When will politicians ever understand they are working for us not their careers…
Any health insurance plan that includes insurance companies indicates the insurance companies are still in the drivers seat. This is not what the people want. It is what the politicians want.
Thus far insurance companies have not contained the cost of health insurance or healthcare. The USA is spending nearly 3 times as much as other industrialized nations yet not receiving any better healthcare.
1500 different insurance companies will not do anything to reduce mountains and mountains of paper that require too much staffing. 1500 different policies is too many.
HR 676 National Health Insurance How Would It Help?
HR 676 = one insurance company = efficiency = reduced cost
HR 676 = patients choice across the board = removing the insurance companies from healthcare decisions = improved healthcare across the board.
HR 676 = removing the health insurance industry from the special interests = removing health insurance dollars from campaigns, obscene salaries and golden parachutes
HR 676 = no more bankruptcies due to insufficient health insurance coverage = no one losing homes
* HR 676 establishes an American-styled national health insurance program. The bill would create a publicly financed, privately delivered health care program that uses the already existing Medicare program by expanding and improving it to all U.S. residents, and all residents living in U.S. territories.
The goal of the HR 676 legislation is to ensure that all Americans, guaranteed by law, will have access to the highest quality and cost effective health care services regardless of ones employment, income, or health care status.
*With over 45-75 million uninsured Americans, and another 50 million who are under insured, it is time to change our inefficient and costly fragmented health care system to HR 676.
*Physicians For A National Health Program reports that under a HR 676 Medicare For All plan, we could save over $286 billion dollars a year in total health care costs.
*HR 676 would move citizens away from our present system where annual family premiums have increased upwards to $12,068 this year.
*HR 676 = Medicare for All would allow the United States to reduce its almost $2 trillion health care expenditure per year while covering all citizens.
HR 676 = Every person living in the United States and the U.S. Territories would receive a United States National Health Insurance Card and identification number once enrolled . No co-pays or deductibles are permissible under this act.

Obama to Ellen: I’m a Better Dancer Than McCain
Let’s save a bunch of bucks… Obama vs McCain on “Dancing with the Stars”. 8 hours of online voting… winner gets to be Prez!! The rest of the campaign money goes to Charity.
Samkan!
Now you’re speaking the language of America!
On another note, the ACLU may piss off the the most ardent of rednecks. But they are truly fighting for ALL the people on this one.
GO GET EM!!!!!!!!

People don’t want to see where a standing army in America will lead.
Al Qaeda supports John McCain. They see him as most likely to follow the failed policies of George W. Bush:

Another reason to vote for Obama in ‘08.
Ohio voter fraud
A reported 200,000 of the over 666,000 new registrations being held by Brunner’s office have serious problems such as drivers license or Social Security numbers that do not match up.
The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday ruled that the GOP as a private party lacked “standing to enforce HAVA’s requirements.” The Court did not address the merits of the case. Under Section 401 of HAVA, the U.S. Justice Department does have standing and it is under this federal authority that the Ohio Republican Congressional delegation is requesting action.
Since her selection as John McCain’s running mate, the Republican National Committee spent more than $150,000 on clothing and make-up for Gov. Sarah Palin, her husband, and even her infant son, it was reported on Tuesday evening.
-CNN
That’s a lot of Carhartts and work boots!
A bad digit on a registration card is not vote fraud…
We assume every effort will be made to assure all the legitimate new voters will be welcomed into joining the democratic process and the election officials will make every effort to clear up the discrepancies..
Meanwhile, from the innocent until proven guilty file:
“The head of a voter registration group hired by the California Republican Party was arrested over the weekend for allegedly lying about his address in the state in order to vote illegally, the office of California’s secretary of state announced Sunday.
Mark Anthony Jacoby, the owner of a signature-gathering firm called Young Political Majors, was taken into custody by Ontario police just after midnight Saturday and booked with a felony punishable by up to three years in prison.” -FOX News
Earth doctor..I agree with everything except for co pays. That cuts out a lot of abuse when people have to pay for some of their healthcare, even if it’s a token amount..say $10 for every doctor’s visit.
Even my Medicaid patients are more careful about their meds when they have to make the $3 co-pay. They question whether or not they really need to be on that med. When people don’t have any responsibility, it’s much more tempting to abuse the system. I heard that one of our home health patients went to the ER 27 times in one month…if she had a $10 co pay everytime she went, she wouldn’t have done it.
>HR 676 = Every person living in the United States and the U.S. Territories would receive a United States National Health Insurance Card and identification number once enrolled . No co-pays or deductibles are permissible under this act.<
No competition permissable.
No choices permissable.
The government has proven how efficient they are at running business… bailout on the horizon?
IMHO….
HR 676.. healthcare for everyone… extremely POOR healthcare for everyone and no choice to go elsewhere.
HR 676.. No Thank You!!
Figure out how to stop the fraud waste and abuse, and to cap the costs, no government takeovers!!
Real registration fraud, committed by a Republican for which he was arrested.

Barack Obama Makes Shocking confession!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BnLozS-TnM
Obama will send a check for at least $1,000 to the 37% of Americans who pay no income tax. It will also include those who pay as little as 4.4% of their income in federal taxes. This will result in nearly 47% of Americans no longer contributing to the federal income tax system.
Many of these same Americans with dependents qualify for a hand-out at tax time called the Unearned Income Credit (EIC). When the EIC was enacted by congress in the 1970’s, the intention was to help poor American families burdened with the pay roll tax.
The end result is that almost half of America will be feeding off the other half (those who pay one dollar or more in federal income taxes).
There’s no voter fraud till Election Day… ALL registrations are submitted to the Election Supervisor/Commissioner…. IF they are faulty, hey are thrown out…. Obviously, the Dallas Cowboys registrations in Las Vegas, are phony… They will not be registered there… They will not VOTE there… no voter fraud there…. Same goes for Mickey and Minnie Mouse…. LOL
Why is this such a difficult thing to grasp?? Or is LYING about it just more convenient for your Candidate??
Lets keep it REAL for a change, CONS…
Good point Amway, it’s a sad state of affairs that 40% of Americans work and earn so little that they qualify for Reagan’s EIC. I agree with you, the wealth should be spread around so the 40% figure is lessened, wages increased and more people can pay income taxes because they are earning more.

Dumb ass…
Once ballots are cast and counted, the challenge to them becomes much more cumbersome, tied in legal knots and much more expensive to do so.
Use your brain for a change, instead of thinking out of your bung hole.
Regular (anti-Semite), you don’t understand the issues but that’s normal for you. It would have been registration fraud if ACORN threw out the registration forms. The law requires ACORN to turn in all forms, even the ones they flagged as potentially fraudulent. You’re whining because they didn’t break the law.
Oh a $1,000 check? What is the source for this?
This cut and paste does not even pass the smell test.
And I ALWAYS look to bAM bAM to supply accurate information about Senator Obama! (Not)
Dumb Ass you say??? READ AGAIN what I posted…. There wont BE any votes cast on phony registrations!! Mickey and Minnie wont be voting this year, or any year…. OPEN YOUR EYES NITWIT!!
Here’s how the Republicans love to spend money, $150k on Palin’s clothes:

dumb ass…
“Oh a $1,000 check? What is the source for this?”
There is no check, the Republicans are lying again. It’s a $1,000 tax credit. I thought Republicans were in favor of less taxes? Apparently that’s only for the rich and the $5,000 tax credit for children.
I’VE GOT IT!!! A perfect (near perfect) solution for this Voter Registration Crap…. Let’s pass laws in ll 50 States, that you must REGISTER to vote in the County where you live, at the VOTER REGISTRATION OFFICE where you live…. or at least at their web site, or by mail in…
OUTLAW INDEPENDENT VOTER REGISTRATION ORGANIZATIONS FROM EVEN EXISTING!!!
What Republicans tend to ignore about the tax credit is the fact that the working poor pay taxes on their labor. The tax credit would be on the social security taxes. The rebate will be a minimum of $500. The rich get a cut off on the amount of social security taxes they have to pay but Republicans aren’t whining about that tax cut.
McCain promised a tax rebate of $5,000 but apparently the Republicans aren’t whining about that one. The $5,000 will be for health care but those who receive health care will have that taxed as part of their income. We are supposed to assume that $5,000 is enough to cover a health care plan for people like McCain with a history of cancer or Sarah Palin with a child with down syndrome.
As usual Republicans don’t present all the facts but if they did they wouldn’t have much to criticize Democrats about in comparison to the Republicans.
Amway —-
i believe that if you pull out your last 1040 book, and thumb to the page where you read the amounts availble for the EIC, AND the requirements for receiving such….
You will find that there is both a BOTTOM cut off limit as well as an UPPER cut off limit, for qualifying for the EIC…
So, basically your gripe is, as usual, a bunch of BS… ooooops watch where you step!!
Essentially, AMWAY, to get an EARNED INCOME CREDIT, you gotta have an EARNED INCOME!!
Is that difficult to understand???
Maggotpunk…. take that one step further….
If the employer no longer pays for the health insurance of the employee (which is normally tax deductible) then that amount, is now part of the employer’s INCOME…. thus, putting the Employer into a HIGHER tax bracket….
NOW, the employee, with no health insurance provided by the employer (commonly as much as $12,000 for family premiums) NOW McCain proposes to give the employee –get this… $5,000… with which McCain says the employee can now use to buy health insurance for his/her family….
Yea, sure, right….
McCain didnt do well in basic math, I guess…
Don’t worry about McCain, when he loses the election he’ll still have his three government health care programs to fall back on. Remember, it’s not socialism as long as rich people benefit.
After the election it would be great the see Cheney, Bush, McCain, Palin and their spouses compete in a special political edition of “Dancing with the Stars”. My money would be on Cheney.
Isn’t Dick Cheney still dead?
“Isn’t Dick Cheney still dead?”
He is, but nobody has told him.
Readers be aware.
MOST states have laws that require employers to grant time off for workers to vote.
McCain still has 13 days to announce 13 new, different plans . . . and still time for Palin to decide go home forever to take care of her genetically damaged baby – who DOES look great in all those new clothes!!!!!
no David and Maggotpunk — That is Generalissimo Francisco Franco of Spain that is still — Dead (ala chevy chase, on weekend update… orig. cast, SNL)
If Cheney is dead, would they tell us? Who becomes VP if he is dead?
Nobody replaces the VP when the VP dies. If the Pres and VP dies then Nancy Pelosi becomes President.
hey, mxyz…. Throw in Bill and Hillary to the dance mix, and my bet is on Bill/Hillary..
As I understand, a VP does not HAVE to be replaced due to death, or resignation… It is up to the discretion of the President…. As happened two times to Nixon…. Nixon had THREE VP’s serve with him…. Agnew, Rockefeller, and Ford…
From electoral-vote.com….
“All the Metrics Point to an Obama Win
Back in 2007, when practically every pundit saw Rudy Giuliani as the inevitable Republican nominee, political guru Charlie Cook said he (Cook) was more likely to win the Tour de France than the Republicans were to nominate a thrice-married, gay-friendly, Catholic New Yorker. Cook didn’t win the Tour de France and Giuliani didn’t win the nomination, so Cook gets a certain amount of credit. Now he says there are six factors pointing to an Obama win in two weeks:
1. No candidate this far back two weeks out has ever won.
2. Early voting is going strong and even if something big happens, those votes are already cast.
3. The Democrats have a 10% advantage in party registration; in 2004 it was even.
4. Obama is outspending McCain 4 to 1 in many states.
5. There is no evidence for the so-called Bradley effect in the past 15 years.
6. Obama is safe in all the Kerry states and ahead in half a dozen states Bush won.
Election Analysis by Pollster Steve Lombardo
Pollster Steve Lombardo also has a nice analysis of where the presidential election stands now. His major points: (1) Obama won the debates big time, (2) Obama is playing offense all over the map while McCain is playing defense, (3) Obama’s massive fundraising is a huge advantage, and (4) more people identify as Democrats than as Republicans by an 8% margin. None of these factors look good for McCain.
McCain is Dragging Down Republican Candidates
Stu Rothenberg, another political analyst, wrote a column saying that not only does McCain appear to have no coattails, he appears to be badly hurting downticket Republicans and could end up causing a number of them to go down to defeat. While the effect is biggest in swing districts, it is also causing problems in relatively solid Republican districts.
Polls are typically open from 6am – 7pm. Unless you’re working a 12 hr shift, why would there be a need to take off work to vote?
Although I’m sure Junior would – just to show his defiance.
And I actually dont remember if HHH came on as VP after Kennedy was killed, or if he came on in the 1964 Election….
Is she a maverick, or a clotheshorse?
The Republican National Committee paid more than $150,000 for clothing, makeup and accessories in September that apparently went to Gov. Sarah Palin and her family, according to an article on Politico.com.
That included $9,447.71 to Macy’s, $789.72 to Barneys New York, $5,102.71 to Bloomingdales; $49,425.74 to Saks Fifth Avenue and $4,902.45 to Atelier.
In one heavyweight shopping trip in early September, $75,062.63 was spent at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, a host city of the Republican National Convention.
Those forms also documented $4,716.49 on hair and makeup in September, expenses that were not incurred in August.

