All states get to vote in the presidential election, but you wouldn’t know it by the way Barack Obama and John McCain are focused on the Electoral College battleground states in these waning days. For its part, the Republican National Committee planned to spend $18 million in 18 days on ads in eight states: Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, Missouri and Colorado. Meanwhile, Kansans and voters in the majority of other states feel like so much chopped liver.

We could divide up our electoral votes like Maine and Nebraska. Obama is investing in the Nebraska’s second district (pretty much Omaha) in order to get that electoral vote. If the votes were divided up in Kansas then the Democratic votes in NE Kansas (the more educated part of Kansas) would matter since they wouldn’t be drowned out by the inbred part of Kansas (1st district).
McCain won’t be campaigning here, and since the debates are over, he won’t have any more opportunities to throw salt on the tanker wound. He can’t be bothered to come round, of course, because he’s too busy losing about six states that Bush won in 2004. McCain won’t be in Kansas and all we know for sure is that he favors Airbus lobbyists and that he flaunts blocking jobs for Wichita every other time he opens his mouth in a debate. Maybe he can work some of his anti-tanker rhetoric into his TV advertising. Determinedly Republican voters in Wichita may console themselves that in supporting McCain, they are sticking to their principles…but what are McCain’s principles again? It seems that he lost all sight of them in the course of his sleazy, distortionist, campaign.
Obama came to Kansas during the primaries and I’ve seen many commercials for Obama both locally aired and nationally. Obama is spending money in Kansas “spreading his (campaign) wealth” around.
McCain/RNC nada. Democrats/Obama care about Kansas. McCain/RNC not so much.
I don’t think the “chopped liver” anology works.
I don’t feel like chopped liver. I feel like I’m surrounded by barbarians.
After living in Florida during the last presidential election, I am glad Kansas is not the focus of attention. Constant phone calls, non stop political ads on television, neighborhood canvassers ringing doorbells, and the huge volumes of mail is overwhelming.
And of course, roads are blocked for motorcades, local news is nothing but who appeared where today, and the local newspaper is mostly political ads. No thanks.
Damn just for ONCE I’d like to live in a place that matters in the electoral process.
Phone calls? I can tell Republican callers what I think of them.
Canvassers? Heh, that is what my water hose is for.
But let’s have it be nice and humdrum for those who would not be bothered by actually mattering.
Seriously? Kansas?
If you don’t want to be left in the dustbin of history? The tendency to vote Republican HAS to go.
well, then, BJ…move to one of the ‘battleground’ states if it means that much to you. Nothing is forcing you to stay here in the state you obviously dislike so much.
Family obligations there Raptor.
But BELIEVE me, once those are fulfilled I am SO out of this state. I’ve been stuck here all my life and cannot wait to escape.
Hope you find what you are looking for…I have lived in 6 different states and one foreign country. I can’t say any one place is “better” than the other in my experience. Different, yes…but not necessarily better.
Ummmmmm…. I love chopped liver. On rye bread with a shmear of shmatlz…
Maybe when he voted to screw Wichita out of jobs, mcsame had no worries about how it would affect his campaign for preznit.
He knew he could COUNT on Kansans voting against their own best economic interests, as long as he was against gay marriage, choice, and other dearly held positions of wingnuttia.
And true to form, all he needs is an R behind his name to get the state.
And he got ya. Good.
Republican wingnut extremist Karl Peterjohn anxiously awaits the opportunity to seal Wichita’s fate by driving the aircraft industry out of town. McCain and Peterjohn make quite a pair!
All SIX of the electoral votes from Kansas will go to McCain. I will take comfort in knowing the popular vote will be closer this year and there is hope! The old coots can’t last forever and Kansas youths are better informed, more tolerant, better educated. Soon having an “R” after your name won’t be nearly enough!
Don’t worry my precious liberals, the gubermint will do what is best for you.
You shouldn’t be crying about something you asked for.
We will always be a flyover state.
But the gubermint will do what is best for all of us. The wealth will be redistributed, the guns confiscated, and the supreme court radialized left.
What more could a lib ask for?
“The wealth will be redistributed, the guns confiscated, and the supreme court radialized left.”
Heheheh. AHAHAHAHAHAH. From your lips to god’s ears…
BIG eye roll!

