Gene Expression In Alligators Suggests Birds Have ‘Thumbs’

ScienceDaily (Oct. 3, 2008) — The latest breakthrough in a 120 year-old debate on the evolution of the bird wing was published in the open-access journal PLoS ONE, October 3, by Alexander Vargas and colleagues at Yale University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Bird wings only have three fingers, having evolved from remote ancestors that, like humans and most reptiles, had five fingers. Biologists have typically used embryology to identify the evolutionary origin (homology) of structures; the three fingers of the bird wing develop from cartilage condensations that are found in the same positions in the embryo as fingers two, three and four of humans (the index, middle and ring fingers). However, the morphology of the fingers of early birds such as Archaeopteryx corresponds to that of fingers one, two and three in other reptiles (thumb, index and middle finger). The fossil record clearly shows that fingers four and five (ring and pinky finger) were lost and reduced in the dinosaur ancestors of birds.

Good fall day to put up political yard signs … on telephone poles, vacant buildings, street rights-of-ways, back bumpers of police cars. And pass out some political flyers.

Doubt if incumbent politicians will be seen going door-to-door. They are afraid of the wrath of the voters.

I see some large political ads in the EAGLE … perhaps these will help the EAGLE’s cash flow problems.

    National debt tops ten trillion.
    by Frank James

There were no fireworks so a lot of people probably missed it. We even forgot to mention it here on The Swamp when it happened though we saw the reports. Anyway, on the last day of September, the national debt hit $10 trillion plus.

President Bush signed legislation in July that raised the debt ceiling to $10.615 trillion. Meanwhile, the financial bailout legislation passed by the Senate last night would raise the debt ceiling further to $11.315 trillion.

Here is a quick look into 3 former Fannie Mae executives who have brought down Wall Street.

Franklin Raines was a Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Fannie Mae. Raines was forced to retire from his position with Fannie Mae when auditing discovered severe irregulaties in Fannie Mae’s accounting activities. At the time of his departure The Wall Street Journal noted, ‘ Raines, who long defended the company’s accounting despite mounting evidence that it wasn’t proper, issued a statement late Tuesday conceding that ‘mistakes were made’ and saying he would assume responsibility as he had earlier promised. News reports indicat e the company was under growing pressure from regulators to shake up its managementin the wake of findings that the company’s books ran afoul of generally accepted accounting principles for four years.’ Fannie Mae had to reduce its surplus by $9 billion.

Raines left with a ‘golden parachute valued at $240 Million in benefits. The Government filed suit against Raines when the depth of the accounting scandal became clear. http://housingdoom.com/2006/12/18/fannie-charges/ . The Government noted, ‘The 101 charges reveal how the individuals improperly manipulated earnings to maximize their bonuses, while knowingly neglecting accounting systems and internal controls, misapplying over twenty accounting principles and misleading the regulator and the public. The Notice explains how they submitted six years of misleading and inaccurate accounting statements and inaccurate capital reports that enabled them to grow Fannie Mae in an unsafe and unsound manner.’ These charges were made in 2006. The Court ordered Raines to return $50 Million Dollars he received in bonuses based on the miss-stated Fannie Mae profits.

Tim Howard – Was the Chief Financial Officer of Fannie Mae. Howard ‘was a strong internal proponent of using accounting strategies that would ensure a ’stable pattern of earnings’ at Fannie. In everyday English – he was cooking the books. The Government Investigation determi ned that, ‘Chief Financial Officer, Tim Howard, failed to provide adequate oversight to key control and reporting functions within Fannie Mae,’

On June 16, 2006, Rep. Richard Baker, R-La., asked the Justice Department to investigate his allegations that two former Fannie Mae executives lied to Congress in October 2004 when they denied manipulating the mortgage-finance giant’s income statement to achieve management pay bonuses. Investigations by federal regulators and the company’s board of directors since concluded that management did manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard resigned under pressure in late 2004.

Howard’s Golden Parachute was estimated at $20 Million!

Jim Johnson – A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later forced from his position as Fannie Mae CEO. A look at the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s May 2006 report on mismanagement and corruption inside Fannie Mae, and you’ll see some interesting things about Johnson.Investigators found that Fannie Mae had hidden a substantial amount of Johnson’s 1998 compensation from the public, reporting that it was between $6 million and $7 million when it fact it was $21 million.’ Johnson is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae.

Johnson’s Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million.

    WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

FRANKLIN RAINES? Raines works for the Obama Campaign as Chief Economic Advisor

TIM HOWARD? Howard is also a Chief Economic Advisor to Obama

JIM JOHNSON? Johnson hired as a Senior Obama Finance Advisor and was selected to run Obama’s Vice P residential Search Committee

IF OBAMA PLANS ON CLEANING UP THE MESS – HIS ADVISORS HAVE THE EXPERTISE – THEY MADE THE MESS IN THE FIRST PLACE. Would you trust the men who tore Wall Street down to build the New Wall Street?

“the national debt hit $10 trillion plus.”

Yep, time to get another liberal politician in the white house to enact some more entitlement programs:

“Among other proposals during the course of the campaign, Obama has said he would strengthen the nation’s bridges and dams ($6 billion a year), help make men better fathers ($50 million a year) and aid Iraqis displaced by the war ($2 billion in one-time spending). Last week, he pledged to give religious and community groups $500 million a year to provide summer education to low-income children.

Other proposals are more costly. Obama wants to extend health insurance to more people (part of a $65-billion-a-year health plan), develop cleaner energy sources ($15 billion a year), curb home foreclosures ($10 billion in one-time spending) and add $18 billion a year to education spending. The total price tag of Obama’s plans, according to his campaign, is $130 billion a year. On top of that, Obama is proposing a middle-class tax cut of about $80 billion a year.

Obama has not identified new revenue sources or spending cuts to pay for some of what he wants to do. Another burden is the rising cost of Medicare and other entitlement programs. In this environment, new programs may prove unaffordable.”

    LA Times 8 July.

Obama Proposes over $500 Billion in New Spending and Tax Cuts
    August 29, 2008
Last night at the Democratic Convention, Senator Barack Obama proposed $547 billion in annual spending increases and tax cuts, according to a new analysis by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

The policies discussed by Senator Obama included:

Cutting taxes for 95% of all working families (renewal of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts for families making under $250,000 a year; a $500 per person “Making Work Pay” tax credit; and a number of other policies for low-income workers, savers, homeowners, and middle-class taxpayers) for $394 billion in 2013.
Cutting taxes for domestic corporations and eliminating the capital gains tax for start up businesses for $13 billion in 2013.
Investing in the development of green technology for $15 billion in 2013.
Increasing federal spending on all levels education and expanding existing college tax credits for $40 billion in 2013.
Engaging in major healthcare reform resulting in a large expansion of health insurance coverage for $65 billion in 2013.
Expanding the size of the military for $20 billion in 2013.

“The Senator’s tax cuts and new spending initiatives would cost over half a trillion dollars a year,” explained Maya MacGuineas, President of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, “it’s hard to see how we’ll ever get out of this deficit hole at this rate.”

Barack Obama said that he would pay for all of his new policies by closing tax loopholes and havens and cutting spending on ineffective and inefficient government programs. Added to savings from ending the Iraq war, these policies could reduce the budget gap by between $200 and $250 billion, according to the analysis.

“As the country faces daunting fiscal challenges from large deficits to trillion-dollar long-term imbalances, it is critical that the presidential candidates present the country with credible plans to improve the situation, rather than a long list of policies that would continue our dependency of borrowing from our children,” said MacGuineas.”

Let’s blame Bush for the deficit (and the bill the democrats in Congress just approved), but then vote for a big spender.

    Doesn’t make sense to me.

LOL I am getting tickled at the latest slant being pushed on the ignorant public. guilt by some associate in the past. What next? “McCain has met and talked with some of the worst dictators in the world… Don’t vote for him!”.
In his over twenty years in politics he was bound to have met some of the biggest criminals and idiots out there.

So let play that game some more, everyone whom reads this blog and donate to it is a Child Molester! Its true…really since whether you knew it or not sometime in your life you associated with someone that has or will molest a child in some fashion. You are also a criminal! for the same reason as someone you have said hello to or it might even be a family member has committed a crime!

Myself following the logic: I went to the top of the Holliday inn and killed people with a rifle!
I molested ten y.o. boys while working at a Q.T. in the back room in exchange for cigarettes, candy and beer!
Why back in Nov. of 1980 I was at 9th and Washington and killed one police officer and wounded another!
So you low-some form of human waste, what crimes and amoral things have you done? Heard of a guy named Hitler? That makes you a Nazi shame on you!

How do you republicans feel about McCain taxing your employer-provided health insurance?