And the Republicans railed about Edward’s haircut.
I guess it takes a lot more $$$ to make a pig pretty.
A serious comment by Bill Lear (Lear jet) a smart, successful business man and an Independent.
Most Americans are aware of Bill Lear, because of his Lear Jet business; however, he has accomplished much more, as you can see at this link: William P. Lear — Britannica Online Encyclopedia (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/333965/William-P-Lear#tab=active~checked%2Citems~checked&title=William%20P.%20Lear%20–%20Britannica%20Online%20Encyclopedia).
His opinions are worth a read:
A Humble Plea to McCain and Obama Supporters:
Dear friends,
I am truly astonished by the ignorance Obama supporters have displayed in their quest to get someone – ANYONE – into the White House. Now, wait a minute. I can well understand your dislike or even hatred of our clown, GWB, but he is not the root cause of all of our problems. Our Congress is. And a change there would be welcomed by all. You ain’t gonna get it done with Obama. You gotta fire the whole damnable crooked Congress. (Read my book, “BERNIE’S WAR!”).
Perhaps I’m looking at all of this from a different perspective than you because my life experiences have been so different from yours. I’m
80-years old and have traveled the world where I’ve seen a great deal. I spent five years on active duty as a fighter pilot in the USAF and another seven years flying with the Air National Guard in California and Texas as well as a few years flying in the USAF Reserve. I spent three years on active duty in Germany flying Czech border patrol with “cold guns” in aircraft inferior to the MIG during the Korean “Police Action” when it was thought that Korea was a diversion for a Soviet invasion of Western Europe .
I lived abroad for a total of 28 years. Three years in Germany, twenty years in Switzerland and five years in Great Britain where I was based doing “spook” work for the U.S. behind the Iron Curtain before it fell. During that era of the Cold War I ventured to Moscow, Prague, Warsaw, Bucharest, Peshawar, Pakistan and Bulgaria posing as a Swiss French-speaking arms dealer purchasing weapons we surreptitiously supplied to the Afghani Mujahedeen in their successful fight against the Soviets – all of which came back to haunt us. I’ve been there and done that and have had close associations with top government people in Germany , the Netherlands and Great Britain . I’ve had more foreign affair experience than Obama could ever dream of and, yet, wouldn’t have the temerity to deign myself “Presidential” material; although I feel eminently more qualified to judge who would NOT be best for our country. My long-time world experience should count for something in my plea to you to abandon this miscreant flake. You will only be doing yourself and our country an enormous disservice if you persist in your support of this flash-in-the-pan opportunist. On this, you MUST trust me.
I’ve associated closely with European royalty and African politicians. I’ve traveled to the Far East to observe their cultures. My point is that Obama, although formally well educated and a brilliant orator, is a neophyte when it comes to understanding the world and is uniquely unqualified for the job as President of these great United States . His knowledge of economics is nil and his tax proposals absurd and life-threatening to the U.S. not only in economic terms but in preserving our national security as well. I don’t want a “citizen of the world” to be President, I want a citizen of the good old USA to be President. Screw the rest of the world as they have well and truly screwed us. The time has come for us to awaken and start looking after ourselves. Now THAT would be CHANGE if that’s what you’re looking for.
While McCain has abstained from playing “the race-card”, Obama is playing it to the hilt even though he’s technically not an African-American. To qualify for this distinction you must be at least one-sixth black. Obama is only one-eighth. His father would be, as he was one-sixth. No, Obama is more Muslim than black yet he trades on his blackness.
The larger question I have about him is that we really don’t know much about him other than what HE tells us, what we read on blogs and from some serious non-partisan investigators whose factual reports are, unfortunately, generally ignored and which receive precious little media exposure.
I, as a registered Independent, a military veteran and a patriot, beseech you to put aside party considerations and vote for the lesser of the two evils. Yes, I am NOT a McCain supporter, but he is, at least, not a flake, doesn’t carry Muslim baggage and is a PROVEN hero and patriot WITH experience. It’s not a party issue. It’s all about electing the best we can trust with what we’ve got to work with. Mr. Obama is NOT that guy.
Please, please rethink your voting position. Thanks for reading my innermost thoughts. I care about all of you, but I care more about our country. Please help me to do both.
William P. (Bill) Lear, Jr.
Hey, tee time…. There are HUNDREDS of hospital workers who work 12 hour shifts… You want to disenfranchise all of those good folks??? LOL
Seems like I only remember the polls being open from 7 a.m. — 8 p.m. But, I could be wrong….
Oh yea, fire fighters also work LONG shifts as well… 24 on/24 off I think….

Truman didn’t have a Veep until after ‘48. Coolidge didn’t have a Veep. Teddy Roosevelt didn’t until the ‘08 election was over.
Early voting starts today. I am headed down town to lock in my vote for some transformational change today!
Didn’t the Bushies mail out $600 checks this year to all taxpayers?

She’s such a maverick, the way she is so corrupt but manages to say, with a straight face, how she is opposed to corruption. Buy that woman another $3,000 outfit as a reward.
I guess that means the Republicans will want Bristol as Secretary of State since she has so much executive experience conducting official state business for Alaska.
Bill is a 80-something billionaire jet-setter and he clearly knows what is good for me, a 50-something working man.

It’s not like she was a sewer worker before she was selected for the nomination.
Presumably she already had clothes appropriate for public meetings and appearance. Presumably she didn’t participate in candidate debates in mucklucks and a parka.
Okay, so maybe she needs some lighter outfits for warm-weather campaign visits.
But $150,000 at Neiman-Marcus and Sax 5th Avenue, and $4000 for a daily comb-out?
The Republic Party probably could have elected another congressman with that money. But they have their financial priorities.

Dave, Jr is still alive and he’s 80.
I wonder if Palin will put the $150,000 in clothes on her tax return as income?
“….$4000 for a daily comb-out?”
Are these the same people who bitched and moaned over Edwards and Clinton getting $400 or $600 hair cuts???
Vanity of vanities…. all is vanity….
They run the corpse (geared to lose) against Obama. Same thing as Dole (corpse) against Clinton.
We fall for it everytime. I love this country.
Enough Joe the Plumber; here’s to Kareem the Soldier
WASHINGTON — “Joe the Plumber” was only one of two Americans injected into the presidential election this past week. The other was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, whom former Secretary of State Colin Powell invoked in his endorsement Sunday of Barack Obama.
Khan was a 20-year-old soldier from Manahawkin, N.J., who wanted to enlist in the Army from the time he was 10. He was an all-American boy who visited Disney World after he completed his training at Fort Benning, Ga., and made his comrades in Iraq watch “Saving Private Ryan” every week.
He was also a Muslim who joined the military, his father said, in part to show his countrymen that not all Muslims are terrorists.
“He was an American soldier first,” said his father, Feroze Khan. “But he also looked at fighting in this war as fighting for his faith. He was fighting radicalism.”
Khan was killed by an improvised explosive device in August 2007 along with four other soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter while searching a house in Baqouba, Iraq. He’s one of four Muslims who served in Iraq or Afghanistan and are buried in Arlington National Cemetery, where 512 troops from those wars now rest.
About 3,700 of the U.S. military’s 1.4 million troops are Muslims, according to Defense Department estimates.
Khan, a child of immigrant parents from Trinidad, was 14 when the Sept. 11 attacks happened. Feroze Khan said he remembered his son watching in stunned silence: “I could tell that inside a lot of things were going through his head.”
Three years later, Feroze honored his son’s request and allowed him to enlist him in the Army. “I told him: ‘You are going to the Army.’ I never said there is a war going on in a Muslim country. I didn’t want him to get any ideas that he was fighting (against) his religion.”
Feroze kept his fears for his son’s safety to himself.
His son was assigned to the Stryker Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Lewis, Wash., deployed to Iraq in 2006 and fought on Baghdad’s Haifa Street, a Sunni insurgent stronghold.
His tour was extended as part of the surge of additional U.S. forces to Iraq, and he called or messaged home often until he was deployed to restive Diyala province, where he was under fire too often to contact home regularly.
But he prayed every day, his father said.
One Sunday morning, his son sent an instant message: “Hey Dad. Are you there?” Feroze Khan was out, and he saw the message when he returned.
A few hours later, his ex-wife called. Soldiers had knocked on her door in Maryland. Their only child was dead.
A few minutes later, soldiers appeared at Khan’s door. “I guess it helped that I knew beforehand,” he said. “There are no words to describe it.”
Kareem Khan was a month from finishing his tour when he was killed.
On Sunday, Powell said that Khan’s sacrifice and service had swayed him to discuss the way that Muslims have been portrayed in the presidential campaign, and the contention that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is a Muslim.
Obama “is a Christian,” Powell said. “He has always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, ‘What if he is?’ Is there something wrong with being Muslim in this country? The answer is no. That is not America.” He added: “I am troubled that within the (Republican) Party we have these kinds of expressions” suggesting that Obama is a Muslim, and that if he is, he likely associates with terrorists.
Powell said that he felt strongly about the issue after he saw a photo of Khan’s tombstone in the New Yorker magazine. In the black-and-white picture, Khan’s mother is resting her head on her son’s tombstone. On each side of the stone are flowers, and in between is a copy of the Quran. On the face of the tombstone is a crescent and star, indicating that the soldier buried there is a Muslim.
“He was an American,” Powell said.

There’s no voter fraud till Election Day…”
That is not true Chas. You need to look at each state and determine if it is a crime to complete a voter registration/absentee ballot request fraudulently.
It is a crime.
Here’s something from the looney fundy file. Homeschooling mom thinks it’s just better if there was a death penalty for being gay.
“Since there is no hope for gays, we would be better off without them. They are recruiters and not reproducers so the safest solution would be the death penalty.”

