The whole world was watching Tuesday night, and now it’s weighing in. CNN’s Christiane Amanpour sees a “tsunami of goodwill” accompanying Barack Obama’s victory, observing that the Times of London said Obama “had revitalized U.S. politics. In Germany, Der Spiegel called Obama’s rise ‘astonishing,’ while the Times of India called Obama an ‘advocate of strong partnership with India.’ Al-Jazeera said Obama had ‘surfed to power on a wave of voter discontent generated by the failures of President George Bush and the Republican Party’ and added that he faces ‘unique challenges.’ It continued that his country was ‘sick of war.’”

The Middle East Will Come to Hate Obama
November 6, 2008 | Nibras Kazimi
It’s no secret that the rest of the world is mesmerized by the phenomenon of Barack Obama. There are two elements to the story arc: one has it that America has finally overcome its legacy of slavery, while another narrative pushes the idea that America is the land of opportunity. But I fear that the Middle East is engrossed in the darker subplots of this story, and what speaks to them about Obama’s ascendency has little to do with what is good about America.
Arabs and Muslims don’t really care about the odiousness of slavery. Although African-Americans who convert to Islam are beholden to the notion that their new faith is egalitarian, their unpleasant blind spot fudges the fact that the Muslim code, or shari’ah, never outlawed slavery.
For now, Arabs and Muslims in the Middle East see two things in Obama: to them he’s a walking, talking apology, and an infiltrator. He’s an apology for the Bush years; America’s gift basket to the rest of the world for the fault of protecting itself. The hatred that has been whipped up against President George Bush by the Arab media—much of it owned and directed by America’s alleged allies, the Saudis and other Persian Gulf dynasties—has been unprecedented, much like the adulation presently, and temporarily, being given to Obama. However, Arab and Muslim fascination with Obama rests on the idea that he is their Trojan horse into the highest office in America, the gleeful whispers describe him at times to be a secret Muslim, and in another light, an ‘anti-imperialist’ leftist.
Obama will not only apologize for America’s imperial pretension, but shall work to reverse it. So the lofty expectations go.

I think it’s fantastic that Barack Obama won. If he does as well in the Presidency as he did in the campaign, he will most certainly help the US solve some of it’s problems. Barack Obama has one of the toughest work loads ahead of him and he is going to need America’s support.
Interesting that Al-Jazeera has positive things to say about the election. Isn’t that the organization that televised beheadings and other atrocities?
Al-Jazeera is a news organization Raptor so it’s not surprising that they’d comment on the elections. Why is it news to you that a news group would provide news?
Anyway, the positive reception Obama is receiving means Americans don’t have to be embarrassed to be American when going overseas. The calls into the Thomm Hartman show on Air America yesterday were from people all around the world. There was nothing but positive news to report.
You all are Funny you think that having Obammy and his Evil CLAN and followers is going to save the world?LMAO let me repeat that LMAO.
Lock your doors.
Nobody could say like “the ONION” does.

It’s great that the doors are open to reconciliation with our allies and the rest of the world. Hopefully we can restore our image of being the beacon for freedom and true democracy in the world.
I’m so proud of my country right now.
So what does a positive response from Columbia and India and and Germany etc. do for this country or for me?
I hear all of this and yet even I don’t know what it is supposedly suppose to accomplish.
Mary, you aren’t alone. Condalezza Rice is proud of her country to for electing the better candidate.

