If the state’s public universities must raise their food and housing costs at this time, at least Wichita State University will do it less than the rest. Among the hikes approved last week by the Kansas Board of Regents, WSU’s 3.4 percent increase looked better than the others: 6.5 percent at Pittburg State University, 5.1 percent at the University of Kansas, 4.9 percent at Emporia State and Fort Hays universities, and 4.7 percent at Kansas State University. KU’s food and housing costs will remain the highest in the system, more than $6,800 a year. Back to that “if,” though. Many Kansans surely will agree with regent Gary Sherrer of Overland Park, who said in voting against the increases: “I think we’re doing business as usual in very unusual times.”

Raising tution depraves students a chance for an education. It goes against the mission of what colleges are for. One reason would be to price education at the lowest price possible instead of the highest.
George,
“Raising tution depraves students a chance for an education.”
We wouldn’t want to do that- college students are already depraved enough as it is.
Education must not become the sole property of the wealthy if our country is to recover. We need to educate all the talent we can get.
As a former depraved college student, “Jed” –
I have to acknowledge your accurate observation.
Still, it’s kinda encouraging someone such as “george” might come forward and advocate a socialist concept like universal education.
Colleges and universities get their income from:
** taxpayers to state and local governments, which in turn, contribute to the colleges/universities.
** students in form of tuition, fees, food and housing costs.
** donations by alumni and other supporters,
** business operations: sports, memorabilia,
** scholarship support.
According to the opening comment by the EAGLE’s Rhonda Holman, the costs being raised are for food and housing costs. Of course, some students will avoid this if they continue to live at home during some portion of their college life.
If the country does enter into a recession/depression, jobs will be lost sending moe students to college. Costs should actually drop like oil is currently doing which should drop some food costs reflecting lower transportation costs.
SO PERHAPS THE KANSAS BOARD OF REGENTS IS RUSHING THIS INCREASE AT A TIME WHEN A DECREASE WOULD BE MORE APPROPRIATE.
“JWink” blathers –
“If the country does enter into a recession/depression, jobs will be lost sending moe students to college. Costs should actually drop like oil is currently doing which should drop some food costs reflecting lower transportation costs.”
There’s so much illogic in the above paragraph I hardly know where to begin. I’ll give you a break and let you try again to explain whatever thought process led to post such gibberish.
What the heck do you expect?
It cost a lot of money to pay the salaries for all those liberal professors dontcha no?
Being blue doesn’t come cheap!!!!
If they need more money why dont you at the WE get them to QUIT giving discounted Tuition to Illegal Aliens and charging out children more or not making a place available for a PAYING out of state LEGAL student.
But then that would be to much information for the WE to handle. And likely not the (multiculti)narrative that you must follow.
heh…
