Would somebody please call the Wichita EAGLE’s editorial staff to tell them DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ended this past weekend. Frankly it should continue on all year around to avoid changing all these confounded clocks twice a year.
Once again science provides answers, creationist myth provides nothing. The only reasonable conclusion is that evolution is a irrefutable fact.
Acoelomorph flatworms and precambrian evolution
One of many open questions in evolution is the nature of bilaterian origins—when the first bilaterally symmetrical common ancestor (the Last Common Bilaterian, or LCB) to all of us mammals and insects and molluscs and polychaetes and so forth arose, and what it looked like. We know it had to have been small, soft, and wormlike, and that it lived over 600 million years ago, but unfortunately, it wasn’t the kind of beast likely to be preserved in fossil deposits.
We do have a tool to help us get a glimpse of it, though: the analysis of extant organisms, searching for those common features that are likely to have been present in that first bilaterian; we’re looking for the Last Common Bilaterian by finding the Least Common Denominators among living species. And one place to look is among the flatworms.

Polygamist Sect Distributes Voter Guide
Communities in Harmony, an alliance of representatives from various Utah polygamous groups, has issued a voter’s guide to assist Utah’s polygamists with Election Day decision-making.
The family that breeds together – votes together
SALT LAKE CITY — One of Utah’s original voting blocs — polygamists — is attempting to re-establish its political influence after more than a century of largely trying to go unnoticed.
Communities in Harmony, an alliance of representatives from various Utah polygamous groups, has issued a voter’s guide to assist Utah’s polygamists with Election Day decision-making.
“We need the candidates to know that they are just as accountable to us as they are to other constituents,” Carlene Cannon, the group’s spokeswoman and a member of the Davis County Cooperative Society, which practices polygamy.
Polygamy is a legacy of the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The faith brought the practice to Utah in the 1840s but abandoned it in 1890 as a condition of statehood. Self-described fundamentalist Mormons continue to believe the principle brings glorification in heaven and maintain the practice mostly in secret.
But recent events have many fundamentalists placing a renewed focus on participating in the political process. In 2005, Utah courts took over a polygamous church’s property trust, and this year a highly publicized raid on the same sect’s ranch at Eldorado, Texas, put more than 400 children in state custody.

Karada Street Teeming With Activity in Reborn Baghdad
Just two years ago, the stores on Karada Street in Baghdad were shuttered, the businesses closed or suffering from round-the-clock curfews and violence run rampant. Today the street is reborn.
Karada Street is one of the main drags in Baghdad, and visitors find it full of fruit stands and modern supermarkets — flat screen TVs sold upstairs, Red Bulls sold downstairs — an area teeming with activity.
There are now laser scanners at cash registers in the 5-year-old supermarket, one of a host of stores in this revitalized area full of photo shops, shoe stores and pharmacies.
The dark days of the insurgency seem past, the curfews forgotten, as Baghdad returns to normal life thanks to the surge of troops and the presence of the Iraqi Army and Police throughout the city.

And people bash democrats (Even though it was McCain) for outing Joe the not-plumber? This guy belongs in bed with a few of the right-wing wackos on this blog. What a loser.
=====================================================
Joe the Plumber questions Obama’s loyalty to America.
Samuel “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher, in his newfound fame as political pundit and emerging GOP campaign brand name, is “really scared” of an Obama presidency.
“McCain has fought and bled for our country, loves our country–there’s too many questions with Barack Obama,” Wurzelbacher said on Sunday, “and his loyalty to our country. I question that greatly.”
Wurzelbacher also put into question Obama as a “good American,” saying that his “ideology is completely different than what democracy stands for.
I guess we can come home from Iraq now? It’d kinda help our economy and all that…
Hey, I’m Bill the Plumber. My name isn’t Bill and I’m not a licensed plumber and I have no plans on buying a plumbing company. However, I did fix a leaky faucet so I think everyone in the nation should be focused on what I think.
It’s so funny that the Republican party thinks so many Americans are dumb enough to fall for the “Joe the Plumber” gimmick. But I suppose when McCain doesn’t have much of a record to campaign on then he needs to focus on another guy.
But the pathetic displays of Republican desperation will only continue for a couple days until the Republicans start working on how to impeach Obama.
Joe the Plumber is like a bad Holiday Inn Express commercial.
“Frankly it should continue on all year around to avoid changing all these confounded clocks twice a year.” — Franklin
Just move into a different time zone every six months, Franklin. And watch your use of the word “frankly” Franklin.
“You might think, perhaps hope, that Republicans will engage in some soul-searching, that they’ll ask themselves whether and how they lost touch with the national mainstream. But my prediction is that this won’t happen any time soon.
Instead, the Republican rump, the party that’s left after the election, will be the party that attends Sarah Palin’s rallies, where crowds chant “Vote McCain, not Hussein!” It will be the party of Saxby Chambliss, the senator from Georgia, who, observing large-scale early voting by African-Americans, warns his supporters that “the other folks are voting.” It will be the party that harbors menacing fantasies about Barack Obama’s Marxist — or was that Islamic? — roots.
…the G.O.P.’s long transformation into the party of the unreasonable right, a haven for racists and reactionaries, seems likely to accelerate as a result of the impending defeat.
This will pose a dilemma for moderate conservatives. Many of them spent the Bush years in denial, closing their eyes to the administration’s dishonesty and contempt for the rule of law. Some of them have tried to maintain that denial through this year’s election season, even as the McCain-Palin campaign’s tactics have grown ever uglier. But one of these days they’re going to have to realize that the G.O.P. has become the party of intolerance.”

Yeah well, maybe it isn’t all that special
What if for a change a native American was elected President of the United States. It would be cool to have a name like President Benjamin Nighthorse Campbell or perhaps President Cynthia “Running Elk” Jones. Whether a Cheyenne or of the Aleutian tribe, perhaps having some ‘leather and feather’ decorating the White House would put things in perspective.
What about a Chinese-American? Maybe one of those Chinese name that start with an “X” so as to confuse the ’round eyes’ on how to pronounce their name. We can’t leave out the other orientals, such as Vietnamese, Cambodian, Korean, Japanese or maybe even some South Pacific Islanders. A Samoan would be interesting to have in the White House.
Then there are Mexican-Americans – one of those with about six names would be cool. The speaker of the house would have to really brush on his/her Spanish to introduce the President of the United States at the State of the Union speech – ‘Predident Rodrigo Hildago Esperando Sanchez,’ Rolling of the ‘r’s’ and proper ’s’ pronunciation would have to be invoked into presidential protocol.
Then we have the Middle Eastern and those who originate from middle asian, the people of Indian and etc.
I wonder if there are any Aboriginal-Americans out there willing to dip their toes into the waters of political competition?
All sorts of imagery pops into my mind about leaving one’s shoes at the front door of the White House or having diplomatic discourse in the Presidential sweat lodge.
Are chopsticks placed to the left or the right of the plate?
Someone has to think about these possibilities.

All the other stations are in need of Chapstick, as they have been smooching the backside of Obama for so long.

Wednesday, November 5th, will be the kickoff of the Hillary for President, ‘12, campaign….
(not really a stretch, considering at 21 months, this has been the longest campaign in history).
Has the Eagle endorsed a President yet?
Works for me Raptor.
Of course, the SAME date will DEFINITELY be the jumping off point for the Palin 2012 …bowel movement.
My suggestion to the Palin faithful? Get her a voice and personality transplant. Then teach her how to talk.

25 minutes and not one positive word about Obama. If this were the republicans leading by this much they’d be talking about it being a referendum. Since Malkin is coming on- I had to finally turn the channel. Rove was bad enough to watch.
They’re pulling in all the big guns in the end aren’t they? Why don’t they just get down on their knees and beg viewers to vote for McCain?
Poll of polls (Yahoo)
Obama………51.1% up .4%
McCain……..44.2% down .1%
oh wow…a new ‘trend’…according to mx. If an issue has lots of hits on some blog somewhere, it is important. If not..then it obviously is not an issue, or not true, or something.
Sorta reminds me of the people that get their ‘news’ via the comic page.
Keep spinning raptor, your Republican Party is going down and you’re caught in the cesspool whirlpool.
From an article on Nationalreviewonline by Kathryn Jean Lopez
Whatever you think, frankly, of Sarah Palin’s suitability for the office of vice president, to see Trig is a good thing for America. Before this election, most Americans did not know that upwards of 90 percent of children diagnosed with Down Syndrome are never born. Now we know. Now we can offer more support to our friends and neighbors living with this challenge.

Kansan a key figure in McCain campaign
(snip)
Now she’s the director of strategy for John McCain’s presidential campaign and at the nerve center for just about every move the Republican candidate makes.
Now the end game of what has seemed like an endless campaign is finally here. Her agenda for the final weekend?
Deciding on last-minute television buys. Moving McCain and running mate Sarah Palin around like chess pieces on a shrinking board. Making sure Election Day volunteers are prepped and ready.
After that: “Head to Phoenix, make sure the plane is headed in the right direction and wait for the voting.”

Comparison with 2004
The table below show the states John Kerry won in 2004 on the left and the states George Bush won in 2004 on the right. The states in both columns are listed in order of the Obama-McCain score based on the same algorithm as the map (i.e., the most recent week of polls). The states that are colored blue are the ones Obama now leads in; the red states are the ones McCain now leads in. As can be seen. Obama leads in all the Kerry states and some of the Bush states. He needs to pick up 17 electoral votes from the Bush states to tie and 18 to win.