American_Way is now going from thread to thread to spread the good news about those who attempted fraud having been stopped — they were caught! And American_Way brings us the good news.
Linda many many more may NOT be stopped. Here is one from Missouri where they were stopped – but not until AFTER the votes were counted:
St. Louis in Tizzy Over Election
NewsMax.com Wires
ST. LOUIS (UPI) –
The city was still reeling from charges of Democratic vote fraud during last fall’s general election. A grand jury is investigating 3,800 suspect voter-registration cards, many bearing the names of prominent citizens – alive and dead.
Elections director Kevin Coan, turned up at least 161 active voters whose addresses are listed as vacant lots or boarded buildings.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch said the grand jury was investigating reports that 30 people hired to do voter registration canvassing instead went to a fast-food restaurant and copied names and information from an older voter list. Among the individuals under investigation is Nona Montgomery, the niece of former Mayor Freeman Bosley Jr.’s campaign manager.
“The St. Louis vote-fraud scandal is a national embarrassment that must be cleared up,” Sen. Christopher S. Bond, R-Mo., said in a report submitted to federal authorities.”
(The ACORN employees were later convicted)
Remember, Bush stole the election by less than
2,000 votes in Florida.
Two weeks is a long time, but I looked at several polls, several electoral maps. I don’t have any idea how accurate any of them are. Some people have told me they are accurate, others have said exactly opposite, so what’s to believe!?
But, in all those I’ve looked at if all the undecideds, all the leaning states went to McCain he couldn’t reach that magic 270 number. So he needs some states that are much more firmly in the Obama column.
It would be a task like Obama coming into Kansas and turning the state blue over the next two weeks.
Daunting, not impossible, but daunting.

Indeed great news! Now when Obama hardily wins the election the Republicans will have no complaints about ballot stuffing, etc
Since you didn’t provide any dates for your last “news” story it’s hard to tell whether it was before all the successes you’ve been telling us about in recent weeks. But, since we haven’t had an election since 2004 I guess it would have had to be earlier than that! You’ve brought a bunch of success stories here so some great things are being done to help ensure the upcoming election will be more fair than past ones. Hip, hip, hooray!
” Now when Obama hardily wins the election the Republicans will have no complaints about ballot stuffing, etc”
?
MSNBC (yeah, CONs, I know how you’ll bitch about that) just did an Electoral College map analysis.
Looks like Obama is sitting on 264 EC votes, John S (for Senile) McCain the Third (for Shrub’s 3rd term) has 162.
Obama needs to win one of the toss-up states; McCoot has to win all of ‘em.
Could happen.
But that’s not the way to bet.
The McCodger campaign admitted over the weekend they’re playing for the tie with the hope of going into overtime with Congress or the Supreme Court getting the decision. That they have conceded the popular vote and think they can pull off a Hail Mary.
I don’t think for a moment Kansas will go blue on November 4th. But I think the McC*nt’s margin of victory here will raise eyebrows.
And people wonder why I say the electoral college needs to be eliminated and only pure popular vote needs to be counted… Than our votes truly count.
Than our votes truly count.
Or not.
KFG,
Should I start to worry about the “gay agenda?”. If so please let me know what I should be worried about

================================
You don’t want the popular vote to determine the Presidency, because only the most populous states will have control.
With all this talk about the ACORN group, I am wondering what the Republicans think about the YPM (Young Political Majors) group whose voter-registration tactics are now under investigation in several states. It’s been reported their leader has been arrested in California and their group has had dealings in Florida, Arizona and Massachusetts.
This YPM group is contracted by the Republicans to do the very same thing ACORN does – voter registration.
Seems to me the Republicans don’t mind voter registration, as long as it benefits their side?
“Should I start to worry about the “gay agenda?”. If so please let me know what I should be worried about”
Hee hee heeee
Nothing to worry about, except for bigotbox.
Gotta go. His wife’s calling again….
Even though I don’t like the Electoral College as it’s evolved, I step back and think about the wisdom of the authors of the Constitution. (The “guy who comes in second is the Vice-President” idea was screwed up, but most of what they came up with — well, the 3/5ths of a human thing led to a Civil Way; sorry ’bout that)has a lot of validity.
I’m not sure the Electoral College thing is all that bad an arrangement.
The bad arrangement is what we define as a “state.”
In the 18th and 19th Centuries, it made sense to draw state borders at rivers’ edge, at whatever arrangement facilitated homesteading and railroad routes.
But today, realities of the economy, of media influence, of culture… cross state lines.
Look at Kansas City, for example. There’s not a great difference from someone living in Leawood, Kansas and another living in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
They’re in the same media market, they both (bless their hearts) root for the Chiefs. and they both work for Sprint. And their political clout is all screwed up by state lines drawn in the 19th Century.
I’ve thought a proposal along these lines –
http://www.tjc.com/38states/
– and make it effective, say, July 4th, 2076 –
would result in a structural reform America really needs.
Check it out.
Thanks KFG,
So I don’t have to worry about being dehetrosized. Thats a great weight off my mind.
“Seems to me the Republicans don’t mind voter registration, as long as it benefits their side?”
Truer words have never been spoken, mom!
But read all the god news American_Way has been bringing to our blog. Each story tells of more fraud stopped dead in its tracks, people who never made it to the voters rolls.
I do wish all fraud, all questions — doesn’t matter who might benefit — would be cleared up. It seems this is an issue that comes up every election year. Then the election passes and it isn’t any longer a topic discussed. Must not be so much a problem that it remains a problem…
Canada’s paper ballots look better all the time.
By the way, did anyone ever hear which candidate Diebold has endorsed?
Nope Freebird.
“So I don’t have to worry about being dehetrosized.”
The only folks who have to worry are the ones who made a choice about being hetero.
The ones who were BORN hetero have nothing to worry about.
Bigotbox has lots of worries though. His wife is weighing her choices….
We’ve moved along from imagining you can “catch” being gay to being told here this morning that character is contagious. You can “catch” either character, or lack thereof, depending on who you’re with. I think riding a subway, or in an airplane, being in the same meeting, sitting nearby at a concert is close enough. Problem is determining whether you’re near lack of character or the kind of character found desirable. Is there a way to tell? American_Way says s/he doesn’t hang out with (long description here of what s/he considered lack of character), so there must be a visible way of determining this.
I’ve always liked that character who plays “House.” Oh, wait, that’s yet another kind of character!
KFG,
Just to be sure, you know I’m being sarcastic don’t you?
It wouldnt hurt some wingnuts to catch a good case of the character.
I think they have some secret immunization program…
“Just to be sure, you know I’m being sarcastic don’t you?”
Yes.
Or at least I certainly HOPED so!!!!!!!???!!!????!!!!
I guess you know I’m being sarcastic too?
At least most of the time?
most assuredly. I was trying to point out how silly some fears are.
Sure, that’s what makes your posts enjoyable

