Once again, more scientific evidence for the irrefutable fact of evolution. Creationists claim they have scientific evidence but as fundies do, they lie.

Gene Expression In Alligators Suggests Birds Have ‘Thumbs’

ScienceDaily (Oct. 6, 2008) — The latest breakthrough in a 120 year-old debate on the evolution of the bird wing was published in the open-access journal PLoS ONE, October 3, by Alexander Vargas and colleagues at Yale University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Bird wings only have three fingers, having evolved from remote ancestors that, like humans and most reptiles, had five fingers. Biologists have typically used embryology to identify the evolutionary origin (homology) of structures; the three fingers of the bird wing develop from cartilage condensations that are found in the same positions in the embryo as fingers two, three and four of humans (the index, middle and ring fingers). However, the morphology of the fingers of early birds such as Archaeopteryx corresponds to that of fingers one, two and three in other reptiles (thumb, index and middle finger). The fossil record clearly shows that fingers four and five (ring and pinky finger) were lost and reduced in the dinosaur ancestors of birds.

Two days from now, the Full Moon, the October “Full Hunter’s Moon,” will be here. Of course, today, Sunday, October 12th, although still “waxing,” the moon will essentially look full.

We are privileged in that our Moon is among the seven or eight “large” moons in our solar system. Without checking, I believe Jupiter’s Ganneymede or Callista moons are a little larger.

Our Moon has a diameter of about 2,000 miles or about 1/4 the diameter of the Earth.

The Moon is not a tourist destination because it has no atmosphere, water, wind, weather or beer. It does have a footprint left by an astronaut back in the 1960’s.

So enjoy the Full Moon the next several evenings as it rises about the same time the Sun sets which is what makes it full each month.

Barring a dramatic change in the political landscape over the next three weeks, Democrats appear headed toward a decisive victory on Election Day that would give them broad power over the federal government.

The victory would send Barack Obama to the White House and give him larger Democratic majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate — and perhaps a filibuster-proof margin there.

The skooshy undecideds in the battleground states (the only voters who matter) who have been hearing the Obamian sheep bleating chaaannnge, just lost a lot of money in the stock market over the past couple of weeks. They won’t be blaming Obama.

The miracle is that McCain is hanging close in some polls.

European Leaders Meet to Form Financial Crisis Response

“PARIS — European leaders meet Sunday in search of a common response to a spreading financial crisis that has ricocheted across the Atlantic to their shores and to try to preserve the bloc’s unity.

It could be a complex exercise for the 15 heads of state or government of the euro-zone, where the euro currency is used, because of the varied financial landscapes in each country.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, stressing the need for a synchronized response, said Saturday that a “common tool box” could be the outcome. Individual countries can use these “tools” to respond to their particular situation, she said.”

G.M. Said to Seek Merger With Ford Before Chrysler

    By BILL VLASIC
    Published: October 11, 2008

DETROIT — Before General Motors began exploring a possible merger with Chrysler — talks that first came to light on Friday — G. M. proposed a similar deal with its other cross-town rival, the Ford Motor Company, two people with knowledge of the talks said Saturday.

    G. M. executives approached Ford about a possible merger in July, but Ford rejected the idea and ended the discussions last month, these people said.

After Ford decided to remain independent amid an increasingly difficult auto market, G. M. turned its attention to Chrysler. For the last month, it has been in preliminary merger talks with Chrysler’s owner, the private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management.

People with knowledge of the talks described the chances of a deal as “50-50.”

Great profiles of both candidates in today’s paper. Funny how McCain supporters want to focus on Obama’s supposed connection to a 60s radical, while ignoring the fact that McCain cheated on his disabled wife, whored around with strippers, graduated at the bottom of his class, and was a basic jerk for most of his life.
It’s clear when looking at the background of both men who is CLEARLY more qualified to lead the country.
And what I don’t get is why don’t Christians support the man who obviously has better values?
If Obama lead the sinful life McCain embraced, they’d be yelling from the rooftops about it.

Do I vote for someone who cheated on his disabled wife who faithfully waited for him while he was a POW…or someone who takes his wedding vows seriously?
Do I vote for someone who has temper tantrums and is known for being a jerk with no diplomacy skills…or someone who knows how to bring people together in a common purpose and get things done?

Even if all one does is focus on the character of each candidtate and not the issues…the choice seems pretty clear.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Bush administration plan to let U.S. agencies decide for themselves whether their actions put wildlife at risk is drawing fire from environmental groups, which say this is like letting a fox guard a henhouse.

The Interior Department, one of two federal agencies pushing for this policy change, rejects the environmentalists’ critique, saying the new rule would cut bureaucratic red tape and free government scientists for more important work.

But a coalition of conservation groups sees the move as an attempt to gut the Endangered Species Act.

“This is exactly the fox guarding the henhouse,” Michael Daulton of the National Audubon Society said. “It’s a scary proposition to think about agencies with no wildlife expertise at all making decisions about the fate of species, potentially leading to extinction.”

