The election results are in, Obama wins in a landslide. In the village, Dixville Notch, in New Hampshire the polls have already closed with the 21 voting residents having cast their ballots. The village, which traditionally goes Republican has put 15 of its 21 votes in favor of Obama. In the past two elections the results were reversed in favor of Bush.

Tale Of Two Snails Reveals Secrets About The Biochemistry Of Evolution

ScienceDaily (Nov. 3, 2008) — Researchers in Spain are reporting deep new insights into how evolution changes the biochemistry of living things, helping them to adapt to new environments. Their study, based on an analysis of proteins produced by two populations of marine snails, reveals chemical differences that give one population a survival-of-the fittest edge for life in its cold, wave-exposed environment.

In the new study, Emilio Rolán-Alvarez and colleagues note that scientists long have known that animals of the same species can have different physical characteristics enabling them to survive in different habitats. One famous example is the different beak sizes and shapes that evolved in Darwin’s finches, enabling the birds to live on different foods in different habitats on the Galapagos Islands. Until now, however, scientists knew little about the invisible biochemical changes behind such adaptations.

    From last night’s discussion.

McCain, at least as of May of 2008 (and there is no reason to assume any change) does not propose a 100% auction of cap and trade.

Here is an editorial explanation. I post it here not to support the writer’s position, but because it does describe how such a system works (clue, it’s not how Regular hinted that it works). Basically, 100% auction means there are no offsets (but it doesn’t mean that ANY emissions would be prohibitively expensive).

    http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2008_05/013715.php

As for last night’s discussion, a quick summary. I posted a transcript (which I took because no one else appears to have done it and posted it) of the entirity of Obama’s comments to the SF Chronicle on coal. Not surprisingly, the edited transcript was very misleading, since he was responding to a question regarding why he was still promoting coal (a curious question to ask someone who presumably wants to bankrupt the coal industry and bankrupt ALL new coal plants-which he does not-and McCain’s plan would also be very hard on new coal plants without significant carbon emission controls).

A Repeat of 2004 Philly Voter Chaos, Fraud
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 7:46 AM
    EXCLUSIVE, DEVELOPING–

GOP Election Board members have been tossed out of polling stations in more than half a dozen polling stations in Philadelphia because of their party status.

A liberal judge previously ruled that court-appointed poll watchers could be NOT removed from their boards by an on-site election judge, but that is exactly what is happening.

It is the duty of election board workers to monitor and guard the integrity of the voting process.

Denying access to the minority (in this case Republican) poll watchers and inspectors is a violation of Pennsylvania state law. Those who violate the law can be punished with a misdemeanor subject to a fine of $1,000 and prison of between one month and two years.

Those on site as describing it as “pandemonium” and there may be video coming of the chaos.

Some of the precincts where Republicans have been removed are: the 44th Ward, 12th and 13th divisions; 6th Ward, 12th division; 32nd Ward, Division 28.

“Election board officials guard the legitimacy of the election process and the idea that Republicans are being intimidated and banned for partisan purposes does not allow for an honest and open election process,” said McCain-Palin spokesman Ben Porritt in a statement to Townhall.

The City of Brotherly Love was roiled in controversy during the 2004 election because of rigged voting machines that showed nearly 2,000 votes for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry before the polls had opened. A man also used a gun to intimidate poll workers at Ward 30, division 11 in 2004.

The real choice in this election of who you are and what you are distills down to its pure essence in just this:

Your only choice is whether you define your philosophy by a conscious, rational, disciplined process of thought and scrupulously logical deliberation – a typical Republican.

Or you let your subconscious accumulate a junk heap of lying promises, unwarranted conclusions, false generalizations, undefined contradictions, undigested slogans, unidentified wishes, doubts and fears, thrown together by chance, but integrated by your subconscious into a kind of mongrel philosophy and fused into a single, solid weight: self-doubt, like a bail and chain in the place where your mind’s wings should have grown – a typical Democrat.

    Just for laughs…

Three men – a Canadian farmer, Osama bin Laden and a
White Trash Biker are all walking together one day.