WTF kind of stupid rant is this??? Who writes this crap???
Surely this has to be phony!!!
No, Regular, he referenced Lear Jet. Junior was not Lear Jet. I’ve met them both.
Besides, what he said was just more of the same old, same old GOP party line. Why should anybody listen to him just because he is related to a famous person?

” It’s a $1,000 tax credit. I thought Republicans were in favor of less taxes? Apparently that’s only for the rich and the $5,000 tax credit for children.”

Obama cannot give a tax cut to 95% of Americans.
Obama lied.
“Regular” tries to bail out “Boxlock” –
It was pretty clear “Boxlock” confused the real Bill Lear with the letter-writer heir to the Learjet fortune who admits he’s been living off daddy’s money in Europe for the past 28 years.

Essentially, AMWAY, to get an EARNED INCOME CREDIT, you gotta have an EARNED INCOME!!

Just to, ahem, stir the pot of controversy today –
I’d like to hijack the Open Thread today for a bit and ask if anyone has a kick-ass chili recipe.
The weather’s right and I found some good lean coarse-ground beef in the freezer and, frankly, I’ve been kinda lazy with my chili-making in the past several years.
Anybody got a recipe or suggestions or preferences. Like canned beans plain or dry beans soaked-and-cooked? Spiced beans? NO BEANS WHATSOEVER!! (That one’s always shouted, with a Texas accent.) Canned tomatoes? Rotel tomatoes? Dry peppers? Cumin? Hungarian paprika? Et cetera.
What’s your secret? What’s your passion?

AWFUL NEWS
Obama has a money problem. And you know what it is? He might run out of time to spend all the money he has! Election Day might come and go before Obama can spend the $5 million a day he is now raising. (If this does happen, I suggest he borrow a page from Oprah and buy everyone in America a Pontiac. Just as a gesture.)

Oh a $1,000 check? What is the source for this?
From the mouth of the One:
I will cut taxes–cut taxes–for 95% of all working families. In an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raising taxes on the middle-class.
So, if it is just a tax ‘credit’, how on earth is Obama going to CUT TAXES for 95% of Americans?
He can only do so by sending a check (they are calling it a “refundable credit”).
Or, you have to admit Obama lied.
40% pay no federal income tax at all.
40% + 95%= 135%
Amway, perhaps by reducing the tax rate on those who make less than $250,000 as Obama has mentioned on numerous occassions?

What Republicans tend to ignore about the tax credit is the fact that the working poor pay taxes on their labor. The tax credit would be on the social security taxes.”
And that makes no sense at all.
First, the Social Security (FICA) is not a tax, it a program which Democrats LOVE and swear to NEVER TAKE AWAY! It is, as the democrats love to say a program to ensure the poor are not left behind in their old age. It is an investment that the wage earner is making to their future, and the future of other retirees.
Everyone contributes and gets their own statement with their earnings and expected SS check.
This is not a burden placed on people by republicans – it is an investment in all Americans retirement.
Second, you didn’t mention medicare. Similar to above: It is an insurance policy to help the worker when he retires pay medical costs.
Both programs are utopia: Democrats refuse to acknowledge there is anything wrong with the program and life is grand.
Social Security is paid for out of the general fund. There is no magical trust fund. Ditto Medicare.
They are two of the nations biggest entitlement programs and make up a large part of the annual budget.
If you further remove the taxpayer from contributing, like all Americans do, you will reduce funds available in the general fund to pay for the outlay to others.
Someone has to pay in. Ownership is paying in. You want to pay out an entitlement where some people don’t have to pay in?
And the EIC already exists to provide the protection for those truly poor (cough) against the payroll tax.
(The dreaded payroll tax is a democratic feature of American life.)
Basically, 50% of Americans pay nothing AND get a handout later in life.
You are nuts and this makes no sense at all.
Ownership in America?
Nobody washes a rental car.
Amway, perhaps by reducing the tax rate on those who make less than $250,000 as Obama has mentioned on numerous occassions?
200,000 on single filers. But yes, by reducing the taxes on taxpayers.
But that includes the 40% not paying at all.
Chas YOUR INSINUATION IS QUITE PLAIN…
Chas if you want to continue being ignorant, who am I to stop you?
MH –
I could tell you my chili recipe, but I’d have to kill you. :-)
Actually, I have no set recipe. The first key, however, is not to use beef. Use venison (it’s so good). I’m out of venison, for now, at least (hopefully, I’ll fix that come December).
If you use beef, drain and rise thoroughly; try to take most of the grease out. I use Bush’s Hot beans, and diced Rotel tomatoes. one can each per pound of meat. William’s seasoning, but use only about half what the packet recommends.
From there, season to taste. I usually just open the icebox and start throwing stuff in. BGQ sauce, ketchup, mustard, some picante sauce, some juice from jalepeno pepper slices, onion, garlic, cajun seasoning, . . . .
Chili is beyond partisan. And the cooking is almost as much fun as the eating (with shredded monterey jack and sour cream). Enjoy.
…and fresh hot cornbread (NOT johnnycaks) sticks on the side, “GMC 70.”
Anybody ever eaten chili in Cincinnati? I’m told it’s a passion there, but I’ve never been.
Dixon’s Chili in Kansas City still has a place in Independence. That was Harry S Truman’s favorite place to go when he was President.
They impose a “10-cent ketchup penalty.” They’re purists.
Ok Monkeyhawk, here goes. Long and detailed chili talk.
I prefer stew meat or chuck roast cut into small chunks over ground beef, but we’ll go with what ya got.
Depending on how lean it is or isnt, add a little olive oil to a heavy bottom pot, and brown the meat. Dont steam it until it is gray, brown it and get a little color. Season the meat with a good amount of Tony Chacherre’s seasoning. Remove browned meat and drain.
In the pan drippings, saute some coarsly chopped onion, garlic, finely chopped jalapeno, and bell pepper if you like it. When I say “some” onion, you should know I like almost equal parts of meat and onions. The veggies will eventually just melt down.
Meanwhile…
Take some dried red chilies and soak them to rehydrate. Then open them up, remove the seeds, scrape out the pulp, and add it to the meat. You can also add some chipoltles in adobo sauce, along with the sauce. Not too many, ’cause the heat can easily get away from you. Not that I mind, but some folks do. I kinda think if it doesnt burn going out as well as burn going in, it isnt worth making.
Then add some regular ground chili powder, about a quater cup to two pounds of meat. If you are really into it, toast some cumin seeds in a dry skillet and grind them into powder in your coffee grinder. Then be sure to buy a new grinder and save it for all spices! Or you can just use a short quarter cup of regular ground cumin.
Add some dried oregano, Mexican oregano if you can get it, but regular oregano will do, about two to three tablespoons. Be sure to rub and crush the dried oregano leaves before adding. That releases the oils and flavors.
Add chicken stock to cover and simmer away. The longer the better, and dont forget to stir and keep the heat low so it doesnt stick and burn. You can add beer and/or water as the liquid cooks down, so you can get the consistancy you like.
I add whole canned tomatoes, chopped, but that will get me thrown out of Texas if I say it too loud. V-8 juice is good too if you are wanting some tomato flavor.
I dont add beans, but the folks who do say canned pintos work just as well as the dried and soaked kind. If you use dried and soaked, cook them and drain them before adding to the chili. Otherwise? Put a hose up yer ass and capture all the methane you will generate…
Now, come closer, because this is the real secret to true Texas chili.
About a hour before serving, make a slurry of masa harina and water and add to the chili. Be sure to cook it for a while after adding so you dont get that “raw” flour flavor. Really. This is the secret. About a quarter cup of masa mixed with water to form a slurry about like thick pancake batter.
In Beaumont, as you may recall, they serve chili over cooked white rice. But then, they serve everything over cooked white rice. I like that better than beans, and it’s good if you get it too hot. Like there is such a thing as too hot…
In the panhandle, as Chas will attest, they serve the cooked chili OVER the pinto beans instead of putting beans in it. I like that too, and in fact, my pals in Beaumont used to put the beans over the rice and then the chili over all, topped with shredded cheddar that you shred yourself. It really is better to grate your own than to use the bagged kind, but whatever works, works. You can use jack cheese as well.
I like to top my chili with the cheese, some finely chopped raw onion, finely chopped serrano or jalapeno, and some finely chopped cilantro. I do NOT find the topping to be optional. It is mandatory for me.
Oh yeah and in some parts of Texas, they serve the chili over frito chips, NOT tortilla chips. And then the raw onion, pepper and cilantro mix. In Beaumont and the panhandle, they like cornbread on the side.
Let’s see.. have I forgotten anything?
Oh yeah. Copious quantities of beer to wash it all down. I’m a Coors light kinda girl, but in Texas they’d like Lone Star, Pearl, or Shiner Bock. Whatever.
Take two Tums, and call me in the morning!
…and fresh hot cornbread (NOT johnnycaks) sticks on the side, “GMC 70.”
Amen. Yummy.
Amway, all taxes support programs. So if you want to define it that way then Americans aren’t taxed at all. Did you have a point? Who are these 50% of Americans that don’t pay taxes? Is your argument that 50% of the population is unemployed? Or is it your argument that you don’t know anything about the taxation system?