Linda, I saw that Onion link earlier. It’s one of the most sharp-edged pieces by them I’ve ever seen. Ouch! And definitely worthwhile.
I like this one too:
Black Man Given Nation’s Worst Job
November 5, 2008 | Issue 44•45
WASHINGTON—African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation’s broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. Denton, “It just goes to show you that, in this country, a black man still can’t catch a break.”
http://www.theonion.com/content/news_briefs/black_man_given_nations
“So what does a positive response from Columbia and India and and Germany etc. do for this country or for me?”
We’re just one of 200 countries on this planet…when the most powerful and sucessful country on earth has the respect and admiration of the other countries, it gives us more power to influnence the world to be a better place. It’s a win/win for everyone.
Great Onion article…and so true in it’s own twisted way, Rage. I love The Onion!
Maggotpunk-
Once again you try to make one thing into another.
Your statement “Condalezza Rice is proud of her country to for electing the better candidate.” has nothing to do with what she said. She said, per the link,
“”As an African-American, I’m especially proud,” Sec. Rice said on Wednesday, “because this is a country that’s been through a long journey in terms of overcoming wounds and making race not the factor in our lives. That work is not done, but yesterday was obviously an extraordinary step forward”
Had nothing to do with who was the better candidate, but go ahead and spin.
Apparently, Gener is clueless as to how dearly Bush’s “go it alone” cowboy diplomacy has cost us.
I’m not surprised.
When I travel out of the US, I notice how much what’s going on in our country affects people in other countries…we are connected to each other whether we want to be or not. We have a responsibility to the world to get our act together and live the values we claim we cherish. We ARE the beacon of hope to the world and the policies we enact affect everyone.
Under Bush, foreign policy meant keeping the multinational corporations happy, and not much else.
“It’s one of the most sharp-edged pieces by them I’ve ever seen. Ouch! And definitely worthwhile.” — Rage
——
Rage, I had read the one you quoted too. The one I posted the link to (had to go with tinyurl ’cause some of the words in the direct link put my comment to the graveyard of moderation!) was, as you say, sharp edged! Few would have the nerve to put it as that piece did! Sometimes a reputation as a fake-news, satirical source gives freedoms to say it like it is!
I know that here in Kansas such delivery of news in the satirical form and in the extremes of The Daily Report, Colbert Nation and the ONION are put into an entertainment category. And, they are entertaining in their delivery! But underlying the satire is the seriousness. Youth frequent these “fake news” sources. May be another category where the Republican Party has been “left behind.” They use an angry old white man to be entertaining in his delivery of the “news.” Somehow, that angry old white man doesn’t have the same appeal.
I’ll say..Rush Limbaugh just doesn’t have the same appeal as The Onion…and neither one can be taken seriously.
So true, Mary. But we know some people do take both seriously. Guess it’s because often both begin with a premise of a slanted belief and sensationalize from there.
The world will not be excited if the stock market continues to drop. We have borrowed a lot of money from other countries.
I have not checked but it seems to me that normally the market makes a jump after the elections. Does anyone have information on that?
obama will put condi in charge of all press pics, she knows that better than anybody else.she hasn’t done anything but pose for the cameras since she’s been there. don’t forget what hitler said: if you tell the people what you want them to believe over, and over enough times they will begin to believe every thing you say. like: change, change, change, i’m going to change the world if you’ll just vote for me.
It seems we live in an area where the news is so superficial that satire ends up filling in the blanks. Good satirists have always fulfilled this role, but to the extent the satire is mistaken for news itself, we have a problem.
I have not checked but it seems to me that normally the market makes a jump after the elections. Does anyone have information on that?
Even if true, these are not normal circumstances.

1. Do your own research. It’s all there on the inter-tubes.
2. The stock market (DJIA) was dropping pretty good before Obama got elected.
Like from 11,000 to 8,000.
Sheesh . . .
Next you’ll be blaming him for global warming.
“Sheesh . . .
Next you’ll be blaming him for global warming.”

He will be blamed for much but wouldn’t the deniers need to admit the problem if they attempted to affix the blame.
Monkeyhawk predicted recently that one millisecond after President Obama was sworn in he would be blamed for the world’s problems. Seems to have started earlier than his prediction. Maybe he didn’t “weight” their predisposition for reality denial strongly enough.