They come across a lamp and a Genie pops out of it.
‘I will give each of you one wish, which is three wishes in total’,
    says the Genie.

The Canadian says, ‘I am a farmer and my son will also farm. I want the land to be forever fertile in Canada ‘

POOF! With the blink of the Genie’s eye, the land in Canada was forever fertile for farming.

Osama was amazed, so he said, ‘I want a wall around Afghanistan, Palestine, Iraq and Iran so that no infidels, Americans or Canadians
can come into our precious land.’

POOF! Again, with the blink of the Genie’s eye, there was a huge wall around those countries.

The Biker says, ‘I am very curious.
Please tell me more about this wall.’

    The Genie explains, ‘Well, it’s about 5,000 feet high, 5oo feet thick and completely surrounds the country. Nothing can get in or out;
    it’s virtually impenetrable.’

The Biker sits down on his Harley, cracks a beer, lites a cigar,
    smiles and says,

    ‘Fill it with water.’

I HOPE we are going to get about making America better. I HOPE it may be found in some who have so much to have some thought to those who have less, or nothing. I HOPE America may strive to be the place that John F Kennedy spoke of where the strong are just and the weak secure and the peace preserved.

Your only choice is whether you define your philosophy by a conscious, rational, disciplined process of thought and scrupulously logical deliberation – a typical Republican.

Boxlock, it would be easier to agree with your comment if McCain had stuck to the issues. Rational? How rational is believing someone who has spent 20 years attending a Christian church (of which you and others disapprove of) is a Muslim? If that’s your example of “disciplined process of thought and scrupulously logical liberation”, you have a long way to go.

    Agreed.

    What troubles me about an Obama administration with a Liberal majority in both houses and possibly 2 SCOTUS seats;

Look at Michigan Pre. We have had Granholm for the past what? 7 years? She raised taxes on a down trending economy. She raised unseen taxes on a lot of industry- the cost to register a trucking trailer increased 4X. The Secretary of State BEGGED her to back that off as over 50% of the trailers went unregistered. They either went bankrupt or moved out of state.

Granholm is on line with Obama’s views, for the most part. I know it didn’t work for us and we have a Conservative majority state house. What will happen with no checks or balances under a … can’t think of a term and don’t mean this as derogatory – hard line liberal? Even if Obama wants to be more moderate, odds are that the congress won’t let him.

At the Math and Science Center in Richmond, Virginia, an early breakdown of electronic voting machines led to a three-and-a-half hour wait to vote on Tuesday morning, according to one poll watcher.

“Some people have been here since 6 a.m., and the first voters are just finishing now,” said Judith Browne-Dianis, adding that the Richmond location she was watching did not even have backup paper ballots in case of machine malfunction.

“They didn’t even have the paper ballots required by state law,” she said. “That’s not even something we were supposed to have to ask for. I went inside and asked the polling judge, and he said ‘we don’t have ‘em. They [the Board of Elections] were supposed to give ‘em to us, and they didn’t.’”

Well, the national election will be what it will be. Unfortunatly here in Kansas we don’t have a lot of effect on who will be the president.

Locally, I do have some hope for some of the candidates.

Personally, I will probably win as a member of the Lake Waltanna Improvement District as a write in candidate again. I didn’t start my extensive campaign until last week. (talked to a few neighbors and told them to write me in again) Everyone I talked to had already voted in advance and they said they wrote my name in.

Next, I hope Dan Kerschen wins as the state rep. I don’t know the democrat running against him, but Dan is a very good man.

Our state senate race will be close, but I believe Kelsey will win. I don’t know the democrat off hand that is running against him but she got my vote. Kelsey is a crook.

For county commissioner I voted for Marcy Gregory. My wife voted for Peterjohn, I think. I like Marcy a lot. Good common sense and I think she’ll do a good job. I like Peterjohn too, if he wins it will be a fun next four years.