Civilian National Security Force, Civil War, States Rights, Constitution
There will be no one left to protect you
By Alan Caruba Sunday, November 2, 2008
Barack Obama wants to institute a Civilian National Security Force, a vast militia not unlike Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, a personal army. He knows he would need such a force to protect him and to enforce his will on Americans.
Americans will have not seen such arbitrary power used against them since the days of the Civil War when Lincoln put the Constitution in the bottom drawer of his desk and set about arresting anyone who opposed his policies to enforce the Union on southern States seeking secession. The moral issue was slavery. The Constitutional issue was states rights.
If you want to see another civil war, just wait for this new security force to come into being. Obama would need it because the concept of posse comitatus forbids the use of the U.S. military to enforce laws within the nation. An army of domestic followers of “the One” would fill that need, assuming that all other law enforcement agencies failed to resist such a horrendous plan.
There is absolutely NO need for a homeland security force. We have the Federal Bureau of Investigation that has a long and distinguished history of obedience to the U.S. Constitution and respect for the rule of law. We have a huge law enforcement community that is likewise pledged to the rule of law. We have a Central Intelligence Agency and a National Security Agency, both defending against foreign enemies. Nothing Obama proposes is more dangerous to the comity of the nation than a National Civilian Security Force.

“At their heart is violence.”
From the report of the Chinese diplomat to Emperor Chien Long after meeting with the English for the first time.
“Now, listen, I’ve voted ‘present’ two or three times in my entire 25-year political career, where there might have been a conflict of interest and I didn’t feel like I should vote,” Boehner said. “In Congress, we have a red button, a green button and a yellow button, alright. Green means ‘yes,’ red means ‘no,’ and yellow means you’re a chicken sh*t. And the last thing we need in the White House, in the oval office, behind that big desk, is some chicken who wants to push this yellow button.”
Obama voted “present” 129 times, 3 percent of the roughly 4,000 times he voted during his 8 years in the Illinois legislature, according to factcheck.org
http://media.www.miamistudent.net/media/storage/paper776/news/2008/10/31/FrontPage/Boehner.Stumps.For.Mccain.In.Oxford-3518120.shtml
On Voting “Present” in Illinois:
The New York Times (Dec. 20, 2007): Sometimes the “present” votes were in line with instructions from Democratic leaders or because he objected to provisions in bills that he might otherwise support. At other times, Mr. Obama voted present on questions that had overwhelming bipartisan support. In at least a few cases, the issue was politically sensitive.
In a Sept. 4 report, the AP weighed in on the issue again, reporting that a “present” vote, while not the same as a “yes” or “no” vote, could have the same effect:
The Associated Press (Sept. 4): It’s true that Obama voted “present” dozens of times, among the thousands of votes he cast in an eight-year span in Springfield. Illinois lawmakers commonly vote that way on a variety of issues for technical, legal or strategic reasons. …Voting this way also can be a way to duck a difficult issue, although that’s difficult to prove.”
Obama’s allies and supporters have argued that his votes were not an attempt to dodge difficult issues. Instead, according to the Times, they claim Obama “used the present vote to protest bills that he believed had been drafted unconstitutionally or as part of a broader legislative strategy.”
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/factchecking_debate_no_1.html
DavidB,
I feel Boehner’s comments concerning the ‘present’ vote are accurate. 129 times Obama voted present.
“…yellow means you’re a chicken sh*t…”
Now how on earth would a President get Congress to approve funds for a “personal army?”
What a ridiculous smear, heehee.
Alan Carbuba is a paid shill for hire to the highest bidder:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Caruba
Look what else he claims: [evil, corrupt United Nations] … are the ones seeking to destroy the sovereignty of the United States by stealth, creating a North American Union to merge our nation with Canada and Mexico, sinking the individual protections afforded by our Constitution into a morass of regulations over which there will be no vote by Americans.
Right.. Sure.. just back away from the whackos slowly.. slowly…
Sometimes the “present” votes were in line with instructions from Democratic leaders
Great. Vote party lines instead of for the constituants. Outstanding.
Heckler’s guy institutes illegal spying on Americans, an illegal prison on Cuba, and holding people indefinitely without trial.
And then he’s “worried” about Obama’s “national security force” that I’ve never even heard Obama talk about once.
If Fleettwood weren’t still posting, dude, you’d be the Blog’s dumbest poster.
All anti-Obama, but no pro-McCain… makes ya wonder… I guess you could vote “Present.”
A story from the nut-job site that Heckler graces us with above:
http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2008/11/obamas-connection-to-sirhan-sirhan.html
It’s about Obama’s close connections to Sirhan Sirhan. I sure if we searched the site we could also find a story about how the two-year-old Obama was firing Mauser rounds from the grassy knoll that fateful day in Dallas.
I surprised that Heckler would sink so low. But if your desperate and so far behind, what do you have to lose. Certainly, his self-respect was lost long ago.
Deb, Vote for Obama, Trig needs a Momma!
If the repubs in congress had just voted present, this congress could’ve gotten America’s work done.
What about missing votes entirely?
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/110/senate/vote-missers/
Of course, it you think about it, if an issue is going to passed for sure, missing a vote (or voting present) hardly matters at all.
Of course, it you think about it, if an issue is going to passed for sure, missing a vote (or voting present) hardly matters at all.

You are really stretching to justify 129 present votes.
“Obama’s allies and supporters have argued that his votes were not an attempt to dodge difficult issues. Instead, according to the Times, they claim Obama “used the present vote to protest bills that he believed had been drafted unconstitutionally”
So, he refused to take as stand on something he thought Unconstitutinal? What the hell would he take a stand on?
So why in the hell would he NOT vote NO for something he thought was unconstitutional.
Damn, just another fkn politician. And they say McCain is bad. Gawd people, wake the hell up! Vote for any independent party candidate, or better yet, vote for none of the above!!!
Right, Sol, those Republicans never ever just vote along party lines…. LOL. Just Senator Obama… Hahaha
Yeah . . . I’m sure Heckler, David, Sol, and Marty would be voting for Obama if only he hadn’t voted ‘present’ those times.
You got nothing.

Karada Street Teeming With Activity in Reborn Baghdad
Just two years ago, the stores on Karada Street in Baghdad were shuttered, the businesses closed or suffering from round-the-clock curfews and violence run rampant. Today the street is reborn.”
That’s the way spin it as everyone’s singing Kumbaya in Baghdad. Or look at the real story.
BAGHDAD – A string of bombings killed nine people and wounded at least 33 others on Monday, including a senior Oil Ministry official, authorities said.
Six people died when two bombs — one of them hidden in a trash can — exploded in Tahariyat square in central Baghdad during the morning rush hour. Police said 21 people were wounded, including 10 policemen and two women.
The explosions caused extensive damage to shops lining the square in the predominantly Shiite eastern side of Baghdad.
Also on Monday, Abdul-Sahib Salman Qutub, one of three senior undersecretaries in the Oil Ministry, suffered minor injuries when a bomb went off at his house as he left for work, ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said. He said Qutub’s driver was seriously injured.
Another bomb exploded around noon near a police patrol in west Baghdad, injuring one policeman and a civilian, police said.
In Baqouba, some 35 miles northeast of the capital, a car bomb exploded in a parking lot across the street from the Diyala provincial council headquarters, killing two policemen and a 10-year-old girl, authorities said.
Nine others — three of them policemen — were wounded in the blast which happened as a conference on defending journalism and freedom of expression took place inside the building. None of the meeting’s participants was injured in the attack.
The police officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.
Scattered bombings occur almost daily in Baghdad despite the drop in violence since the Sunni revolt against al-Qaida and the routing of Shiite militias in Baghdad and southern Iraq last spring.
Most of the blasts appear to be directed at Iraqi police and soldiers rather than U.S. troops
Sorry to upset you CapnAmerica.
This is a smear attack
Voting “Present” is an Illinois thing. If Mr Obama chooses to use a tool the Illinois legislature provides on a case by case basis, that is his choice as a lawmaker. Without looking at each issue and each vote, this is just another smear.
“In Illinois, the “present” vote works as a vote against a measure during final action.”
“State Sen. John Cullerton (D) calls the “present” vote “a no vote with an explanation.” Legally, there’s not much difference between the two votes, but practically, it can let the sponsors or other legislators know of problems with the bill that should be corrected.”
http://www.stateline.org/live/details/story?contentId=274863
DavidB, you have to keep it simple for them, present is present (is there a voting absent option?)
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. soldiers have donated more presidential campaign money to Democrat Barack Obama than to Republican John McCain, a reversal of previous campaigns in which military donations tended to favor GOP White House hopefuls, a nonpartisan group reported Thursday.
Troops serving abroad have given nearly six times as much money to Obama’s presidential campaign as they have to McCain’s, the Center for Responsive Politics said.

I guess a vote No wasn;t a “protest” vote.
vote for him if you like. Just don;t defend the indfensible.
I guess like when they voted on the anti-phelps legislation, if a supporter of the bill agreed with the intent, but had reservations about the constitutionality of it, he could’ve voted present (at least in Il.)
Chavez seems antsy to speak with the ‘black man’.

Someone has to think about these possibilities.
Do those possibilities bother you, Regular?
This country has always been the melting pot of the world. Wasn’t that something we used to be proud of?
Only the NA are truly natives of America. Everyone else claims heritage from other countries around the world. It would seem somewhat fitting to have, as you put it, “President Benjamin Nighthorse Campbell or perhaps President Cynthia ‘Running Elk’ Jones”.
I’m trying to read your comments as positive. I hope I’m right that you meant them that way.
Who cares? Except when they don;t ??
Sixteen months ago, Arthur C. Brooks, a professor at Syracuse University, published “Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism.” The surprise is that liberals are markedly less charitable than conservatives.
If many conservatives are liberals who have been mugged by reality, Brooks, a registered independent, is, as a reviewer of his book said, a social scientist who has been mugged by data. They include these findings:
– Although liberal families’ incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household ($1,600 per year vs. $1,227).
– Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood.
– Residents of the states that voted for John Kerry in 2004 gave smaller percentages of their incomes to charity than did residents of states that voted for George Bush.
– Bush carried 24 of the 25 states where charitable giving was above average.
– In the 10 reddest states, in which Bush got more than 60 percent majorities, the average percentage of personal income donated to charity was 3.5. Residents of the bluest states, which gave Bush less than 40 percent, donated just 1.9 percent.
– People who reject the idea that “government has a responsibility to reduce income inequality” give an average of four times more than people who accept that proposition

CapnAmericas speculation is just well, speculation. ANd bringing in Phelps Phelps’s church is just mudslinging.
And sorry, it wasn;t my definition. I didn;t do the study.
From the same article
“Reviewing Brooks’ book in the Texas Review of Law & Politics, Justice Willett notes that Austin — it voted 56 percent for Kerry while he was getting just 38 percent statewide — is ranked by The Chronicle of Philanthropy as 48th out of America’s 50 largest cities in per capita charitable giving. Brooks’ data about disparities between liberals’ and conservatives’ charitable giving fit these facts: Democrats represent a majority of the wealthiest congressional districts, and half of America’s richest households live in states where both senators are Democrats.

