thursday that he’s giving up his seat in 2010 has the national political media talking. Washington Post blogger Chris Cillizza said it “gives Democrats a real chance at a pickup.” And if the term-limited Gov. Kathleen Sebelius runs for the Senate, he writes, “she would start the race as the favorite with Reps. Jerry Moran (R) and Todd Tiahrt (R) both far less well known than Sebelius. Still, Democrats haven’t won a Kansas Senate seat since 1932. That’s, um, 76 years.”

So a guy who favors term limits was actually able to enforce his own position by resigning? Perhaps someone could tell that to Tiahrt.
A U.S. Senator position is probably the highest paid, highest perks (with snacks at that), position in the world. No specific responsibility, hide among the 100 member-club, treated with high honor whether or not deserved, a large staff to do your bidding and work.
My guess Senator Brownback will change his mind during the next year or so on the basis that “America and the Republicans need him at time of dire danger to our republic,” or something like that.
I doubt if Brownback will want to return to Topeka, Kansas and actually get his hands dirty running for Kansas governor which he might or might not win.
It’s questionable whether or not Brownback would run for governor. Being governor means you have to show up for work more than 50% of the time. That’s too much of a demanding schedule. Only Caroline Kennedy manages to work less.
Sigh. I remember when Brownback was a moderate.
Hey MH, have you checked the attendance records of the other major candidates who were in the Senate during the time that Sam was running for the nomination? They missed as many or more days as He did. Other than the time he was running, Sam had an excellent attendance record.
Sebelius has only one chance of being elected Senator from Kansas. The Democrats would have to win the Secretary of States office in 2010. Then they could steal the election with massive, sanctioned voter fraud like the Dems have done in so many other States. (Minnesota, Ohio etc.).
“Still, Democrats haven’t won a Kansas Senate seat since 1932. That’s, um, 76 years.”
No wonder Kansas is so f’d up.
More than three generations grown up in darkness.
I don’t have a lot of hope for change in this sorry place.
Hey MP, did you see that princess caroline hasnt voted in the past twelve elections?
I guess the rich and famous dont do voting. Even absentee voting. For crying out loud.
I guess she was too busy managing her money to send in a ballot. But now? She has plenty of time to be a senator.
I’m thinking brownback wants the governorship as part of his plan to be preznit someday. Not because he really wants to be governator.
Hee hee heee. CofM cant tell Maggotpunk from Monkeyhawk.
I always suspected the wingnuts here couldnt read.
Thanks for confirming.
For all the downs I have for Brownback I can give him this much credit. He does seem to stand by what he believes even when to abandon it would be in his favor. I do not agree with him on many of his stances, but I can respect him for being real instead of telling you what you want to hear.
‘ massive sanctioned voter fraud’ Where do you freaks come from?
Then they could steal the election with massive, sanctioned voter fraud like the Dems have done in so many other States. (Minnesota, Ohio etc.).

The senate race in Minnesota is not over. Are the Dems really stealing the election, or undoing republican fraud? I guess it depends which side of the fence you are on.
“Then they could steal the election with massive, sanctioned voter fraud like the Dems have done in so many other States.”
Proof?
Or is that just what your knee jerk reaction always is when you dont like the outcome of an election?
As I have said before why go through the machinations of a bogus recount. Give the seat to Franken and move on. When ballots ‘discovered’ in the trunk of an election worker were allowed to be counted several days after the elections and when counts were allowed to be ‘corrected’ days after the final talley then we know the fix is in.
From the state that gave us a gov who was a professional wrestler we will now have a gag line writer from SNL as a senator. You can’t make this stuff up.
Check the blond-bummers web site. She’s planting the voter fraud thing in Minnesota. All her followers are panting in her footsteps, and repeating the nonsense. About as much “facts” to her as there was to Franklin.

I think it is cold weather up there okobserver. Cooped up all the time. Drives ‘em nuts.
Another reason why global warming wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Ive been there in the summer and it was cold. They could stand a little global warming. The winter snows don’t all melt until August.
This election is such a sham.
okobserver,
You may get your wish.