Judges, I voted for Mangana. Anyone that has a name ending in a vowel gets my vote. Also, I voted for Sharon Dickgrafe. She’s been a city attorney for several years and she’s a very good lady. She’s runnig against Bruce Brown and he’s a little too wierd for my vote.

Of course I voted for Roberts. Slattery? Give me a break! He comes back to Kansas every four or eight years and runs for something. What a nitwit.

Tiahrt is a friend and neighbor. The democrats seem to have given up on trying to win the 4th Congressional District this year. Betts seems to be a good man but he didn’t get much DNC support.

All in all, it will be a very interesting election day. I hope most of the candidates that you voted for win!

    For all of those wondering…

Not knowing the answer, I called the Office of Elections in Hawaii. Kevin Cronin, chief election officer for the state, just got back to me. Here’s what he said:

Ms. Dunham’s absentee mail ballot was received and reviewed under the Hawaii standards for processing absentee mail ballots… She was alive at that time. Her ballot will be opened tomorrow, and it will be counted in the same way that all absentee voters would be treated under our law.The key point appears to be that Ms. Dunham was alive at the time her absentee ballot was received and reviewed, and that it met the standards for review at that time.

Madelyn Dunham’s vote will count, even if she is not here to learn the final tally.

This time, Gov. Sarah Palin can claim vindication against allegations that she abused her power in office by firing her public safety commissioner.

Palin – running mate of Republican presidential candidate John McCain – violated no ethics laws, according to a report released by the state personnel board on the eve of Election Day. An earlier, separate investigation by the Legislature found that Palin had abused her office.

“There is no probable cause to believe that the governor, or any other state official, violated the Alaska Executive Ethics Act in connection with these matters,” the personnel board’s report said.”

KFG, regarding the youth vote, maybe this will give you a small smile.

From Darthmouth College, a reader writes on The Daily Dish by Andrew Sullivan:

Those who are wondering if the youth will turn out ought to see what I saw this morning.

One well-known government professor here told me that she has never seen so many students vote in the first hour of voting as she saw this morning. And I’ve never seen so many students up and alert at this hour. They’re normally stumbling out of bed to make it to their 10 a.m. courses. Today, the campus has been buzzing for hours this morning. It appears that many of them decided to go to the polls as groups of twos, threes, fours and more when the polls opened at 7 a.m. The number of students I saw by 8 a.m. walking around with “I voted” stickers on is astonishing.

At breakfast, I sat next to a table of four black students, all of whom had voted. The three men were wearing ties. I asked them why. The answer: It was their first election, and they wanted to mark the occasion.

I couldn’t find a more recent population age distribution chart than this one from 2000. I doubt it has changed dramatically. When we’re looking at the youth turnout let’s compare it to the percent of population. So I know whether we’re on the same page, what is “youth?” Can you tell I’m s far removed from that group I don’t even know its definition? ;-)

My oldest daughter’s hubby is a Republican. But he isn’t in favor of world domination or changing the Constitution to more closely follow the Bible, and is hoping his party will return to its better attributes. He voted for Obama. He tells me several members of his family (strong Republicans) did so also.

I’m still not able to relax, but remain cautiously optimistic.

No matter who wins today –

    1) Remember a very important thing: We will do, again, what so much of the world seems unable to do: We will change leaders, even change parties (it appears), and do so without tanks in the streets, without bombs or bullets. That is always a win. We have done so, now, for a very long time. We forget just how relatively rare, and very precious, that is.

    2) Our institutions are strong enough to make an Obama presidency effective, or survive an Obama presidency, however you see it. This is neither the end of the world as we know it, nor the beginning of paradise. It’s just another election day in the Republic, which is much bigger than any candidate.

So: be you Republican or Democrat, celebrate the day. Personally, I cannot in good conscience vote for Obama; he simply isn’t prepared for the job, and philosophically I disagree with him in fundamental ways. However, the winner will be my, and OUR president, whether my (or your) candidate won or not. When I think he’s right, I’ll support him; when I think he’s wrong, oppose him. Either way, he has earned the right to make the decisions.