Exactly AMWay but the mathmatically challenged will slobber over this one all day and never admit that you can’t reduce taxes on those who never pay taxes in the first place. Now because he has been called out on this one he is saying he really meant the payroll taxes – you know state taxes SUTA, federal taxes FUTA, ss taxes FICA, medicare taxes. A person running for prez should know that with the exception of FUTA and SUTA you are paying premiums which will buy you a check in your retirement and insurance in your old age.
We are talking about putting more people on gov welfare and Chas doesn’t get it.
Heheheh. And if you like Ohio chili, which I cant imagine, but they do…
Brown the burger, add some chili powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and pepper and tomato sauce. Cook and serve over spaghetti.
I know, I know. But there is no accounting for taste. They like that stuff over hot dogs too! And they do the two way, with spaghetti, three way with that and cheese, four way adds chopped onions, and five way adds it all with beans.
I just threw that in because Ohio is a swing state and dont want to offend the voters there…
KFG
I don’t care what your politics is. But given all you’ve written about cooking on this blog – good God, girl – I may be in love. By comparison, I’m a piker, and I make a damn good chili.
Wow.
Yes, MH. Forgot about the beer, both in the Chili and to accompany same. Please forgive me, KFG. And make mine a Shiner Bock.
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/economy/
Obama says “cut taxes–for 95% of all working families”
YOU say: “CUT TAXES for 95% of Americans”? You twist what they are saying to change the meaning.
They are two different things.
Oops, didnt see GMC’s post before I posted mine. I agree with the deer meat, but if I’m using it, I make a meat mixture of one third deer, one third beef, and one third sausage or ground pork. It needs the fat.
And GMC? “From there, season to taste. I usually just open the icebox and start throwing stuff in. BGQ sauce, ketchup, mustard,”
Dude! Dude :( Dude….
Heheheheh. Ice box? Exactly how old are you?
Just teasing. My family still says davenport instead of couch….
I use Picante sauce instead of diced tomatoes in my chili.
brown meat of choice, add 3 table spoons of chili powder if the meat is a cut, or 2 table spoons, if the meat is ground.
add garlic cloves (depends on how much you like garlic)
jalapeno juice if you want to kick it up a notch, about 2-4 tablespoons.
Serve with flour or corn tortillas (the Mexican spoon)
Everyone – no matter what benefits one receives, no matter what one’s station – should pay some taxes. And that means income taxes, apart from FICA, sales, etc, etc. I don’t care if it’s just a $5 bill; it’s the principle of the thing. EVERYONE should have to pay something.
You take more interest in something you have to contribute to. Gov’t must be seen as more than a source of goodies.
Thanks GMC. You’d weigh as much as I do if you lived with me! My roomie wont even eat dinner anymore except on weekends. She’s trying to lose the weight she gained since she moved in.
Heheheh.
I know people who also add worchestershire sauce to the meat and coffee to the broth too.
But ya know, they never lived in Texas, where chili is a religion.
Viva Terlingua!
Actually they do that in Missouri too. There used to be a place Freds and Reds in Joplin on Main Street that served great spagetti. we would drive 30 miles just to eat there. It was bascially very spicy chili on spagetti.
My husband is a real chili eater and got addicted to open face burgers at a 50’s restaurant in Marysville, TN. They slather on the chili with the burger, bun and cheese under it. Throw a few chopped onions on top and it is indigestion on a bun. The restaurant is Belairs because there is a 1957 Belair sitting in the middle of the restaurant and they only play the really good 50’s songs. Lots of Elvis.
Missouri is a swing state. Tennessee not so much.
Sounds good folks….I off to buy extra toilet paper before I start cookin’!
I=I’m, ya dig?
At our house, it’s still an icebox. Since my grandfather called it that, and no, I don’t remember ever actually having an icebox.
But my chili is variable. I’m not a purist, I just like what I like. As noted before, I will freely and without reservation bow to the superior cook.
And as many have noted (and a few have tasted, unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure) when it comes to cooks on this blog, you may well be the queen. Salute.
No more Business as Usual: No more handouts
“Sept. 22—Nearly one-third of the nation’s largest and most profitable corporations paid no federal income tax between 2001 and 2003—yet still received billions of dollars in tax rebates, according to a new study.
Corporate Income Taxes in the Bush Years, released Sept. 22 by Citizens for Tax Justice (CTJ) and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, finds 82 of 275 companies CTJ examined enjoyed at least one year in 2001–2003 in which they paid no federal income taxes yet received billions of dollars in outright tax rebates. In 2003 alone, 46 of the companies paid no federal income taxes and in some cases, received tax rebates.
The companies, all on the Fortune 500 list, were profitable in each of the three years analyzed.
General Electric Co., which lobbies extensively for tax breaks, topped the list of corporate tax-break recipients, receiving nearly $10 billion in tax subsidies over the three-year period, according to the report.”

Buffalo meat also is good. Low fat, cooks quickly. Everybody has his/her own chili recipe to swear by. I like mine a lot, but I have had purists (whatever they are) sneer at me. I don’t care. I like it.
BTW, if you are in a hurry and it is a gray, gloomy chili day, Wendy’s does a pretty good job for a quick fixer-upper at lunch. May well be where I end up today.
Used to be a place in Hays when I went to college, the Mecca Hamburger House. Best burgers and chili in the universe. But they closed it down after the last kid got out of college. A shame.

Against a backdrop of GOP-backed allegations that it is involved in voter registration fraud, the activist ACORN group has been targeted with emails and voicemails threatening its staff as well as Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
One of the aggressive messages, secured by HuffPost’s OffTheBus, says that “all the ni**ers,” including Obama, are going to get “assassinated” and “hung.”
The threats come at a time when the McCain-Palin campaign has been publicly linking the non-profit Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now directly to the Obama campaign while suggesting the group is engaged in a coordinated effort to register ineligible voters.
The threatening and often explicitly racist messages parallel recent vandalism of ACORN offices and the assault Saturday of an Obama campaign volunteer assumed to be associated with the group.

I kind of remember the Mecca. Didnt it morph into Bike’s burger bar and the Vernie’s? Vernie’s does good chili and burgers too. Not the purist kind, but the Hays kind. And Vernie’s does the BEST green bean dumpling soup in Kansas. Next to Lisa’s at Cleland’s that is, but she doesnt make it much anymore.
Vernie died a couple of years ago :( but the food lives on! :)

Heheh. I had a request for that too, and I put it on the menu as “Da Mayor’s Burger” because he liked it so well.
One bun, open face, two one third pound patties, smothered in my chili, topped with cheese and onions and jalapenos for Da Mayor. It was a platefull of food spilling over the edges.
It ended up being the best selling burger. Hell, I offered seconds on it for free if they could finish it.

South Main in Joplin. Yup. Spagetti Red, from Fred and Reds. I remember. Good stuff.
BTW, I’m making chili this weekend for a benefit car show in Carterville, Mo. I may well have to shameless steal some of KFG’s secrets. My nephew just got back from his second surgury to combat testicular cancer (after removal of one testicle and chemo, they discovered it had gotten into his lymphatic system). 25 years old, and newly married, too. I’m told the second surgury went well.
So it’s off a benefit Car Show and Chili Cookoff. I’ll be off to show the old GMC, cook chili, and help raise some $$$ for medical and transportation (he’s got the same doctor who treated Lance Armstrong).
If anyone would like to join us, come on along. Saturday, 11:00 in Carterville, downtown. KFG, if you’re looking for a place to cook some Texas chili . . .
I heard you play a fine resonant solo on the bass commode as well.

Only by request.
He has even talked Red Robin into serving it. Doesn’t think it is as good as Belairs but Tenn. is a bit far to drive for lunch.
Good Luck GMC!!!
Sounds like fun GMC, but I’ll have to pass. Feel free to use any of my “secrets”. Just let me know if you win, place or show!
On next week’s episode, Carne Guisada.
THAT oughta bring Sol out of hiding!

Wish I had some mustard greens to go with the corn bread….
We have a young friend Adam Frey. He wrestles for Cornell, 22 years old and going through second chemo treatment for same kind of cancer. Had a bad car accident in January and while being treated they found the cancer.
It makes me wonder about all of the additives these good sports guy add to their diets.

And it will only make the problem worse.
No more Business as Usual: No more handouts
“Corporate Income Taxes”
Dow drops over 300 points as weak corporate earnings pour in.
Get it David?
Here’s what the socialist ultimately want: The unions running controlling the government:
“PEABODY, Massachusetts (AP) — Police in Peabody, Massachusetts, could be getting holiday pay on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in what may be a first-of-its-kind contract provision.
A proposed new contract between the city and the police union would make the anniversary a paid holiday. The proposed contract still needs budgetary approval from the city council.
Officers would receive an extra 25 percent pay for working September 11.”

Lol Boxlock!
But judging by the posters here, I’d guess these are the last hold outs!
Or to be positive, in their minds, the first wave of a vast new liberal Kansas.
The hardest thing for most people to understand is that if the gov is creating the jobs then growth is stagnant or going backwards. If you aren’t bringing new money in then the economy suffers.
Corporations have to stay healthy. People have to be in a position to buy products. This spurs more manufacturing and more jobs.
It is a circle and if one part become unhealthy the circle is broken and the economy suffers.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED – the economy
Mass layoffs highest since 9/11
Government report says job cuts of 50 or more up significantly last month.

And McCain will do even more!
WASHINGTON — World leaders will meet Nov. 15 in Washington to address the global financial crisis — the first in a series of summits to mitigate what economists predict could be a long and deep downturn, a senior Bush administration official said.
I wish Bush would just shut up and close the door. Everytime he ventures outside, the markets drop.
Why can’t he just just let the next president deal with the financial mess?
Maybe at least things might level off through the holidays at least (and the January selling season).
American_Way,
My posts above are also a little experiment to see just how long I now last being able to post to the blog. Ha!
If I suddenly disappear…..you’ll know what happened to me.

“People have to be in a position to buy products. This spurs more manufacturing and more jobs.

Agreed. That is why Keynesian economics calls for public spending during a downturn – to ‘prime the pump.’ I’d like to see us catch up on infrastructure while simultaneously getting people back to work.
Corporations have to stay healthy. People have to be in a position to buy products. This spurs more manufacturing and more jobs.
OKobserver, you just went way over many of the posters heads.
If they just think for a moment about the 700 billion dollar bailout for a moment, they might realize whom the feds are really trying to help.
And if they can keep their yap quiet another minute to think about “why” both parties support that, they might get it.
The FBI could have put an effort into preventing the financial mess caused by Republican economic policy but Bush preferred to have the FBI investigating mosques rather than white collar crime.