Oh my, “ANTI” –
In the words of Foghorn Leghorn:
“Y’re too short, boy. Built too close to th’ ground. Ever’thin’ I say goes over y’r head!”
We live out here in Podunk Kansas where we still have Cowboys and Indians. Glad we don’t live in a big populated state. Our votes count, just not as much.
The votes are counted. But do they count?
“You don’t want the popular vote to determine the Presidency, because only the most populous states will have control.”
populous states? you get rid of the electoral college than there will no longer be “states in control”. Everyone will have an equal voice.
1 vote is 1 vote. In the 2000 election, Democrat votes did not count in this state in the presidential election. If the popular vote counted than the past 8 years might have been dramatically different. Plus if people feel like their vote actually counted, than more people voted.
Just part of that nocount Kansas.
Relax, your votes count just as much as Mikey Mouse voting in Florida.
Although, Mikey’s vote will have more meaning and get more attention. Kansas? YOu mean the place Dorothy was from?
And her little dog, whatshisname?
Already voted. Mailed my ballot today. First time. Sort of regret it. I like going to the polls. But I thought I’d give it a try. Convenient, but next time, I’ll probably vote in person.
Guess from my nic who I voted for for president.
Dennis
“Only a few states’ votes seem to count”
Hogwash! They all count, just not in the way you want. For a newspaper who calls for everybody to get out and vote (not something I call for), you are sending the wrong message.
California has the same problem. It’s locked up for Obama, so they aren’t campaigning there.
You think they are crying about it?

Speaking of Florida…
Fla. rep.’s wife seeks divorce amid sex scandal
By KELLI KENNEDY
Associated Press Writer
MIAMI — The wife of a Florida congressman embroiled in an adultery scandal filed for divorce Monday.
U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney admitted last week to having at least two affairs, including with an aide he paid off to keep her quiet about their relationship. His wife, Terry Mahoney, did not comment on seeking the divorce, and her attorney, Karen Steger, said “the petition speaks for itself.”
The petition filed in a Palm Beach Gardens court asks for a dissolution of the marriage and for dividing assets, but does not give a reason. Florida is a no-fault divorce state.
Mahoney’s campaign had no comment, calling it “a personal matter” and the congressman did not return a telephone call seeking comment. At a news conference last week, Mahoney apologized to his wife, his grown daughter and his constituents for his actions.
However, the first-term Democrat, in a tight bid for re-election, insists he broke no laws and will not resign. Voters chose him on a family values platform to replace Mark Foley, a Republican who resigned amid revelations that he sent lurid Internet messages to teenage male pages who worked on Capitol Hill.
After ABC News reported the affair last week, Mahoney called for an investigation into his own conduct by the House Ethics Committee. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also called for an inquiry.
The 52-year-old Mahoney said he had a sexual relationship with 50-year-old Patricia Allen whom he met while campaigning in 2006. Allen worked for his congressional office, then his campaign. Mahoney said she was fired for performance issues, not because of the affair.
Allen threatened to sue Mahoney for sexual harassment and they reached a settlement to avoid a public airing of the affair. Her payout of about $122,000 came from Mahoney’s personal accounts, not from campaign funds or federal dollars, the congressman says.
Mahoney is also being investigated by the FBI to determine whether he broke any laws when he hired a mistress to work on his staff. Investigators also are looking into whether Mahoney showed preferential treatment to Martin County in his Florida district when he lobbied for $3.4 million in hurricane cleanup funds awarded last year.
Mahoney acknowledges that at the time he was having an affair with a high-ranking Martin County official, but insists he did nothing extra.
The “chopped liver” feeling goes both ways. My buddy, a Republican in Chicago, doesn’t even vote because of the way the Chicago Democratic Machine has controlled the vote for decades.