The institution, and the process, is more important than the person. And we are better than the hatred that both sides have been regularly spewing on this blog (and yes, my admittedly biased view is that it primarily comes from the left).

BTW – if you think this election has been dirty, do a little history reading; especially the election of 1828. We ain’t seen nothin.

    How absurd.

Since the mid 1990’s the Republicans has control of Congress until 2 years ago.

For the last 8 years we have had a Republican President.

Did you liberals get used to it? Did you get left behind? Did you accept that the country had moved to the right and give up on your liberal cause?

Of course not. Here we are a decade later and things have shifted slightly.

Yet you liberals sit here calling for us Conservatives to give up, prepare to be left behind, etc…etc…etc…

The simple fact is that more people are probably less inclined to reward the Republicans over their frustrations with them than they are moving left and truly support the Democrats.

We Conservatives will continue to be conservatives and support our cause.

Even if the left wins today that is not the end of Conservatives as we know it. It is merely one election. We will have another both 2 and 4 years from now.

Focus on the Family: Rapture Preparedness Pamphlet

    Dear Member of the Fellowship,
Focus on the Family wanted to write and inform you that; The Africanized He-Demon is slithering ever closer to the presidency of what has become a Godless country of whores and sodomites; our country, the formerly, God Blessed, United States of America. Each day he unhinges his jaw and swallows more and more Electoral College votes; devouring counties and states that were once full of God’s Warriors. These bastions of false righteousness have been willingly fooled by his forked tongue; the tongue that marks him as the Serpent King.
As you know, through your individual Ministries, this means that The Rapture is finally at hand.
We here at Focus on the Family couldn’t be more excited and have decided to put out this pamphlet of useful items and helpful hints for the The Choosing. We want to make sure our members are the best prepared for the End Times, and can make it through the coming hell on earth, as comfortably as possible, before they are Called.
First, stay calm. As a member of Focus on the Family you are one of the chosen people, the real chosen people. James Dobson has spoken with our Heavenly Father and has been assured that God will pick you up in his celestial mini-van by no later than Friday at around 10 am, after which you will be dropped off at the pool of light, for an eternity of fun, friends and snacks. That means, at most you’ll only have to suffer through about 48 hours of the Angel of Darkness’s New World Order.
Since the streets will be flooded with legions of Black Satan’s, or (Blatan’s) undead liberal minions; Focus on the Family suggests that you stay in your homes until you hear Jesus honking. Try to think of fun activities for the entire family while you’re stuck indoors.
    You could:
Listen to the entire LEFT BEHIND series on audio-book.
Take pot shots at the homosexual, Socialist, zombies, fornicating en masse on your front lawn, with your semi-automatic assault-rifle.
    Have a sing-a-long
    Make a Jello-Salad
Talk about how much better than your slowly burning neighbors you are.
    Watch Nascar and Veggie-Tales.
Pray for Democrats and foreigners to suffer a painful Judgment.
The important thing is to keep occupied during The Fire. Idle hands are Obama’s workshop. Keep Duct-Tape and a few gallons of Mountain Dew on hand just in case.
If you have questions use the phone tree provided by your individual ministries. The one number and the most important number on all these phone trees is Kirk Cameron’s. He is the root of each phone tree but should be called only in case of emergency. Remember, Kirk Cameron has all the answers, and we should look to him for advice and guidance in all things personal and spiritual; or if Jesus is late picking us up. After all Kirk Cameron was on GROWING PAINS, he is a film and television superstar, who loves Jesus. He’s better than everyone else; twice over.
Finally, please remember that Focus on the Family has upped your monthly dues in light of the fact there will be no more months. Empty your bank account and get us the money by Wednesday night at the latest. Gas is not cheap. God is going to have to make a lot of trips, and the celestial mini-van has a monster tank to fill.
Please find an attached list of necessary items for eternity.
You’re right, you’re always right, and so are we.

    BY STAN FINGER
    The Wichita Eagle

Someone stole several rifles from a south Wichita pawnshop early this morning.

