This is why they called it the YouTube election. Obama Girl, Iraq veteran Joe Cook, Sarah Silverman, Paris Hilton and a McCain-Obama dance-off rated places among Politico’s “10 most viral videos of the campaign.”

#1 YES WE CAN
Many years ago, (during the 1984 election season)I was on a plane talking with a man from Canada. He remarked how it is worrisome how the most powerful country in the world elects its leader with a process involving funny hats and balloons.
I wonder what he would say now…with youtube helping make up peoples’ minds based on a song or a video…?
Sad…very, very sad.
Rapt,
Yeah, the funny hats and balloons are a bit annoying, but it’s a fairly harmless tradition. We still throw rice at weddings, etc.
As far as songs go, I doubt you would find many more politically influential songs than “We Shall Overcome” and your pick of several antiwar songs of the Vietnam era- maybe a few hymns. Songs can be powerful stuff!
Videos may also have that power, but it’s a medium of expression that’s still exploring its potential, and it may find it by the next election cycle. Anyone who ignores the communication age does so at his own peril, as McCane found out!
The phenomenon of the internet profoundly changes the way news is gathered and disseminated. We no longer have professional reporters and editors determining what is and isn’t news and interpreting events for us. We are now charged with that responsibility and as a people we will need to exercise our judgement wisely. That means we all need to educate ourselves in our own and world affairs to the extent that we aren’t deluded by propaganda from whatever source. Can we do it? We’re going to have to to survive as a nation and a culture.
The videos are funny.
Here’s gif, not a video, but I still think it’s pretty funny, too.
(McCain voters be forwarned: you will not agree)