A vote “present” makes clear Obama’s position that an unconstitutional bill is not a bill that can be voted on.
A Constitutional law scholar would know this.
A guy who doesn’t know how to an apostrophe?
Ehhh . . . not so much . . .
Correction: how to use an apostrophe
– Although liberal families’ incomes average 6 percent higher than those of conservative families, conservative-headed households give, on average, 30 percent more to charity than the average liberal-headed household
Of course, dummy. Liberals don’t want to give their money to the needy. They want to give your money away, as they see fit.
Under Obama’s tax plan, I plan to claim 36% of my income as charitable contributions. He will steal my money to give it to someone else. Why shouldn’t I take the tax break?

PRINCETON, NJ — The final Gallup 2008 pre-election poll — based on Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 Gallup Poll
Daily tracking — shows Barack Obama with a 53% to 42% advantage over John McCain among likely
voters. When undecided voters are allocated proportionately to the two candidates to better
approximate the actual vote, the estimate becomes 55% for Obama to 44% for McCain.
The trend data clearly show Obama ending the campaign with an upward movement in support, with
eight to 11 percentage point leads among likely voters in Gallup’s last four reports of data extending back to Oct. 28. Obama’s final leads among both registered voters and likely voters are the largest of the campaign.

The voting present argument is in the style of most of the current smears in this ugly attack campaign: Find a sound bite or a ‘factoid’ and present it in some twisted, false context.
How does Obama’s “Present” vote tally compare with other Illinois lawmakers’? That’s context.. find that in any of the right-wing blogs..
The ‘personal army’ hogwash: Senator Obama was speaking of civilian organizations like the Peace Corps and private organizations that have powerful effects on our security in the world – as powerful as a military force, unless you just want to blow stuff up. The military can’t be bested on that..
Viewing more than one out-of-context-sentence in that speech makes that clear.
It’s a smear. Stop trying to scare yourself and others..

“In the last debate, Sen. Obama said, “We both want to cut taxes, the difference is who we want to cut taxes for. . . . The centerpiece of [McCain's] economic proposal is to provide $200 billion in additional tax breaks to some of the wealthiest corporations in America. Exxon Mobil, and other oil companies, for example, would get an additional $4 billion in tax breaks.”
That $200 billion figure is false. Yet FactCheck.org and most reporters never bothered to ask Mr. Obama where he came up with it. FactCheck.org did discover that Mr. Obama’s claim about “$4 billion in tax breaks for energy companies” came from a two-page memo from the Center for American Progress Action Fund — a political lobby headed by John Podesta, former chief of staff to Bill Clinton, with tax issues handled by two lawyers, Robert Gordon and James Kvaal, former policy directors for the John Kerry and John Edwards campaigns. Those lawyers confused average tax rates (after credits and deductions) with the 35% statutory rate on the next dollar of earnings, so that cutting the latter rate from 35% to 25% would supposedly cut big oil’s $13.4 billion tax bill by 28.5%, or $3.8 billion. That is not economics; it is not even competent bookkeeping.”
Just another politician.

(Drooling)
So much for our speculating about Senator Stevens (if reelected) being replaced by a gubernatorial appointment.
——
If Stevens does get re-elected and then expelled, Alaska law states that there must be a special election held to fill the seat. Sarah Palin, as Governor, cannot appoint herself to fill the seat. She cannot appoint anyone to fill the seat, either permanently or temporarily. There has been widespread misinformation on this point, including information coming from the head of the Division of Elections. Yes, really…
The Alaska Replacement of U.S. Senators Act, also known as Alaska Ballot Measure 4 was on the November election ballot in Alaska. It passed, with 55.6% of voters in favor.
The ballot initiative related to how the state fills its U.S. Senate vacancies, which became an issue in Alaska after Republican Frank Murkowski appointed his daughter Lisa Murkowski his Senate seat when he was elected governor in 2002.
Prior to the successful passage of the 2004 ballot measure, the governor could appoint a replacement to a vacant Senate seat. The initiative was primarily sponsored by Democratic legislators. It abolished the practice of appointments and required a special election in all cases except when the vacancy occurs within 60 days of a primary election.
Lt. Gov. Loren Leman, the Republican chief of the Division of Elections, twice removed the measure from the Nov. 2 ballot but was ordered by the Alaska Supreme Court to put it back on.
He wrote the initiative’s ballot summary, which said the proposition would leave Alaska without full representation in the Senate for three to five months.
The group that petitioned for the initiative, Trust the People, sued for an injunction once it discovered the language of the summary on Sept. 21.
The language that appeared on the ballot:
This measure would repeal state law that allows the Governor to appoint a person to temporarily fill a vacant seat in the United States Senate until an election can be held and certified. Under this measure a vacated seat would remain vacant for three to five months, leaving Alaska without full representation in the Senate. Other provisions are identical to existing law and those parts of the law remain unchanged. Current law requires that a senate vacancy be filled by special election, or regular election if the vacancy occurs less than 60 days before the primary election for that seat.
If Governor Palin attempted to put someone in that seat without a special election, there would be legal action filed within hours. Guaranteed.
However, that said, nothing would prevent Palin from running for that seat against whomever else the Republican party rules allowed to run.

Rich-poor gap grows in U.S. and world
October 21, 2008
FROM ASSOCIATED PRESS
PARIS — Economic inequality is growing in the world’s richest countries, particularly in the United States, jeopardizing the American Dream of social mobility just as the world tilts toward recession, a 30-nation report said Tuesday.
The gap between rich and poor has widened over the last 20 years in nearly all the countries studied, even as trade and technological advances have spurred rapid growth in their economies.
With job losses and home foreclosures skyrocketing and many of these countries now facing recession, policy makers must act quickly to prevent a surge in populist and protectionist sentiment as was seen following the Great Depression, the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said.
‘‘What will happen if the next decade is not one of world growth but of world recession? If a rising tide didn’t lift all boats, how will they be affected by an ebbing tide?’’ Oxford University economist Anthony Atkinson said at a conference at the OECD headquarters.
In a 20-year study of its member countries, the OECD found inequality had increased in 27 of its 30 members as top earners’ incomes soared while others’ stagnated.
The United States has the highest inequality and poverty rates in the OECD after Mexico and Turkey, and the gap has increased rapidly since 2000, the report said. France, meanwhile, has seen inequalities fall in the past 20 years as poorer workers are better paid.
Rising inequality threatens social mobility — children doing better than their parents, the poor improving their lot through hard work — which is lower in countries like the U.S., Great Britain and Italy, where inequality is high, than countries with less inequality such as Denmark, Sweden and Australia, the report said.
Wealthy households are not only widening the gap with the poor, but in countries such as the U.S., Canada and Germany they are also leaving middle-income earners further behind, with potentially ominous consequences if the global financial crisis sparks a long recession.
The two decades covered in the study — 1985-2005 — saw the development of wider global trade and the Internet, and a period of overall strong economic growth. The countries covered are mostly developed nations, especially in Europe.
OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria said that the study, which took three years to complete, would be useful to policy makers because it is coming out just as the world is undergoing ‘‘the worst crisis in decades.’’
With several OECD countries already in recession, the ‘‘key question’’ raised by the report is whether governments can prevent a possible drop in top earners’ incomes from sparking ‘‘a second wave’’ hit to the lowest-income households, said Martin Hirsch, France’s high commissioner for fighting poverty.
Soooo, Monkey,
What time should I stop by? I’ll bring the beer :-)
Sedgwick County DA Nola Foulston’s office will be investigated by a bipartisan legislative agency for allegations that prosecutors bullied workers with the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services into putting false information into reports in order to insure that children were wrongly taken from their families. Many families have come forward to share their horror stories of having their families torn asunder without cause at the direction of Foulston’s office.
Other Foulston scandals include her fomenting an increase in violent crime by only prosecuting easy cases and offering disgustingly lenient plea bargains to child rapists; her spending most of her time on dog breeding and a jewelry business; a $105,000 office decorating binge; wrongly dismissing criminal charges involving flagrantly criminal abortions and blatant abuses of medical regulations in abortion mills; and adopting her son out of Tiller’s criminal abortion mill.

- – -
Since September 24, intensive 40 Days for Life campaigns have saved at least 441 babies from mangling, dismembering, poisoning, and beheading in abortion mills.
- – -
Tiller’s criminal Wichita abortion mill scheduled an illegal coerced second-trimester abortion upon a 14-year-old black girl on October 16. Her mother coerced her into the filthy, unsafe abortion mill so that the girl would stay on the high school cheerleading team. Because of the influence of pro-lifers, however, the girl ran away from home for a week to avoid the contract killing, and has now arranged the adoption of her baby. This was one of the successes of the 40 Days for Life effort against the abortion industry.
There is no news available of whether the presumed rapist has been arrested or charged with statutory rape. (Most high school girls impregnated under age 16 have been raped by a man over age 18, often over age 21.)
- – -
A new report from the Nebraska state health department shows the number of abortions has dropped 15% from the previous year, to 2481 contract killings in 2007. This is the fourth consecutive year that abortions have declined in the state.
- – -
Leftist, activist, baby-hating Oklahoma County District Judge Vicki Robertson issued an injunction preventing an Oklahoma law intended to reduce abortions and to allow mothers a chance to see an ultrasound before contracting the mangling, dismembering, poisoning, or beheading of their baby. This injunction is a violation of informed consent, amounting to coercion.
Requiring ultrasounds and enforcing informed consent could force Oklahoma abortion mills to shut down for lack of profit.