“The McCain plan would be a dramatic change to the way Americans get health insurance. The Republican presidential nominee, who makes opposition to tax hikes a centerpiece of his campaign, has proposed to tax the health benefits that 156 million people get through the workplace as income. In exchange, McCain would give tax credits to help pay for insurance — $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families, paid directly to the insurer they choose.”

    O.J. meet Mr. Justice

LAS VEGAS — O.J. Simpson, who went from American sports idol to celebrity-in-exile after he was acquitted of murder in 1995, was found guilty Friday of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a Las Vegas hotel room.

The 61-year-old former football star could spend the rest of his life in prison. Sentencing was set for Dec. 5.

A weary and somber Simpson released a heavy sigh as the charges were read by the clerk in Clark County District Court. He was immediately taken into custody.

The Hall of Fame football star was convicted of kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other charges for gathering up five men a year ago and storming into a room at a hotel-casino, where the group seized several game balls, plaques and photos. Prosecutors said two of the men with him were armed; one of them said Simpson asked him to bring a gun.

The verdict came 13 years to the day after Simpson was cleared of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, in Los Angeles in one of the most sensational trials of the 20th century.

I live in California and visit this blog weekly. I hope you all have seen that our Governor is going to ask for a $8 billion bail-out. The state of California is going to go bankrupt simply because the state Senate and Legislature have acted in a totally irresponsibly manner and the Gov. didn’t have the guts to veto the budget. This a Calif. problem and not the problem of 49 other states. I have written my state Senator and Rep. opposing a bailout and am asking you to write the Kansas delegation in Congress and oppose it also.
    ===================================================
Having been born and raised in CA, spending more than 1/2 my years there, I am still interested in how the states doing.

Much of what I get comes from the San Diego Reader, and Don Bauder’s columns under city lights.

Simple. He has the so-called ‘unaffiliated’ shadow groups do it. Then he can pretend to be above the mud.

““In the old days, you’d jump at the chance to manage a bill,” he told me.

No more. The revolution is over, the thrill is gone and the Republican brand under President Bush has, in Davis’s view, been so tarnished that, as he likes to say, “if we were a dog food, they would take us off the shelf.”

“Mr. Obama now has a solid lead in states that account for 189 electoral votes, and he is well positioned in states representing 71 more electoral votes, for a total of 260, according to a tally by The New York Times, based on polls and interviews with officials from both campaigns and outside analysts. It takes 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

Mr. McCain has solid leads in states with 160 electoral votes and is well positioned in states with another 40 electoral votes, according to the Times tally, for a total of 200. Just six states representing 78 electoral votes — Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio and Virginia — are tossups.”

If You Think that Barrack Obama Would Make a Great President. . . . Think Again

You’re probably thinking about voting for Barrack Obama, and that he seems like he would be an awesome president. But before you cast your ballot on election day, you had better keep these points in mind. . .

You’re probably impressed that the media and Hollywood are swooning all over him. You think that, “Wow, if everybody loves him, he must be a great candidate.” It’s true that Obama has been the darling of the liberal media for quite some time now, and in the period between the time that Hillary stepped down and Sarah arrived on the scene, he had no real competition. His face was EVERYWHERE and you hardly ever heard (and still rarely ever hear) a negative word against him. John McCain was pretty much in the background until he brought out his wild card (Sarah Palin). But you need to keep in mind – a popular candidate may not be the best candidate. And I have plenty of reasons to believe that Obama, as likeable as he is, may not actually be the best person to fill the role of POTUS.

You probably like the fact that Obama really knows how to turn on the charm with his audiences. I’ll admit that he does have a nice smile and the ability to woo the masses with powerful, awe-inspiring words. This in itself is not a bad thing, because I’ll admit that I’m drawn to Sarah Palin for the same reasons. But a presidential candidate needs to be more than just a great communicator – they need to have some actual experience to be able to back up their words. I believe Sarah Palin has both the communication skills AND the experience necessary to become a great leader. McCain may not be the world’s greatest communicator, but he has plenty of experience, and between him and Sarah Palin, I believe that they are actually a more qualified team than Obama and Biden.

You’re thinking that it might be cool to have the first black president of the United States. If he is a qualified leader, this would be wonderful, because the black community could really use some positive role models. But if he turns out to be a very poor leader (and I’m afraid that he may very well be, due to his lack of actual leadership experience and high-minded ideals about taxes and relationships with world leaders) then he won’t be anything for the black community to be proud of. And if you really want to get technical – Obama is only half-black, so if he wins the election, he will actually be our first bi-racial president.

