Old, funny McCain back — briefly

On an unusually high-quality “Saturday Night Live” (who knew Ben Affleck was so funny?), John McCain palled around with Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin and dropped by “Weekend Update.” Where has this McCain been hiding during the homestretch of the campaign? If he’d been around more, might the election eve polls look better for the GOP?

He wasn’t that funny, but he did appear to be enjoying himself, once he got in the groove of it. It was a cute skit and very nice that his wife was also a part of it. Laughing at oneself is good for the soul.

This is a Repub hurdle Mccain can’t hope to get over.
NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. factory activity contracted sharply in October, falling to its lowest in 26 years as the financial crisis ravaged the world’s largest economy and its trading partners around the globe.

The one bright spot in the report was that its main gauge of inflation, the prices paid measure, recorded its biggest one-month drop ever. This should allow the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates low to fight off what many fear will be a deep recession.

“Pretty grim. It means we’re in a recession, it’s as simple as that … a pretty solid manufacturing recession,” said Robert Macintosh, chief economist at Eaton Vance Corp in Boston. “The question is, ‘How long or deep is it going to be?’”

The Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity fell to 38.9 in October from 43.5 in September. That was well below the 50 level separating contraction from expansion, and a reading below 40 is exceptionally weak.

Economists had expected a reading of 41.5, according to the median of forecasts in a Reuters poll.

Remember the way Republicans laughed at Al Gore for not winnning his home state of Tennessee? Now we’ll see if Republicans really do have a sense of humor and laugh at McCain if he doesn’t win his own home state.

What’s good for the goose is good for gander, right?

If McCain is out of the Senate, he can always be a paid lobbyist for Airbus. Heck, he is already doing the job but just not officially on their payroll.

I had always thought that when Bob Dole ran for prez he should had appeared on SNL before. I also remember when Clinton was on Arsenio. I know Pat Buchannan tore him up this morning, but I thought it was a good move.

Pat’s just a crotchety old ahole anyway.