Obama Called Out for Comments About Bankrupting Coal Fired Power Plants

“If somebody wants to build a coal power plant they can, it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted,” Barack Obama said to the San Francisco Chronicle in January.
Brilliant. Can any of you liberals tell me how much of our power comes from coal?

“Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology. Carbon capture and storage technologies hold
enormous potential to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions as we power our economy with
domestically produced and secure energy. As a U.S. Senator, Obama has worked tirelessly to
ensure that clean coal technology becomes commercialized. An Obama administration will
provide incentives to accelerate private sector investment in commercial scale zero?carbon coal
facilities. In order to maximize the speed with which we advance this critical technology, Barack
Obama and Joe Biden will instruct DOE to enter into public private partnerships to develop 5
“first?of?a?kind” commercial scale coal?fired plants with carbon capture and sequestration.”

Who’s Getting Rich Off Prohibition? Just Look Who Opposes CA’s Prop. 5
Posted by Paul Armentano, NORML at 1:12 AM on November 1, 2008.
You can learn a lot about the merits of a proposal by taking a good, hard look at who’s lobbying against it.
Take California’s Proposition 5, the Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation Act, which would require the diversion of certain non-violent offenders to drug treatment and increase funding for state-sponsored rehabilitation programs. The measure seeks to expand upon the alternative sentencing programs initially enacted by Proposition 36, which is estimated to have saved taxpayers some $1.7 billion dollars and reduced the number of people incarcerated for simple drug possession by one-third. So who would oppose this proposal?
If you guessed: the folks who make their living arresting non-violent drug offenders, you’d be right! According to the ‘No on 5′ website, the California State Sheriff’s Association, the California Narcotics Officers Association, the California Peace Officers Association, the Police Chiefs of California, and the California District Attorneys Association all oppose Prop. 5.
However, even more disturbing is who’s bankrolling the ‘No on 5′campaign. According to the Drug Policy Alliance, California’s powerful prison guards union has spent close to $2 million dollars to lobby against the passage of Prop. 5.
After all, overcrowded prisons — In 2007, California declared a ’state of emergency’ in the prison system because of the lack of bed space — and more prison construction (in lieu of building additional public high schools and state colleges) are a financial windfall for prison guards, even if they spell disaster for everyone else.
In addition to expanding drug treatment in California, Prop. 5 would also reduce minor marijuana possession penalties from a misdemeanor (punishable by a $100 criminal fine with a criminal record) to a non-criminal infraction (punishable by a $100 civil fine with no criminal record). Now who would be against that?
If you answered: the folks who make their living by possessing a monopoly on the sale of legal intoxicants, you’d be correct! According to the DPA, the California Beer and Beverage Distributors have donated $100,000 to the ‘No on 5′ campaign. Could it be that the alcohol lobby is fearful of the day when they will have to legally compete with a natural product that is remarkably safe, non-toxic, and won’t leave you with a hangover? Do we even have to ask?
So now that you know who’s against Prop. 5, why not examine who is lobbying for it. That list would include the California Nurses Association, California Society of Addiction Medicine, the California League of Women Voters, and the California Academy of Family Physicians.
In short, those who have dedicated their lives to helping others in need are backing Prop. 5, while those who have dedicated their careers to destroying people’s lives (or who promote a product that does) vehemently oppose it. You do the math.
Since none of the libs would touch this comment on the other thread, I’ll try it here. =) Good luck.

Proof Obama is lying (from the most fundamental tenet of his campaign): “My plan gives a tax break to 95% of working Americans.”
How can that be when 40% pay no tax at all?
And don’t give me the “they pay payroll tax and state income tax and sales tax and property tax and…”
Those obligations are the product of (government-forced) retirement trust funds or state governments or local governments. PLUS, the EIC already refunds a significant portion of those funds to lower income workers.
What he is REALLY offering: expanded welfare.
Face it, he is overpromising – errrrr, lying.

Proof Obama is lying (from the most fundamental tenet of his campaign): “My plan gives a tax break to 95% of working Americans.”
How can that be when 40% pay no tax at all?”
Probably the reason no one responded to this is that your basic premise is mistaken. I cannot find any evidence to support 40% of working Americans paying no Federal tax.
Common sense:
“It is very important for many Americans to be able to hunt, fish, take their kids out, teach them how to shoot. Then you’ve got the reality of 34 Chicago public school students who get shot down on the streets of Chicago. We can reconcile those two realities. People must be able to lawfully own guns, but we must also start cracking down on the kinds of abuses of firearms that we see on the streets.”
Taking guns away?? Smear.

His background is as murky as the sewage water; his past links to Ayers, Jeremy Wright etc etc and service record as a senator are totally blanked off by the mainstream media journalists. DavidB,
Yes, perhaps, Obama will not take away guns or further increase gun restrictions on his own initiative.
However, do you honestly think he would go against a Democratically controlled congress when they try to do so?
I doubt it.
The simple fact is that as liberals take control over cities, states, and other local governments they restrict guns and increase gun control.
Obama’s wishy washy statements on protecting a hunter do not encourage anyone of us who actually believe in the 2nd Amendment.
Talking about protecting a hunter doesn’t say anything about whether or not he actually believes that we have an individual right to bear arms.
Most Democrats simply don’t get it. They keep talking about a hunter and protecting hunting…
The 2nd Amendment has very little to do with a damn hunter.
Obama’s wishy washy stance on what happened in Washington DC doesn’t help him either.
The Supreme Court has spoken.. Take your finger off the trigger. Relax… LOL…
President’s don’t just revoke parts of the Constitution and the Bill or RIghts… well, Bush did, but other than that, it rarely happens… whahahahaahah!
Despite the Bush Imperial Presidency, we do have a system of checks and balances. Anyone who thinks a “radical” president can waltz in and turn everything upside down has no faith in the American system, or needs to take a basic civics class.
DavidB,
The President appoints the Supreme Court Judges. Most likely the next President could appoint 2 of them.
Obama is an anti-gun liberal. He would most likely appoint more anti-gun liberals to the court.
Your ignorant idea that simply because the Court has spoken in this one limited incidence doesn’t mean anything about the many other ways that the liberals can both pass more restrictive controls on our gun rights and appoint judges who will uphold same.
How does my post relate to ‘killing people’?
Perhaps because that was what you were wanting us to believe?
Yes, an innocent remark, in and of itself, considering the date, but also considering the context, it appeared that you were saying people were buying guns for other reasons. I’m just not sure what reasons those were. There could be many. I just picked the most obvious.
“It is very important for many Americans to be able to hunt, fish, take their kids out, teach them how to shoot. Then you’ve got the reality of 34 Chicago public school students who get shot down on the streets of Chicago. We can reconcile those two realities. People must be able to lawfully own guns, but we must also start cracking down on the kinds of abuses of firearms that we see on the streets.” [Barack Obama}

Pre,
The run on guns is due to peoples’ fear that Obama will win and their access to weapons will be restricted. No, shooting of people is not the reason.

Early in the call, she sounds like she is about 7 years old.
I would give a LOT to know what went on after they hung up the phone.
george,
And it’s not JUST the folks that make their living from coal. How about all those that get their electricity from coal powered plants. Approx. 49% of the U.S. gets it’s power from coal. Their costs to power and heat their homes will go through the roof. The railroads will suffer, the coal states revenue will suffer and right on down the line.

That means they got money back on net from the federal income tax system, rather than paying money. Marine vet at Russell rally: Murtha a ‘fat little bastard’
Bryan said he didn’t put his life on the line for his country “just so some fat little bastard can come back and run his mouth.”
It was the second time during his speech that Bryan, who flew in from Albuquerque, New Mexico, had called Murtha a “fat little bastard” during his speech. His remarks were not publicly repudiated at the rally.
http://www.politickerpa.com/alexroarty/2481/marine-vet-russell-rally-murtha-fat-little-bastard
Does anyone know if advance votes have already been tabulated? Does the tabulation have to wait until the polls close? Not that it matters but I’m curious if someone already knows some figures.
I don’t know if they count them or not linda. But I imagine if they do, any trends are a carefully guarded secret.

I’ve only heard exit polls.
Murtha a ‘fat little bastard’- Agreed.
The HUGE turnout in advance voting is something I find promising.
THESE are people who could not wait to vote. That sentiment has to be made up largely of Democrats and voters for Democrats.
I don’t think it will even be close. Down ticket for the cons may be far worse than they fear.
“Now we know. Now we can offer more support to our friends and neighbors living with this challenge.” — Deb
Agreed totally, Deb, assuming the statement above implies support for those who choose not to bring a Down syndrome child into the world.
linda – I’m fairly certain they are being counted but that they are also embargoed until after 7PM tomorrow. In fact, probably later – after the last person in line votes in each state.
bth, I would guess the electronic voting machines keep a running tally of the votes.
The location I voted at on Saturday had 12 machines and about 10 “booths” where a voter could complete a paper ballot. Each station was full with lines waiting. Wouldn’t the paper ballots be the more difficult to count? Surely they have someone getting a head start on those?
Linda, I voted Saturday as well. I was the only one there other than the attendants. All booths were machines.

Senator Obama’s grandmother has died.
I hope some of the cons who made hay over his recent visit to her feel about the two inches tall that they should.
Paper ballots are scanned. There is a receipt taken each night, but no tally. The tallies are held on memory cards. Those along with the receipts and ballots are taken to the county.
This is SOP for most voting facilities in most states. The touch screens work mostly the same way.