The theft was noticed at 3:45 a.m. at Money Town Pawn Shop at 2425 S. Oliver, police said. The intruder forced his way into the door and then shattered several display cases containing gun boxes.

The handguns were locked away in a safe, but the thief or thieves did carry away numerous rifles, police reported.

Massachusetts ‘Gun Fair’ Where Child Was Killed With Machine Gun May Have Violated Gun Law

    Last update: 5:03 p.m. EDT Oct. 28, 2008
WASHINGTON, Oct 28, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence is calling on law enforcement to investigate whether a “gun fair” that hosted a machine gun shoot for children where an 8-year-old boy was tragically killed violated a Massachusetts gun law that makes it illegal to furnish machine guns to children.
“Massachusetts law specifically prohibits furnishing a machine gun to any person under 18,” said Daniel Vice, Senior Attorney with the Brady Center. “It is unconscionable that the gun fair allowed and encouraged young children to fire machine guns.”
The relevant statute can be found in Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 140, subsection 130 and provides that “whoever sells or furnishes any alien or any person under eighteen years of age a… machine gun or ammunition… shall be punished by a fine of not less than $1,000 nor more than $10,000, or by imprisonment in a state prison for not more than ten years or by imprisonment in a house of correction for not more than two and one-half years, or by both such fine and imprisonment.” (Emphasis added.)
Brady Center President Paul Helmke said the appropriate authorities should investigate whether to file charges against the operator of the Westfield, Massachusetts Sportsman’s Club’s annual “Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo,” where Christopher Bizilj of Ashford, Connecticut died Sunday. The club advertised that the “full auto rock & roll” was “legal and fun,” and that there was “no age limit or licenses required to shoot machine guns.”
“This needs to be looked at by the authorities and, if it is not illegal, then it should be made illegal. It’s tragic that this boy was killed because some people didn’t realize that eight-year-olds should not be allowed to shoot machine guns,” Helmke said. “Responsible gun owners should agree.”
The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence is a national non-profit organization working to reduce the tragic toll of gun violence in America, through education, research, and legal advocacy. The programs of the Brady Center complement the legislative and grassroots mobilization of its sister organization, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence with its dedicated network of Million Mom March Chapters.

Man Parks Manure Near Democrats’ Campaign Office to Protest Obama

    AP

    Tuesday, November 04, 2008

    BUTTE, Mont.–
Democrats are criticizing a 38-year-old man who parked a trailer load of manure across the street from Whitehall’s Democratic campaign office to protest presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

Terry Reed, who owns a construction and excavation company in Whitehall, parked the trailer near the office on Saturday. He also posted a sign in the manure mocking Obama’s “change we can believe in” slogan as “a load of crap.”

“I think Obama’s plan is just one big old poop sandwich and we’re all going to have to take a bite,” he said.

Suzanne Molyneaux, the Obama campaign’s election team leader in Whitehall, said traffic came to a near standstill as people stopped to take pictures of the trailer.

“People in Whitehall were upset, they were outraged,” she said. “I don’t think Whitehall should be represented as this podunk, ignorant community. There are lots of good people here.”

Reed said he doesn’t plan to move the trailer until after Election Day.

“My only regret is that I didn’t do something sooner,” he said.

This is a hope I have, after the elections maybe we can stop being cons and libs and start being Americans again.

While that’s unlikely to happen, perhaps we can disagree without being disagreeable.

But not if the talking heads on TV and radio have anything to say about it.

One (a Republican or any citizen for instance) is not allowed to where political buttons, etc. into polling places, so McCain voters should not have been intimidated.

and then the scary black man carved a b on my face…………

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/04/black-panthers-vs-fox-new_n_141083.html

Fox News’ Rick Leventhal reported live from the polling place where Black Panthers were allegedly intimidating voters Tuesday afternoon.

A University of Pennsylvania student reported that a Black Panther wielding a “night stick” intimidated voters at a polling place in Philadelphia (video below). The Black Panther allegedly claimed he was “tired of white supremacy.” An Obama volunteer on the scene disputed this account, saying there was no intimidation of voters occurring at the polling place.