The impression that McCain and the media has attempted to portray of McCain’s 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam is about as far from the truth that one could possible go. McCain, from the first moments of his capture, had behaved as a COLLOBORATOR and propaganda tool for his North Vietnamese captors. McCain had engaged in no less than 30, and likely as many as 38 anti-American propaganda broadcasts for Radio Hanoi during the period of his captivity. Far from the image of a dedicated American “hero” sweating it out in a North Vietnamese prisoner’s “hotbox” for 5 1/2 years, McCain was often given “special” treatment by his captors, who were fully aware of his father’s and grandfather’s 4 star admiral positions with the Navy. No one has ever witnessed McCain’s supposed “torture” at the hands of his jailers.

Sorry you take it that way BJ. I see the positive in it. I supported Hillary all the way until Obama got the nomination. Now as Hillary said, in order to carry out as much of HER agenda as possible we have to elect Obama and a whole slew of Dems.

I am happy that Obama is already so far ahead in the polls and now Bill & Hillary are supporting him 100% and campaigning for him these last few weeks.

If you feel wronged about that talk to the writer of the article or to Bill and Hill. If you truely don’t want Obama to win, then express yourself as you like.
Hillary asked us to support Obama and I do financially and with volunteer campaign work. If you prefer to go against Hillary’s wishes and strategy, no one can stop you.

    Peace BJ.

    “Raptor” strains with –

“I like the song ‘I’d Like To Teach the World To Sing.’ If that were our anthem, then I might salute it”

–instead of our National Anthem. What is next, cum bay ya?”

Hey, if John Mellencamp’s “Little Pink Houses” were the national anthem I’d probably salute it.

The lyrics are better poetry and aren’t set to the tune of an old British drinking song that no one can sing.

And I think the American Flag is fine flag. I know the symbolism and it stands out in a crowd and can be bunched up into impressive bunting during World Series games.

But it’s just a symbol. It isn’t America or Americans; it’s a piece of cloth.

Brush up on your 3rd Commandment before you start worshiping it as something more important than what actually happens to and by this nation.

I never liked the “I pledge allegiance to the flag” part of the flag salute. I willingly and eagerly and passionately pledge allegiance “…to the republic for which it stands.”

    But the piece of cloth?

If that’s what it takes for you to feel like a patriot, fine.

I just question how you establish your priorities in life.

“I supported Hillary all the way until Obama got the nomination.”

    Uh huh.

What nic were you under then?

For that writer to write what he did the way he did, and for you to bring it here swings a hammer at a very fragile coalition.

“If you truely don’t want Obama to win”

Let me be very clear. I want McCain/Palin to lose. I’m here everyday doing my best to help that happen.

Don’t try to play off what was your very clear mistake and (unintentional?) insult/provocation on me as my fault. Be grateful and appreciative for Senator Clinton and her supporters. They are the only reason Obama is in the race let alone in the lead. I won’t go into what could have been other than to opine that if Senator Clinton had been the nominee, this race would already be won.

I know lots of soldiers, past and present. I don’t attack them. John McCain USES his military “service” as some platform for filling the stupid people’s head’s full of sh i t and to make you think he actually earned his accomodations. His father tried to kill all that were aboard the USS Liberty.

The men I know don’t display their service in order to gain accolades. They served as real men and are getting sh i t on by a bunch of people that USED them for political gain.

    F. uc k John McCain.

You need to read about Smedley Butler.

“McCain immediately turned to the woman and said between clenched teeth: ‘DON’T TOUCH ME.’ The woman started to explain…McCain interrupted her: ‘DON’T TOUCH ME,’ he repeated viciously. The woman again tried to explain. ‘DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU’RE TALKING TO?’ McCain continued, his voice rising and his hands now raised in the ‘bring it on’ position. He was red-faced. By this time all the action at the table had stopped. I was completely shocked. McCain had totally lost it, and in the space of about ten seconds. ‘Sir, you must be courteous to the other players at the table,’ the pit boss said to McCain. “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? ASK ANYBODY AROUND HERE WHO I AM.”

A LOL, and a good summary of the Sarah and Todd Palin governor administration.

‘What the Troopergate Report Really Says’
    http://www.time.com/time/printout/0,8816,1849399,00.html
“The report also raises the suggestion that the final incident that led to Monegan’s firing was perhaps the most (unintentionally) hilarious part of the whole saga. In the run-up to Alaska’s 2008 Police Memorial Day event, Monegan visited Palin in Anchorage and brought along an official portrait of a state trooper in uniform, saluting in front of the police memorial in Anchorage, for Palin to sign and present at the event. The trooper? Mike Wooten.

Palin signed the photo and didn’t say anything, according to Monegan’s testimony, but later cancelled her attendance at the event, sending Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell in her place. The head of her Anchorage office followed up with a call to Monegan berating him for his insensitivity. (Monegan swears he didn’t know it was Wooten in the picture, and that he didn’t even know what Wooten looked like.)

But even though she won’t likely face any legal repercussions, the amateurism and cronyism of her brief administration hardly leaves Palin sitting pretty. Troopergate’s final verdict may be even more damaging than a rebuke: her administration was, at least this regard, just as self-motivated as the Washington fat cats and lobbyists she hopes to unseat.”