Kinda like they could have been fighting terrorism but they preferred to use the NSA to listen into phone sex calls.
McCain can bring four more years of the same.
That is why Keynesian economics calls for public spending during a downturn – to ‘prime the pump.’
bth, that has been the engine which has been driving the American economy for decades now. Even the original EITC was the brainchild of those who believed if you give money to the masses – you will reap the rewards of the spending frenzy. (Republicans started the Unearned Income Credit).
That was fine when you needed a quick “jolt”. It was fine when you were not dealing with international financial ties like we have today. It also requires capital to make that “fresh” investment.
It doesn’t work so well when your pocketbook is 10 trillion dollars below “E”.
The last Stimulus Act this spring did zilch this summer. Throwing more money at the problem is no longer the proper solution when you don’t have the money to throw.
AmWay – you will note that I ‘held my nose’ and support the bailout.
“It doesn’t work so well when your pocketbook is 10 trillion dollars below “E”.”
I agree. That is why the flip side of Keynes is to run surpluses during good times. Unfortunately the Republics balooned the debt.
As long as you liberals refuse to actually look at why this economic crisis happened and do nothing more than try to find every way to blame it on Bush then you are not part of the solution.
You are nothing more than petty partisan hacks.
Ben I agree with that. I don’t remember the work projects during the 30s and 40s but we still drive on those brick streets. This did help with the infrastructure and also provided jobs.
Maybe that is what is needed. I don’t know. What I do know is that Obama’s plan to give money to people who pay no taxes now will encourage others to do less. Being comfortable is one reason some people go to work everyday. If you can do that without going to work many will choose not to go.
We are a consumer nation. We have to have production output (goodsservices) to sell abroad and reduce the trade deficit which is draining the nations resources.
No economic theory contains a permanent solution to getting something and never producing anything.
A public works program is another example, which I’d suggest before another simple handout.
If he’s not lying again this should upset a bunch of the sit on their butts DimLibs that want a handout and redistribution, which this is anyway.
Ops, so sorry BJ.
“Facing criticism from John McCain that his (you know the ‘ONE’) tax plan constitutes “welfare,” Barack Obama recently added a work requirement to one of his proposals.”
Oh darn….you mean they might have to actually work?????
I’m sure the DimLibs will find a way around that, but like I said I think Obama is just responding with a lie to factual criticism.
Ben I have to agree with AMway and Nathan. We collectively have made this problem. We were complacent to set back and throw barbs at the opposing political party not acknowledging that there was good and bad on both sides of the aisle.
Politicians loved it. They didn’t have to be responsive to the public. They just had to set us at each others throats and keep doing business as usual. This election is no different.
McCain wasn’t my first choice and I at one time thought I would vote for Obama. I don’t feel that way any longer. McCain has the most experience and we need that in the White House. Obama was involved in one of the biggest social experiments in history when with the Annenberg group. It failed miserably and they ran through $50 million before realizing it was a failure.
We have to have better than that. Even Hillary Clinton said his biggest achievement was that he wrote a letter in 2002. They played the race card against Bill or Hillary would be duking it out with McCain.
American_Way, I also would suggest a public works project before another “simple handout”. That is one way to help the consumer while getting something of value in return. We saw what little effect the “stimulus package” earlier in the year had (although my wife and I used ours to fund, in part, our trip to Maine for our daughter’s commencement, so we applied it where it could do some good).
As to production of goods and services to sell abroad to reduce the trade deficit, good point; however, there will need to be goods and services desired by those abroad produced. At this point, the strengthening dollar makes U.S. goods and services more expensive, which counters the ability to export more. The rising dollar, combined with a decreased demand (for the moment) for oil and related products has had, IMHO, more effect on reducing the trade deficit than anything else, as the price of oil (of which the U.S. imports a substantial quantity) has dropped.
Whatever is done must, IMHO, be more than just handing money out, which, if this happens, will more likely be used (at least in part) for debt payments rather than new consumption.
bth
‘held my nose’ and support the bailout.
That is why the flip side of Keynes is to run surpluses during good times.”
Noted and we are light-years away from any surpluses. That is, if we honestly try to deal with the national debt, which Clinton increased 1.5 trillion too, during a time of “surpluses”.
And keynes actually exploits the poor. Throwing money at less fortunate in hopes they spend it requires people to be foolish and short-sighted behavior.
If they saved, or invested, or used the money to pay off existing debt – they would stimulate nothing.
The later “may” be what happened this summer. Instead of spending, everyone was fearful or in debt up to their a-ses already. Maybe people actually used the last stimulus to pay off bills.
Hence no affect on buying.
It’s the economy stoopid
By Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — Financial insecurity is forcing Wal-Mart (WMT) shoppers to change buying habits, cut credit card use and live more paycheck-to-paycheck, the CEO of the U.S. division of the world’s largest retailer said Tuesday.
Economic pain is leading to what Eduardo Castro-Wright termed “disturbing behaviors” among shoppers over the past few months.
For instance, more families are buying baby formula at the start of the month when they are more likely to have money. In the past, he said, the chain hadn’t noticed such surges in formula sales.
A double-digit decline in credit card use at Wal-Mart stores in the second quarter this year sharply contrasts with the first quarter of 2007, when a vibrant economy was resulting in double-digit increases in card use.
“Credit has been declining dramatically,” said the Ecuador-born executive who has run Wal-Mart Stores USA for three years. “That decline in credit means people have to make choices about how they spend their hard-earned money.”
Many don’t have a choice when it comes to their form of payment.
“They have maxed out on their credit limits,” Castro-Wright said in an interview after a speech to Town Hall Los Angeles, a non-profit that provides a forum for public figures and opinion makers. “Customers are really going through some hard times.”
The observations are significant because of Wal-Mart’s massive scope, with 4,000 U.S. stores. Castro-Wright said nine out of 10 American families shop at Wal-Mart at least once a year.
How financial hurt is showing:
•Money worries. About 80% of shoppers cite “personal financial security” as their top concern in internal surveys, up from 65% just a few months earlier, he said. A year ago, the price of gasoline was the top concern.
More consumers worry: “Will I have enough to put on the table so my family can eat?” Castro-Wright added.
•Fewer name brands. Wal-Mart has seen a rise in purchases of staples instead of discretionary items. Shoppers have more then doubled purchases of private-label items, eschewing name brands. Castro-Wright said, however, that Wal-Mart has no immediate plans to change the stores’ merchandise mix to take advantage of the trend.
•Changing shopping patterns. Some shoppers aren’t coming to the stores as often so they don’t have to drive as much. Others, who may be unemployed, are coming more frequently to buy a few items when they have money in their pockets, he said.
And more sales are showing up around paydays. Wal-Mart has seen a 2.5% increase in sales at the start and the middle of the month, when workers are paid, compared with four months ago.
Wal-Mart is responding to slower growth by cutting back on capital investment and not opening as many new stores.
“Whatever is done must, IMHO, be more than just handing money out”
I honestly didn’t need it the last time, and don’t need it now. Before anyone slams me for not giving it back – I am just as greedy as anyone else and kept it.
Maybe some do. Maybe liberals would support means testing and giving a special handout to the poor.
Then argue over who that really, really is.
But a publics work program would work for me. I’d love to see people picking up trash, sweeping my sidewalk, and building things in national parks. But I’m afraid the unions will nix any of that.
I remember in the 80s when my husband lost a job with BFGoodrich that he had held for 23 years of paying high union dues. We looked at our credit card balances and said never again. We paid them off by ‘88, while starting our own family business and working 16 hours or more per day to make it go. We came away from our Union experience with a different take than BJ. After 23 years the company paid us a lump sum and said adios. The union said this was Ok. What else could they have said.
I worked outside the business to make enough for us to live on and when the business could finally support us started banking every dime I made because our entire retirement was tied up in the business. I also became a republican when we filed our first tax return as an S-Corp.
I’m not bragging. I’m saying we had a plan. No more debt. Save as much as we could and don’t look to a corporation or government to take care of you. They won’t do it forever and then you are left without the tools to help yourself.
We have to elect a government that treats us like adults and not dependent children.
“It’s the economy stoopid”
I think you would have had to been blindfolded with earplugs, and tied up somewhere dark and humid to not realize that.
But it is BOTH parties who got us where we are.
It will take a rare breed to acknowledge that.
“That is, if we honestly try to deal with the national debt, which Clinton increased 1.5 trillion too, during a time of “surpluses”.”
That increase was interest accrual on the debt he inherited. In fact, he covered a large part of that interest wirh operating surpluses.
okob – I have acknowledged that BOTH parties contributed to this mess – I seem to recall one on ‘your side’ who claims it is 100% one party – the Democrats – fault. Speaking of petty partisan hacks …
“I remember in the ”
That reminds me of a song I’ve been wanting to share. I’d suggest all of us memorize it. Most Americans are short-sighted and live in the here and now (present company not excluded). We don’t want to think about nor do we realize how long this economic downturn will last.
“Brother, Can You Spare a Dime,” lyrics by Yip Harburg, music by Jay Gorney (1931)
They used to tell me I was building a dream, and so I followed the mob,
When there was earth to plow, or guns to bear, I was always there right on the job.
They used to tell me I was building a dream, with peace and glory ahead,
Why should I be standing in line, just waiting for bread?
Once I built a railroad, I made it run, made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad; now it’s done. Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once I built a tower, up to the sun, brick, and rivet, and lime;
Once I built a tower, now it’s done. Brother, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!
Say, don’t you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.
Why don’t you remember, I’m your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits, gee we looked swell,
Full of that Yankee Doodly Dum,
Half a million boots went slogging through Hell,
And I was the kid with the drum!
Say, don’t you remember, they called me Al; it was Al all the time.
Say, don’t you remember, I’m your pal? Buddy, can you spare a dime?
And memorize this one as a pick me upper:
“Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries,” lyrics by Lew Brown, music by Ray Henderson (1931)
People are queer, they’re always crowing, scrambling and rushing about;
Why don’t they stop someday, address themselves this way?
Why are we here? Where are we going? It’s time that we found out.
We’re not here to stay; we’re on a short holiday.
Life is just a bowl of cherries.
Don’t take it serious; it’s too mysterious.
You work, you save, you worry so,
But you can’t take your dough when you go, go, go.
So keep repeating it’s the berries,
The strongest oak must fall,
The sweet things in life, to you were just loaned
So how can you lose what you’ve never owned?
Life is just a bowl of cherries,
So live and laugh at it all.
Life is just a bowl of cherries.
Don’t take it serious; it’s too mysterious.
At eight each morning I have got a date,
To take my plunge ’round the Empire State.
You’ll admit it’s not the berries,
In a building that’s so tall;
There’s a guy in the show, the girls love to kiss;
Get thousands a week just for crooning like this:
Life is just a bowl of . . . aw, nuts!
So live and laugh at it all!
which Clinton increased 1.5 trillion too, during a time of “surpluses”.”
That increase was
Does it matter WHY? Clinton left our children 1.5 trillion dollars further in the hole. He didn’t reduce it with any surplus magic.
(and I only mentioned it the first time because you had posted about republicans “ballooning” the debt. It could be argued a congress controlled by demcorats for the last two years approved it all and second record earmarks amount.)
So I am guilty as anyone finger pointing.
OMG, Sarah Palin arrested!

“So I am guilty as anyone finger pointing.”
That you are. Short of repudiating the debt there was no way for Clinton to not have the interest accrual.
Maggot can you just not help yourself with the lies? You make yourself the joke of the blog because of crap like this. She is one of yours. She had drugs that should be legal anyway you say. She probably thought the gov was picking up the check.
She should be arrested. We are each accountable for what we do. No one else.
Ben but how long has the debt accumulated? Was it always the repubs that added to it. In all honesty who does bear the responsibility for the national debt.
Some might say it is the populus for continuing to put politicians in place that tell us in advance that they plan to spend more than they take in. That warn us they will raise our taxes.
I guess we need to shoulder some of the blame for this debt.
Where do you pull out gems like this? Upon what do you base this conclusion? You make this stuff up? What is your source for such a statement?

Chas, socialism isn’t communism.
Yea I KNOW that Maggot punk… Now, tell that to the Repubs!! They keep getting it all confused!! Like bitching about how Socialism wants everybody to earn the same amount, regardless of the job they have…
Welll…let’s see. Let’s say person A works hard, goes to college, maybe graduate school, continues to work hard and is successful. Obama will punitively tax him if he is successful enough to make over $250k a year.
Person B, dropped out of middle school, works at menial jobs when he bothers working, but doesn’t worry about it, because the ‘rich’ are going to be taxed to death to support him.
Sounds like Socialism to me. The end result? Destruction of any incentive to achieve since the government will take away any successes.
Raptor, thats just a plain and simple crock of BuLL…!! You LIE often???
Keep in mind that blogger, Dan Froomkin, of the Washington Post is far from an objective source on GWB – here is a question I asked him about the movie “W.” and his response:
Kansas: Hey Dan. It has occurred to me that you might be an uniquely qualified movie reviewer — have you seen Oliver Stone’s “W.”? If you have, what did you think of it?
Dan Froomkin: I have seen it. First off, I found it boring as hell. Secondly, I found it more critical than I had expected, given the reviews. (I thought the scene with Bush acting like a buffoon with the wounded soldier was scorching.) Thirdly, I thought Stone portrayed the dissolute and wasted nature of Bush’s youth and early adulthood a lot more vividly than the dissolute and wasted nature of his presidency. But finally, I appreciated that people were leaving the theater with an important question in their minds: How the heck did we let that happen? But all in all, deeply flawed
“Al-Qaeda will have to support McCain in the coming election,” said a commentary posted Monday on the extremist Web site al-Hesbah, which is closely linked to the terrorist group. It said the Arizona Republican would continue the “failing march of his predecessor,” President Bush.