I haven’t heard Obama called Satan.
The Anti-Christ maybe (which I don’t agree with). But not Satan.
“Next you’ll be blaming him for global warming.”
We might. If there were such a thing.
Kia, I hadn’t heard that stuff either, but looks like there’s a few out there. This appears to be serious:

We might. If there were such a thing.
Heh, does that mean you’ll take it seriously the moment the man takes office? ;-)
The whole worlds political leaders might be “buzzing” about Obama, but the worlds investors are not expressing confidence:

BTW, after every election world leaders say positive things about the new US leadership.
What does make this election remarkable, are that added negative comments about the outgoing administration.
It’s not the world saying Obama is Godlike, it’s their dislike of Bush that’s news here.
At least Chris Matthews is honest. His “job” is to make the Obama presidency successful. Did y’all know that was the job of the press????
http://www.breitbart.tv/html/214673.html
Here are the terms for what Chris Matthews is doing. You lefties should be on this like a chicken on a June bug.
BLATANT MEDIA BIAS AND VIOLATION OF THE STANDARDS OF JOURNALISM
But you probably won’t be. Because it is not about principles. Surprise me.
outlander,
Are you just now figuring out that Chris Matthews is a lousy journalist? That’s been obvious for a long time.
Type his name in the search box here for some examples.

I look forward to Obamaco’s Tax on Breathing Intiative (sorry carbon credits). This will indeed help the global warming crises.
Obamaco usher’s in the New World Order. But $hit’ll need to be blown up, economy’s will have to crash, riot’s will have to happen and folks’ll have to die a little more before the lovey-dovey-ness can take place.
Can you handle that much change?
You are not supposed to know what”s going to happen. No one does. You didn’t expect a lot from George Bush and you got just that. You supported him even when you knew he was wrong. Now that it’s Obama, he has to do more for you than the guy you elected to office twice. To all of you who talk out of both sides of your neck…we see through you like glass. Your hidden bigotry fools no one but people just like you.Your lack of understanding of all things you are afraid of shows that you are the one who is short on patriotism and long on hate!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Obama’s win has globe buzzing”
———-
Obama’s win has got the stock market excited too. Up 10…, no wait DOWN 10%. The biggest two day loss since 1987.
Yuck.
The savior has his work cut out.
“Savior”?
Is that the latest talking point?
Well, I’m tempted to say, amen, revenge for Reagan’s utterly uncritical and extended coronation as precisely that, but this heathen isn’t even seeking a metaphorical “savior.” Nor, do I think, are most enthusiastic Obama supporters.
I’m thinking, maybe, we’ve moved beyond cornball sloganeering, and are looking at reality. Not that you can’t motivate people with slogans. “Change” didn’t start with Obama; Reagan used it (with great effect). “Yes we can” sums up a rejection of the inward-turning self-centered disdain of everything we could do this in this country that didn’t involve personal profit at the expense of someone else.
But slogans are slogans. The thing you seem not to realize is that this guy rose to power with the tentative acceptance of some of the most skeptical people in this country.
And we’re quite prepared to offer help.
With 52% of the popular vote in 2004 the media trumpeted how the nation was divided. With 52% of the popular vote, the media now trumpets how the nation is more united than ever. No double standard here just walk along and don’t ask questions.
Sadly the liberals have been given the free reign to kill babies. But fear not the non-biased media will stand up and fight for justice.
john_s,
Did you think that Reagan’s 50.7 percent was a mandate?
“Sadly the liberals have been given the free reign to kill babies.”
I know plenty of conservatives who chose to have abortions…

don’t you really mean to say – where is the profit in it for me? The Republicans are so obsessed with money and what’s in it for me-me-me that they cannot see the big picture. The rest of the world has been just waiting for Little King George to get off his litle throne and for some adult to finally take over the driver’s seat of the US and get this country back to what we once were – a strong country that strives to do the right thing and to offer our help to work towards peace.
But that’s the rub – peace does not make as much profit as war, does it?

actually the market did make a bigger jump than after Reagan was re-elected, but then you wouldn’t admit it even if it was proven to you by Moses bringing it down from the mountain on a stone tablet!
Right mom. Big jump alright. Unfortunately, right off a cliff!