As I have said and said and said, many in the Republican party are people who carry deep grudges and resentments, and those feelings have been worked upon for twenty years by propagandists.

Anyway, how can anyone listen to that gaggy crap Palin spews. Yet the whole crowd greets every syrupy insinuation with knowing jeers. They know what Palin is talking about. It’s explained to them every day out in the alternate universe by Rush and the others. But only they know. The alternate universe is withering. There are fewer of them this time around and they are not united. And that’s why they are losing.

    From electoral.com…

“William F. Buckley’s Son Endorses Obama

William F. Buckley was the unchallenged intellectual leader of the conservative movement for half a century. He paved the way for Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. He was brilliant, witty, and charming. He founded the National Review and made it the mouthpiece of the right. He wrote over 50 books defining what conservatism means. He hosted over 1000 television programs. He was also immensely proud of his only child, Christopher. Buckley Sr. died in February. Maybe it is just as well because he would not have enjoyed seeing his son, who never voted for a Democrat in his entire life, endorse. Barack Obama, as he just did. The younger Buckley has known McCain personally for over 25 years and until this campaign, admired him greatly as being authentic. However, the campaign changed McCain. He is no longer authentic. He basically sold his soul to become President. Intellectuals like the Buckleys think that if you are going to sell your soul, you better get something a lot better than the presidency for it.”

Electoral also shows Democrats positioned to have 59 seats in the Senate!

Joe Lieberman will have ample chance to redeem his sorry self by joining the Dems in veto proof decisions. I’d rather not have to rely on Joe though.

    Go Slattery!

“Only a few percent of small businesses make more than $250,000 a year. So the vast majority of small businesses would get a tax cut under my plan.”

Interesting. Let’s see who exactly is affected in Barry’s plan, shall we?

The Small Business Administration defines a small business on their average annual receipts or the number of its employees. A few examples from the Table of Small Business Size Standards showing the maximum average annual receipts by industry that a business can have and still be classified as a small business:

Crop production of all types — $750,000
    Animal production except for cattle & chicken/eggs — $750,000
    Cattle feedlots — $2.5M
    Chicken/egg production — $12.5M
    Forestry & logging — $7M
    Fishing — $4M
Irrigation, sewage, water supplies — $7M
    Housing construction — $33.5M
Heavy and civil engineering construction — $33.5M
    Dredging and cleanup — $20M
Concrete, framing, and other housing contractors — $14M
    Car dealers — $23-29M
    RV, motorcycle, & boat dealers — $7M
Furniture, hardware, clothing & sporting good stores — $7M
    Electronic stores — $9M
Supermarkets, gas stations & department stores — $27M
    Pharmacies — $7M

If you click on the link, there are several more examples. It is laughable that Obama says “only a few percent” would be affected by his tax plan. Just from the sample above, these small businesses employ so many people. Other industries in the table, such as manufacturers of food, apparel, plumbing, machinery, computers, even transportation are considered small businesses because of their total number of employees. How many of those people would be affected by Obama’s plan?

83% of small businesses employ 50 people or less. So what Obama wants to do is put on his wife beater tank top, and put a colossal beat down on the people who make this country go. He wants to crush the very livelihoods that are essential to our country’s economy.

Many are faithful voters, with at least 4,900 turning out in past elections.
Another 5,600 are not likely to vote Nov. 4 — they’re still in prison.

“Of the felons who registered with a party, Democrats outnumber Republicans more than two to one.” I smell the stench of ACORN again!

Secretary of State Kurt Browning said he was not surprised by the newspaper’s findings. “I’m kind of shocked that the number is as low as it is,” he said.

Asked how many ineligible felons may be on Florida’s rolls, Browning said, “We don’t know.”

The Division of Elections has a backlog of more than 108,000 possible felons who have registered to vote since January 2006 that it hasn’t had the time or staff to verify.

    Heckler,

Your kind of discourse solves nothing. Yes, I want an adult to lead. America deserves respect as a member of the world community and will be restored to her greatness. Americans deserve inspirational leadership and we’re capable of meeting our many challenges when we’re working together under competent leadership.

It isn’t all I want. I want all people to act with humility, a sense of tolerance and the ability to treat others with dignity. I know no one who isn’t deserving of dignity. What I see for America’s future is a majority ready to move forward and away from our divisiveness, toward our greatness.

I’ve had the great pleasure of meeting most of the people from here on WEBlog who are supporting Obama / Biden. Many of them have become friends I can depend on. We’re working together on several projects, sharing our talents and building a community of like-minded people supportive of one another and our futures. There are a group of about 25 of us who meet regularly and our meetings usually have 12 - 15 people in attendance. They represent all walks of life and many vocations — teachers, nurses, college professors, lawyers, engineers, parents, authors, grandparents, scientists, human resource professionals, artists, (sorry to all I’ve left out!). All kind, hard-working, giving, tax paying citizens. None are what your words paint them to be, none are as lacking as your visions.