Expect an election-eve video from bin-Laden that speaks well of Obama, the idea, of course, pissing people off into voting for McCain.
Kinda like in 2004.
what part of it is a lie, chas? Did Obama say he will decrease taxes on anyone making less than 250k? Was that a lie?
Does punishing people for being successful reduce incentives? Is that a lie?
What part of it is a lie? Or is that just your standard answer to anything you disagree with? that and calling someone a troll or a shill and thus dismiss anything they say?
Punishing people for being productive??? THAT is your lie, dude… Get some new smoke for that hash pipe…. You guys keep making up CRAP, and think maybe there is still somebody dumb enough to buy it…. OR, maybe you do it to try to convince yourselves that you are not out on a limb…
All I know is that you are constantly, ad nauseum misrepresenting Obama and what Obama says…
I guess you will have to deal with your own deceit after Nov. 4…. But just remember, you deceived yourselves!!
Rage — My wife and I jokingly say that Bin Laden isnt hard to find… He’s the tall skinny buy, clearing off all that brush on the tractor down at the Crawford Ranch….
Now, you tell me he is going to make an election eve announcement backing Obama… I remember that one from 2004… Wow, that one really sucked…. But I didnt believe it was Bin Laden in 2004… Didnt look or sound right….
But NOW??? Who knows!!
Y’know…you can hurl your invectives and accusations all you want. Your untrue insults about using illegal drugs doesn’t give much credence to your outrage.
Unfairly taxing people who have become successful is punishment. Obama has clearly said he will lower taxes for people making less than 250K. That is not a misrepresentation.
Take a breath, chas. You are hyperventilating again. Grow up and realize that you are not always right, that people have different opinions than you, and you can’t do a thing about it.
Uh Oh.. just to prove how bogus polling is:

I call it truthful and marxist. You know it is true and yelling at Raptor is your only defense of the socialist wannabe you are backing Chas.
Bad news for McCain? Just saw a news item about mammoth early voting in Georgia and across the country. They are expecting record turnout. Given that GOP voters tend to vote ‘hell or high water’ and Democratic voters tend to have less certain turnout might this indicate that the latter group is voting more than usual? Might this, in turn, help Obama at the expense of McCain?

39% on > $250k = Obama’s (and Bill Clinton’s) evil SOCIALISM!
Who’s to blame for the biggest financial catastrophe of our time? There are plenty of culprits, but one candidate for lead perp is former Sen. Phil Gramm. Eight years ago, as part of a decades-long anti-regulatory crusade, Gramm pulled a sly legislative maneuver that greased the way to the multibillion-dollar subprime meltdown. Yet has Gramm been banished from the corridors of power? Reviled as the villain who bankrupted Middle America? Hardly. Now a well-paid executive at a Swiss bank, Gramm cochairs Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign and advises the Republican candidate on economic matters. He’s been mentioned as a possible Treasury secretary should McCain win. That’s right: A guy who helped screw up the global financial system could end up in charge of US economic policy. Talk about a market failure.
Gramm’s long been a handmaiden to Big Finance. In the 1990s, as chairman of the Senate banking committee, he routinely turned down Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Arthur Levitt’s requests for more money to police Wall Street; during this period, the sec’s workload shot up 80 percent, but its staff grew only 20 percent. Gramm also opposed an sec rule that would have prohibited accounting firms from getting too close to the companies they audited—at one point, according to Levitt’s memoir, he warned the sec chairman that if the commission adopted the rule, its funding would be cut. And in 1999, Gramm pushed through a historic banking deregulation bill that decimated Depression-era firewalls between commercial banks, investment banks, insurance companies, and securities firms—setting off a wave of merger mania.
But Gramm’s most cunning coup on behalf of his friends in the financial services industry—friends who gave him millions over his 24-year congressional career—came on December 15, 2000. It was an especially tense time in Washington. Only two days earlier, the Supreme Court had issued its decision on Bush v. Gore. President Bill Clinton and the Republican-controlled Congress were locked in a budget showdown. It was the perfect moment for a wily senator to game the system. As Congress and the White House were hurriedly hammering out a $384-billion omnibus spending bill, Gramm slipped in a 262-page measure called the Commodity Futures Modernization Act. Written with the help of financial industry lobbyists and cosponsored by Senator Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), the chairman of the agriculture committee, the measure had been considered dead—even by Gramm. Few lawmakers had either the opportunity or inclination to read the version of the bill Gramm inserted. “Nobody in either chamber had any knowledge of what was going on or what was in it,” says a congressional aide familiar with the bill’s history.
It’s not exactly like Gramm hid his handiwork—far from it. The balding and bespectacled Texan strode onto the Senate floor to hail the act’s inclusion into the must-pass budget package. But only an expert, or a lobbyist, could have followed what Gramm was saying. The act, he declared, would ensure that neither the sec nor the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (cftc) got into the business of regulating newfangled financial products called swaps—and would thus “protect financial institutions from overregulation” and “position our financial services industries to be world leaders into the new century.”

You sit here and argue over which Party is to blame… From what I have seen so far, it isnt the Democrats OR Republicans that are to blame — and yet it is both… The Party that is to blame, regardless of WHAT letter they have after their name, is the PARTY OF GREED!! THE PARTY OF AVARICE…. THE PARTY OF SELFISHNESS, AND EGOTISTICAL LUST FOR POWER!!
Now if we can get past those Crises…. just maybe we can turn this mess around!!
But, I for one, have had it with the LYING RACIST REMARKS about a terriffic man who has made his way in this world as good as anybody out there…. and he is just two weeks away from the presidency…. BECAUSE HE LOVES HIS COUNTRY!!!
Hell, if all he wanted was power, he could have gone to Kenya, and staged a coup, and had all the power he could hope for…
BUT HE LOVES HIS COUNTRY…. THERE IS NO WHITE AMERICA, OR BLACK AMERICA, OR RED AMERICA, OR BROWN AMERICA, OR YELLOW AMERICA…
THERE IS JUST AMERICA!!! AND IF WE DONT GET OUR OLLECTIVE ACTS TOGETHER, WE WILL BE THE CAUSE OF THAT INTERNATIONAL CRISIS JOE BIDEN TALKED ABOUT….
Shoot, maybe thats the Crisis he meant!! There are sure enough possibilities to go around…. Maybe the international Crisis that is headed our way, is the one of our own making…. the fractionalization of this great nation… (or whats left of it)…
You all want to do something???
OK —- See a need, and MEET it…. Find a hurt and HEAL it… Get your noses out of your own checkbooks long enough to take a really GOOD LOOK at this world that we call home!!
DO SOMETHING TO HELP, INSTEAD OF LIVING ON A CONSTANT DIET OF WHO WE CAN BLAME!!!
OK… I’m out of here for now…. Have a nice day… Enjoy the World Series…. Drop a buck along a busy street when nobody else is looking…. Peace, out….
grow up chas. Your opinion is an opinion just as mine is an opinion. Your dislike of my opinion does not make it wrong, nor does it justify your immature carrying on.
Did I say anything about approval of Reg’s crude comments? No..you just assume it in your mistaken “wisdom” and lumping together everyone you disagree with. You have a serious problem with differing opinions, don’t you? Show me where I ranted? Show me where I “flamed”?
You are right about one thing, I am not interesting in discussion with an immature closed minded person like you.

“Wherever John McCain appears on the stump in these waning days of the presidential campaign, he is always accompanied by his imaginary friend “Joe the Plumber,” but it is the specter of Karl Marx that lurks just offstage. Reverting back to the Republicanism of eons ago, when he was just a child, he inveighs against the “socialist” design of Barack Obama’s tax platform. This delusional ranting, like so much of Mr. McCain’s behavior this year, tell us nothing about Mr. Obama (or socialism!) but much about him.”

Latest AP Poll
The poll, which found Obama at 44 percent and McCain at 43 percent, supports what some Republicans and Democrats privately have said in recent days: that the race narrowed after the third debate as GOP-leaning voters drifted home to their party and McCain’s “Joe the plumber” analogy struck a chord.

Today’s Polls
We have 16 presidential polls today. Obama continues to lead in Colorado (Obama +5) and Pennsylvania (Obama +10). North Carolina and Nevada are still tied. North Carolina is quite the cliffhanger, with the presidential, senatorial, and gubernatorial races all essentially tied. McCain is hanging onto West Virginia (McCain +9), which seemed to be slipping for a while.

“Dobson asked whether Palin was discouraged by polls showing the GOP ticket behind.
“To me, it motivates us, makes us work that much harder,” Palin said. “And it also strengthens my faith, because I’m going to know, at the end of the day, putting this in God’s hands, that the right thing for America will be done at the end of the day on Nov. 4. So I’m not discouraged at all.”
…
“It is that intercession that is so needed and so greatly appreciated,” Palin told Dobson. “And I can feel it too, Dr. Dobson. I can feel the power of prayer, and that strength that is provided through our prayer warriors across this nation.”
She continued: “When we hear along the rope lines that people are interceding for us and praying for us, it’s our reminder to do the same, to put this all in God’s hands, to seek his perfect will for this nation, and to of course seek his wisdom and guidance in putting this nation back on the right track.”
…
Palin said the campaign had to have faith that its message will be heard “minus the filter of the mainstream media.”
“That filter has to be erased,” she said. “So we have to have faith in the wisdom of the people that they’ll understand what our message is. But even bigger that then, I have to have that faith that God is going to help us get that message out there.” ”

Thanks to a loophole in federal law the answer, experts say, is yes.
Handily, the loophole was codified into law by the landmark campaign finance law passed by her ticketmate, Sen. John McCain. “

You mean like McCain, when he quit campaigning in Michigan?
“It would seem as though only an idiot would rely on polls.”
The McCain campaign is RADICALLY altering strategy and generally retreating most everywhere because of those polls. But you get no argument from me that they are idiots.
Strategically, this is about where McCain is at.
He is no longer able to yell at Obama to get off his lawn.
Obama has taken McCain’s lawn front AND back. The Bentley in the garage? Hauled off. Obama parked a Prius there.
Obama’s folks are sharing drinks in McCain’s living room. In fact, they’ve largely taken over his house.
McCain still holds a few bedrooms with access to the bathroom and the back door. He’s got the doors locked but Sarah Palin keeps opening them so she can run to the kitchen and grab ice.
The thread starter is quite correct. Earth Doctor wrote:
“HR 676 = one insurance company = efficiency = reduced cost
No co-pays or deductibles are permissible under this act.”
The fact is there is now NO support for business as usual. In fact the US health care system never was usual. It is an abaration in the world, and like a cancer it kills.

———–
Cosmos, a little primer for you on faith, so that you might understand where Mrs. Palin is coming from. Jesus instructs us in Matthew 6:25-27 not to worry. Not always easy to do. But we can turn over our cares over to God, because we know he cares for us. We don’t have to carry the burden. We do what we humanly can, but we know that if God wants something to come to pass, it will come to pass. No power in the universe could prevent it.
So, we don’t know what the election outcome will be. But in any event you can bet Sarah Palin is not going to fret about it either way.

