Did Obama win young Kansans because he is ‘cool’?

John McCain crushed Barack Obama in Kansas, winning 57 to 41 percent. But according to exit polls, Obama narrowly won among 18- to 29-year-old Kansas voters, 51 to 49 percent. Jenny Davidson, a Kansas Democratic Party spokeswoman, told the Lawrence Journal-World that Obama won this age group because he focused on issues that mattered to them, such as jobs, health care and making college more affordable. But Christian Morgan, executive director of the Kansas Republican Party, said that Obama got the young adult vote in Kansas “based off of the ‘coolness’ factor, not issues.”

    HA! What a “cool” guy!

Love the way they just can’t accept that he was the better candidate. Too bad living in Kansas means evolving into a moron as you get older…must be something in the water. My message to the young ones…get out while you still have a chance!

I don’t remember McCain having a clear stand on anything other than being a “maverick” (whatever the hell that means) and running a smear campaign against Obama…
Obama actually addressed the issues. Makes me ashamed of living in a state where the majority of voters bought into the rethoric, spin, and fearmongering of the right wing. Ignorance abounds in this state..no wonder we’re the laughing stock of the country.

Oh but Mary, you won’t be here to see the cons die out. You’ll have left long before due to fear of becoming a moron. Or perhaps it’s too late for you already. There are so many of you, year after year, that are ashamed to live here. Why are you still here? It is the 41 percent who voted for obama that bought into the hype and spin. An empty suit with excellent speech writers and a teleprompter promised you more than he can ever provide and you bought it. Take the hook out of your mouth.

Heh Mary. I think the trick would be to leave right now and then come BACK when these younger voters are in charge.

    Just think….

Adequate funding for public education, laws that actually protect our environment and natural resources, and, oh yeahhhhhhhhhh!

Gay marriage will finally be legal here because those younger voters have exponentially less bigotry at the ballot box than their lame elders.

Yep. Wake me up when these smart young voters take charge!

I think there is hope in our youth! They are better educated, less prejudiced / bigoted. During the time we’re sitting with our morning newspaper they’ve gathered more info than we will all day.

This past election it was easy for all voters to see that the losing candidate stood for nothing but fear and being “against,” while the candidate Americans elected had a clear vision and plans to take us into the future.

I’m pretty sure that Morgan is ‘correct.’ (You can’t say that anyone is ‘right’ on this blog anymore, ’cause that word has a whole different meaning to people here whose lives are entirely consumed by pointless political debate.) But it has always been that way – the kids always vote for ‘young and cool.’ We boomers did that back in the ’60s. 95% of the anti-war crowd had absolutely no concept of what U.S. foreign policy was. Most of them couldn’t have pointed to Vietnam on a map. They just hung with the anti-war crowd because that’s where they could get the best drugs. They voted for whoamever Jane Fonda, Joan Baez and Stephen Stills told them to vote for because those guys were ‘cool.’ I’d bet that the vast majority or young voters who voted for Obama (or McCain for that matter) couldn’t point to Afganistan or Iraq on a map. But that doesn’t mean the reasoning of some older voters isn’t just a skewed. An older woman told me that she voted for Obama “… just because (she) thought it would be nice to have children running through the halls at the White House again.” I don’t think that political issues or current events will ever be tools that can accurately forcast how a particular age group will vote. There are too many people with ‘different agendas’ out there to make that work. (’Different agendas’ is the kindest way I can say it.)

Barack Obama ran on one issue.

    McCain is “McSame”.

That is all liberal bloggers had to blog about.

Obama advertised all types of media (video games included) to establish his brand to the naive voter. But as we know from those clever MAC commercialls, just becuase you spend a ton of money on advertising, doesn’t mean you make the product any better.

Many voters fell for it. “If I vote for McCain, I know what I have got. If I vote for Obama, I vote for something that might be better”.

This is described perfectly well in Aesops fable of the Dog with the Bone.

The dog stands over the pool of water and drops the bone in his mouth to get the one he sees in the reflection. It looks like a better bone.

As for your assertion that Obama needs “rightists to create and manage wealth,” DonnyBoy, have you looked at a newspaper lately?

We’ve given the “rightists” everything they’ve wanted for the last eight years: historically low taxes on the rich creating massive deficits and wealth inequality coupled with de-regulating EVERYTHING.

    And how’s the economy doing?

Stock market is off 30 percent of what it was in 1999. The US has been in recession for a full year with no end in sight. Financial institutions and car makers either in bankruptcy or on the verge of bankruptcy.