America is moving forward. Everyone is welcome to come along.

The New York Times took the unusual step of quickly editing and replacing a hysterical post by hockey blogger Lynn Zinser that covered Sarah Palin’s appearance at the Philadelphia Flyers home opener where she was invited to drop a ceremonial puck. In her original post Zinser exaggerated the boos by the crowd, attacked Flyers owner Ed Snider for inviting Palin to the event and appears to have fabricated the discomfort felt by NHL players Scott Gomez and Mike Richards.

That account has since been changed. Somewhere along the line Zinser gutted the original article and replaced it with a new one that came a bit closer to reality. However the repost didn’t occur before the original article shot across the internet…………

    PHILADELPHIA –-

Sarah Palin has become known as “The Most Famous Hockey Mom in America” for her constant referral to herself on the stump as “just a hockey mom.” This evening, she met that title head on by dropping the first puck of the Philadelphia Flyers hockey season in their opener with the New York Rangers.

A carpet was laid down and Palin, dressed in a beige trench, walked on to the ice joined by her daughters Willow and Piper. The GOP Vice-Presidential nominee said at an earlier fundraiser that she would stop some of the booing from the rowdy Philadelphia fans by putting her seven year old daughter, Piper in a Flyers jersey. She said, “How dare they boo Piper!”

Her secret weapon may have worked. The crowd in this staunchly Democratic city –visited today by Barack Obama—gave Palin mixed reviews. There were audible boos over the very loud music and some in the crowd had their thumbs down, but there were also many people clapping and cheering the GOP Vice-Presidential nominee.

Once she got on the ice she met the woman who won the “Ultimate Hockey Mom” contest, Cathy O’Connell from Erdenheim, Pennsylvania and patted her on the back. Flyers captain Mike Richards skated over to shake Palin’s hand and fellow Alaskan and New York Ranger Scotty Gomez greeted his Governor who gave him a kiss on the cheek. Palin then leaned over for the face off between the two players and dropped the puck.

The Palins joined by the “Ultimate Hockey Mom” walked off the ice waving to the crowd.

The Associated Press reports that Obama has spoken to Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga to “express grave concerns over the election’s outcome,” according to Odinga’s spokesperson, who added that the Democratic hopeful also plans to call Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki.

Obama, who has discussed the situation with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, has also recorded a message urging an end to the violence for broadcast on Voice of America radio.

… it also might foreshadow how Obama would handle foreign policy as president. Engaging the principals in the Kenyan crisis directly seems in line with the vision he’s spelled out in debates, one that includes face-to-face meetings with foreign leaders, including those opposed to American interests.

    The Wall Street Journal:

WASHINGTON, Sept 18, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ — Is it “Patriotic” to raise taxes on small business?
Under Barack Obama’s tax plan, the bulk of small business profits would be subject to a higher tax rate. In the worldview of the Obama campaign, the increased tax burden would make small business owners and workers much more “patriotic” under the Obama plan.
“It’s time to be patriotic” said Obama running mate Sen. Joe Biden during an interview aired today on ABC’s Good Morning America, responding to questions on how to address the economic concerns of Americans. The interview may be viewed on the ABC News website at http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/
BIDEN: “We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle class people.”
ABC NEWS, KATE SNOW: “Anybody making more than $250,000 is …”
BIDEN: “Is gonna pay more. It’s time to be patriotic, Kate. Time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to get America out of the rut.”
According to IRS data, two-thirds of small business profits are earned in households making at least $250,000 per year — those same households in the crosshairs of the Obama-Biden tax plan. By the Obama-Biden campaign’s own admission, this tax rate would approach 50 percent.
“Samuel Johnson once said ‘patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel,’” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. “I say tax increases are the last refuge of politicians who won’t govern, and Obama and Biden have put the two ideas together.”
Obama himself has admitted that his tax hike plan would affect economic behavior. During an interview aired during the Sept. 7 edition of ABC’s This Week, host George Stephanopoulos asked Obama if he would still enact tax increases if there was a recession upon taking office.
Obama replied: “I think we’ve got to take a look and see where the economy is. I mean, the economy is weak right now. The news with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae I think, along with the unemployment numbers, indicates that we’re fragile.”
(View the interview at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7fSZiZG91o )
“Obama knows his tax plan will hurt the economy,” said Norquist. “The only question he has is whether to raise taxes now or later.”

The following Wall Street Journal Opinion article offers support for the assertions:

    1) Raising tax on the so-called rich savages small business owners which leads to the destruction of jobs

    2) State government intervention in certain states has led to migration of jobs to States with more pro-business climate…Obama wants more gov intervention

    3) Increased unionization has also led to transfer of jobs to right to work States…Obama wants to significantly increase unionization

Of all the elements of Obama’s economic plan, the least discussed, but potentially the most damaging for the longest period, is his ideas to increase the strength of Unions. Pandering-induced concessions to his union backers in seemingly small ways can have huge negative impact on the prosperity of the United States.Take this idea:

Mr. Obama would expand unionism by denying workers the right to a secret ballot on the decision to form a union

Remember during the Democrat primary season in those States without secret ballots …ie the caucus States, Obama’s army of extremist so-called progressive Obamatrons were able to achieve dramatic victories. However in many cases there have been reports of voter intimidation. These are currently being chronicled by caucus attendees.