Paper and pencil. Includes votes by mail.
Peace and Long “Life” to Obama’s grandmother and the entire family!! So mote it be!
I’d like to see them get “exit polls” from the millions of Absentee voters… LOL
There couldn’t be a good time to lose a loved one, but this timing seems especially difficult.
I’m pretty sure the paper/pencil are done the same way the old school scantron tests are done.
It’s too bad she couldn’t make it a little longer.
Tragic, for him, that she won’t be able to see the accomplishment of her grandson.
Good thing he took time off from the campaign to see her while he still could.
annie: What the stats do not take into consideration as to the gap between rich and poor in some of those counries, is the amount of immgration over last 20 years. Germany has had perhaps more from Asia Minor (Turkey etc.)than anywhere else and the recent absorption of East Germany influences the rich vs. poor thing meaning that 30% of current Germany was very a poor Communist bloc entity. Canada has over 20% of is current population comprised of immigrants from places other than Europe and there is always a lag in income in the first generation. However, both places have a taxation system similar to Australia and the social net is very tight. What is not accounted for is the costs of the health/social net which is a given and not priced in the equation. Sweden/Australia vs. Canada/Germany are not apples-to-apples comparisons and I question the source of the report given the riots concerning inequality in France over the last 2 years….not mentoned anywhere! Another point about the gap, the US, Mexico and Turkey are the only 3 OECD countries sans universal heath insurance. Now THAT says something.
It is being reported that she died of cancer.
If Obama wins the election, boy, talk about emotional whiplash! But I think he can also count on a support group numbering in the millions. . .

May she rest in peace. And may God comfort Obama’s soul. And yours.

=====================================================
Why would anyone need a defense? Ever stop to think, kgn, the bottom 40% are low income earners? That many may have been high income earners until their jobs were moved overseas? I know many in that situation. With kansas minimum wage being $2.95, how could a family afford to even pay taxes, let alone survive.
My question to you is: Do you have any compassion at all for those people, or are they just leeches living off public dole?
I’m just waiting to see which of the CONS will try to poke fun about Obama’s time of grief…. I HOPE that doesnt happen… but….
I’m sorry to hear that too, ANTI.
Being a very lucky cancer survivor myself, I feel for the Obama family. May she rest in peace.
I only hope the Obama’s will have a time of quite to reflect on the life of their past family member during this chaotic period.
Why do CONS keep trying to believe that people who pay no taxes, will get a tax cut?? If you pay NO taxes, how can you possibly get a TAX CUT??? Hmmmm???? You cant pay LESS than Zero…. ROFL
Only in a CON’s mind!!
I only hope the Obama’s will have a time of quite to reflect on the life of their past family member during this chaotic period.
It really can’t be helped, wherher or not you set aside the time. This is bringing back bad memories, so I’m out of here.
Good luck, ANTI.
Sorry, quite=quiet
ANTI, I’m sorry to learn of your family situation. Hang in there.
Nathan whines,
“You still don’t seem to understand how absurd it is to claim that Evolution is an irrefutable fact.”
I say so only because evolution is a proven fact and creationists have never been able to refute it. Hence, the irrefutable fact. There isn’t even a competing theory to challenge evolution.
Actually, chas, if a person makes less than a set minimum, he/she will get a refund of all taxes plus an amount determined by income and number in the family. My mom got a check every year even though she was on social security and paid no taxes.
Thank you all. Remember the Obamas in your thoughts and prayers. A loss of a family member spans politics.
The passing of his grandmother is sad, especially the timing.
Think what we will about his policies and his families politics, but his grandparents are to be commended for putting self aside and raising their grandchildren in the twilight of their lives.
However, I heard MSNBC refer to this as “an unimaginable passing”?
No one has ever lost a grandparent before?
Sad yes, especially with the timing. But also the natural order of things. I imagine Obama himself is at peace knowing her suffering is over.
If Rush’s ‘Operation Chaos’ is the reason for the long dem. primary, then I quess the libs owe him a debt of gratitude.
“Bedford, N.H.: We are always told that rigourous primaries help the party. This almost always is cited by the trailing candidate, but in the 2008, did Obama benefit from having to run a 50-state campaign?
Michael McDonald: That’s a good question. At the time people at the end of the primaries thought Obama was damaged goods — that Hillary Clinton had roughed him up to much. But in retrospect, he was able to build organizations in all 50 states, and he’s now able to leverage those to fight in states Democrats aren’t normally competitive in. He also improved his style of debating and campaigning, so he benefited in that way as well.
And, a debt of gratitude to all those Repub. crossover voters for Hillary.
The news of Madelyn Dunham’s passing is sad.
I just wonder what people such as Limbaugh and Savage and “Franklin” think about their rants which claimed Barack’s visit to her bedside was some kind of attempt to cover up his birth status; that she wasn’t even sick.
I just tuned into the Fox Noise Channel to see how they’d handle the news. Nothing. I suspect they’re trying to figure out how to spin it that Obama’s grandmother chose to die on the eve of election day just to get him some sympathy votes.
I think the ‘unimaginable’ refers to not being able to see her granson go from being a ‘nobody’ to being president of the U.S.
Not many families will ever have to deal with that. Or even have to face losing a person that helped raise them on the eve of an important accomplishment.
On a lighter note, we have this-
LAND O’ LAKES, Fla. (AP) – A nudist community on Florida’s west coast wants to establish the first clothing-optional polling site. The Caliente Resorts, located in Pasco County north of Tampa, has approached election officials about the idea.
Nothing in state law would prohibit it, but the supervisor of elections says he is opposed to creating any new precincts before redistricting in 2010.
Fox will probably cast it as a ’suspicious’ death, no doubt politically motivated.
“I just wonder what people such as Limbaugh and Savage and “Franklin” think about their rants which claimed Barack’s visit to her bedside was some kind of attempt to cover up his birth status; that she wasn’t even sick.”
Simple. She knew the truth … and had to be silenced.
/sarcasm off
By the way – I posted a couple days back a report that the State of Hawaii clearly said that the Birth Certificate is real.
I’m just waiting to see which of the CONS will try to poke fun about Obama’s time of grief….

I guess she died two days before the election.
I didn’t know this about obama either.

ANTI – had it not been for the righties claiming that she wasn’t ill and that Obama was only going to HI to cover up the birth certificate I would never have thought of it. I was simply making a logical extension of that thought process for the righties.

Old folks die all the time. We have all experienced it.
But from the posts here, it sounds like the left is trying to make political hay out of it.
Sort of disrespectful.
JMW, my compassion for those less fortunate is significant.
But that has no bearing on the point: Senator Obama cannot live up to his promise of cutting taxes for 95% of working Americans. No one on this blog (or anywhere else) can contest that statement.
Obama’s “tax plan” is a thinly-veiled expansion of welfare.
Simply put, Obama is a liar.

‘Miners’ union: McCain camp ‘twisting the truth’ on Obama, coal‘
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Miners_union_McCain_camp_twisting_truth_1103.html
The union representing coal miners came to Obama’s defense Monday.
“Sen. John McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, have once again demonstrated that they are willing to say anything and do anything to win this election. Their latest twisting of the truth is about coal and some comments Sen. Obama made last January about the future use of coal in America,” said Cecil E. Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America, in a statement released Monday afternoon.
Roberts noted that McCain and the Republicans ignored Obama’s overall point during his interview.
The Democratic candidate told the Chronicle, “This notion of no coal, I think, is an illusion,” noting the amount of energy the US dervies from coal. Obama pushed for development of technology to sequester carbon emissions, the central tenant of so called “clean” coal.
“Despite what the McCain campaign and some far right-wing blogs would have Americans believe, Sen. Obama has been and remains a tremendous supporter of coal and the future of coal,” Roberts said. “
Awww, Grandma Dunham died.
Condolences to the Obama family.
Shame she couldn’t live long enough passed the election.
News article said she was born in Peru, KS. I wonder where she will be buried and where the services be held?
From (obviously) the Free Republic website:
* They should do an ice test to see how long she’s been in the freezer.
* Better pull her absentee ‘cuz she was dead on Election Day.
* I think that “event” took place 2 weeks ago. Otherwise it would have made great political news for these last 48 hours to talk about Obama’s grandma and take the focus off of his exposed coal comments.
* So Barry goes and see’s granny. Granny dies day before election. She is probably one know who really knows where he was born. Well as the church lady used to say.”isn’t that special”
* This is what I think happened. He told them to pull the plug on her. Now if you bring up the bankrupting the coal industry, it will seem insensitive and cruel. I am sorry but this man is just plain evil. I know his grandmother raised him, but her success as a parent is questionable. BO’s mother was a moonbat and ol Granny was a leftist hack. That being said, I pray for her soul.
* She was swindled into raising someone else’s child. I do not believe that hussein is half white.
My thoughts exactly pinkbell. There are probably a million people in the world that died at the same time. All these threads about it here seem a bit much. Call me what you will, but this is about as important as a dump I took a week ago
# Is he going to tax her now that she’s dead?
She was also a communist sympathizer along with her husband, a long and proud tradition of socialists. Oh, and good friends with Frank Marshall Davis, a signed up Communist, who they introduced little Barry to. One hell of a woman, yup.
Murdered? It’s not murder when it’s for the chosen one. The dems will blame it on lack of universal health care and get a double bang for the buck. Obama will forgive her racism and find another family member to use and throw under the bus.

A friendly reminder: tomorrow is election day. If you haven’t already done advance voting, get out and vote. There are many important issues and races “down ballot” that deserve the attention, whether one thinks one’s vote for the Electors of the presidential candidate of one’s choice matters or not.
Out of here.
McCain attacks Obama re coal, by taking Obama’s comments out-of-context, and McCain makes jobs promises that are not possible.
‘Coal Booster McCain all spin no substance on job promises’
http://www.desmogblog.com/cool-booster-mccain-all-spin-no-substance-on-job-promises
“In a speech yesterday at the University of Scranton, PA, McCain stated that:
“My friends, I’ve been a coal booster and it’s going to create jobs, and we’re going to export coal to other countries and we are going to create hundreds of thousands of jobs. That’s going to help restore the economy of the great state of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”
Unfortunately for McCain, his last minute job promises for the coal sector would probably sell better in a land of fairy dust and unicorns because in the real world his numbers just don’t add up.
While the mining of more and more coal has continued to skyrocket, jobs in the US coal industry have continued to dramatically decline. Like many industries, the coal sector is using bigger and bigger machines that demand less and less people to do the job. And not surprisingly, nonunion coal jobs outnumber union jobs 3 to 1″

Poem for Senator Obama and his Grandmother Dunham
She was my guide, the cornerstone of my foundation
It was through her eyes that I saw myself, my inspiration.
She assessed my thoughts before I formed them like no other.
She filled the void and minded my sorrow upon the passing of my mother.
Grandmother, I stand silent trying to catch another of your words for what is to be.
I will still seek your advice, for it is within, I a part of you, you a part of me.
Grandmother, I didn’t want you go, you will always be in my heart and soul.