You can’t use free market economy terms with marxists.

wealth redistribution = spreading the misery

Example: One guy has a pb&j sandwich that he got up early before to take for lunch. Another guy slept late after staying up late trolling the night before and he had no time to make a sandwich for himself. When lunch time came the guy without a sandwich complains and along comes the lunch room monitor named Obamuh uh uh uh. He takes the pb&j from the one who made it and after taking a big bite, tears it in two and gives the remaining crumbs to the one without.

Mr. Killed-in-Action says that “tax revenues have been at an all time high” and refuses to give a source.

Here’re the real facts from Nobel prizewinning economist Paul Krugman:

“What you see (in the graph) is that there was a huge revenue increase during the Clinton years. There was also the much-touted revenue surge of the later Bush years, but this followed a spectacular revenue plunge earlier.

At this point (2008) real revenue per capita is only slightly higher than it was at the end of the 1990s. That’s actually abnormal: given the long-term growth of the US economy, we should have expected a continuing upward trend in revenues per capita.

    http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/16/taxes-and-revenues-another-history-lesson/

What Krugman’s graph shows is that after Clinton’s tax INCREASE, tax revenues went up steadily from about 5250 dollars/person to 7250 dollars/person in 2000. From 2000-2001, they fell some 10 percent.

In 2001, Bush cut taxes and revenues fell more to what they were in 1996. In 2003, Bush cut taxes again, and revenues did increase, but only to the levels collected in the 90’s–NOT AN ALL-TIME HIGH as Mr. Kia lied.

Even now, tax revenues per capita are barely higher than they were at Clinton’s peak eight years ago, which is bad given inflation and expected growth.

    Meanwhile the national debt DOUBLED.

For the benefit of thinking people, I had previously mentioned (some time back) the fact of Mitterand’s longstanding Socialist government in France, both as a contrast to Obama’s modestly progressive agenda and a reminder that even genuine SOCIALISMMMM! isn’t necessarily the end of the world. And also to underscore how ridiculous these people are who equate progressive taxation and vaguely liberal economics with socialism.

Cooking is no more an art form there than it is here.

The difference is the diner themself. People take their time to eat every meal. They enjoy eating, they enjoy food (what ever the nutritional content). There is no 30 minute lunch. Just two ancient HTML tags: i and b . Put them in between angle brackets (lessthan/greaterthan signs) for the open tag. For the close tag, same thing, except you put a forward slash after then less-than angle bracket.

Those are deprecated tags, but they’re easier to type than “strong”? :)

I am surprised that does not happen more. There is nothing prohibiting a church from holding a wedding and marrying two people.

Granted, they would not be able to sign the civil marriage certificate for the State afterward, but it would still be an official, valid church marriage (albiet one without the rights granted by the state to ‘normal’ marriages)

    Posted December 3, 2008 at 2:53 pm | Permalink

I have to go soon. However, you have some misconceptions there about “jobs”.

Humans need a way to make a living. That does NOT necessarily mean a “job” in the traditional sense of the word. And if someone has “social problems” like being homeless, being hungry, no child care, no transportation, no education or training and no way to get it, then just creating “jobs” doesnt do “siht”. For ANYBODY.

Right now, there are more “jobs” available, even in WESTERN Kansas, then there are suitable people to fill those jobs. Ask any business owner. Their biggest problem is finding suitable workers. The need for more “jobs” is largely an urban myth.

Need an example? How about the mobile home mfg in Plainville that closed this year. Not because they werent profitable, not because they didnt have the work, but because they couldnt find enough workers. They consolidated operations in another state, with a better workforce, and closed the Plainville plant. That’s PLAINVILLE, for god’s sake, twenty miles north of Hays.

And HAYS’ biggest problem, according to their e.d. guy, is having enough workers for the jobs available. They have about 400 more jobs than people to fill them. That’s why they have the website hayshasjobs.com and BILLBOARDS on I-70 advertising that “hays has jobs”.

Businesses only create permanent jobs when it is profitable for them to do so. All the handouts in the world will NOT get them to create one freakin’ job if the JOB isnt profitable for them. And guaranteeing them “profit” is socialism of the WORST kind.

So… unless you are going to continue the handouts for “jobs” in perpetuity, it’s a losing battle.

    Think I’m wrong?

Look at the “results” of economic development as it is practiced in Kansas.

What businesses in Kansas really need is help in finding and expanding markets for their products and services. They need a reliable pool of trained or trainable workers. They need technical help sometimes in design and production, and maybe even packaging, warehousing and transportation.