Removal of secret ballots in the workplace is a recipe for intimidation and extremism, This tactic has been successfully used for generations in Europe to guarantee the union’s membership stay in line with its leaders, who oftentimes hold far more extreme political views than the membership.

Indeed where similar ideas were adopted in Europe, Union’s grew in strength to the point where they could topple Government. Some European countries including our great allies the British experienced decades of resistance to the New Information Economy with a resulting fall in national prosperity.

Unless you want to suffer from the negative consequences of Euro-Socialism this gives you another compelling reason to say no to Obama.

Obama tax plan would hurt small businesses
With Sen. Barack Obama’s recent visit to the Granite State last month, I feel it’s important the citizens of New Hampshire understand what an Obama presidency would do to small businesses here in our state.

Small businesses are vital to our economy, encompassing nearly 97 percent of New Hampshire’s employer firms. The spirit of entrepreneurship is alive and well in New Hampshire’s small business community, but sadly Obama’s payroll tax hike, income tax hike, and health-care proposal would stifle growth and cause many small businesses to suffer.

Even the Wall Street Journal agreed that raising the personal income tax rates would stunt small business entrepreneurship, yet this is the solution the Democrats bring to the table for improving our economy.

We cannot stand by and let small businesses be taxed even more. Entrepreneurship should be encouraged, but under an Obama administration it would be taxed to death.

The Obama campaign maintains that the number of small-business owners is what’s important. Economists know what matters is the tax rate that’s applied to the bulk of small-business income. Make no mistake about it: Obama’s plan to raise taxes on households making more than $250,000 will raise taxes on most small-business profits in America.

What type of tax rate are we talking about? Currently, S corporations face a top tax rate of 35 percent, while sole proprietors and general partners face a tax rate of 37.9 percent (since they’re responsible for paying both income tax and the Medicare component of the payroll tax).

Under Obama’s plan to let the scheduled 2011 tax rate hikes occur, and his plan to raise the self-employment tax on those making more than $250,000, the S corporation rate would rise from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. The sole proprietor and partner rate would rise from 37.9 percent all the way up to a staggering 50.3 percent. Many Democrats in Congress have proposed making all small businesses (including S corporations) pay this 50-plus percent rate. A small business tax rate that high would be the highest marginal rate faced by them in nearly a quarter-century.

What would a world look like where two-thirds of all small-business income would be taxed at a 50 percent rate? The economic law that “taxing something more and getting less of it” would apply. Fewer Americans would be interested in opening or expanding small businesses. Tax evasion and legal tax avoidance would spike, as tax shelters would once again become a booming industry. Since small businesses create a majority of jobs in America, Main Street closing up shop will have a direct impact on the family budget, as well. Plants and equipment will go unused. Despite the misguided opinions of static scorers in Washington, federal tax revenues will likely decline as the economy staggers into a full-on recession.

The point is that behind the facade of only raising taxes on the “rich,” Obama’s plan will hurt small businesses by reducing the incentive to open a small business in the first place. Small businesses will essentially be working 4-6 months out of the year for the federal government, which will then turn around and use their money inefficiently and uneffectively on failed programs.

Heritage.org shows that Obama’s plan will give America one of the highest tax rates in the industrialized world

If Obama promises $800 billion in new spending and will supposedly cut taxes, how on Earth will Obama pay for all of the grandiose programs he has proposed. It is clear that taxing the rich won’t pay for all of the new spending. James Pethokoukis points out this error in thinking:

Now he (Obama) claims he’s paid “for every element of this economic agenda—by ending a war that’s costing us billions, closing tax loopholes for corporations, putting a price on carbon pollution, and ending George Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans.”
But I don’t think that adds up. Take, for instance, eliminating those Bush tax cuts on top earners. That might gain $50 billion a year, assuming no negative economic effect. But Congressional Budget Office estimates already assume that the Bush tax cuts expire at the end of 2010. So Obama gains nothing beyond, perhaps, a one-year bump in 2010 if he repeals the tax cuts a year earlier.

The net result is that you have spending vastly outgrowing tax revenue. In order to account for this rise in spending, Obama will have to tax more than just the rich. Even with Obama’s class warfare, he cannot account for his new spending plans.

While I’m sure most have seen this before it is just as relevant today as before, and probably more important for folks to realize.

‘While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, who’s hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our president.

The old rancher said, ‘Well, ya know, Obama is a ‘Post Turtle’.

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘post turtle’ was.

The old rancher said, ‘When your driving down a country road on you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘post turtle’.

The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor’s face so he continued to explain. ‘You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, and he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with.’

Psssst! If Obama lifts the wage ceiling on Social Security he is going to be a liar. Because Obama promised NOT to raise taxes on those making under 250K, remember?