Palin cleared by Alaska panel in power abuse probe
“ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) – Alaska Gov. and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was cleared on Monday of wrongdoing in an abuse-of-power investigation into the firing of the state’s public safety commissioner.
The Alaska Personnel Board report ran contrary to findings from a legislative inquiry that concluded in October she had abused the power of her office by pressuring subordinates to fire a state trooper involved in a feud with her family.
Palin, who is Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s running mate, brought the issue to the personnel board herself. The board, a three-member panel under Palin’s authority, was responsible for determining if she had broken any laws.
The legislative inquiry, which Palin called a partisan effort led by Democrats, carried no penalty.”

Of course you meant to say that the exit polls show Obama with a lead since the vote count won’t be released until tomorrow.

Don’t you think that the governor of a state that borders Canada, and which has actual business dealings with Canada under her administration, should know the name of the Canadian prime minister (it’s not Stef Carse)?

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) –
Alaska Gov. and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was cleared on Monday of wrongdoing in an abuse-of-power investigation into the firing of the state’s public safety commissioner.
The Alaska Personnel Board report ran contrary to findings from a legislative inquiry that concluded in October she had abused the power of her office by pressuring subordinates to fire a state trooper involved in a feud with her family.”
Looks like, as suspected, these were two separate issues… On one, she was found to be guilty of violating State ethics standards, by the legislative panel.
On the other, the State Personnel Board, under the Governor’s authority, reached a different conclusion.
Seems that the legislative inquiry would have the higher authority than the Personnel Board — if you follow the chain of command of the State hierarchy…
Palin’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer, is she? :)
Delicious understatement. For the first month or so, I tried not to make snap judgments in that area. But she’s the gift that keeps on giving.
Looks like, as suspected, these were two separate issues…
In other words, the same conclusion at the Branchflower report. Since the general abuse of power charge was outside their ambit (I would guess), they didn’t make any findings about that.
As you can probably tell, I haven’t read that latest report.
And now we see the problem some of these people have: an inability to comprehend what they read.

On the 23rd, when it was reported he was going to visit her, she was reported “to be gravely ill after falling and breaking a hip”.

Barack Obama: Yeah, got there too late. … We knew – she wasn’t doing well. But you know, the diagnosis was such that we thought we had a little more time, and we didn’t. And so I want to make sure that I don’t – I don’t make – the same mistake twice.”

Of course your accomplishments along with Mary’s are running for and getting elected as Governor of a state right?
Or, just exactly what does your high intellectual prowess indicate of your current positions?
Somehow, duh Libs equate insults with intellectual achievement. Must be an inherited trait passed on from the lower order of primates.
‘the stolen banana syndrome’
So long as we’re on the subject of Palin’s vast intellect:
Somehow, in Sarah Palin’s brain, it’s a threat to the First Amendment when newspapers criticize her negative attacks on Barack Obama. This is actually so dumb that it hurts. . .
. . .more . . .
If anything, Palin has this exactly backwards, since one thing that the First Amendment does actually guarantee is a free press. Thus, when the press criticizes a political candidate and a Governor such as Palin, that is a classic example of First Amendment rights being exercised, not abridged.
This isn’t only about profound ignorance regarding our basic liberties, though it is obviously that. Palin here is also giving voice to the standard right-wing grievance instinct: that it’s inherently unfair when they’re criticized. And now, apparently, it’s even unconstitutional.

The polls are tightening up. Some are starting to see the light it would seem. As far as the sharpest knife in the drawer that wouldn’t be Biden who is still in his padded room away from the press after his latest gaffe.
Good thing this race in between Obama and McCain afterall.

I’m insulted that McCain thinks Palin and “Joe” represent Americans.
No one can argue Rove’s political plan that half of Americans are below average intelligence. But that doesn’t mean most Amricans aren’t capable of recognizing critical thinkers, those who obviously are curious and well informed, those who are highly educated, deeply thoughtful and prepared to govern. I want the smartest, those of superior intelligence to be our leaders.
Palin’s pure idiocy during the phone call with a man she thought was a foreign leader turns my stomach. Palin is foolish beyond description.
Oh, the fun to be had watching okobserver trying to snark about anyone else not being “the sharpest knife in the drawer.”

Actually, chas, if a person makes less than a set minimum, he/she will get a refund of all taxes plus an amount determined by income and number in the family. My mom got a check every year even though she was on social security and paid no taxes.
=================================================
JM… I am having a hard time seeing how a TAX REFUND is equal to a TAX CUT for those who do not pay taxes. As to that extra check, would that not be Earned Income Credit?? As I recall, the EIC has a cutoff at the low end, as well as at the high end… I dont have my 1040 book right close to my puter, but I could look it up later….
Titanic analogy to the McCain/Palin ticket.
The bow of the ship has broken down to the keep and sunk beneath the waves.

And then there’s BigotBox, who sees fit to weigh in on anyone else’s “worthlessness.” The circle of Wingnuts is, indeed, complete.

My stomach turns when I listen to Obama lie over and over again. He has no shame. I fear having a prez who is a compulsive liar. The press will turn on him and it will be a long 4 years until the next election if he wins.
I agree with my wife: “Joe the Plumber” was a plant by the McCain Campaign, to attempt to trap Obama… The Press was ready for it this time… The Press decided to find out just who this clown really was, and what was he doing there…

Her staff is obviously GROSSLY incompetent.

He isnt a plumber — not even an apprentice —

Why?
Because he asked a question?
Joe the Plumber is not the one who exploited the answer supplied by Obama. I think Joe said he was surprised, but it was the media that ran with it.
I guess the Sturmabteilung ‘brown shirts’ are alive and well amongst duh Libs.
Blue Jay — I suppose it is theoretically possible that Palin’s staffers could have set HER up to take a major fall… especially if some of the rumors about her staff lately are true… Maybe THEY are tired of her attempts to play a role she hasnt prepared for, and for which she is obviously not qualified.

Is she SO incredibly dense that she does not know when she is getting pwned?
Good point Charles! I’m sure all her calls are screened first…someone let it go through!

Such stupidity and gullibility is stunningly disturbing.

Chass when you were agreeing with your wife did they work out with the Obama staff what street they were goihg to and then move Joe in overnight so he could ask this ‘planted’ question?
It was the question stupid. Obama fell right into the trap the ‘repubs’ set for him. Not too smart of him. He should have recognized the plant shouldn’t he have. He must be dumb as a stump to fall for that one. My gosh and he wants to be prez!
You could hear their excitement that a world leader was calling. It was in the voices of both Palin and the person who answered the phone. Made them feel giddy with importance. Most telling was the inane responses from Palin.
I LIKED Obama’s answer to Joe the poser.
Joe’s a jerk.
Yeah I was saying that before linda.
Palin was like a giddy little school girl at the first part of the call…
Then at the end? Hell I think she may have broke down in tears at getting punked.
Okob… You hang in there sunshine… MAYbe one of these times you MIGHT be right on something…
Of course, the answer to your question would be YES… Obama’s route would have been well known to media, and anybody else close to the cmpaign…. They didnt just make it up at the last minute…. Anybody ever show where “Joe” really LIVED at that house?? Or OWNED it??? Hmmmm????
I sure hvent seen anything like that….
Of course, in about 26 hours, it wont make ONE bit of difference!! Not ONE bit!!
ROFLMAO!!!!
I was proud of the way Senator Obama spent the time to politely answer the question from the man in the crowd who later became McCain’s “Joe.” Obama gave a thorough and thoughtful answer, treating the man with respect.
Then along came McCain who used him, who brought him under the media’s scrutiny. But hey, “Joe” likes the attention! And we know “Joe” isn’t a good representative of average Americans — at least most of us know. Just another example of McCain’s lack of respect for Americans.
See, the bottom line is: JOE THE PLUMBER LIED…
LIED TO OBAMA ABOUT WANTING TO BUY A BUSINESS MAKING $250,000
HE LIED ABOUT HIS INCOME BEING THAT MUCH…
HE LIED ABOUT BEING A PLUMBER….
So, if he LIED in his questions… It wouldnt matter WHAT Obama answered… The Reich Wing lunatics would still say Obama contradicted himself… or the rest of their typical garbage….

With that? She almost certainly is finished in politics.
And I was SO hoping that airheads united like okobserver would make dopey lil’ Sarah the head of the GOP.

I simply love the robo calls with Hillary’s statement that is being distributed by the RNC.
Several here on the blog will defend her just like they defend bush. They don’t expect much from their representatives I guess.
I too am hoping that Palin and “Joe” are the future of the Republican Party.
Chas if he was Joe from central casting it doesn’t matter. He asked a question and your candidate flubbed it big time and went on the record with his plans to raise taxes on all of the successful citizens.
Just checking in. Hmm… See the libs are still exhibiting their maturity level giggling like 5th graders over a sophmoronic joke.

Actually, ‘Joe the faux plumber’ (and his gullible believers) have been proven to be the dumb fools.
Joe doesn’t have the ~ $1 million to buy a business that would net > $250k.
Businesses earning $250k some important advantages.
And all businesses do better if the lower- and middle-class have money to buy products and services. Obama helps the lower- and middle-class.
McCain mostly helps the wealthy get weathier.

Palin’s punk was on all three broadcast networks today…so you are wrong outlander.
I don’t think that Joe was a plant by the McCain campaign.
I also don’t think that Joe’s question was anything but a clumsy “gotcha” question (since he constructed it on, to put the most positive spin possible on it, an extreme hypothetical, but it was his right as a citizen to ask it.
On the other hand, the faux outrage about liberal brownshirts is simply absurd. Joe sought the spotlight, and surely was responsive when McCain continued to keep the spotlight on him. And Joe has no one to blame for himself that the question he asked was disingenuous considering his actual circumstances.
However, I suspect Joe is doing just fine, and he will capitalizing on his 15 minutes of fame.