When Leventhal went to investigate, he got into a confrontation with a Black Panther — a certified poll watcher — who denied the story and told Leventhal in no uncertain terms that he was not welcome at the polling place. Leventhal disputed his claims, citing election law which allows him to be within 10 feet of the entrance.

Leventhal could not confirm that the Black Panthers were on the scene intimidating voters, saying, “There’s been no disturbances that I’m aware of, except what we’ve encountered here. But again, I want to make very clear, we don’t know that any voters were denied entrance to this polling facility. We don’t know that anyone was intimidated to the point that they decided not to vote here, but that was what some people were concerned might be happening with two Black Panthers, one of them holding a nightstick, out front.”

One such writer has followed this deadly logic and concluded that “shocking as it may seem, a newly born infant is not a human being. . . . Late-term abortions, especially when the baby survives, but is then killed by starvation, neglect, or suffocation, show once again the link between abortion and infanticide. The time to stop both is now. . . . We cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion or infanticide.”

Obama’s mom was certainly part of that period.

Fortunately for him he had grandparents that had the foresight to move him to Hawaii, which was a more accepting culture for his mixed heritage. Would he have been who he is today if he had remained in Kansas? Probably not.

This race is historic. I don’t disagree with that. I think in a few more years Obama might have been ready for the task. I don’t think he is now. We will probably get a chance to see.

Are you so insecure in your belief of Evolution that in order to support it you must tear down Creation?
    Nathan whines
“Once again, The truth or validity of Evolution is not proved by disproving Creation. Neither is Creation proved by disproving Evolution.
Yet whenever you get defensive about Evolution you attack Creation.
At least you are not calling Evolution an irrefutable fact anymore. You are capable of learning after all. Congratulations.”

Evolution is an irrefutable fact. Since you focus on that phrase I’ll have to remember to mention it every time I post. I can’t attack “creation” because there is no evidence for any. The lack of evidence pretty much refutes such an absurd notion (like creationists believe the Earth was formed by the hacked body parts of giants and the rivers and oceans were from the giant’s blood, no evidence). I simply mock creationists and their inability to do research to support their non-existent theory. You simply whine because I have evidence to back my position and you have nothing but excuses. How about you post something a bit more substantial than your childish temper tantrums? Meanwhile, since creationists still insist there is no evidence for the irrefutable fact of evolution I’ll continue to post some.

    Attempted Sabotage Foiled in Florida
Posted Nov 4th 2008 12:00PM by TMZ Staff

Deerfield Beach, Fla. is one hour south of Palm Beach. Nearly 400 people were planted firmly in line at 6:15 this morning, waiting for the polls to open at 7:00 AM. There is one voting machine to accommodate all of them.

The area almost entirely African American. Many of the people never have voted before. One woman was 101 years old. She was wheeled into the polling place and on her way out she said that before she died, she wanted to vote for a black man.

Election monitors noticed a man in line who appeared to be a voter. Turns out he was a saboteur, telling people the Democrats were supposed to vote at a different location.

Some of the voters said they were robocalled last night. The message — Democrats weren’t supposed to vote until Wednesday.

UPDATE — Election officials just delivered seven more voting machines.

In perhaps the most distressing sign for McCain’s campaign, a survey of 186 Lancaster County voters — long seen as the bread and butter of statewide GOP campaigns — found Obama favored by a majority, albeit a slim one.

Of those interviewed, 55 percent here said they backed the Democrat for president. About 44 percent said they voted for McCain and running mate Sarah Palin. About 1 percent backed Libertarian candidate Bob Barr.

I for one don’t want to go back to the days of the race riots and for my age group the Black Panthers were part of that time. One thing of interest is a a series of polls SurveyUSA did in Nov. 2006 pitting vs. candidates against each other, like Clinton-Giuliani, Clinton-Romney, etc. One of the maps they produced was Obama-McCain. It is instructive to see what the voters would have done in Nov. 2006 had they been given the Obama-McCain choice then. As Bob Dylan put it: “The times, they are a changin’.”