Biggest Losers Under Obama’s Plan to Remove the Current $102k Wage Ceiling for Social Security Taxes
Tax Foundation: Obama’s Plan to Abolish the Social Security Wage Ceiling: A State-by-State Breakdown, by Gerald Prante:

It is commonly observed that the policy ideas of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are almost identical, but Obama does have one major tax proposal that Clinton does not specifically endorse: eliminating the wage ceiling for Social Security taxes. …

[T]here has always been a ceiling on the tax, an amount of annual wages above which the tax does not apply. Right now, the wage ceiling is quite high, $102,000 for a single person … In 2008, the maximum Social Security tax for a single person is 12.4% of the first $102,000 in wages, or $12,648.

Reporters have asked Obama how he can propose to abolish the wage ceiling and also keep his promise not to raise taxes on anyone who makes less than $200,000 or $250,000 (Obama has cited both figures). His response is that he might campaign for a “donut hole” in the Social Security tax. That is, wages up to the ceiling would be taxed as usual, followed by a non-taxable amount up to $200,000 or $250,000, and then all wages above that would be taxed.

In the table below we give a state-by-state breakdown of those three scenarios: (1) wage ceiling is eliminated, (2) wage ceiling eliminated but with a donut hole up to $200,000, and (3) wage ceiling eliminated but with a donut hole up to $250,000.

Here are the ten states that would be hardest hit by Obama’s proposal (along with the percentage of the state’s workers who would see their taxes increase under the Obama plan):

    New Jersey (10.7%)
    Maryland (9.6%)
    Connecticut (9.5%)
    Virginia (9.0%)
    Massachusetts (8.9%)
    California (8.8%)
    New York (8.0%)
    Illinois (7.02%)
    Colorado (6.96%)
    New Hampshire (6.8%)
Here are the ten states that would be least affected by Obama’s proposal (along with the percentage of the state’s workers who would see their taxes increase under the Obama plan):

    Montana (2.4%)
    North Dakota (2.6%)
    South Dakota (2.9%)
    West Virginia (3.38%)
    Nebraska (3.41%)
    Idaho (3.44%)
    Wyoming (3.45%)
    Iowa (3.5%)
    Kentucky (3.6%)
    Mississippi (3.7%)

Missing from much of the discussion about the Democratic presidential primary campaign is what Barack Obama has said on taxes. Judging from the most-recent televised debate and campaign information, he either doesn’t have a clue about the consequences of higher taxes, or he’s just a mindless soldier of class warfare.

Obama has run a campaign focused on hope and change. He claims his administration would provide economic relief for the little guy who has been ignored so long in Washington. However, Obama’s tax policies would do just the opposite.

If elected, Obama has stated he would push for a sizable tax increase to fund greater spending. He advocates for an increase in income taxes, capital-gains taxes and corporate taxes. These tax hikes would seriously harm the economy and provide only modest revenue gains.

In contrast, John McCain has indicated his support for extending the Bush income tax cuts. McCain’s plan includes reducing the corporate income tax rate to 25 percent. He wants to simplify the tax code and phase out the alternative minimum tax. These tax policies would promote growth and job creation. They would also boost wages.

The income tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 are scheduled to end in 2010. If this is allowed to happen, it would amount to the largest income tax increase in the post-World War II period. Obama is OK with this increase for individuals earning more than $200,000 a year, while McCain wants the lower tax rates to be maintained.

Obama is so blinded by a class-warfare view of the economy that he misses the fact that the income of small and medium-size businesses (proprietorships, partnerships and limited shareholder companies) are subject to taxation under the income tax, not the corporate tax. His income tax increase would hit these businesses hard.

That costs less than the two failed wars. The major difference is that Obama would be investing the money in America, not like the Republicans who invested three trillion in destroying two countries. Republicans hate America so much they’d rather spend hundreds billions in a foreign country rather than spend it here.

    …BlueJay

Why should ‘workers’, unless they have ownership and share in the risk, have a right to collectively bargain. They don’t manage the company.
They can always leave if they don’t like the terms of employment.
If an employer can’t find workers then he must ’sweeten the pot’, so to speak, to attract them.
Unions and minimum wages have been largely responsible for driving so much work overseas and south of the border.
I company whose products I sell has (had) manufacturing plants in California and South Carolina. They recently closed the plant in CA and moved all production to S.C. because of taxes, unemployment insurance and other oppressive California burdens placed on them. All those workers lost their jobs, period and the company abandoned California completely, simply to avoid becoming non-competitive due to employee costs that had to be reflected in their product.
This was no small company either, but one of the largest spinners of high pressure cylinders. They couldn’t stay price competitive with another that was utilizing illegal Mexican labor, which they would not do, so they moved.
A lot of people lost jobs, would have anyway, but the company will survive now.

“Between $15,000 and $20,000, and between $90,000 and $110,000, some families would be bumped up into a higher tax bracket,” said Carroll.

    Alaska Law:

    AS 39.52.110. Scope of Code.