You’re thinking that Obama might be someone to keep us out of future wars. Unfortunately, this is a guy that, unlike John McCain, knows virtually NOTHING about how our military operates. Some of you may think that military experience isn’t really necessary for a presidential office, but it’s just a matter of common sense that the commander-in-chief of our armed forces knows SOMETHING about our army, navy, marines and air force. After all, the president is the person who is going to be giving marching orders, and he needs to know when it’s a good idea to send out troops and when to hold off on sending them. McCain would know all about this kind of stuff. Even Sarah Palin would have some idea, having been commander-in-chief of the Alaska National Guard and having a son in the military herself. Neither Obama or Biden would have a clue, since neither have had any dealings with the military, although to be fair, Biden does have a son serving in the national guard.

You’re probably thinking that Obama would really help our economy. But if he were to get into office, he and Biden would “help” it along by RAISING taxes, which in turns that many people will have less money to spend, which in turn means that the economy will continue to remain in the tank. If you have a good income, this probably doesn’t worry you. But if you’re like me, just an average American living from paycheck to paycheck, this should signal a huge red flag for you. And Biden says that it’s “patriotic to pay higher taxes?” This sounds more like a slogan from a communist country than from the mouth of an American citizen.

You probably think that Obama would be great to have around in a crisis. But I have to say that the idea of having Obama and Biden in charge during a national disaster makes chills run down my spine. Heaven help us if we ever have another 9/11 during their regime, because I honestly have no idea how they would react. There are certain reasons why I have this foreboding about them:
    1. The recent financial crisis should be a clue of how Obama would react during a critical time. He didn’t really seem to be making much of an effort to solve the problem – he seemed rather clueless and was kind of waiting around to see what would happen next. It was John McCain who actually tried to do something about it – he was willing to follow his motto of “Country First” and temporally suspend his campaign to help find a solution for the crisis. This is the guy I want in charge if we ever have an epic disaster in this country.
    2. Obama somehow believes that international conflicts should be solved with tact, diplomacy and peace talks, and is willing to meet with world leaders of hostile nations without pre-conditions (and never mind Joe Biden’s words to the contrary at the debate; these words actually came from Obama’s own lips). There is a time and place for negotiations, but I want a leader who will not hesitate to use aggressive force against a nation posing a threat to us if peace talks fail. And I’m not sure that Obama would do that – he would probably try to be too much of a diplomat. McCain, I know, would do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of our nation.
    3. Obama also wants to completely do away with our nuclear weapons program (this I also heard from his own lips), which would leave us completely vulnerable to any enemy nations with sadistic intents. Is that scary or what?

You think Obama would really want to follow John McCain’s motto in “Country First.” But I’m not so sure about that – patriotism is apparently not important to Barrack Obama. This is a guy who won’t wear a flag pin on his lapel or salute the flag unless he’s somehow guilted into it, because he’s afraid that he might offend somebody. Oh, please. Worrying about upsetting someone because you’re displaying your country’s flag in your own homeland? If somebody has a problem with that, then they shouldn’t be here in America in the first place. And Obama has made comments like, “Well, America’s just not the kind of place it used to be.” I’ll admit that America is not perfect and we have our problems along with everybody else, but saying statements like this to foreigners when you visit overseas? Obviously I don’t want someone to go to the other extreme of obsessive nationalism like Stalin and Hitler did, but I would like to see at least a LITTLE bit of pride in America when our president goes overseas. John McCain, I know, really loves this country and has proven it by his five years under torturous conditions in Vietnam. I believe that he would give his life to protect America if need be.

You think Obama values human life on all levels. Wrong again. Not only does he support abortion and a woman’s right to end the life of her baby if she so chooses, but he also twice voted against bills that would have protected babies who survive botched abortions. Such children, when born alive, are sadly often left to die even if they’ve survived the horror of the abortion. And Obama apparently doesn’t care to do ANYTHING to save them. This guy also made a comment about not letting his daughters “be punished with a baby” should they get pregnant out of wedlock. And this is the same man who would probably have a conniption fit if a terrorist is treated inhumanely. Talk about paradoxes.

I’m not going to tell you how to vote – the choice of who gets to live in the White House next year ultimately lies with you, the voter. But if you elect Barrack Obama into office. . .remember that you will eventually have to live with the choices that HE makes.
