25 years after ‘The Day After’

Were any of you bloggers among the nearly 100 million people who watched “The Day After” 25 years ago today? The TV movie was mostly filmed in Lawrence and was about a nuclear attack. Though we don’t worry as much anymore about the possibility of such an attack, that danger hasn’t receded, said the film’s director. “If anything,” he said, “it has grown worse, with atomic weapons no longer under control of stable governments.”

“Loose nukes” are yet another area that WorstPresidentEver negligently ignored.

dadman – Hey doesn’t Israel have a similar program for their youth and doesn’t everyone there have to serve their time in the military? What’s the difference – other than you just hate Obama?

And aren’t there Jesus Camps somewhere in the United States?

    Are you okay with those?

Umm, hate to interrupt, but yeah, I was 10 when I watched this. Didn’t scare me half as bad as this movie my Mom took me to at church. It dealt with Revelations…can’t remember the name of it at the moment though. Guillotines and bad people. Scary.

Yes, I watched it 25 years ago. The thing I most recall was the guessing game my wife and I had about identifying the places in Lawrence where it was filmed.

Don’t remember it being on, probably was too busy to watch TV. About that time, I had a lot of extra duties and didn’t have time to but eat and sleep.

But I must say, I do enjoy an ‘elephant walk’ …

That’s when every aircraft on an air force base is evacuated one right after another because of an impending nuclear attack.

It makes a marvelous bone shaking sound for about thirty minutes as fighters, tankers, bombers and cargo aircraft line up and ‘rev’ out to max engine, then take off.

The New York Times reported that the International Atomic Energy Agency report indicates that Iran “has now produced roughly enough nuclear material to make, with added purification, a single atom bomb.” “‘They clearly have enough material for a bomb,’ said Richard L. Garwin, a top nuclear physicist who helped invent the hydrogen bomb and has advised Washington for decades. ‘They know how to do the enrichment. Whether they know how to design a bomb, well, that’s another matter.’”

I remember my son and I watching it. I looked over at my son and he was crying. He was ten at the time. I had to turn the TV off and explain to him it was not real. Very freaky evening. It was done so well, it should be shown on a yearly basis, just to remind us what nuclear war really is.

Basically an ORI (Overall readiness inspection). I was at March AFB in 1964 when I went through my first: B52’s crabbing down the runway, wings almost flapping in the backwash of the previous B52. One of the most amazing sights I’ve ever seen.

“The Day After” was pretty good, but for sheer horror it was lightweight compared to the British film “Threads,” a TV movie from 1984 or so. Be prepared to be horrified.

As to Iran and nukes: the dream of nonproliferation is nice, but it isn’t practical. None of the physics behind atomic weapons are classified– any nation that can gain access to the active material and has a decent staff of techs and scientists can build one. You may not be happy or comfortable with it, but that’s reality.

I was up at KU when it was being filmed, and had some friends who ditched classes to be victims on the floor of Allen Fieldhouse. I just remember that the night it ran on TV, the dorm lobby was packed full of people, and by the time the movie ended you could hear a pin drop, it was so quiet. Everyone just got up and shuffled off without talking.

I was in high school and everyone my age was SURE Reagan was going to revive the draft and send us all off to war. That or blow up the world.

This DID have side benefits with the girls, who were sure all us guys were gonna get sent to die.

It’s an okay movie with some really intense parts.

    And one HILARIOUSLY glaring gaffe.

During one of the nuclear detonations, the blastwave is moving one direction and the American flag is flying in the other!

  37. Posted November 20, 2008 at 7:33 pm | Permalink

So,so movie. When liberals freak out they make movies like that. Just as “Dr. Strangelove” and “Failsafe” were released to influence the 1964 Goldwater/ Johnson Presidential election, “The Day After” was about getting Reagan defeated in 1984.
By the way, I’m a huge fan of “Dr. Strangelove” and I always kinda liked “Failsafe too. Another good movie about impending nuclear war from that time period is “The Bedford Incident”. Something about those old black and white movies really gets to you.

I remember watching it. The thing that freaked me out the most was that there were several missle silos within a few miles of where I lived. There were those cute little “M” signs to point them out. Shift change for McConnell airmen who worked at the silos was evident every day at a small gas ‘n go on K-42. That made it even more real. Quick geography hint: the same gas ‘n go from which a female was kidnapped a couple of months ago.