    (a) The legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust. In addition, the legislature finds that, so long as it does not interfere with the full and faithful discharge of an officer’s public duties and responsibilities, this chapter does not prevent an officer from following other independent pursuits. The legislature further recognizes that

    (1) in a representative democracy, the representatives are drawn from society and, therefore, cannot and should not be without personal and financial interests in the decisions and policies of government;

    (2) people who serve as public officers retain their rights to interests of a personal or financial nature; and

    (3) standards of ethical conduct for members of the executive branch need to distinguish between those minor and inconsequential conflicts that are unavoidable in a free society, and those conflicts of interests that are substantial and material.

AS 39.52.320. Dismissal Before Formal Proceedings.
If, after investigation, it appears that there is no probable cause to believe that a violation of this chapter has occurred, the attorney general shall dismiss the complaint. The attorney general shall communicate disposition of the matter promptly to the complainant under AS 39.52.335 (c) and to the subject of the complaint.

AS 39.52.330. Corrective or Preventive Action.
After determining that the conduct of the subject of a complaint does not warrant a hearing under AS 39.52.360 , the attorney general shall recommend action to correct or prevent a violation of this chapter. The attorney general shall communicate the recommended action to the complainant and the subject of the complaint. The subject of the complaint shall comply with the attorney general’s recommendation.

AS 39.52.410. Violations; Penalties For Misconduct.

    (a) If the personnel board determines that a public employee has violated this chapter, it

    (1) shall order the employee to stop engaging in any official action related to the violation;

    (2) may order divestiture, establishment of a blind trust, restitution, or forfeiture; and

    (3) may recommend that the employee’s agency take disciplinary action, including dismissal.

    (d) If the personnel board finds a violation of this chapter by a public officer removable from office only by impeachment, it shall file a report with the president of the Senate, with its finding. The report must contain a statement of the facts alleged to constitute the violation.

    AS 39.52.440. Civil Penalties.
The personnel board may impose on a current or former public officer civil penalties not to exceed $5,000 for a violation of this chapter. A penalty imposed under this section is in addition to and not instead of any other penalty that may be imposed according to law.

specifically provided, this chapter applies to all public officers within executive-branch agencies, including members of boards or commissions. This chapter does not apply to

    (1) a former public officer of an executive-branch agency unless a provision specifically states that it so applies;

    (2) legislators covered by AS 24.60; or

    (3) the University of Alaska and an employee of the University of Alaska as to activities or employment under a contract between the employee and the university described in AS 14.40.210 (a)(4).

    (b) The provisions of this chapter supersede the common law on conflicts of interests that may apply to a public officer of an executive-branch agency and any personnel rules relating to conflicts of interests, excluding nepotism, adopted under AS 39.25. However, nothing in this chapter precludes a prosecution under an applicable criminal statute nor prevents enforcement of any other state law that imposes a stricter standard of ethical conduct on public officers.

The report does not recommend penalties against Palin, or a criminal investigation.

Palin’s lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, said he disagreed with the finding that his client violated the statute.

“In order to violate the ethics law, there has to be some personal gain, usually financial. Mr. Branchflower has failed to identify any financial gain,” he said.

Alaskan legislators voted Friday on whether to do one of four things: release the lengthy report, recommend the case be closed, have another committee continue to probe the matter, or hand it over to criminal investigators.

The panel has not yet voted on whether to endorse the report’s findings.

Following the report’s release, some lawmakers expressed skepticism over its findings.

“I think there are some problems in this report,” said Republican state Senator Gary Stevens, a member of the panel. “I would encourage people to be very cautious, to look at this with a jaundiced eye.”

I can’t imagine anything good which will be done.

Bluejay: What do you imagine good will be done?
What do you imagine will happen in your own personal life “good” by a straight one party system?

Can you be specific because many dims have made a point of our standard of living being less than our parents (because of Bush).

What specifically will improve (good) in your life when dims take the cake and eat it too?

And you were referring to our democrat majority in the US Congress weren’t you?

“the only person who creates a sale, is the consumer. the sales person merely facilitates the sale… the sale is created in the mind of the buyer…”

Again you see through the glass dimly Chas, like with everything else.

The buyer is many times unaware of the product or what that product can do.
But you are half right, the sale is created in the mind of the buyer, usually by a good salesman.

I got news for you, old coot…. YOU dont plant anything in the mind of the buyer — unless you are selling your products to mentally ill people…. people who can be persuaded by ANYthing, or ANYbody….. How sweet of you for making that confession of your sales philosophy!!

Golly gee BlueJay, I studied hard in school, paid my own way through college, got an entry level job in my profession and earned a reputation as a hard worker and became highly skilled at what I do.

I make very good money (I am thankful for that), and have raised my children to be contributing and independent self-sufficient adults.

I never looked at my employer as “the man” or the “bad guy” or the “evil corporation” out to work me to death.

I was just damn glad I got jobs and earned respect, and advancement.

    Hey Reverend holiness Chas!

Is it getting close to your annual Christmas Tidings and rant? About time to start posting daily how “busy you are” with church and getting the place ready for all those Christmas services.