What a maroon.
“Joe” finally admitted that in the scenario he made up he would have had a tax break with Obama’s plan. I’ll give him that. And, we don’t know for sure that the scenario wasn’t his dream. What we know is he asked a question and it was answered. A part of the answer was taken out of context which changed the meaning (as was intended) and an attempt was made to use that against Senator Obama. When all but Fox News loyalists listened to the entire conversation we understood the swiftboating attempt, and didn’t but it.
“The google,” is always full of truth to share. And listening to the entire conversation instead of the words Fox News wanted to be heard is how the truth is found.

Libs try to follow the dots….. Obama is running for POTUS. He went on record as saying that he plans to take from the rich and give to the ‘poor’. That is called wealth redistribution. Only the dumbest libs and those with their hands out can’t grasp that concept. Joe isn’t running for anything. He might but right now he is the person that exposed Obama for the big taxer he is. This is tiresome Chass. Take two aspirin and leave the tin foil off tonight.

It will only bankrupt the coal companies if hugely oppressive carbon caps are passed and signed into law by Obama.
So no, the company wouldn’t do it to themselves, Obama would do it to them.
So the things you said in January aren’t the things you are saying today. Does this make you a hypocrite. Because I just said this is the thing I dislike most about Obama. He lies frequently. He changes his opinion and stances according to his audience. He has found out the hard way that what flies in SF doesn’t sound so good in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Mores the pity.

The Northern Forum (dedicated to the growth of sustainable progress for Northern Peoples worldwide)comprised of 24 sub-national or regional governments of 10 countries around the Arctic Circle and she is a member of it’s Board of Governors. This would imply international exposure, though not a with national govenments, on a reasonably continous basis. Dunno why this is never mentioned in her resume.
God bless you too Chas…g’nite!
Regular, you can repost that every three minutes if you want… Obama still didnt say he will bankrupt the coall industry… Not even the UMW spokesperson, Roberts, believes that…
Obama SAID the coal industry will bankrupt itself if it doesnt take the measures necessary to clean up their plants….
SPIN all you want Reggie, the Dumbest… It just wont change the words spoken by Obama…. Not at the Zero Hour… And especially NOT when he has his Energy Policy plastered all over his web site, that totally disagrees what what YOU and OKIE keep claiming…. So, keep it up… I will let somebody else post REALITY for you from Obama’s web site… I have already posted it three or four times, I think…
Oh, yea, and if you dont like it, feel free to take your toys and go home…. We promise we wont miss you….
Nite!!

McCain may want to revisit his own record on the coal industry before pushing this too far.
——–
Think John McCain’s supports coal? Think again:
“I would not disagree that with you that in a perfect world we would like to transition away from coal entirely.”
John McCain, at a hearing of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Sept. 21, 2000.
That was just the beginning.
In January, 2003 McCain wrote and introduced cliimate change legislation into Congress, Senate Bill 139, “The Climate Stewardship Act of 2003.” An analysis done by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in May, 2004 said:
“Under S. 139 (McCain’s bill), the reductions in U.S. coal production…are estimated to be 14 percent in 2010 and 78 percent in 2025.”
That bill didn’t pass the Congress, thankfully. But McCain wasn’t finished working over the coal industry.
In 2007, McCain introduced yet another climate change bill, Senate Bill 280. This time he took aim at coal production east of the Mississippi River, especially in Appalachia.
An analysis of McCain’s 2007 legislation by the Environmental Protection Agency showed that the bill called for a cut in Appalachian coal production for electricity generation by 30 percent by 2025.

John McCain and Barack Obama both support some type of cap and trade system related to carbon emissions. So when the McCain campaign tries to attack Obama on the possibility that new coal plants that don’t prevent carbon emissions will face higher costs, they intentionally ignore that McCain has stated that his plan will do the same EXACT thing.
If a company ignores the problem of global warming, McCain said “a utility that builds a new coal plant..would be doing a disservice both to their customers and stockholders.” McCain further said these would be “decisive economic incentives.” So if someone attempts to build a new plant that ignores climate change, McCain would use “decisive economic” actions that would financially hurt the company. Using market forces to deal with climate change – Obama and McCain have suggested the same tactic.
Linda I know you are smart enough to see the difference in what Obama said and what McCain said. In a perfect world I would agree that we wouldn’t have coal plants just as McCain said. He gave a goal of 2025 to reach clean emmission status. This is what a well thought out bill should do. Set reasonable goals and set in place a plan to reach those goals.
This wasn’t what Obama said. He said:
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.
Barrack Hussein Obama
—————-
He just flat out said that anyone who built a coal powered plant would go bankrupt. He would make sure that they did with his regulations. He said it. His words his voice. No matter how loud Chas screams.
When Bush was ambushed by some Canadian comics posing as reporters, he referred to the then Prime Minister of Canada as Mr. Poutine, (a terribly unhealthy condiment of cheese and gravy poured over fries), nobody including PM Jean Cretein got uptight about it. How many foreign heads of government do you know out there folks?
Just the usual: Canada, Mexico, Russia, UK, France, Spain, Australia, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Brazil, Venezuela, and a hodgepodge of others. And I’m not even running for dogcatcher.
Someone who purports to be qualified to be president of the United States should at least have some cursory familiarity with its next-door neighbors.
I well remember the “Jean Poutine” incident (in fact, I’ve already posted to that effect). It was an obvious warning sign that was, unfortunately, not heeded.
By the way, Canada just recently had elections. Stephen Harper prevailed. This is something a potential president might want to know as well.
Heh, I left out China!
Rachel Maddow is pointing out how John McCain is hurting down ballot races with his DESPERATE and hopeless bid for office.
Good.
“He just flat out said that anyone who built a coal powered plant would go bankrupt. He would make sure that they did with his regulations. He said it. His words his voice.”
GOOD that is what we NEED.
We don’t need MORE back to the past. We need more forward to the future.
Even KANSAS knows that we don’t need anymore coal fired power plants. When even KANSAS gets it, you can call it a given.
okobserver,
Aren’t you are supposed to be an “economics expert”. . . or at least a “economics hobbyist”?
Give us your brilliant insight re the future economics of coal-fired electric plants (without CCS), under the almost certain future of carbon taxes.
For example, please explain the “switch-over” point, which IIRC occurs at a fairly low carbon tax level of around $15.
“He just flat out said that anyone who built a coal powered plant would go bankrupt. He would make sure that they did with his regulations. He said it. His words his voice. No matter how loud Chas screams.”
Bullsh*t (in the Harry Frankfurt sense), okobserver. See the above transcript of Barack Obama’s entire response regarding the use of coal.
Reality is reality, no matter how much you relay severely and intentionally misleading edited audio from rightwingnut sites.
Okie is no ecomonics expert.
She and her husband cheat economics by exploiting prison labor to get themselves rich.
I am going to put a name on that company. And it shouldn’t be too hard.
I am going to try this again, because in my experience the “awaiting moderation” means that no one who is not signed in under my name sees the post I just made, and the Eagle never gets around to actually “moderating” posts and putting them out there. So, I am dividing the “moderated” post in half.
First half:
Response to claim about “hidden” audio from SF Chronicle (this is not true, the audio has been in public domain).
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=14&entry_id=32228
This response, heading a blog and apparently by some (I’m sure liberal) editorial writer, itself lacks much in the way of useful information.
To get the useful information, you have to listen to the audio. Here is the audio in its entirity, the comments about coal are about halfway through.
http://cdn.sfgate.com/blogs/sounds/sfgate/chroncast/2008/01/17/20080117-obama-interview.mp3
Idiot Eagle blog, my last post is also “awaiting moderation”, so let’s divide it again.
Next section:
Second half:
Since no one at the Chronicle apparently could be bothered to actually transcribe the interview, I have done so to the best of my ability. Here, in its entirity, is the question and answer concerning coal. Note the following:
1) The question concerned why Barack Obama was a coal supporter. This explains why, in the heavily edited audio circulated around rightwingnut sites, Obama says “with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster”. It makes sense in light of the question that is conveniently omitted from the audio.
2) Obama describes basically the theory of a cap and trade system. Part of the idea is that it adds expenses to power generating methods in proportion to the amoung of greenhouse gases that are emitted. Ironically, considering that the desperate McCain campaign has latched onto these comments, McCain himself has proposed a similar, albeit from my understanding somewhat less stringent cap and trade system himself.
http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1855269_1855265_1855256,00.html
Obama:
“•Promises to cut emissions 80% from 1990 levels by 2050 using a cap-and-trade system.”
McCain:
“•Aims to cut emissions 60% from 1990 levels by 2050 using cap and trade.”
Oh for heaven’s sake!!!!
Let’s try again by breaking it down further.
Third section:
Third section:
Here is the transcript of the question and answer, in its entirity and with context preserved:
Questioner (Kai): “Senator you introduced a bill promoting coal to liquid fuels and then you said you would only support them if they emitted fewer greenhouse gases than gasoline. Now, all the scientific evidence points to goal being dirtier than anything else. So, how are you going to square your support for coal with the need to fight global warming?” (emphasis added by me, all subsequent emphasis added reflects prosodic stresses by the speaker)
(Again, interesting how that question is omitted from the audiotape.)
Obama’s answer: “Uh, I’ve already…I’ve already done it. I voted against the ‘clear skies bill’, in fact I was the deciding vote despite the fact that I am a coal state, and that half my state thought I thoroughly betrayed them. Because I think clean air is critical and global warming is critical. But, this notion of no coal? Uh, I think is an illusion, because the fact of the matter is we are getting a lot of our energy from coal and China is building a coal power plant once a week. So what we have to do is figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon? And how can we sequester that carbon and capture it? If we can’t then we’re still gonna be working on alternatives but…”

===============
Wrong.
Disable Veteran Pay is taken out of my retirement, thanks to the U.S. Congress.
So, how much extra do I get for disability?
Zero, nada, zilch…
Fourth section (trying again):
Questioner Kai: “Alternatives including coal or…?”
Obama: “L..l…l…let me sort of describe my own policy. What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is more…that is as if not more aggressive than anybody else’s out there. I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged…uh…to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market, and the ratcheted down that are placed, that are imposed every year. So if somebody wants to build a coal powered plant they can, it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that is being emitted. That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, bio-diesel, and other alternative energy approaches. The only thing that I’ve said, with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that…uh…for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if…technology allows us to use coal in a clean way we should pursue it. Uh, you know, that is what I think is the right approach. The same with respect to nuclear. Right now, we don’t know how to store nuclear waste wisely and we don’t know how to deal with some of the safety issues that…that remain. And so it’s wildly expensive to pursue nuclear energy. Uh, but I tell you what if we could figure out how to store…say…store it safely…uh…most of us would say that would be a pretty good deal. The point is that if we set rigorous standards for the allowable emissions then we can allow the market to determine and entrepreneurs to pursue what’s the best approach to take. Uh, as opposed to us saying at the outset here are the winners that we’re pickin’ uhm, and maybe we pick wrong and maybe we pick right.”
I even tried to transcribe the significant hesitations.