Cosmos — your 2nd link isnt working right..
Chas,
Sorry. . . the 2nd link is on the page at the 1st link.
It’s the airline’s company trademark, that had to be removed from Obama’s campaign plane.
Yea, I thought maybe it was… Didnt we hash that spurilous argument a few months ago?? When Granny called me a bunch of not so nice things??
I hear Obama’s plane has a rather foul odor and is quite messy.
“ANTI” cites the voices in his head –
“I hear Obama’s plane has a rather foul odor and is quite messy.”
What?!
No discarded crack pipes on the deck?
AP Reporters have stated the plane is in disarray.
Here’s tiahrt’s lame attempt to explain why he voted against the rescue. Note, there’s no suggestion on what to do, except be a reason for the do nothing congress.
Thank you for contacting me regarding the federal government’s recent interventions in the financial markets. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to contact me on this important issue. Watching investments and retirement funds decline is stressful. And I am eager to see this market dcc] me reversed.
I spent many long days in Washington talking with Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Chris Cox, Kansas bankers, business leaders, investors in Kansas, and other knowledgeable financial sources. I spent hours reading through the legislation and studying this issue. It was not a simple task.
My decision to vote against the $800 bailout bill on Friday, October 3’’ came with great disappointment for I too am concerned about the economic situation. Yet, Congress missed the opportunity to correct the causes of our current crisis, again adding federal debt burdens on our children. But I understand that Congress must do something.
Unfortunately, this bill contained no tough reforms needed to correct the mistakes that got us into this mess nor does it hold anyone accountable. This proposal establishes a “Review Board” tasked with providing oversight for implementing the massive bailout. But the board consists of individuals who should have been responsible for keeping America out of this mess: the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, the Treasury Secretary, the Federal Home Finance Agency Director, the Securities and Exchange Commission chair, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary.
Worse yet, Sec. 112 of this bill allows foreign financial institutions who hold certain troubled assets that have failed or defaulted to participate in this massive government bailout. The bailout bill invites foreign financial institutions to participate, spending billions of dollars we do not have to rescue foreign lenders that invested in toxic loans.
I also voted against this proposal because Wall Street executives who practiced deceit could still make out with lavish compensation packages while innocent taxpayers assume billions in bad debt. Under this plan, executives will still be able to get compensation packages — the only “penalty” is that CEO’s and senior executives will be taxed on their packages, but they still will receive a reward for bad behavior.
What was originally a three-page idea, the bailout bill quickly grew to more than 450 pages. As the bill’s length increased, so did government spending. The Senate quietly inserted over a billion dollars worth of pork into the bill: $148 million for wool fabric producers, $2 million for the makers of wooden arrows for children, and a $100 million tax break to benefit NASCAR racetracks. Even Hollywood got a tax break gift worth nearly half a billion dollars.

http://dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/22/rating-agencies-draw-fire-capitol-hill/?ref=business
Members of Congress leveled sharp criticism at the major credit-rating agencies Wednesday morning, as the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held a hearing on these firms’ role in the current economic crisis.
Several lawmakers vented their frustration over what they considered to be egregious lapses at the agencies, Fitch, Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s.
Mark E. Souder, a Republican from Indiana, described their conduct as “gross incompetence.” Another lawmaker read from a series of instant messages, sent by employees of S&P, in which one analyst said they would rate a deal even if it were “structured by cows.”
In many cases, these ratings agencies assigned super-safe, triple-A ratings to structured products that later turned out to be extremely risky, and in some case, worthless.
These investment products, such as mortgage-backed securities, were created by financial institutions ostensibly to mitigate risk by pooling loans and selling parts of them off to investors. But many of the loans that were packaged in these securities were made to people with poor credit histories, little equity in their homes or overstated income.
As borrowers defaulted or fell behind on their payments, the value of the securities collapsed. That led to billions of dollars in write-downs, many of which were taken at the biggest Wall Street firms, not to mention painful losses for investors.
Henry Waxman, the California Democrat who is chairman of the committee, said Wednesday morning that the rating agencies began assessing complex securities without fully investigating the underlying risks associated with them in order to gain more business from issuers of the securities. This allowed the rating agencies to become cash machines, he said in a live Webcast of the hearing.
“ANTI” cites the most important issue yet in John S (for Senile) McCain the Third (for Shrub’s 3rd term) and his case for becoming leader of the free world by contributing —
“The McCain campaign plane is better than Obama’s, which is cramped, uncomfortable and smells terrible most of the time. Somehow the McCain folks manage to keep their charter clean, even where the press is seated.”
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/10/07/politics/fromtheroad/entry4507703.shtml
And then, employing a stunningly effective debate technique first used by Demosthenes, “ANTI” smote me with:

NEW YORK – Just two weeks after a Nobel Prize highlighted theoretical work on subatomic particles, physicists are announcing a startling discovery about a much more familiar form of matter: Scotch tape.
It turns out that if you peel the popular adhesive tape off its roll in a vacuum chamber, it emits X-rays. The researchers even made an X-ray image of one of their fingers.

I but the coarse-ground beef in the fridge instead of the counter… so it could take its time to thaw and I could contemplate the Zen of chili.
I meant to respond earlier.
I think you are One Stone Cook, lady.
I never thought about grinding up the oregano, but it makes so much sense.
I am a garlic junkie, so there’s never enough. And I, as you, can’t get enough onions into the mix.
I think cumin is important but was a bit taken aback at how much you put into the vat. I always liked what cumin does; just never thought about that much of it.
I am a wimp when working with fresh jalapenos. Or other “real” peppers. Somehow I always hear a song and wipe a tear and have to walk around like a pirate for three days ’til the stuff gets out of my eyes. (My gastro-intestinal system, fine. But my eyes?!)
I loved your comments about Cincinnati chili. Pretty much sums up one side of an absolute either/or equation I’ve heard from people. You either love it or you hold it in contempt. I suspect I’d end up on the contempt side.
But a friend of mine is writing a book about the 1975 Cincinnati Reds and has, I fear, fallen into the cult.
The beer advice was appreciated but not necessary. This ain’t my first chili feed.
I was a Lone Star guy when I was in Texas. It was back when it was “The National Beer of Texas” and the commercials had giant armadillos attacking Lone Star trucks. One of the greatest ad campaigns in history.
Corporations took over and Pearl became watered-down Olympia and Lone Star is simply Bud Light with an attitude. I always thought Shiner Bock was over-rated, but Shiner’s lager was pretty damned good.
I never minded the “fire-in, fire-out” approach to chili, but in my dotage I’ve come to appreciate the nuances of the recipe.
I particularly liked the “add some coffee” as the meat steams suggestion. It was eerie, actually.
I happened across a roll of Potter’s sage sausage last week and was on the phone with my Mom as I was cooking it. Potter’s sausage was my Grandmother’s brand. And eggs-over-easy cooked in Potter’s sausage grease is nectar of the gods. Anyway, Mom said her Mom (my Grandmother, of course) usually put some coffee in the skillet “to slow down the cooking.”
I have no idea what that means, but the sausage and eggs were pretty damned good.
But not quite like my Grandmother’s.
(I think she cheated.)
So, to answer you question, I’m currently meditating on the Zen of chili.
It’s that time of year.
I think I might light the fireplace tonight.
The cons are making (well trying to anyway) much over four words…
“…spread the wealth around.”.
Now, I happen to think that spreading the wealth around is probably a good idea in a nation where a few hundred people hold the vast majority of the wealth.
And John McCain must not really disagree. I mean, his campaign used party money to dress up Sarah and family.
Now, correct me if I’m wrong. McCain is recieving public financing isn’t he?
Is buying clothes for his running mate and her family with PUBLIC funds even legal?
Good point Blue!
Socialist McCain expects Americans to pay to dress up his pig! Spread the wealth McCain strikes again!
Anyone wondering why McCain would give up in a number of places and try to change the tide in PA? PA is pretty safely in the Obama column. Is this some kind of brilliant strategy or is the old man demented?
B.J.
“Now, I happen to think that spreading the wealth around is probably a good idea”
That’s because you are a proud Marxist.
Buts its something Obama has to run away from if he hopes to be elected. Because most people realize that while it may make people feel good it doesnt make life better for anyone.
blue jay, I did nothing to warrant your latest personal and vulgar comments. You may not like it, but I am entitled to an opinion as you are. Your disagreement with my opinion is not justification for vulgar and personal attacks.
Or does it make you feel ‘clever’ to make vulgar accusations?
Remember poor Levi at the convention?
You know? Palin’s shot gun son in law to be?
Anybody think that suit he was in came out of his closet?
OR off the rack?
Oh and THIS part I really love. The best defense they have for this so far?
The clothes will be donated to charity?
Anybody believe that one? And do they even HAVE Goodwill for the slightly less fabulously rich?
Bush/McCain spread the wealth around from the middle class to the elite rich.
Cindy mcCain paid a lowly 10% of her millions in taxes. What did you pay Heckler?
Hey it was YOU went “there” Raptor.
“.didn’t Biden say that Obama was clean and articulate at one time?”
I just pointed it out.
Heckler you are more a feudalist than I am a Marxist.
BlueJay,
The RNC bought the $150,000 of clothes, etc, and it’s probably legal. Except for the issue of whether it was “coordinated” with the McCain/Palin campaign, which isn’t allowed.

Now we have reached the abyss.
Senator Obama is returning to Hawaii to visit his ailing grandmother.
Con radio rant Michael Savage and his callers call this a lie.
THEY say he is going back to her house to retrieve documents that would prove he is not an American!
WHoosh and gone are the final shreds of reason from the right.
36% on > $250k = McCain’s ‘Country First!’
39% on > $250k = Obama’s (and Bill Clinton’s) SOCIALISM!(sic)
Some hockey mom huh?
cnn.com :
2/9/2007 “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Biden said”
And you use a fact to accuse me of ’showing my butt’? Can’t handle a fact, can you?
BJ
“Heckler you are more a feudalist than I am a Marxist.”
You’re going to have to give me your definition of Feudalist because my beliefs in no way mirror the definitions I’ve seen for the word.
I should go find a link.
I understand Bristol (Palin) spent 5 days in a swank New York hotel.
You know, because mom Sarah had to go to a conference that lasted a few hours?
Do ya suppose Levi and she shared a room?
HA Monkeyhawk! Glad to help on the chili.
I like eggs cooked over easy in any kind of meat grease. Ummm…. runny eggs…. dipped in white bread toast dripping with butter… ummmmmm….
You can cut back on the cumin with no adverse effects. I just like it.
Not your first chili feed. HEHEHEHEH.
I’m thinking gumbo for tommorrow. With roux dark as midnight!
If I had a fireplace, I’d light it. Blizzard warnings out here for tonight. WTF? Already?
As it is, I’ll flick my Bic at intervals and pretend it’s a fireplace. Or a rock concert.
That wasn’t very hard…
“. On another, Bristol Palin was put up in a luxury hotel in New York with her mother for four nights while Governor Palin attended a conference. In some cases, Palin amended her expense reports after the fact to indicate that the children were traveling on official business.”
Remember how this last summer, all the ice in the arctic was predicted to melt and the polar bears and seals were all gonna die? Remember the AGW hysteria?
The ice cover is almost back to normal.
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2008/10/22/sea-ice-approaching-the-edge-of-normal-standard-deviation/#more-3787
An AP poll taken after the 3rd debate shows Obama @44% and McCain @43%. “Joe the Plumber” struck a chord apparently, growing support from whites and people making less than $50,00.00 a year. Making up the surge are rural voters, while he doubled his advantage amongst whites who did not finish college.
outlander,
It’s not just the “area” of the sea ice. Newly formed first-year ice is easier to melt.
‘Arctic Sea Ice Down to Second-Lowest Extent; Likely Record-Low Volume
Despite cooler temperatures and ice-favoring conditions, long-term decline continues’
http://nsidc.org/news/press/20081002_seaice_pressrelease.html
” In fact, preliminary data indicates that 2008 probably represents the lowest volume of Arctic sea ice on record, partly because less multiyear ice is surviving now, and the remaining ice is so thin.” (See Figure 4.)
…
NSIDC Research Scientist Julienne Stroeve said, “I find it incredible that we came so close to beating the 2007 record—without the especially warm and clear conditions we saw last summer. I hate to think what 2008 might have looked like if weather patterns had set up in a more extreme way. ”
The melt season of 2008 reinforces the decline of Arctic sea ice documented over the past thirty years (Figure 6 and Figure 7). NSIDC Lead Scientist Ted Scambos said, “The trend of decline in the Arctic continues, despite this year’s slightly greater extent of sea ice. The Arctic is more vulnerable than ever.” “
“Do ya suppose Levi and she shared a room?”
Maybe that’s when the baby was conceived on the socialist Palin’s Alaska free love fund.
Why won’t Palin release her medical records? It would prove Trig’s a love child from her affair with Toady Todd’s partner.
God punished Palin with a Down baby for her illicit and sinful affair.
With less than two weeks to go ’til Election Day, Barack Obama has held or increased his leads in four key states won by President George W. Bush in 2004 — Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia — while losing ground in West Virginia, according to the latest series of TIME/CNN battleground state polls conducted by Opinion Research Corp. The polls also suggest that the McCain campaign’s recent attempts to link the Democratic nominee to former domestic terrorist William Ayers and the liberal organizing group ACORN (which the GOP accuses of perpetrating voter fraud) are not resonating with most voters.
My bad…I meant to say God rewarded Palin with a Down baby for her illicit and sinful affair.
Funny you should mention the Bic lighter thing –
I was at a concert a few years ago. Steven Stills solo. But he had a great band behind him that did enough of the CS&N stuff to get by. And the solo stuff kicked ass.
Anyway, I was sitting in this room of about 3,000 people — think the Cotillion Ballroom west of Wichita — and Stills did “Ohio” and segued into “Find the Cost of Freedom.”
About a third of the way through I thought I’d start a movement. I pulled out my Bic and lit it. One small flame in the middle of a circular venue.
No other lighters. Nothing else. At the end of the song I kept my Bic flicked ’til it got too hot for my fingers.
Fast forward a bunch of years and I come across Mike Finnegan, famed session and backup keyboardist and one half of Finnegan & Woods if you’re old enough.
Turns out he’s a semi-regular blogger on The Daily Kos.
I mentioned that night with Stills in an e-mail and he responded. I’d talked about the organ riff in the middle of “Love the One You’re With” that night; that Stills walked off the stage and instead of an 8-bar break it turned into a 64-bar organ special that almost makes me cream my jeans just to remember it.
The guy at the Hammond was, of course, Finnegan. And he responded that he remembered that night! That he was sick with the flu and Steven had been drinkin’ a bit and when Stills walked back stage everyone was left with keeping the song going ’til Steve came back on stage.
You really had to be there.
Then he said, “The thing I really remember about that gig was the “Cost of Freedom” moment. There was one flame in the middle of the room and nothing else.”
I wrote him back, “You wouldn’t believe it if I told you that was my Bic lighter, would you”
He replied, “No.”
So I’ve never tried to pursue it.
I still get a CC: when he vents.
He’s an incredible talent. If you’ve heard keyboards played any time during the last 40 years and have been impressed, you can almost bet it’s Mike Finnegan. He shows up on all sorts of credits of best-selling albums.
And don’t get me started about Nathan East.
Ah, the stories they