Cosmos I read what the guy you agree with wrote and then I read the comments because this is from a blog you know. Just people like you and me voicing their opinions:

“The linear fit isn’t meant to suggest that the change over time is linear; it’s used to establish that there’s a trend (there is), and that it’s downward (it is). It also provides a very rough estimate of the total decline, a little under 2 million km^2.
A better estimate of the total decline is given by the lowess fit, which indicates a decrease of over 3 million km^2.
A 60-yr periodic waveform also indicates a decline over the observed time span. But since it’s not as good a model as the linear fit (about the same residual variance but with more parameters), and not nearly as good as the lowess fit, there’s no justification for using such a model to estimate the decline. Add the fact that there’s only 42 years of data, and there’s no validity to any claim that it actually models the pattern of change; it’s ludicrous to claim that these data support that behavior. It also contradicts the sharp downtrend in the last 13 years; the sinusoidal model turns back upward but the data since 1996 alone show a statistically significant downtrend.
Similar contradictions arise from attempting to fit a 60-yr periodic waveform to the seasonal data. This is especially true for the summer-season data, which have declined by about 4 million km^2.
In short, your suggestion is nonsense. I suspect it’s motivated by an attempt to tie snow cover decline to some oceanic oscillation like PDO. The data don’t support that idea.]”

We tend to pick and choose those opinions we agree with to post. I know I do and I suspect you do too.
Kansas could be in for a heated Senate race? Gee, isn’t purpose of any political campaign to direct the energy towards creating heat and away from all that uncomfortable and revealing light?
Maybe we ought to schedule elections for May rather than November, and generate all that heat when it would do some good!

okobserver, you copy/pasted a response from the author of the blog, not a “comment”.
If a heated Senate race has more than one Republican vying for the same seat and one of them is eliminated, that is a good thing. I see NO down side to that scenario.

Yes, Regular, you definitely are the “king of ‘cut and paste’”.
Regular adds false, fictional paragraphs to his ‘cut and pastes’, to support his lies.
That’s just one of many reasons that he is aka ReguLIAR.
“A liar is not believed even when he speaks the truth.” Aesop
Well, I’m going to vote for whoever it is based on their qualifications and positions, not the party. Yes, Kansas is largely Republican, but these aren’t my Republicans. I’m from the libertarian wing of the party. Sure, I do believe in God, quite strongly in fact, but tend to shy away from candidates who are in the right wing fanatic’s pockets.
For example, abortion. I think it’s awful, but I also think Roe v Wade made it the law of the land, end of story. However, their have been some very sensible laws pushed that are common sense, like parental notification, and limits on how advanced the pregnancy can be, informed consent etc… Both sides are whacko’s.
I’m a free market guy, who believes in no government intervention into business. This whole melt down is a result of not letting free markets run their course, even when it hurts. The snowball just keeps getting bigger as it rolls down the hill.
I do not believe the government has the authority to raise taxes unless in time of war. Pretty much every department and bureaucracy could be eleminated. Except for the military.
People say I’m extremist, because I follow the teachings of Ron Paul. How many more bail outs and failures are we going to have before people start listening?
H*ll, even the whole social security and health care issue is easy to fix. A MY MONEY program needs to be instilled, where 15% of onces income is with held, and employers (who would not pay any tax) would match that, and the money is divided into different accounts. One for retirement, one an individual medical care account, and major medical coverage, and disability insurance (private, non government) can be paid from this with holding. A percentage should be shaved off to go into accounts for children when they are born, so they enter the work force with some built up.
Some of the people who don’t work, actually can’t (but not many) so yes, they should be taken care of also, because that’s the kind of people we are. A 10% Capitol gains tax should cover all of that.
Our military needs funding, and some basic government programs are necessary, like dept of trade, fbi (although about 10% of the current fbi) A 5% national sales tax should cover all of that no problem.
Oh, no body listens to me.