Decisive economic incentives is not the same as forcing a choice on carbon caps and making a company go bankrupt if they build a new plant.
Closing statements:
While there is still material in the answers that those who disagree can exploit, the insinuation that Obama said that he wants to bankrupt the coal industry, based on that answer, is false. As for the expensive effects of a cap and trade system, guys, both candidates are in favor of it!
Brief editorial comment.
I truly despise how truly misleading soundbite bullsh*t can go viral and yet those who have an obligation to put the actual information forward so that we can evaluate such nonsense are so darn slow to respond. This transcript and a truth test of the claims should have been out there by now. If one googles Obama, coal, and the SF Chronicle, the actual Chronicle audio and the Chronicle’s response is buried on page 2, and is arrived at through a Democratic Underground link, not from the primary source. It is a classic dirty trick to get misleading nonsense out right before the election, but in the internet age, the response should still be quick.

=========================
That statement pretty much says it all.
100 percent auction on carbon caps…
Chop those legs from a viable industry, that’s the Soviet way…
“100 percent carbon cap…”
That’s not what he said. Sure, a 100% auction would ensure that there would be some charge for pretty much any greenhouse gas emission, but it does not mean that any emissions would be prohibitively expensive.
http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/06/auction_revenue_report.html
That was a reasonable and non-trollish attempt at a gotcha. Nice try, but wrong. Do try again.
From today’s Los Angeles Times –
Marines and sailors are headed to Anbar province, but first, the pain of leaving family – again.
Camp Pendleton – The drill was new to some of the families attached to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369. But it was a familiar and heartbreaking scene for most who said goodbye yet again today to hundreds of Marines deploying to Iraq for repeat tours.
“This is our fourth and counting,” said Barbara Berrios, 25, whose husband is Sgt. Andre Berrios, also 25. Their son, Lucas, is 5 months old. “
Fossil fuels has been on the attack.
Now?
They are in full fledge retreat. Witness the lower gas prices.
Fossil fuels wanted to FORCE a coal fired plant on Kansas and Kansas said no.
I am no great fan of Obama as my record here shows. But he is correct here.
We SHOULD punish those who hold America back.
Bush/Cheney gave fossil fuels the carrot. How has that worked for us?
Time for the stick. NO more easy outs and government support for the fossil fuels monopoly.

“Some charge” would be the equivalent of Obama’s bankrupt statement.
Obama stated he was the first for 100 percent auction of carbon capping and evidently he meant it to mean that 1 unit of pollution = 1 unit of carbon cap charge.
Since pollution is measured in thousands to millions of cubic volumes, the result is obvious and matches up to Obama’s scenario of bankrupting coal companies who want to build new plants.
Why WOULD we sanction the construction of any more coal fired electric plants?
We waste SO much electricity. Do we want to subsidize waste?
Again, Obama is correct. We should make the embrace of the PAST painful for those who invest in it.
“Obama stated he was the first for 100 percent auction of carbon capping and evidently he meant it to mean that 1 unit of pollution = 1 unit of carbon cap charge.”
Again, he didn’t say that. 100% auction of cap and trade does not = 100% carbon capping. Indeed, 100% auction of carbon capping is an meaningless phrase. Obama’s statement does not mean that any emissions would be sufficient to bankrupt the coal industry.
(I am probably now getting into “feeding the troll” territory, because Regular uses deliberate overinterpretation as a weapon to get more responses).

So you are saying that Obama doesn’t mean what he actually says and needs spin masters and pundits to translate his words?
For example, both McCain’s and Obama’s proposals for using cap and trade to reduce emissions by 2050 could be accomplished through a 100% auction of cap and trade. However, the expense of the auction would vary. In neither proposal, however, would ANY emission, no matter how small, be prohibitively expensive. At some point, emissions would become prohibitively expensive, but again, that would be true under EITHER candidates proposals.
But to be fair, the prohibitively expensive point would be arrived at faster given Obama’s targets (and I don’t know whether McCain is proposing a 100% auction of cap and trade).
“So you are saying that Obama doesn’t mean what he actually says and needs spin masters and pundits to translate his words?”
Yep, we are at our usual point now.
Re: Regular
DNFTT
“At some point, emissions would become prohibitively expensive, but again, that would be true under EITHER candidates’ proposals.”
And that would be true regardless of whether there was a 100% auction on cap and trade. In any cap and trade, there comes a point where too much carbon or other greenhouse gas emissions become too expensive. That’s what any meaningful cap and trade system does.

Or are you stating that Obama is lying about being the first ‘to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system.’
100 percent auction is exactly that, “tit for tat”
- It is a deliberate attempt to drive operation costs prohibitively above production costs by a factor of 100 percent.
There was a time when this was the second most hit newspaper blog in the country.
I suspect that is no longer true.
THIS is due to Hank Price leaning on the editors to institute registration.

Once again, do you think that any scientist could be credible that rejects AGW as the problem the IPCC and the concensus claim it is?

John S (for Senile) McCain the Third (for Shrub’s 3rd term) on coal-fired power plants.
http://vodpod.com/pod/video/1729554
That’s interesting MonkeyHock, using a GW denier to try and win an argument. :D:
Voinovich is a denier, welcome to the club.
Palin just said that McCain wants to CUT taxes… and give a tax credit for every child… Hmmmmmm If Obama wants to raise taxes, it’s called Socialism….
If McCain wants to do it, it’s called…. WHAT??? Well, of course, it would be Socialism…. Duh…..
Chas,
Did yourstroke cause you to type “CUT” and “WHAT” in caps?
So which time was John S (for Senile) McCain the Third (for Shrub’s 3rd term) lying, “Regular?”
Re: Nathan
DNFTT (a worthless ad hominem troll at best)
MonkeyHawk,
I will go with option number 3.
You are lying.
That video you posted was a deliberate deception.
Chas,
I wouldn’t want there to be any confusion like the last time you used an acronym like STFU.
So what EXACTLY ( A stroke didn’t cause that caps usage ) do you mean when you say “DNFTT?”
Nathan, there was no deception in that video. You just cant handle the truth!
Chas,
And you are no Christian let alone a minister. You just love pretending to be both!
Meanwhile, real Marines are going back to Iraq for the third and fourth time, boy.
Nathan is as bad as McCain… pulling out all the LIES he can think of…. Nathan, do you think I really CARE what you think of my Faith?? Do you really think that??
The Truth is, you are LYING…
MonkeyHawk,
So were they fake Marines on their first tour?
Chas,
Silly me. I thought when you lied by saying that the video was the truth and not a deception you wanted to play.
PROVE it was a deception… I dont think you can prove that… The Fact is, Voinovich disgreed drastically with McCain… And more power to you, if you think you can prove otherwise… You know, of course, that all of those speeches are readily available in the Congressional Record.
You just cant handle the Truth. I am terribly sorry for that.
It will hurt you quite deeply, when President Obama does what he has said he will do.
I must return to bed now. I had a brief nap, but needed a good dose of benadryl. So, I will leave it to you all to sort it out.
May the elections be Fair…
blessings ALL Blessed be…
so mote it be.
Oh yes, and >>>>
Baruch attah Adonai, Elohenu;
Baruch attah Adonai, etah..
Amayn..
Chas,
The videos are taken from two seperate broadcasts. The angle on the camera is different and so is the background.
The editors added their own time stamp to the top left. That was not C-Span.
We have no time or date to show how they are connected or if McCain was really responding to the mans comments.
All we know is that they are both talking about an Amendment, but which one?
Then the video continued by putting fake headlines on the bottom of interviews.
So are you playing ignorant on purpose or are you really ignorant?
Nope… not me… but YOU sure are!! Nathan you will believe anything, as long as it is from a Republican!!
Are you going to try to tell me that Voinovich did NOT disagree with McCain??
Or are you just being stupid, as normal??
Why dont you attack Monkey… He posted the link… I didnt…
Chas,
I did comment to MonkeyHawk. You were the one who decided to jump in the middle with this comment:
“Nathan, there was no deception in that video. You just cant handle the truth!”
Idiot.
Chas,
Why don’t you stop claiming to be a Christian when you are not one?
When will you stop claiming to be a Marine?
Chas,
Never. However I have been through the training. I am a Marine. I can prove it.
You on the other hand? You refuse to answer a question dealing with the most basic fundamental of being a Christian.
Nathan, I wont stop claiming to be a Christian, anymore than you will stop claiming to be a Marine.
You know what? I am PROUD to say that I am not a Christian that fits into your microscopic box definition of what a Christian is. Hallelujah!!
Chas,
The difference is that I can prove I am a Marine and have no problem answering questions about being one.
You on the other hand?
You refuse to answer questions pertaining to the most basic fundamentals of being a Christian.
Oh, and I have answered all of your silly questions… Just because you arent bright enough to understand the answers… well, that would not be my problem, would it?
Blessed be…
May the holy sauce of the FSM be with you all!