Monkeyhawk, I know this will sound like a “legend in my own mind” moment, but…
Did you happen to save the Fried Chicken Manifesto I wrote a while back? If you did, would you send it to me?
And grm, if you saved the sausage cassarole manifesto, would you post it here?
It occurs to me I should be saving this stuff. I made need some weekly column filler someday….

A pitiful bid for attention? A sad attempt a relevancy? A peek into her half-a-bubble-off-plumb view of the world?
WTF?
Condi, honey. Obama is NOT gonna make you secretary of education. Please, save your dignity…
Oh. And, “ksfarmgrrl” –
I’m with you with the runny eggs cooked in meat grease.
I’ve always wanted to order that in a restaurant when the bimbo asks “How do you want your eggs?”
They’d never understand.
And serve ‘em on toasted rye bread.
HA!
Like that’s gonna happen in Kansas.
My fresh egg guy died a couple of years ago. He used to come around every week and the difference between chickens who run around outside and eat the odd bug or seed or whatever in addition to their chicken feed is phenomenal.
Not only does the egg tend to stick together because it’s fresh, but the yolk is YELLOW!, Damn ya! YELLOW!!! and won’t break unless you attack it.
If life begins at conception, a lot of pre-born chickens ended up in an omelet simply because some people know the difference between a fertilized egg which might become a chicken… or a soufflé.
Hey Box?
That offer to meet in person stands.
Now surely you’d rather do that and we can tell each other face to face what we think of each other.
Instead of the from the blue shots on kfg?

Hey kfg? Is this what you’re looking for?
Google math is my friend.

I think “BlueJay” found the fried chicken missive here.
http://blogs.kansas.com/weblog/2008/02/open-thread-228/
It’s a fun thread and I was thinking the chicken stuff came later in this year.
Time passes fast when you’re having a good time, I guess.
And if this stuff is gonna turn into column fodder, you don’t want to get me started on home-fried potatoes.
There’s not enough newsprint in (where ever the hell in western Kansas you’ve found yourself in) to contain my lifelong study of fried potatoes.

A Vote for McCain = a vote for Osama bin Laden
Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton said Wednesday he believes that Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden might try to influence next month’s U.S. presidential election through a terrorist attack or some less dramatic tactic.
Bratton and Eddy speculated that Bin Laden is looking to sway the election in favor of Republican Party candidate John McCain, since McCain “is more likely to engender Muslim anger and resentment than would his opponent.”
“Put simply: Bin Laden probably realizes it could become markedly more difficult to paint the United States as the ‘Great Satan’ with a new president who is admired internationally,” they wrote. “The remaining 14 days before the elections should be seen as a time of high threat, and state and local police should be on high alert.”

Yeah it is.
A man goes to visit his sick grandmother and it gets turned into the stuff of conspiracy.
Silly too. What? He waited ALL THIS TIME and now he has some “truth” he has to run and hide?
What SOME of the cons are apparently too willfully stupid to know? This attempt to turn Senator Obama into some sort of shadowy boogeyman, it doesn’t work with any constituency outside the base.
Those who WANT to believe?
Screaming whisper campaigns with all blow and no show do NOT draw voters to McCain OR against Senator Obama.
They also diminish and damage how it is that we pick our leaders.
Hey I am no great fan of Obama myself.
But visiting his sick grandmother as the basis of conspiracy?
(Affecting that policeman that caught Larry Craig in the airport restroom)
“Embarrassing. Embarrassing.”

Good grief outlander! The colors show sea ice “CONCENTRATIONS”, aka sea ice extent, NOT thickness.
Look at this graph, at the page I gave you earlier. Note the loss of multi-year ice.
‘Arctic sea ice age, September 2007 and 2008‘
http://nsidc.org/news/images/20081002_Figure4.jpg
From the same source your wattsupwiththat used,
http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/
“The 40Mb animation at the left shows the recent dramatic loss of multiyear sea ice. Multiyear sea ice is older and generally thicker ice – sea ice that has survived at least one melt season (shown in brighter white).”
———–
Also, your wattsupwiththat is comparing different sea-ice extent MINIMUMS in September, to different sea-ice extents on October 19 — that’s practically meaningless.
ARROGANT ASS:
Obama Camp Charging Media for Election-Night Access
Barack Obama’s campaign is asking news organizations to pay anywhere from a few hundred to nearly $1,900 for election-night seats and Internet service.
Obama’s campaign, awash in money after raising a record-shattering $150 million last month, is asking news organizations to pay anywhere from $410 to $1,870 depending on where they want to be and if they want telephone or Internet service in Grant Park.
While it is customary for news organizations to pay their way when covering a presidential campaign, including transportation, hotels and Internet services, some have questioned the Obama campaign’s plan.
“It smells a lot like paying for access,” said Al Tompkins, a former TV news director who teaches broadcast and online journalism at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Watch out Box, I bet BJ will charge you a fee just to meet him. (And he’ll charge extra for photos and Internet access.)
This starts, Boxlock, because I stand up for my friends.
I am telling them here and now, unless you invite otherwise, to stay away.
I’ll even tell you who will be at my other meetup and you can attend provided they agree.
You stand up for your friends, but not your own son?
Paying for your own kid isn’t a priority.
Real stand-up guy, though.
Boxlock,
Nothing to worry about. If BlueJay was going to do anything to you it would be when you least expect it while you were not paying attention.
He would get you in the back.
He doesn’t have the balls to do anything to your face.
So meeting him shouldn’t be a problem.

And it’s bad, bad Blue Jay

Showing that only gives you further air. And I am obliged to tell you here that by your own posts, there are folks afraid to meet you.
I’m not.

I’m agreeable.
Of course there are people afraid to meet me.

Goodnight.
BlueJay,
I joked about my bringing a gun to a meetup and Julie joked about it too.
Why is it that no one is afraid to meet Julie?
The funny thing is that I have brought a gun to every meet up.
Even XXX has brought not only one gun, but several.
We even looked at them at one of the meetups.
The simple fact is that the only reason anyone would honestly be afraid to meet me is because they are an idiot.

Nott to mention your voracious attacks on any who disagree with your vitriolic ANGER, HATRED, RACISM, and COWARDICE!!
nite all!!
I remember Chas poking fun at a grieving family – posting an obituary even.
Posted last March, by a well known WE blog person, who is “in the book”.

Note also the 12:28 SLAM from Chas, immediately following the daily blessing from the Phony Preacher.
From the manner in which MAX keeps on his stupid insistence at re-writing FACTS… We can conclude that MAX must in fact, be a FACIST…. not to mention Anti-American, and Anti-Family, AND, Anti-GOD!!!
Nobody but an Anti-GOD facist type would continually attack a 30 year Veteran of Christian Ministry on a DAILY basis…
It’s all in YOUR posts, MAX…. Or do you care to deny that too???
FLAME ON, NITWIT!!!
BTW, Maxie…. Unless YOU know something I dont know…. Regular(aka James McCluer) doesnt HAVE any children….

We shall all await your response…. Just direct answers to direct questions…. GOT IT??
Such a profound NITWIT….
Nathaniel and Max,
Notice how BJ still won’t respond with a meet next week. He’s a shell of a person and I know that all along.
He says he is on me because of my contempt for the farmer, but if they are ‘friends’ I suspect he claims so because he has no others. Besides the only reason I’m on the farmer verbally, like the stink that surrounds her anyway, is because she is so rude to anyone she disagrees with and I am throwing it right back. BJ, you’ll hear a civil tongue in my head when she stops, and you stop, your rude, disrespectful manners.
And yes Max, I think Chas has some serious mental issues to the point of thinking he is diagnosably mentally ill.
Also note he ignores being caught in making an ass out of himself about the William P. Lear, Jr. attach on me above.
I guess he just conveniently overlooks his own mistakes. What a farce.
“Notice how BJ still won’t respond with a meet next week.”

Hello All.

Thought I should contribute also. This Pakistani forum is quite active and has a
good member base from all around the world. Also has good information on topics related to Pakistan.

would love to be a part of it. Just love the ambience here. Outstanding job by the admin and mods and everyone here.
Just to start off, I’d like to ask first if you’re into those dressup games. Because if you do, then imma have to ask you which one is better—Barbie or Bratz games?
Barbie games inspired a lot of other games. Bratz may deny it but the concept of many if not all Bratz games originated from Barbie. Take for example the many dress up games that Bratz fans are so addicted to right now. The ideas of these games all came from Barbie. Who invented changeable clothes, customizable accessories and colourful nail polishes and hair? Barbie did. Who incorporated real like perks like cars, hotels and hot cribs? Barbie did.
On the other hand, Bratz are so popular. There is no question about that. They are loved by kids and adults alike. This is the reason Bratz games are so popular. Whenever there is a new Bratz game, expect the millions of Bratz fans to play it. There is even a war going on between Bratz and Barbie fans. Who’s better? Who’ sexier? Who’s classier?