About time for you to start preaching to us all on the wonders of Christmas, how holy it is, and how wonderful you feel at that time of the year.

In other words, about time for you to put on your plastic face and fac your way through the holidays.

Pretending to praise the birth of Jesus Christ, but blog everynight spitting hate, evil, name-calling, and profanity.

    RoaCH,
We need to simply face it, BlueJay and his like are not willing to work as hard as you describe, but he wants what you have earned. Sick!

Wanting to achieve is a habit with me by now, I worked full time and went to school at the same time until I was about crazy. But I’ve gotten pretty much where I wanted to go. Not real far for myself, but my kids are both Master educated, one a structural engineer with an MBA, and the other a Physician’s Assistant Instructor with a Masters. That’s what I wanted to be able to provide. They did the work, I paid tuition and books and living expenses during their undergraduate time.
We are wasting our time…they seem unable to even comprehend.

Let all prepare for the feast by gathering fall produce, and baking goods… For the Pastafarians, this means getting ready to prepare the spaghetti squash; and make ready a fine fall tomato sauce, flavored with your choice of flavorings…. meat; spices; cheeses; etc., etc.

    Happy Holidays!!

“But even though she won’t likely face any legal repercussions, the amateurism and cronyism of her brief administration hardly leaves Palin sitting pretty. Troopergate’s final verdict may be even more damaging than a rebuke: her administration was, at least this regard, just as self-motivated as the Washington fat cats and lobbyists she hopes to unseat.”

Editor in Chief, The National Review
A Conservative for Obama by Wick Allison.

My party has slipped its moorings. It’s time for a true pragmatist to lead the country.

THE MORE I LISTEN TO AND READ ABOUT “the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate,” the more I like him. Barack Obama strikes a chord with
me like no political figure since Ronald Reagan. To explain why, I need to explain why I am a conservative and what it means to me.

In 1964, at the age of 16, I organized the Dallas County Youth for Goldwater. My senior thesis at the University of Texas was on the conservative intellectual revival in America. Twenty years
later, I was invited by William F. Buckley Jr. to join the board of National Review. I later became its publisher.

Conservatism to me is less a political philosophy than a stance, a recognition of the fallibility of man and of man’s institutions. Conservatives respect the past not for its antiquity but because it represents, as G.K. Chesterton said, the democracy of the dead; it gives the benefit of the doubt to customs and laws tried and tested in the crucible of time. Conservatives are skeptical of abstract theories and utopian schemes, doubtful that government is wiser than its citizens, and always ready to test any political program against actual results.

Liberalism always seemed to me to be a system of “oughts.” We ought to do this or that because it’s the right thing to do, regardless of whether it works or not. It is a doctrine based on intentions, not results, on feeling good rather than doing good.

But today it is so-called conservatives who are cemented to political programs when they clearly don’t work. The Bush tax cuts-a solution for which there was no real problem and which he refused to end even when the nation went to war-led to huge deficit spending and a $3trillion growth in the federal debt. Facing this, John McCain pumps his conservative” credentials by proposing even bigger tax cuts. Meanwhile, a movement that once fought for limited government has presided over the greatest growth of government in our history. That is not conservatism; it is profligacy using conservatism as a mask.

Today it is conservatives, not liberals, who talk with alarming bellicosity about making the world “safe for democracy.” It is John McCain who says America’s job is to “defeat evil,” a theological expansion of the nation’s mission that would make George Washington cough out his wooden teeth.

This kind of conservatism, which is not conservative at all, has produced financial mismanagement, the waste of human lives, the loss of moral authority, and the wreckage of our economy that McCain now threatens to make worse.

Barack Obama is not my ideal candidate for president. (In fact, I made the maximum donation to John McCain during the primaries, when there was still hope he might come to his senses.) But I now see that Obama is almost the ideal candidate for this moment in American history. I disagree with him on many issues. But those don’t matter as much as what Obama offers, which is a deeply conservative view of the world. Nobody can read Obama’s books (which, it is worth noting, he wrote himself) or listen to him speak without realizing that this is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. It gives me comfort just to think that after eight years of George W. Bush we will have a president who has actually read the Federalist Papers.

Most important, Obama will be a realist. I doubt he will taunt Russia, as McCain has, at the very moment when our national interest requires it an ally. the crucial distinction in my mind is that, unlike John McCain, I am convinced he will hot impulsively take us into another war unless American national interests are directly threatened.

“Every great cause,” Eric Hoffer wrote, “begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.” As a cause, conservatism may be dead. But as a stance, as a way of making judgments in a complex and difficult world. I believe it is very much alive in the instincts and predispositions of a liberal named Barack Obama.

    ….the fake preacher Chas

Oh, and Chas just what “message of hope” do you offer? What is that hope based on? Where can your ‘flock’ derive it’s hope from. From the Biblical GOD of Abraham, Isac and Jacob, or from a god conjured up in their own mind, a god made in man’s image instead of the other way around, as you indicate every night, I quote, “whatver you conceive god to be…”.
Please explain these things for me and us all.
If you have a message of hope please share it here, I’m sure we are all interested.