What they DONT need is free real estate. Or handouts for artificially created or retained jobs. Or more tax breaks. Economic development in kansas is ass backwards. We tell companies what we can give them, which, if helpful, of course they will take. And if we provide adequate funding for education and training in our schools, both secondary and post, we wont HAVE to subsidize job specific training.

But we dont even TRY to ask businesses what they need or give them what they need/want. We just have lots of empty buildings so we say “free real estate” or “low interest loans” because we have the loan programs. And we give away tons of specific “job training” money for training that they should be providing for themselves.

All those cool freebies may/may not be what the business actually needs. But in Kansas? We dont GIVE a rat’s ass what they need. We just pawn off what we want them to have, and then wonder why the state is such a “siht” hole.

Christ. They have to be profitable BEFORE a tax break is helpful. And even then, a good cost accountant is probably more helpful than an official government tax “break”.

They have to be credit worthy and have a good cash flow projection and business plan for a public loan program to be successful. If not? It’s more government cheese just because we have the cheese to give away. If they are credit worthy, the private sector will provide the loans, and at recent interest rates, usually at a lower rate than the public sector loan programs.

What we give away now in Kansas is the equivalent of “government cheese” for business.

How’s that workin’ out for the state?

Actually I figure I do far more for the deer population than the PETA types.

I always monitor the herds I hunt(when I can). Plant food plots and clean up old barbed wire and things that could injure deer. I keep tabs on predators during births in the herds.

Also I’m not a ‘trophy’ hunter. I usually pick the older or ‘less perfect’ deer out of the heard. A nice trophy head on my wall doesn’t do much for me. I enjoy the outdoors and the meat in my freezer.

    Ralphie,

Ignore the grumpy old man! Walk where you choose.

Yes, Obama is intelligent and articulate and most of us (young and old) were ready for both after these miserable years of bush.

And, you know what I like MOST about Sarah Palin?

The Republican Party seems to be divided in their support of her and the Democratic Party seems to be united in their opposition. ;-)

I like it when the Republican Party is divided — great things happen!

For one thing, nobody is advocating an “all or nothing scenario” on the right. After reading your post on jobs, and almost sounding like a libertarian like myself, I don’t see why you buy the Democrat form of socialism.

It seems your “wealthy masters” now own the Democrats. According to CNNMoney.com, Wall Street securities and investment firms gave over $35 million to Democratic candidates this election cycle. And the amount they gave to the Obama campaign was nearly five times the amount they gave to McCain. The 73% of house Democrats supported the bailout compared to only 48% of Republicans. Obama did as well. The only opposition came from the conservatives and libertarians.

Is that $35M out of $36M given to Democratic candidates by all donors (which would give them considerable power)
    or
$35M out of $3.5b given to Democratic candidates by all donors (which would be a drop in the bucket)?

I’m well of this disturbing bigotry in many parts of the African-American Christian community. The Puritans who came to America for religious freedom wasted no time in enforcing their own religious bigotry, either.

My eyes are fine, thanks. Your statement “And the amount they gave to the Obama campaign was nearly five times the amount they gave to McCain” does not address my question about what percentage of the Democrats total receipts was the $35m.

If you are going to post something as a fact, you should put it in context…unless you are trying to selectively cherry pick facts to spin the data. If that is what you are doing, carry on, you are doing an acceptable job at it.

I did however go the Louvre and saw the Mona Lisa and the Winged Nike. Also went to the “Modern” museum where the Impressionists are displayed.

Also took a boat trip down the Seine, went to the Notre Dame, and the big cathedral in Montemart, also the Arc d’ Triomphe.

I looked at KIA’s BS source.

    Here’s what it said:

“Those [tax] reductions have raised federal tax receipts by $785 billion, the largest four-year revenue increase in U.S. history. In fiscal 2007, which ended last month, the government took in 6.7% more tax revenues than in 2006.”

The thing is those figures don’t account for population growth and routine economic growth.

So, yeah, if gathering the same amount of taxes as we did EIGHT YEARS previously under Clinton is “the largest tax revenue increase in history,” then the CONs are right.

Let’s note for a moment that firing people for daring to publicly “come out” has nothing to do with getting married, let alone the marriage amendment.

They’re not exactly telling the truth about that, Captain. It was several years before tax revenues increased to the point they were under the Clinton administration. In addition, the tax revenue gains claimed by the Republicans included capitol gains taxes that were the result of the housing boom and stock market increases. You can see where that led. Wait until the capitol losses come rolling in for fiscal 2008, and see how much revenue has grown under Bush policies.
